Abstract

Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) is a developing region characterized for its importance for global food security, producing 23 and 11% of the global beef and milk production, respectively. The region's ruminant livestock sector however, is under scrutiny on environmental grounds due to its large contribution to enteric methane (CH4) emissions and influence on global climate change. Thus, the identification of effective CH4 mitigation strategies which do not compromise animal performance is urgently needed, especially in context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) defined in the Paris Agreement of the United Nations. Therefore, the objectives of the current study were to: 1) collate a database of individual sheep, beef and dairy cattle records from enteric CH4 emission studies conducted in the LAC region, and 2) perform a meta-analysis to identify feasible enteric CH4 mitigation strategies, which do not compromise animal performance. After outlier's removal, 2745 animal records (65% of the original data) from 103 studies were retained (from 2011 to 2021) in the LAC database. Potential mitigation strategies were classified into three main categories (i.e., animal breeding, dietary, and rumen manipulation) and up to three subcategories, totaling 34 evaluated strategies. A random effects model weighted by inverse variance was used (Comprehensive Meta-Analysis V3.3.070). Six strategies decreased at least one enteric CH4 metric and simultaneously increased milk yield (MY; dairy cattle) or average daily gain (ADG; beef cattle and sheep). The breed composition F1 Holstein × Gyr decreased CH4 emission per MY (CH4IMilk) while increasing MY by 99%. Adequate strategies of grazing management under continuous and rotational stocking decreased CH4 emission per ADG (CH4IGain) by 22 and 35%, while increasing ADG by 22 and 71%, respectively. Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of pasture and enteric methane (CH4) emission of Curraleiro Pé-duro x Nellore cattle in a pasture of Megathyrsus maximus 'Mombaça', both in full sun and in a consortium with babassu palms (Attalea spp.) in the Amazonian biome. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six steers per system, and the evaluations were done during the dry period (2015) and rainy period (2016). In comparison to forage in the full sun system, forage in the silvopastoral system showed, in the dry period, higher levels of crude protein, ether extract, total digestible nutrient, and in vitro digestible organic matter, and lower levels of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, and total carbohydrate (TCHO). In the rainy period, forage in the silvopastoral system showed higher levels of crude protein and a reduction of nonfibrous carbohydrate and TCHO. The CH4 emissions were similar in both systems within the same period, and ranged from 44.0 to 74.2 kg per year per animal. During the dry period, the emission per kilogram of dry ingested matter and the loss of gross energy as methane were lower in the silvopastoral system. During the rainy period, the emissions were similar in both systems. The silvopastoral system yields forage with good quality in the dry period, and considering both periods, it is more efficient (emission of CH4 per daily weight gain) than the system in full sun. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade da pastagem e a emissão de metano (CH4) entérico de bovinos Curraleiro Pé-duro x Nelore, em pastagem de Megathyrsus maximus 'Mombaça', tanto a pleno sol como em consórcio com palmeiras de babaçu (Attalea spp.), no bioma Amazônia. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com seis novilhos por sistema, e as avaliações foram realizadas nos períodos seco (2015) e no chuvoso (2016). Em comparação à forragem no sistema a pleno sol, a forragem no sistema silvopastoril apresentou maiores teores de proteína bruta, extrato etéreo, nutrientes digestíveis totais e digestibilidade in vitro da matéria orgânica, e menores teores de matéria seca, fibra em detergente neutro e carboidratos totais (CHOT). No período das águas, o sistema silvopastoril apresentou maiores teores de proteína bruta e reduções de carboidratos não fibrosos e CHOT. As emissões de CH4 foram semelhantes entre os sistemas, tendo variado de 44,0 a 74,2 kg por animal por ano. No período seco, a emissão por quilograma de matéria seca ingerida e a perda de energia bruta por metano foram menores no sistema silvopastoril. No período chuvoso, as emissões foram similares entre os tratamentos. O sistema silvopastoril oferece pastagem de boa qualidade na seca e, considerando-se o ciclo com ambos os períodos, é mais eficiente (emissão de CH4 pelo ganho de peso diário) do que o sistema a pleno sol.

12. Heritability estimates and genome-wide association study of methane emission traits in Nellore cattle

Abstract

The objectives of the present study were to estimate the heritability for daily methane emission (CH4) and residual daily methane emission (CH4res) in Nellore cattle, as well as to perform genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to identify genomic regions and candidate genes influencing the genetic variation of CH4and CH4res. Methane emission phenotypes of 743 Nellore animals belonging to 3 breeding programs were evaluated. CH4was measured using the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer technique (which involves an SF6 permeation tube introduced into the rumen, and an appropriate apparatus on each animal), and CH4res was obtained as the difference between observed CH4and CH4adjusted for dry matter intake. A total of 6,252 genotyped individuals were used for genomic analyses. Data were analyzed with a univariate animal model by the single-step GBLUP method using the average information restricted maximum likelihood (AIREML) algorithm. The effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were obtained using a single-step GWAS approach. Candidate genes were identified based on genomic windows associated with quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to the 2 traits. Annotation of QTLs and identification of candidate genes were based on the initial and final coordinates of each genomic window considering the bovine genome ARS-UCD1.2 assembly. Heritability estimates were of moderate to high magnitude, being 0.42 ± 0.09 for CH4and 0.21 ± 0.09 for CH4res, indicating that these traits will respond rapidly to genetic selection. GWAS revealed 11 and 15 SNPs that were significantly associated (P< 10−6) with genetic variation of CH4and CH4res, respectively. QTLs associated with feed efficiency, residual feed intake, body weight, and height overlapped with significant markers for the traits evaluated. Ten candidate genes were present in the regions of significant SNPs; 3 were associated with CH4and 7 with CH4res. The identified genes are related to different functions such as modulation of the rumen microbiota, fatty acid production, and lipid metabolism. CH4and CH4respresented sufficient genetic variation and may respond rapidly to selection. Therefore, these traits can be included in animal breeding programs aimed at reducing enteric methane emissions across generations.The study reports heritability estimates, as well as genomic regions and candidate genes, associated with enteric methane emission traits in Nellore cattle. The results are the first report for Zebu cattle based on phenotyping of the daily methane emission rate of a considerable number of animals. These findings are essential for the inclusion of methane emission traits in the selection indices of beef cattle aiming at reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the beef production chain.Genetic selection designed to reduce the amount of enteric methane emission from livestock is a mitigation strategy to ensure more sustainable production over generations since genetic gains are cumulative. Brazil is a large producer of beef, and the Nellore breed (Bos taurus indicus) plays a very important role in this production. There are a few studies evaluating genetic and genomic aspects of enteric methane emission in Nellore cattle. The objectives of the present study were to estimate the heritability of daily methane emission (CH4) and residual daily methane emission (CH4res) in Nellore cattle, as well as to identify genomic regions and candidate genes associated with genetic variation of these traits. The heritability estimates for CH4and CH4res were of moderate to high magnitude (0.42 ± 0.09 and 0.21 ± 0.09, respectively). Genome-wide association analyses revealed new loci associated with methane emission in Nellore cattle on chromosomes 5, 11, 17, and 20, where 10 candidate genes were identified, 3 for CH4and 7 for CH4res. The 2 traits possess sufficient genetic variability to be included as selection criteria in breeding programs.
