Abstract

In this paper we present a statistical study of edge fluctuations taken with the Gas Puffing Imaging (GPI) diagnostics. We carry out a comparison of GPI signal from an extensive database including four devices (two Tokamaks and two Reversed Field Pinches). The data are analyzed in terms of their statistical moments Skewness and Kurtosis, as done in [B. Labit, et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{98}, 255002 (2007)]. The data align along parabolic curves, although different from machine to machine, with some spread around the best-fitting curve. A discussion about the meaning of the parabolic trend as well as the departure of real data from it is provided. Abstract

This paper reports the main recent results of the RFX-mod fusion science activity. The RFX-mod device is characterized by a unique exibility in terms of accessible magnetic con gurations. Axisymmetric and helically shaped reversed- eld pinch equilibria have been studied, along with tokamak plasmas in a wide range of q(a) regimes (spanning from 4 down to 1.2 values). The full range of magnetic con gurations in between the two, the so-called ultra-low q ones, has been explored, with the aim of studying speci c physical issues common to all equilibria, such as, for example, the density limit phenomenon. The powerful RFX-mod feedback control system has been exploited for MHD control, which allowed us to extend the range of experimental parameters, as well as to induce speci c magnetic perturbations for the study of 3D effects. In particular, transport, edge and isotope effects in 3D equilibria have been investigated, along with runaway mitigations through induced magnetic perturbations. The rst transitions to an improved con nement scenario in circular and D-shaped tokamak plasmas have been obtained thanks to an active modi cation of the edge electric eld through a polarized electrode. The experiments are supported by intense modeling with 3D MHD, gyrokinetic, guiding center and transport codes. Proposed modi cations to the RFX-mod device, which will enable further contributions to the solution of key issues in the roadmap to ITER and DEMO, are also brie y presented.

Abstract

The RFX-mod device is operated both as a reversed field pinch (RFP), where advanced regimes featuring helical shape develop, and as a tokamak. Due to its flexibility, RFX-mod is contributing to the solution of key issues in the roadmap to ITER and DEMO, including MHD instability control, internal transport barriers, edge transport and turbulence, isotopic effect, high density limit and three-dimensional (3D) non-linear MHD modelling. This paper reports recent advancements in the understanding of the self-organized helical states, featuring a strong electron transport barrier, in the RFP configuration; the physical mechanism driving the residual transport at the barrier has been investigated. Following the first experiments with deuterium as the filling gas, new results concerning the isotope effect in the RFP are discussed. Studies on the high density limit show that in the RFP it is related to a toroidal particle accumulation due to the onset of a convective cell. In the tokamak configuration, q(a) regimes down to q(a) = 1.2 have been pioneered, with (2,1) tearing mode (TM) mitigated and (2,1) resistive wall mode (RWM) stabilized: the control of such modes can be obtained both by poloidal and radial sensors. Progress has been made in the avoidance of disruptions due to the (2,1) TM by applying q(a) control, and on the general issue of error field control. The effect of externally applied 3D fields on plasma flow and edge turbulence, sawtooth control and runaway electron decorrelation has been analysed. The experimental program is supported by substantial theoretical activity: 3D non-linear visco-resistive MHD and non-local transport modelling have been advanced; RWMs have been studied by a toroidal MHD kinetic hybrid stability code.

Abstract

We present the main features of a 3-years Research Project on Plasma Medicine that has started at the beginning of 2017. The project is being carried out as International collaboration between the Department of Surgical and Medical Sciences of University of Catanzaro (Italy - hosting institution), Consorzio RFX (Italy) and the AIST Association (Japan). The main focus of the project is the development of a non-thermal plasma source for accelerating blood coagulation. A first prototype has been developed and tested and the main technical characteristics are summarized in this contribution. The plasma source is based on a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) that can use either Helium (as shown in fig.1) or Argon as working gas. The device is controlled by a microcontroller and can be supplied by a standard 220 V/50 Hz AC voltage. An AC/DC converter is then used to feed high voltage transformer to 8-9 kV discharge. Effective current on a metallic target measurements and emission spectroscopy analysis are presented. The presence in the plasma of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RONS) is highlighted in the different operational regimes. Effective current to target is of the order of 1 mA. Preliminary tests on blood samples exposed to the helium plasma (for about 30-40 s) shows a coagulation time reduction of about 15% with respect to the untreated samples. Abstract

This paper reports the main recent results of the RFX-mod fusion science activity. The RFX-mod device is characterized by a unique flexibility in terms of accessible magnetic configurations. Axisymmetric and helically shaped reversed-field pinch equilibria have been studied, along with tokamak plasmas in a wide range of q(a) regimes (spanning from 4 down to 1.2 values). The full range of magnetic configurations in between the two, the so-called ultra-low q ones, has been explored, with the aim of studying specific physical issues common to all equilibria, such as, for example, the density limit phenomenon. The powerful RFX-mod feedback control system has been exploited for MHD control, which allowed us to extend the range of experimental parameters, as well as to induce specific magnetic perturbations for the study of 3D effects. In particular, transport, edge and isotope effects in 3D equilibria have been investigated, along with runaway mitigations through induced magnetic perturbations. The first transitions to an improved confinement scenario in circular and D-shaped tokamak plasmas have been obtained thanks to an active modification of the edge electric field through a polarized electrode. The experiments are supported by intense modeling with 3D MHD, gyrokinetic, guiding center and transport codes. Proposed modifications to the RFX-mod device, which will enable further contributions to the solution of key issues in the roadmap to ITER and DEMO, are also briefly presented., QC 20170802

Abstract

Thanks to the exploitation of its advanced active control system, during 10 years of operation RFX-mod reached its target design values, offering a cross-configuration point of view for issues such as 3D physics, dynamo and self-organisation, transport barriers, turbulence, isotopic effect, density limit, plasma-wall interaction. In order to extend the explored operational scenarios, several upgrades, not involving radical machine modifications, are proposed and are presently in the design phase. This paper describes the scientific motivations and the expected improvements: reduction of residual magnetic chaos and achievement of more robust helical states in Reversed Field Pinch configuration; extension of high density regimes with a better density control; achievement of H-mode in Tokamak configuration to study ELM, sawtooth and runaway electron mitigation by magnetic perturbations; enhancement of diagnostic capability.

Abstract

This paper reports the highlights of the RFX-mod fusion science programme since the last 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. The RFX-mod fusion science programme focused on two main goals: exploring the fusion potential of the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration and contributing to the solution of key science and technology problems in the roadmap to ITER. Active control of several plasma parameters has been a key tool in this endeavour. New upgrades on the system for active control of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability are underway and will be presented in this paper. Unique among the existing fusion devices, RFX-mod has been operated both as an RFP and as a tokamak. The latter operation has allowed the exploration of edge safety factor q(edge) < 2 with active control of MHD stability and studies concerning basic energy and flow transport mechanisms. Strong interaction has continued with the stellarator community in particular on the physics of helical states and on three-dimensional codes.

Abstract

This paper summarizes the main achievements of the RFX fusion science program in the period between the 2008 and 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conferences. RFX-mod is the largest reversed field pinch in the world, equipped with a system of 192 coils for active control of MHD stability. The discovery and understanding of helical states with electron internal transport barriers and core electron temperature >1.5 keV significantly advances the perspectives of the configuration. Optimized experiments with plasma current up to 1.8 MA have been realized, confirming positive scaling. The first evidence of edge transport barriers is presented. Progress has been made also in the control of first-wall properties and of density profiles, with initial first-wall lithization experiments. Micro-turbulence mechanisms such as ion temperature gradient and micro-tearing are discussed in the framework of understanding gradient-driven transport in low magnetic chaos helical regimes. Both tearing mode and resistive wall mode active control have been optimized and experimental data have been used to benchmark numerical codes. The RFX programme also provides important results for the fusion community and in particular for tokamaks and stellarators on feedback control of MHD stability and on three-dimensional physics. On the latter topic, the result of the application of stellarator codes to describe three-dimensional reversed field pinch physics will be presented. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

Abstract

Pellet injection has been operated in TPE-RX. The pellet is injected into the TPE-RX from a horizontal port. It has been shown that the pellet is deflected in the plasma current direction at plasma edge and goes towards plasma center. It is considered that the fast electrons ablate the pellet and the pellet trajectory is deflected as expected. Pellet injection was performed in standard and PPCD discharges at Ip=300 kA. The density increases due to the pellet injection is more than two times that of standard plasma. The significant density increase in PPCD discharges is maintained for a long period.

Abstract

This paper reports the highlights of the RFX-mod fusion science programme since the last 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. The RFX-mod fusion science programme focused on two main goals: exploring the fusion potential of the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration and contributing to the solution of key science and technology problems in the roadmap to ITER. Active control of several plasma parameters has been a key tool in this endeavour. New upgrades on the system for active control of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability are underway and will be presented in this paper. Unique among the existing fusion devices, RFX-mod has been operated both as an RFP and as a tokamak. The latter operation has allowed the exploration of edge safety factor q edge < 2 with active control of MHD stability and studies concerning basic energy and flow transport mechanisms. Abstract

This paper summarizes the main achievements of the RFX fusion science program in the period between the 2008 and 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conferences. RFX-mod is the largest reversed field pinch in the world, equipped with a system of 192 coils for active control of MHD stability. The discovery and understanding of helical states with electron internal transport barriers and core electron temperature >1.5 keV significantly advances the perspectives of the configuration. Optimized experiments with plasma current up to 1.8 MA have been realized, confirming positive scaling. The first evidence of edge transport barriers is presented. Progress has been made also in the control of first-wall properties and of density profiles, with initial first-wall lithization experiments. Micro-turbulence mechanisms such as ion temperature gradient and micro-tearing are discussed in the framework of understanding gradient-driven transport in low magnetic chaos helical regimes. Both tearing mode and resistive wall mode active control have been optimized and experimental data have been used to benchmark numerical codes. The RFX programme also provides important results for the fusion community and in particular for tokamaks and stellarators on feedback control of MHD stability and on three-dimensional physics. Abstract

Turbulence in the reversed field pinch (RFP) plasma has been investigated by using the microwave imaging reflectometry in the toroidal pinch experiment RX (TPE-RX). In conventional RFP plasma, the fluctuations are dominated by the intermittent blob-like structures. These structures are accompanied with the generation of magnetic field, the strong turbulence, and high nonlinear coupling among the high and low k modes. The pulsed poloidal current drive operation, which improves the plasma confinement significantly, suppresses the dynamo, the turbulence, and the blob-like structures.

Abstract

The confinement properties of a reversed-field pinch ( RFP) device are limited by the high level of magnetic stochasticity produced by the interaction of tearing modes in the plasma core. Away to reduce the core magnetic stochasticity is the application of the pulsed poloidal current drive ( PPCD) technique. By applying the PPCD, tearing modes are stabilized, magnetic stochasticity and turbulence are reduced and hence the confinement is enhanced. In the TPE-RX device, standard RFP plasmas are characterized by magnetic and electrostatic edge turbulence dominated by intermittent phenomena; on the contrary, the improved confinement regime generated by the PPCD is characterized by turbulence with a self-similar nature. We show that the increase in tau(p) is well correlated with the change in the nature of both the magnetic and the electrostatic turbulence. While plasmas with low confinement are dominated by intermittent events and by magnetic and electrostatic activity with a non-self-similar nature, plasmas with high confinement show turbulence with a self-similar character., QC 20120221

Abstract

The cold pulse propagation is a powerful tool for the study of heat transport and the determination of perturbative electron heat diffusivity chi(CP)(e). In this paper the experimental study of cold pulses generated by pellet injection in a reversed-field pinch device is described. The most common phenomenology is an inward cold pulse propagation, from the edge to the core; however, we will describe that outward propagation can occur if the pellet ablates up to the plasma centre. A model to simulate the dynamics of the pulse (i.e. the relation between the arrival time of the pulse and its radial position) has been developed. With this model it is possible to explain the cold pulse phenomenologies as well as to estimate chi(CP)(e) in the plasma core. The heat diffusivity in standard and enhanced confinement plasmas has been determined and compared; in standard regimes chi(CP)(e) is three times larger than in enhanced confinement regimes. The quasi-single-helicity (QSH) state of a reversed-field pinch (RFP) plasma is a regime in which the RFP configuration can be sustained by a dynamo produced mainly by a single tearing mode and in which a helical structure with well-defined magnetic flux surfaces arises. In this Letter, we show that spontaneous transitions to the QSH regime enhance the particle confinement. Abstract

The pulsed poloidal current drive technique reduces the magnetic chaos that characterizes reversed-field pinch configurations and produces a regime with an improved confinement. In this paper, we describe that, in TPE-RX [Y. Yagi , Fusion Eng. Des. 45, 409 (1999)], the termination phase of this regime is due to the increase of the slinky structure that creates a stochastic region and produces the expulsion of energy in a localized toroidal position. Before the plasma reaches the improved confinement regime, the slinky distorts the chain of m=0 islands on the reversal surface. During this regime, the magnetic activity and the phase locking decrease, the distortion in the island chain disappears, and the confinement increases. At the termination of this regime the magnetic activity markedly increases, as well as the phase locking, recreating the distortion in the m=0 magnetic island chain. As a consequence, at the position of the distortion the plasma region inside the reversal surface is characterized by a rapid energy loss, and outside the reversal surface a toroidally localized energy expulsion is induced., QC 20120221

Abstract

A database of the confinement properties of the toroidal pinch experiment (TPE) series reversed-field pinch (RFP) devices was established, and an empirical scaling law for the energy confinement time, tau(E), was deduced for a consistently selected set of the database (Yagi Y. et al 2003 Nucl. Fusion 43 1787). The scaling for tau(E) [TPE-scaling; tau(E) similar to a(1.7)I(p)(0.8) (I-p/N)(0.3)Theta(3)], in particular, is a power law similar to that predicted on the basis of the tearing modes, P as a function of the plasma minor radius (a), plasma current (I-p), and I-p/N, where N is the column density. On the other hand, the TPE-scaling has a strong dependence on the pinch parameter, Theta, namely tau(E) similar to Theta(3). Recently, we have investigated the database of the improved confinement in the pulsed poloidal current drive (PPCD). We show that the TPE-scaling agrees well with the improved tau(E) in the PPCD database, because of its strong Theta dependence. Namely, Theta(3) is a factor of merit for RFP plasmas. We discuss why this agreement is obtained in spite of the general difference between the underlying transport mechanisms of the standard and PPCD discharges. 45. Quasi-single helicity state at shallow reversal in TPE-RX reversed-field pinch experiment

Abstract

The operating conditions for obtaining a quasi-single helicity (QSH) state with a good reproducibility are found in a reversed-field pinch (RFP) experiment on the large RFP machine, TPE-RX [ Y. Yagi et al., Fusion Eng. Des. 45, 421 (1999) ]. In these conditions, the reversal of toroidal magnetic field (Bta) is maintained at a very shallow value ( ∼ −0.2 mT) after the setting up phase and the following fast current rising phase. After a certain period at this shallow reversal ( ∼ 15–25 ms), the m/n = 1/6 mode (m and n being the poloidal and toroidal Fourier mode numbers, respectively) rapidly grows and saturates before the termination of discharge. The growth of this mode dominates the other modes and the QSH state with m/n = 1/6 is finally achieved. This QSH state can be sustained for a long period (up to ∼ 45 ms) almost until the end of discharge by applying a delayed reversal of Bta with appropriate trigger timing and magnitude. The initial setup of the QSH states shows a reproducibility of almost 100%, but its sustainment for a long period shows a slightly reduced reproducibility ( ∼ 85%). The initial rapid growth of the single dominant mode is compared with the numerical results of linear stability and nonlinear three-dimensional (3D) calculations by assuming the experimental magnetic field profile estimated with a standard model. Linear calculations show that the m/n = 1/6 mode has the maximum growth rate to the ideal magnetohydrodynamic instability and can explain the dominant growth of this mode. The 3D calculations also show a qualitative agreement with the experiment, where under some conditions the m/n = 1/6 mode becomes dominant after an initial relaxation and continues to the end of the simulation. These results indicate that the present QSH state is the combined result of the linear growth and nonlinear saturation of a particular mode., QC 20120202

The close relationship between the locked mode (LM) and pulsed poloidal current drive (PPCD) regime in a reversed-field pinch device is described. If the modes lock close to the shell gap then the LM is enhanced and there is a high probability that the PPCD will not improve plasma performance. The physical reason will be discussed. If the position of the locked mode is far from the shell gap then the PPCD is effective with a high probability. Abstract

Factors affecting the magnitude of sawtooth crashes in soft x-ray (SXR) signals (I-SXR) have been studied using data from high-Theta (pinch parameter) discharges in the toroidal pinch experiment TPE-1RM20 reversed-field pinch device [Y. Yagi , J. Plasma Fusion Research 69, 700 (1993)]. In TPE-1RM20, discharges with a high Theta that are free of large sawteeth (improved high-Theta mode discharges), spontaneously appeared [Y. Hirano , Nucl. Fusion 36, 721 (1996)] among typical conventional discharges exhibiting large sawtooth crashes. The reason for the spontaneous appearance of sawtooth-free discharges has been unclear. It is shown that the normalized magnitude of the SXR crashes, [Delta(I-SXR)/I-SXR], is well correlated with the m (poloidal mode number)=0 mode amplitude in the postcrash phase. It is also shown that Delta(I-SXR)/I-SXR is smaller when the quasi-single helicity state precedes the crash rather than when the multiple-helicity state precedes the crash, and Delta(I-SXR)/I-SXR is smaller when E-parallel to (the parallel electric field at the plasma surface) is approximately zero in the precrash phase rather than E-parallel to being negative., QC 20120131
