Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were annealed at high temperature under vacuum, followed by a chemical treatment using acids and ethylenediamine. The presence of acid and amine chemical groups on CNT surface was confirmed by infrared spectra. The amount of iron remaining in the CNTs after the treatments was evaluated by thermogravimetry and by energy dispersion spectroscopy. The crystalline property of CNTs was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy, showing that the acid treatment performed after the thermal treatment did not damage the nanotubes walls. Micrographs showed that the most dispersed CNTs were obtained after the amine functionalization step. The curing process of the neat resin and composites was studied by Raman and Luminescence spectroscopies and both techniques showed similar results. The presence of CNTs, functionalized or not, increased the cure degree of the epoxy resin when the same cure time was used in the comparison. Nanocomposites synthesized with annealed CNT and acid-treated CNT had cure rates considerably higher at the beginning of the reaction. The difference in the cure rate was explained by means of the sample's homogeneity and the presence of chemical groups. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. 46. Preparation and Alkali Metal Ion Exchange Properties of Protonated Rb<INF>8</INF>Nb<INF>22</INF>O<INF>59</INF> Compound

Abstract

An ion-exchanger H8Nb22O59·8H2O was prepared by extracting Rb+ from Rb8Nb22O59, and its ion-sieve properties for alkali metal ions were investigated. The Rb+ can be effectively extracted using a concentrated HNO3 solution at room temperature, leading to a protonated compound with composition of Rb0.14H7.9Nb22O59·8.2H2O. The protonated (hydronium ion form) crystal has the lattice parameters (a = 7.5104(2) and c = 43.0780(8) Å of hexagonal symmetry, R&thremacr;m), very close to the Rb+-form precursor. The exchange capacity increased in the order Cs+ ≪ Rb+ &lt; K+, Na+ &lt; Li+, which agrees with the decreasing order of ionic radius. The capacities for Li+, Na+, and K+ were close to the theoretical value of 2.55 mmol/g calculated from the composition of protonated compound. The distribution coefficients (Kd) of alkali metal ions were determined in the condition of microamount of ion loading. The selectivity sequence was Cs+, Li+ ≪ Na+ &lt; Rb+ ≪ K+ at pH around 3; the protonated samples showed markedly high selectivity for the adsorption of K+. The pH titration curves showed a mono-base acid character toward Na+, K+, and Rb+ ions. The analysis based on the ion-exchange model showed that it has a large amount of uniform acidic sites up to the neutralization degree of 0.5. The intrinsic acidities, pK0 values, were evaluated as 1.6 for Na+, K+, and Rb+ exchanges; this indicates that the ion-exchange sites have relatively strong acidity. The removal of Na+ and K+ impurities from Li+-concentrated solutions was studied, and the removal rates for Na+ and K+ were found to reach 98 and 99.9%, respectively, from a solution containing 410 mM LiCl, 20 mM LiOH, 4.3 mM NaCl, and 1.0 mM KCl.

Abstract

Two novel classes of diphenyloxazole and Nδ-Z-ornithine derivatives as highly potent and selective EP4 antagonists have been discovered. The optimized diphenyloxzole 8 and Nδ-Z-ornithine 11 effectively competed with [3H]PGE2 binding to human recombinant EP4, with Ki values of 0.30 nM and 0.91 nM, respectively, and were selective for all members of the human prostanoid receptor family. 8 was shown to exhibit good pharmacokinetic properties in rats and dogs and potent inhibitory activity toward in vitro PGE2-promoted IgE synthesis.

48. Structural Characterization of Self-Assembled MnO<INF>2</INF> Nanosheets from Birnessite Manganese Oxide Single Crystals

Abstract

We report in this paper the studies on protonation, exfoliation, and self-assembly of birnessite-type manganese oxide single crystals. The protonation was carried out by extracting K+ ions from the potassium manganese oxide single crystals in a (NH4)2S2O8 aqueous solution heated at 60 °C, exfoliation to nanosheets by the intercalation of TMA+ ions followed by water-washing, and the self-assembly of MnO2 nanosheets in a dilute NaCl solution. The structures of the samples at these stages were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis, and chemical compositional analysis. Electron density distribution in the protonated single crystal was visualized by whole-pattern fitting based on the maximum entropy method. The results indicated that the protonated single crystals can be exfoliated to MnO2 unilamellar nanosheets. The self-assembly yields layered crystals with basal spacing of 0.72 nm and with a composition of H0.18Na0.089MnO2·0.47H2O. The layered crystals had a textured polycrystalline structure, where c-axes of the nanosheets aligning along a certain direction constitute a fiber axis with azimuthal orientations of a- or b-axes about the fiber axis. Moreover, the azimuthal orientations of a- or b-axes are probably arranged at particular angles to one another, rather than randomly. The mean oxidation state of manganese exhibits no marked change at the various stages of the protonation, exfoliation, and self-assembly.

49. Preparation and Adsorptive Properties of Membrane-Type Adsorbents for Lithium Recovery from Seawater

Abstract

A membrane-type adsorbent of spinel-type manganese oxide was prepared by a solvent exchange method using poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as a binder. PVC was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution, after which spinel-type lithium manganese oxide was mixed with the DMF solution. The suspension was spread into a thin film and immersed in water to solidify the PVC. The membrane was treated with an HCl solution to extract lithium, resulting in a membrane-type adsorbent. The preparation conditions were studied by changing the initial PVC concentration versus DMF and lithium manganese oxide content. The membrane thickness, manganese oxide content, and tensile and abrasion strengths were measured for each membrane. A new type of adsorption cell was designed for obtaining a parallel seawater flow along the membrane-type adsorbents. The lithium adsorption experiment was carried out using natural seawater at a linear velocity of 1.25 cm/min. Placing the membrane between spacers was found to be effective in raising the lithium adsorption rate. The adsorption rate depended on the preparation conditions. The membrane prepared from an initial PVC concentration of 8%, and a PVC additive content of 20% is optimum for the adsorption of lithium in seawater. The adsorbed lithium could be easily eluted by treating with an HCl solution.
