Abstract Inactivating mutations in SMARCB1 confer an oncogenic dependency on EZH2 in atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumors (ATRTs), but the underlying mechanism has not been fully elucidated. We found that the sensitivity of ATRTs to EZH2 inhibition (EZH2i) is associated with the viral mimicry response. Unlike other epigenetic therapies targeting transcriptional repressors, EZH2i-induced viral mimicry is not triggered by cryptic transcription of endogenous retroelements, but rather mediated by increased expression of genes enriched for intronic inverted-repeat Alu (IR-Alu) elements. Interestingly, interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) are highly enriched for dsRNA-forming intronic IR-Alu elements, suggesting a feedforward loop whereby these activated ISGs may reinforce dsRNA formation and viral mimicry. EZH2i also upregulates the expression of full-length LINE-1s, leading to genomic instability and cGAS/STING signaling in a process dependent on reverse transcriptase activity. Co-depletion of dsRNA sensing and cytoplasmic DNA sensing completely rescues the viral mimicry response to EZH2i in SMARCB1-deficient tumors.

Introduction: The Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum, implemented in August 2019, emphasizes a comprehensive approach to learning, integrating cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. To address the limitations of traditional assessment methods, the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) was introduced to reduce the bias. OSCE is now widely adopted as a gold standard for evaluating clinical skills due to its structured, objective approach and ability to minimize bias. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of MBBS fourth-year students regarding the OSCE in General Surgery at Al-Ameen Medical College. Materials and Methods: Conducted over six months, this cross-sectional study involved 144 out of 149 MBBS fourth-year students who participated in an OSCE consisting of six stations: two history-taking, two clinical examination, one with a simulated patient, one with a mannequin, one skill station, and one communication station. Abstract Objective Colorectal cancer (CRC) is conventionally classified as right sided, left sided, and rectal cancer. Clinicopathological, molecular features and risk factors do not change abruptly along the colorectum, and variations exist even within the refined subsites, which may contribute to inconsistencies in the identification of clinically relevant CRC biomarkers. We generated a CRC metabolome map to describe the association between metabolites, diagnostic and survival heterogeneity in cancers of different subsites of the colorectum. Design Utilizing 372 patient-matched tumor and normal mucosa tissues, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was applied to examine metabolomic profiles along seven subsites of the colorectum: cecum (n = 63), ascending colon (n = 44), transverse colon (n = 32), descending colon (n = 28), sigmoid colon (n = 75), rectosigmoid colon (n = 38), and rectum (n = 92). Results 39 and 70 significantly altered metabolites (including bile acids, lysophosphatidylcholines and lysophosphatidylethanolamines) among tumors and normal mucosa, respectively, showed inter-subsite metabolic heterogeneity between CRC subsites. Gradual changes in metabolite abundances with significantly linear trends from cecum to rectum were observed: 23 tumor-specific metabolites, 30 normal mucosa-specific metabolites, and 15 metabolites in both tumor and normal mucosa, had concentration gradients across the colorectum, and is disease status dependent. The metabolites that showed a linear trend included bile acids, amino acids, lysophosphatidylcholines, and lysophosphatidylethanolamines. Comparison of tumors to patient-matched normal mucosa revealed metabolite changes exclusive to each subsite, thereby further highlighting differences in cancer metabolism across the 7 subsites of the colorectum. Furthermore, metabolites associated with survival were different and unique to each subsite. Finally, an interactive and publicly accessible CRC metabolome database was designed to enable access and utilization of this rich data resource ( https://colorectal-cancer-metabolome.com/yale-university ). Conclusions Gradual changes exist in metabolite abundances from the cecum to the rectum. The association between patient survival and distinct metabolites with anatomic subsite of the colorectum, reveals differences between cancers across the colorectum. These inter-subsite metabolic heterogeneities enrich the current understanding and substantiate previous studies that have challenged the conventional classification of right-sided, left-sided, and rectal cancers, by identifying specific metabolites that offer new biological insights into CRC subsite heterogeneity. The database designed in this study will enable researchers to delve into granular information on the CRC metabolome, which until now has not been available.

Introduction: The primary objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the clinical decision tool (CDT) in trauma patients, providing a comparable ability to rule out thoracolumbar (TL) fractures as traditional imaging methods. The goal is to facilitate early clearance of the TL spine without an immediate requirement for radiological tests, thereby minimizing unnecessary utilization of TL-spine imaging. Methods: A prospective, observational study was conducted on trauma patients with suspected TL injury. To achieve early TL clearance, the CDT assessed criteria such as absence of pain, tenderness, and pain-free axial movement and flexion. The study enrolled alert trauma patients with thoracic and/or lumbar spine injuries, defined by the Glasgow Coma Scale of 15. The study excluded patients not aligning with CDT criteria, such as those who received intravenous opioid analgesia within 4 h and those unable to stand due to suspected pelvic or lower limb injuries. Results: Following the completion of the CDT steps, there were 31 true negative cases, signifying the absence of TL fractures according to both CDT and imaging studies. The sensitivity of the CDT was 99.38% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 96.59%–99.98%), specificity 9.1% (95% CI: 6.30%–12.73%), negative predictive value (NPV) 96.87% (95% CI: 81.02%–99.56%), positive predictive value (PPV) 34.19% (95% CI: 33.38%–35.00%), negative likelihood ratio (LHR) 0.07 (95% CI: 0.01–0.49), and positive LHR 1.09 (95% CI: 1.06–1.13). The sensitivity, specificity, NPV, PPV, negative LHR, and positive LHR varied with each step in the CDT. Notably, the overall sensitivity was high; however, the stepwise sensitivity decreased, albeit with an improvement in specificity with each further step in the tool. The overall sensitivity in the study cohort (n = 500) was high; however, the stepwise sensitivity decreased, albeit with an improvement in the specificity. Conclusions: The CDT to rule out TL fracture is a feasible bedside stepwise tool in fully awake trauma patients after a thorough clinical neurological examination on arrival. The tool could help Level II or III trauma centers avoid secondary triage to the higher center.

Abstract Enhanced phytoremediation offers a rapid and eco-friendly approach for cleaning agricultural soil contaminated with copper and cadmium which pose a direct threat to food scarcity and security. The current study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the two commonly used additives, IAA and EDTA, for the remediation of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) contaminated soils using sunflower and maize. The plants were cultivated in pots under controlled conditions with four sets of treatments: control (0), Cu50/Cd50, Cu50/Cd50 + EDTA, and Cu50/Cd50 + IAA. The results showed that Cu50/Cd50 mg/kg drastically compromised the phytoremediation potential of both plants, as evident by reduced shoot and root length, and lower biomass. However, the augmentation of Cu50/Cd50 with EDTA or IAA improved the tested parameters. In sunflower, EDTA enhanced the accumulation of Cu and Cd by 58% and 21%, respectively, and improved plant biomass by 41%, compared to control treatment. However, IAA exhibited higher accumulation of Cu and Cd by 64% and 25%, respectively, and enhanced plant biomass by 43%. In case of maize, IAA was superior to EDTA which enhanced the accumulation of Cu and Cd by 87% and 32% respectively, and increased the plant biomass by 57%, compared to control treatment. Our findings demonstrate that foliar IAA is more effective than EDTA in enhancing the phytoremediation potential of sunflower and maize for Cu and Cd.

Abstract This is an interim analysis of the Beta-blocker (Propranolol) use in traumatic brain injury (TBI) based on the high-sensitive troponin status (BBTBBT) study. The BBTBBT is an ongoing double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial with a target sample size of 771 patients with TBI. We sought, after attaining 50% of the sample size, to explore the impact of early administration of beta-blockers (BBs) on the adrenergic surge, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and the TBI biomarkers linked to the status of high-sensitivity troponin T (HsTnT). Patients were stratified based on the severity of TBI using the Glasgow coma scale (GCS) and HsTnT status (positive vs negative) before randomization. Patients with positive HsTnT (non-randomized) received propranolol (Group-1; n = 110), and those with negative test were randomized to receive propranolol (Group-2; n = 129) or placebo (Group-3; n = 111). Propranolol was administered within 24 h of injury for 6 days, guided by the heart rate (> 60 bpm), systolic blood pressure (≥ 100 mmHg), or mean arterial pressure (> 70 mmHg). Luminex and ELISA-based immunoassays were used to quantify the serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-18), TBI biomarkers [S100B, Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE), and epinephrine]. Three hundred and fifty patients with comparable age (mean 34.8 ± 9.9 years) and gender were enrolled in the interim analysis. Group 1 had significantly higher baseline levels of IL-6, IL-1B, S100B, lactate, and base deficit than the randomized groups (p = 0.001). Group 1 showed a significant temporal reduction in serum IL-6, IL-1β, epinephrine, and NSE levels from baseline to 48 h post-injury (p = 0.001). Patients with severe head injuries had higher baseline levels of IL-6, IL-1B, S100B, and HsTnT than mild and moderate TBI (p = 0.01). HsTnT levels significantly correlated with the Injury Severity Score (ISS) (r = 0.275, p = 0.001), GCS (r = − 0.125, p = 0.02), and serum S100B (r = 0.205, p = 0.001). Early Propranolol administration showed a significant reduction in cytokine levels and TBI biomarkers from baseline to 48 h post-injury, particularly among patients with positive HsTnT, indicating the potential role in modulating inflammation post-TBI. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04508244. It was registered first on 11/08/2020. Recruitment started on 29 December 2020 and is ongoing. Our research seeks to assess the influence of nuclear energy technology on carbon emissions in the top 10 European economies comprising the topmost nuclear energy R&D budget (France, Germany, Russia, the Netherlands, the UK, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Italy, and Switzerland). Unlike prior investigations predominantly relying on panel data methodologies without considering the distinctive characteristics of each economy, our study employs the advanced 'Quantile-on-Quantile' approach. This novel methodology enables us to investigate the interactions between variables within each unique nation, thereby improving the precision of our analysis. As a result, the study provides a thorough global perspective, revealing nuanced findings pertinent to each economy's specific attributes. Our outcomes demonSstrate a positive interconnection between nuclear energy technology and carbon emissions across various quantiles in our analyzed nations. Additionally, the study highlights diverse patterns in these associations within individual economies. These findings emphasize the significance of policymakers performing comprehensive measurements and devising effective strategies to monitor fluctuations in nuclear energy technology and carbon emissions.

Receptor protein kinases (RPKs) critically provide the basic infrastructure to sense, perceive, and conduct the signalling events at the cell surface of organisms. The importance of LRR-RLKs has been well studied in plants, but much less information has been reported in oomycetes. In this work, we have silenced the PcLRR-RK3 and characterised its functional importance in Phytophthora capsici. PcLRR-RK3 was predicted to encode signal peptides, leucine-rich repeats, transmembrane, and kinase domains. PcLRR-RK3-silenced transformants showed impaired colony growth, decreased deformed sporangia, and reduced zoospores count. The mycelium of silenced transformants did not penetrate within the host tissues and showed defects in the pathogenicity of P. capsici. Interestingly, gene silencing also weakens the ability of zoospores germination and penetration into host tissues and fails to produce necrotic lesions. Furthermore, PcLRR-RK3 localisation was found to be the plasma membrane of the cell. Altogether, our results revealed that PcLRR-RK3 was required for the regulation of vegetative growth, zoospores penetration, and establishment into host leaf tissues.

Statistical process control consists of sophisticated and well-organized methods which contribute to monitor and improve the quality of a product. Control charts are now routinely used in many applied areas to enhance the quality of products. In this study, a general framework is presented to construct univariate control charts for joint monitoring using the information theoretic approach. To this end, we monitor a process by maximizing the entropy and by minimizing the cross entropy. Information control charts are free from strict distributional assumptions, as information charts are based on information discrepancy between the initial moment μ0 and the data moments rt . These charts can jointly monitor mean and variance and thus provide a unified approach that is helpful in reducing the labor for designing separate charts. Besides real data applications, in this study, Monte Carlo simulations are used to assess the performance of the information charts using the average run length as a performance criterion assuming different distributions including normal, gamma, exponential, lognormal,Weibull and beta. Furthermore, a comparison with the traditional charts is also given for each distribution.

Abstract Background Dengue fever has become a significant worldwide health concern, because of its high morbidity rate and the potential for an increase in mortality rates due to lack of adequate treatment. There is an immediate need for the development of effective medication for dengue fever. Methods Homology modeling of dengue virus (DENV) non-structural 4B (NS4B) protein was performed by SWISS-MODEL to predict the 3D structure of the protein. Structure validation was conducted using PROSA, PROCHECK, Ramachandran plot, and VERIFY-3D. MOE software was used to find out the in-Silico inhibitory potential of the five triterpenoids against the DENV-NS4B protein. Results The SWISS-MODEL was employed to predict the three-dimensional protein structure of the NS4B protein. Through molecular docking, it was found that the chosen triterpenoid NS4B protein had a high binding affinity interaction. It was observed that the NS4B protein binding energy for 15-oxoursolic acid, betulinic acid, ursolic acid, lupeol, and 3-o-acetylursolic acid were − 7.18, − 7.02, − 5.71, − 6.67 and − 8.00 kcal/mol, respectively. Conclusions NS4B protein could be a promising target which showed good interaction with tested triterpenoids which can be developed as a potential antiviral drug for controlling dengue virus pathogenesis by inhibiting viral replication. However, further investigations are necessary to validate and confirm their efficacy.

Abstract Among the several threats to humanity by anthropogenic activities, contamination of the environment by heavy metals is of great concern. Upon entry into the food chain, these metals cause serious hazards to plants and other organisms including humans. Use of microbes for bioremediation of the soil and stress mitigation in plants are among the preferred strategies to provide an efficient, cost-effective, eco-friendly solution of the problem. The current investigation is an attempt in this direction where fungal strain PH1 was isolated from the rhizosphere of Parthenium hysterophorus which was identified as Aspergillus niger by sequence homology of the ITS 1 and ITS 4 regions of the rRNA. The strain was tested for its effect on growth and biochemical parameters as reflection of its potential to mitigate Pb stress in Zea mays exposed to 100, 200 and 500 µg of Pb/g of soil. In the initial screening, it was revealed that the strain has the ability to tolerate lead stress, solubilize insoluble phosphate and produce plant growth promoting hormones (IAA and SA) and other metabolites like phenolics, flavonoids, sugar, protein and lipids. Under 500 µg of Pb/g of soil, Z. mays exhibited significant growth retardation with a reduction of 31% in root length, 30.5% in shoot length, 57.5% in fresh weight and 45.2% in dry weight as compared to control plants. Inoculation of A. niger to Pb treated plants not only restored root and shoot length, rather promoted it to a level significantly higher than the control plants. Association of the strain modulated the physio-hormonal attributes of maize plants that resulted in their better growth which indicated a state of low stress. Additionally, the strain boosted the antioxidant defence system of the maize there by causing a significant reduction in the ascorbic acid peroxidase (1.5%), catalase (19%) and 1,1-diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (33.3%), indicating a lower stress condition as compared to their non-inoculated stressed plants. Based on current evidence, this strain can potentially be used as a biofertilizer for Pb-contaminated sites where it will improve overall plant health with the hope of achieving better biological and agricultural yields.

The effect of binary blending of recycled aggregates and nylon fibers on the workability and flexural strength of concrete has been investigated in this work. An equal dosage of recycled aggregates from demolished wastes and conventional aggregates was used with 0.5 water cement ratio in preparing a mix of 1:2:4. Nylon fibers were used from 0% to 2% with an increment of 0.25% by weight of cement to reinforce the concrete. The slump cone test was determined for all nine batches of the concrete. Workability was observed to reduce with an increase in the content of nylon fibers. Flexural strength was evaluated by testing three prism specimens of 150mm x 150mm x 500mm size in each batch. A comparison of test results with control concrete (0% nylon fibers) and recycled aggregate concrete (with 50% recycled aggregates and without fibers) showed that nylon fibers helped in overcoming the loss of flexural strength due to the addition of recycled aggregates. The optimum dosage was recorded as equal to 1.5% with an increase in strength equal to 19.13% and 52.45% in comparison to conventional and recycled aggregate concrete.

Amidst the uncertainties of climate policy, investing in nuclear energy technology emerges as a sustainable strategy, fostering innovation in a critical sector, while simultaneously addressing urgent environmental concerns and managing budgetary dynamics. Our investigation inspects the asymmetric influence of climate policy uncertainty on nuclear energy technology in the top 10 nations with the highest nuclear energy R&D budgets (Germany, Japan, China, France, USA, UK, India, South Korea, Russia, and Canada). Previous studies adopted panel data methods to evaluate the linkage between climate policy uncertainty and nuclear energy technology. Nonetheless, these investigations overlooked the variability in this association across various countries. Conversely, this investigation introduces an innovative tool, ‘Quantile-on-Quantile’ to probe this connection merely for every economy. This methodology concedes for a more accurate evaluation, offering a holistic global perspective and delivering tailored insights for individual countries. The findings uncover that climate policy uncertainty significantly reduces nuclear energy technology budgets across multiple quantiles in most selected economies. Additionally, our results highlight the asymmetries in the correlations between our variables across the nations. These findings stress the need for policymakers to conduct thorough assessments and skillfully manage climate policy uncertainty and nuclear energy budgets.

This study evaluated the refinement of sorghum, corn, and cowpea grains using the processing steps and equipment originally designed for wheat milling that consists of a conventional gradual reduction system. The need to mill these grains resulted from a desire to produce alternative ingredients for developing new fortified blended extruded foods used for food aid programming. Milling of white sorghum grain resulted in a crude protein content of 7.4% (wb) for both whole and coarse-milled flour. The crude protein content in whole fine-milled sorghum was 6.8% (wb), which was significantly lower than that of whole coarse flour at 9.3% (wb). A decrease in the ash content of sorghum flour correlates with the decortication process. However, degermed corn, fine and coarse, had significantly different crude protein content of 6.0 ± 0.2% (wb) and 7.7 ± 0.06% (wb), respectively. Degerming of corn improved the quality of corn flour (fine and coarse) by reducing the crude fat content from 3.3 ± 0.18% (wb) to 1.2 ± 0.02% (wb) and 0.6 ± 0.13% (wb), respectively. This helped increase the starch content from 60.1 ± 0.28% (wb) in raw corn to 74.7 ± 0.93% (wb) and 71.8 ± 0.00% (wb) in degermed fine and coarse corn flour, respectively. Cowpea milling did not produce differences in the milling stream outputs when the crude fat and crude protein were compared. Whole flour from the grains had higher milling yields than decorticated flour. This study demonstrated that a mill dedicated to wheat size reduction can be adapted to refine other grains to high quality.

In this work, an Ag@Cu/TiO2 ternary nanocomposite was synthesized by a simple chemical methodology and subsequently studied for the photocatalytic degradation of rose bengal (RB) dye under visible light as well as its hydrogen production. The shape, size and topographical analysis by scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that all the constituents are well intercalated and are in the nano range. The energy dispersive X-ray analysis of the Ag@Cu/TiO2 showed the presence of Ti, O, Cu and Ag and the absence of any other impurities, while the mapping analysis showed their uniform distribution. The X-ray photon spectroscopy also showed successful interaction between the components. Furthermore, the changes in the chemical state of Ti2p were examined. The band gap of Ag@Cu/TiO2 using the Tauc plot relations was found to be the lowest at 2.86 eV in comparison to pure TiO2 (3.28 eV), binary Ag/TiO2 (3.13 eV) and Cu/TiO2 (3.00 eV). The Ag@Cu/TiO2 displayed the lowest photoluminescence intensity, suggesting the highest degradation efficiency and lowest recombination rate. The application of Ag@Cu/TiO2 toward the photocatalytic degradation of RB dye exhibited a degradation rate of ~81.07%, which exceeds the efficiency of pure TiO2 by 3.31 times. Apart from this, the hydrogen production of Ag@Cu/TiO2 was found to be 17.1 μmol h−1 g−1, suggesting that copper and silver synergistically contributed, thereby resulting in the increased hydrogen production of pure TiO2.

Abstract Background Sex-related differences in colorectal (CRC) incidence and mortality are well-documented. However, the impact of sex on metabolic pathways that drive cancer growth is not well understood. High expression of asparagine synthetase (ASNS) is associated with inferior survival for female CRC patients only. Here, we used a CRISPR/Cas9 technology to generate HCT116 ASNS −/− and HCT 116 ASNS +/+ cancer cell lines. We examine the effects of ASNS deletion on tumor growth and the subsequent rewiring of metabolic pathways in male and female Rag2/IL2RG mice. Results ASNS loss reduces cancer burden in male and female tumor-bearing mice (40% reduction, q < 0.05), triggers metabolic reprogramming including gluconeogenesis, but confers a survival improvement (30 days median survival, q < 0.05) in female tumor-bearing mice alone. Transcriptomic analyses revealed upregulation of G-protein coupled estrogen receptor (GPER1) in tumors from male and female mice with HCT116 ASNS −/− xenograft. Estradiol activates GPER1 in vitro in the presence of ASNS and suppresses tumor growth. Conclusions Our study indicates that inferior survival for female CRC patients with high ASNS may be due to metabolic reprogramming that sustains tumor growth. These findings have translational relevance as ASNS/GPER1 signaling could be a future therapeutic target to improve the survival of female CRC patients.

This study discusses Shewhart control charts to monitor the mean of non-normally distributed data using extensive Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, Weibull, exponential, and generalized exponential distributions are used to conduct a systematic study. Different parameters settings are considered to evaluate the effectiveness of the Shewhart charts based on the normal approximation. The results show significant differences between the charts using generalized exponential and Weibull distributions. In particular, the generalized exponential distribution based chart achieves the desired average run length of 370 with a single threshold value across a wide range of shape parameter combinations. On the other hand, the Weibull distribution requires different threshold values depending on its shape parameter. These findings highlight the significance of the two most commonly used distributions in reliability studies and their impact on control chart performance.

While the structural organization and molecular biology of neurons are well characterized, the physical process of axonal elongation remains elusive. The classic view posited elongation occurs through the deposition of cytoskeletal elements in the growth cone at the tip of a stationary array of microtubules. Yet, recent studies reveal axonal microtubules and docked organelles flow forward in bulk in the elongating axons of Aplysia, chick sensory, rat hippocampal, and Drosophila neurons. Noting that the morphology, molecular components, and subcellular flow patterns of growth cones strongly resemble the leading edge of migrating cells and the polar regions of dividing cells, our working hypothesis is that axonal elongation utilizes the same physical mechanisms that drive cell crawling and cell division. As a test of that hypothesis, here we take experimental data sets of sub-cellular flow patterns in cells undergoing cytokinesis, mesenchymal migration, amoeboid migration, neuronal migration, and axonal elongation. We then apply active fluid theory to develop a biophysical model that describes the different sub-cellular flow profiles across these forms of motility and how this generates cell motility under low Reynolds numbers. The modeling suggests that mechanisms for generating motion are shared across these processes, and differences arise through modifications of sub-cellular adhesion patterns and the profiles of internal force generation. Collectively, this work suggests that ameboid and mesenchymal cell crawling may have arisen from processes that first developed to support cell division, that growth cone motility and cell crawling are closely related, and that neuronal migration and axonal elongation are fundamentally similar, differing primarily in the motion and strength of adhesion under the cell body.

This research introduces an innovative methodology for the integrated modeling, simulation, and analysis of two fingers, with particular emphasis on their fundamental roles in everyday tasks. In this study, we provide two nonlinear control strategies, specifically Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and Feedback Linearization Control (FLC), to achieve accurate and stable finger movements. As mentioned earlier, the controllers are utilized in the context of a biomechanical model consisting of two fingers, each possessing two degrees of freedom. These controllers enable the coordination of flexion and extension movements. The research conducted in our study emphasizes the coordinated regulation of finger movements, enabling the achievement of flexion through the utilization of two nonlinear controllers. By implementing these sophisticated control mechanisms, we can effectively showcase our model’s fidelity in adhering to the physiological limitations inherent to human fingers in their natural state. In addition, the proposed controllers demonstrate sound mitigation of non-linearities, such as load variations, different velocities, positional changes, and damping forces. This approach presents several advantages, such as handling non-linearities, guaranteeing robustness, choosing suitable parameters, and conducting comparative analysis. In order to substantiate our findings, we develop the nonlinear model utilizing the MATLAB/Simulink software. The findings of our study demonstrate effective regulation and control of the two-finger model’s position. In our study, we were able to get flexion angles of θ 1 = 1 . 221 rad and θ 2 = 1 . 396 rad using the sliding mode control (SMC) technique, and flexion angles of θ 1 = 1 . 047 rad and θ 2 = 1 . 134 rad using the fuzzy logic control (FLC) technique, all within a time frame of 5 s. These results serve to illustrate the applicability and significance of our proposed methodology.

Inflammation coupled with oxidative stress contribute to the pathogenicity of various clinical disorders. Oxidative stress arises from an imbalance between production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defense system, leading to cellular damages. The study investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of polysaccharides isolated from Lepidium sativum seed-coat mucilage. The water-soluble polysaccharides were extracted from mucilage and fractionated using gel permeation chromatography. The radical scavenging potential of various fractions was determined using DPPH, H2O2, and lipid peroxidation assays. The most effective EC50 was recorded for F53 (57.41 ± 1.34 μg/mL), followed by F20 (69.19 ± 0.61 μg/mL) and F52 (75.06 ± 0.45 μg/mL). In vitro anti-inflammatory effect was determined through human membrane stabilization assay while the in vivo effect was evaluated using a carrageenan-induced paw edema in mouse model where F53 demonstrated significant (P = 0.05) anti-inflammatory potential (92.60 % compared to diclofenac sodium 91.46 %). GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of galacturonic acid and glucuronic acid as main acidic monosaccharides along with varying quantities of rhamnose, arabinose, and maltose as prominent neutral monosaccharides. The study concludes that cress seed mucilage contains potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory polysaccharides. Further studies on the mode of action of these polysaccharides could provide deeper insights into their potential use as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents.

In this manuscript, the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger’s equation (PNLSE) is considered, which has many implications in various fields such as ferromagnetic material, nonlinear optics, and optical fibers. The focus of this paper is to obtain soliton solutions of the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger’s equation by implementing two analytical methods, namely, tanh–coth method and energy balance method. As an outcome, a various soliton solutions like, breather solitary wave, lump type soliton in periodic background, singular type soliton, and periodic soliton solution obtain via Mathematica. Additionally, the 2D, 3D, and contour plots are used to visualize the graphical propagation of the achieved soliton solutions by selecting appropriate parametric values.

Sesame crop is widely recognized as contributor in global oil production. Potassium (K) and zinc (Zn) being responsible for oil synthesis pathways were applied in a field trial at agronomy research farm of Agriculture University Peshawar to assess their effects on sesame during summer season 2022. Four Zn foliar sprays (0, 2, 4 and 6 %) and four K levels (0, 60, 80 and 100 kg ha-1 ) were tested in a randomized complete design with three replications. Results exhibited that K and Zn interaction for all parameters was non-significant. However, K and Zn at 60 kg ha-1 and 4 % Zn ha-1 solely applied enhanced agronomic and quality attributes such as plant height (174.0 and 176.2 cm), branches/ plant (12.3 and 12.0), capsules/ plant (70 and 71), seeds/capsule (55 and 55), thousand seeds weight (3.0 and 3.0 g), flowering days (53 and 52), maturity days (104 and 102) biological yield (3583 and 3585 kg ha-1 ), seed yield (872 and 861 kg ha-1 ), oil content (47.4 and 48.3 %), oil yield (417 and 416 kg ha- 1 )respectively. Moreover, 100 kg K recorded higher potassium content (3.85 %) while Zn spray at 4 % noted higher Zn content (1.63 %) and seed protein content (20.1 %). Correlation analysis showed positive impact of increasing seed yield on all quality attributes. Thus, applying K at 60 kg and 4 % Zn foliar ha-1 is recommended for improved yield and quality of sesame in agro-climatic conditions of Peshawar region.

Abstract Background Guava is a fruit prone to rapid spoilage following harvest, attributed to continuous and swift physicochemical transformations, leading to substantial postharvest losses. This study explored the efficacy of xanthan gum (XG) coatings applied at various concentrations (0.25, 0.5, and 0.75%) on guava fruits (Gola cultivar) over a 15-day storage period. Results The results indicated that XG coatings, particularly at 0.75%, substantially mitigated moisture loss and decay, presenting an optimal concentration. The coated fruits exhibited a modified total soluble soluble solids, an increased total titratable acidity, and an enhanced sugar-acid ratio, collectively enhancing overall quality. Furthermore, the XG coatings demonstrated the remarkable ability to preserve bioactive compounds, such as total phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidants, while minimizing the levels of oxidative stress markers, such as electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde, and H2O2. The coatings also influenced cell wall components, maintaining levels of hemicellulose, cellulose, and protopectin while reducing water-soluble pectin. Quantitative analysis of ROS-scavenging enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase, revealed significant increases in their activities in the XG-coated fruits compared to those in the control fruits. Specifically, on day 15, the 0.75% XG coating demonstrated the highest SOD and CAT activities while minimizing the reduction in APX activity. Moreover, XG coatings mitigated the activities of fruit-softening enzymes, including pectin methylesterase, polygalacturonase, and cellulase. Conclusions This study concludes that XG coatings play a crucial role in preserving postharvest quality of guava fruits by regulating various physiological and biochemical processes. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential application of XG as a natural coating to extend the shelf life and maintain the quality of guava fruits during storage.

Abstract Background Potato serves as a major non-cereal food crop and income source for small-scale growers in Punjab, Pakistan. Unfortunately, improper fertilization practices have led to low crop yields, worsened by challenging environmental conditions and poor groundwater quality in the Cholistan region. To address this, we conducted an experiment to assess the impact of two fertilizer application approaches on potato cv. Barna using plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) coated biofertilizers. The first approach, termed conventional fertilizer application (CFA), involved four split applications of PGPB-coated fertilizers at a rate of 100:75 kg acre–1 (N and P). The second, modified fertilizer application (MFA), employed nine split applications at a rate of 80:40 kg acre–1. Results The MFA approach significantly improved various plant attributes compared to the CFA. This included increased plant height (28%), stem number (45%), leaf count (46%), leaf area index (36%), leaf thickness (three-folds), chlorophyll content (53%), quantum yield of photosystem II (45%), photosynthetically active radiations (56%), electrochromic shift (5.6%), proton flux (24.6%), proton conductivity (71%), linear electron flow (72%), photosynthetic rate (35%), water use efficiency (76%), and substomatal CO2 (two-folds), and lowered non-photochemical quenching (56%), non-regulatory energy dissipation (33%), transpiration rate (59%), and stomatal conductance (70%). Additionally, the MFA approach resulted in higher tuber production per plant (21%), average tuber weight (21.9%), tuber diameter (24.5%), total tuber yield (29.1%), marketable yield (22.7%), seed-grade yield (9%), specific gravity (9.6%), and soluble solids (7.1%). It also reduced undesirable factors like goli and downgrade yields by 57.6% and 98.8%, respectively. Furthermore, plants under the MFA approach exhibited enhanced nitrogen (27.8%) and phosphorus uptake (40.6%), with improved N (26.1%) and P uptake efficiency (43.7%) compared to the CFA approach. Conclusion The use of PGPB-coated N and P fertilizers with a higher number of splits at a lower rate significantly boosts potato production in the alkaline sandy soils of Cholistan.

Objective: The present research was conducted to evaluate the negative effects of nicotine powder on the blood physiology, and biochemical and histological alterations of Labeo rohita. Materials and Methods: Fish were divided into four groups (1–4). Fish groups 2, 3, and 4 were exposed to different concentrations of nicotine, such as 0.75, 1.25, and 1.75 mg/l, while group 1 acted as a control. To find out the long-term impact of nicotine on body physiology, we conducted a 42-day experiment. After the completion of the experiment, hematology, biochemical assays, and histology were done. Results: Results revealed a considerable increase in HGB, red blood cells, WBCs, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, red cell distribution width -SD, procalcitonin, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, very low-density lipoprotein, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, globulin, thyroid stimulating hormone, BUN, creatinine, and blood glucose levels, whereas mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, RDW, platelet, high-density lipoprotein, albumin, total proteins, and T3 levels were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) decreased in exposed fish as compared to control group fish. Histological alterations showed that exposure to smokeless nicotine causes deleterious and degenerative effects in the liver, kidney, and gills of exposed fish. Conclusion: Nicotine administration in fish results in adverse effects on different biochemical and hematological parameters and causes histological alterations in some vital organs of exposed fish. Abstract Tanacetum falconeri is a significant flowering plant that possesses cytotoxic, insecticidal, antibacterial, and phytotoxic properties. Its chemodiversity and bioactivities, however, have not been thoroughly investigated. In this work, several extracts from various parts of T. falconeri were assessed for their chemical profile, antioxidant activity, and potential for enzyme inhibition. The total phenolic contents of T. falconeri varied from 40.28 ± 0.47 mg GAE/g to 11.92 ± 0.22 mg GAE/g in various extracts, while flavonoid contents were found highest in TFFM (36.79 ± 0.36 mg QE/g extract) and lowest (11.08 ± 0.22 mg QE/g extract) in TFSC (chloroform extract of stem) in similar pattern as found in total phenolic contents. Highest DPPH inhibition was observed for TFFC (49.58 ± 0.11 mg TE/g extract) and TFSM (46.33 ± 0.10 mg TE/g extract), whereas, TFSM was also potentially active against (98.95 ± 0.57 mg TE/g) ABTS radical. In addition, TFSM was also most active in metal reducing assays: CUPRAC (151.76 ± 1.59 mg TE/g extract) and FRAP (101.30 ± 0.32 mg TE/g extract). In phosphomolybdenum assay, the highest activity was found for TFFE (1.71 ± 0.03 mg TE/g extract), TFSM (1.64 ± 0.035 mg TE/g extract), TFSH (1.60 ± 0.033 mg TE/g extract) and TFFH (1.58 ± 0.08 mg TE/g extract), while highest metal chelating activity was recorded for TFSH (25.93 ± 0.79 mg EDTAE/g extract), TFSE (22.90 ± 1.12 mg EDTAE/g extract) and TFSC (19.31 ± 0.50 mg EDTAE/g extract). In biological screening, all extracts had stronger inhibitory capacity against AChE while in case of BChE the chloroform extract of flower (TFFC) and stem (TFSC) showed the highest activities with inhibitory values of 2.57 ± 0.24 and 2.10 ± 0.18 respectively. Similarly, TFFC and TFSC had stronger inhibitory capacity (1.09 ± 0.015 and 1.08 ± 0.002 mmol ACAE/g extract) against α-Amylase and (0.50 ± 0.02 and 0.55 ± 0.02 mmol ACAE/g extract) α-Glucosidase. UHPLC-MS study of methanolic extract revealed the presence of 133 components including sterols, triterpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, and coumarins. The total phenolic contents were substantially linked with all antioxidant assays in multivariate analysis. These findings were validated by docking investigations, which revealed that the selected compounds exhibited high binding free energy with the enzymes tested. Finally, it was found that T. falconeri is a viable industrial crop with potential use in the production of functional goods and nutraceuticals.

The demolishing waste generated due to demolishing of the structures has proved difficult to handle due to scarcity of the dumping space particularly in urban areas. Its use in new concrete solves the problem to some extent but developed products differ in properties both at fresh and hardened states. To overcome the deficiency nylon fibers are proposed in this work. The compressive and tensile strength of the proposed concrete at a hardened state and workability as fresh properties of concrete are studied. Conventional and recycled aggregates were used in equal proportions. Nylon fibers of 1 mm diameter and 25 mm length were used from 0.25% to 2% with a 0.25% increment in each successive batch were used. Using 1:2:4 mix with water cement ratio equal to 0.5, a total of 10 mixes were designed. The workability of each mix was evaluated by the slump cone test. Water curing for 28 days was used for five samples in each batch. Compressive and tensile strength were computed from the crushing load determined in the universal testing machine. Comparison of the results with those of control concrete revealed that 1.5% of nylon fibers along with 50% recycled aggregates produce maximum compressive strength of 930.16 (MPa) with 24% more than conventional concrete (24.16 MPa) and 56% more than recycled aggregate concrete (19.27 MPa) without nylon fibers. The tensile strength of the proposed concrete (3.66 MPa) was noticed 22% and 55% higher than the conventional concrete (3.0 MPa) and recycled aggregate concrete (2.36 MPa) at optimum dosage. Hence the impact of optimized doze of the nylon fiber shows improved strength properties of the concrete.

Abstract Mixture distributions are naturally extra attractive to model the heterogeneous environment of processes in reliability analysis than simple probability models. This focus of the study is to develop and Bayesian inference on the 3-component mixture of power distributions. Under symmetric and asymmetric loss functions, the Bayes estimators and posterior risk using priors are derived. The presentation of Bayes estimators for various sample sizes and test termination time (a fact of time after that test is terminated) is examined in this article. To assess the performance of Bayes estimators in terms of posterior risks, a Monte Carlo simulation along with real data study is presented.

Abstract In the current study, Azo-Thiohydantoins derivatives were synthesized and characterized by using various spectroscopic techniques including FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, elemental and HRMS analysis. The compounds were evaluated for alkaline phosphatase activity and it was observed that among all the synthesized compounds, derivative 7e exhibited substantial inhibitory activity (IC50 = 0.308 ± 0.065 µM), surpassing the standard inhibitor (L–Phenyl alanine, IC50 = 80.2 ± 1.1 µM). Along with this, these derivatives were comprehensively examined regarding the electronic properties and reactivity of the synthesized compounds using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, where the results were found very promising and the synthesized compound were found stable. After that, SwissADME evaluations highlighted compounds for their favorable physicochemical properties, including solubility and drug-likeness. Molecular docking exhibited the strong binding affinities of 7f and 7e derivatives with intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP), further supported by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. This comprehensive integration of experimental and computational approaches sheds the light on the potential therapeutic applications of the synthesized compounds. By providing a detailed investigation of these aspects, this research opens the avenues for the development of novel pharmacologically active compounds with diverse applications.

A unique nanocomposite GO/AlCrO3/Mn3O4/SiO2/SnO2 synthesized through hydrothermal method serves as an electrode material for electrochemical supercapacitors. The material structural and optical characteristics were studied using various techniques. Interestingly, the average crystallite sizes were 16.88, 21.2, 20.81 nm for AlCrO3, GO, and GO@AlCrO3@SiO2@Mn3O4@SnO2 nanocomposite, respectively. The nanocomposite displayed 16 nm spherical grains due to particle aggregation on the graphene oxide surface causing structural deviations evident in the Raman spectrum slope around 1578 cm−1. FTIR spectra revealed distinctive bands at 2097 cm−1 and 1523 cm−1 indicating metal–oxygen bonds. UV-Vis spectra disclosed a band gap of 2.85 eV and a zeta potential of 27.9 mV signifying stability. The hybrid electrode exhibited remarkable electrochemical performance boasting a specific capacitance of 2495 Fg−1 for scan rate of 10 mVs−1. Given its robust performance under high current densities, enduring stability and energy efficiency the material holds significant promise as an energy storage material particularly for supercapacitors.

Control charts play a vital role in process monitoring to ensure the product's desired standards. Due to rapid improvements in data collection methods, multivariate charts are preferred over univariate charts. This paper proposes a bivariate exponentially weighted moving average chart for the simultaneous monitoring of the mean vector of Gumbel's bivariate Pareto type II (also known as the Lomax distribution) time-between-events data. The performance of the proposed chart is assessed through average run length, median run length, and the standard deviation of the run length criteria. To show the implementation of the chart in the real world, illustrative examples are also presented.

This study explored the neuroprotective potential of fermented pomegranate (PG-F) against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced neurotoxicity in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and elucidated the underlying molecular mechanisms. The fermentation process, involving probiotics, transforms the hydrolyzable tannins in pomegranate juice into ellagic acid (EA) and gallic acid (GA), which are believed to contribute to its health benefits. Molecular docking simulations confirmed the stable interactions between EA, GA, and proteins associated with the antioxidant and anti-apoptotic pathways. PG-F significantly enhanced the viability of H2O2-treated cells, as evidenced by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays, cell morphology observations, and Hoechst 33342 staining. PG-F mitigated the H2O2-induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, restored mitochondrial membrane potential, and upregulated antioxidant gene expression. The PG-F treatment also attenuated the H2O2-induced imbalance in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and reduced the cleaved caspase-3, caspase-7, and caspase-9 levels, suppressing the apoptotic pathways. Further insights showed that PG-F inhibited the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and facilitated the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2), highlighting its role in modulating the key signaling pathways. A combined treatment with equivalent concentrations of EA and GA, as found in PG-F, induced remarkable cellular protection. Drug combination analysis using the Chou–Talalay method revealed a synergistic effect between EA and GA, emphasizing their combined efficacy. In conclusion, PG-F has significant neuroprotective effects against H2O2-induced neurotoxicity by modulating the antioxidant and anti-apoptotic pathways. The synergistic action of EA and GA suggests the therapeutic potential of PG-F in alleviating oxidative stress-associated neurodegenerative diseases.

The pervasive issue of heavy metal contamination in agricultural lands poses significant concerns and has wide-ranging implications for ecosystems. However, an encouraging solution lies in exploiting the potential of fungal endophytes to alleviate these detrimental effects. This study emphasized on improving the growth-promoting and chromium-alleviating capabilities of fungal endophytes, particularly Aspergillus sojae strain SH20, through ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Following UV treatment, SH20 exhibited significantly enhanced growth-promoting and chromium-alleviating capabilities in comparison to its non-irradiated counterpart. Distinctly, the UV-treated SH20 strain demonstrated an improved ability to accumulate and reduce toxic chromate in the soil, effectively addressing the growth constraints imposed by elevated chromium levels in Brassica napus L. The UV-irradiated SH20 variant boosted shoot length up to 3 times that of the control. Similarly, this fungal strain displayed a remarkable increase in the total fresh weight of the seedlings, recording nearly 17 times greater than the control. The isolate treated with UV light reduced the absorption of chromium by about 3 times in the roots, helping the young plants to grow well even when exposed to chromate stress. A drop in root colonization by the UV-treated strain further resulted in reduced chromate absorption by the roots. Also, the strain showed great skill in boosting the host's antioxidant defenses by reducing the buildup of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), increasing the removal of ROS, and improving the plant's antioxidant levels, including phenols and flavonoids. When the host plants were exposed to 25 ppm of Cr stress, the UV-irradiated variant SH 20 stimulated the production of flavonoids (246 μg/ml) and phenols (952 μg/ml) in comparison to the control (with 220 μg/ml of flavonoids and 919 μg/ml of phenols). In conclusion, this report highlights how exposing the A. sojae strain SH20 to UV light has the potential to enhance its abilities to promote growth and bioremediate. This suggests a promising solution for addressing heavy metal contamination in agricultural lands.

Amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) has emerged to be an outstanding strategy among multiple options available for improving solubility and consequently biological activity. Interestingly several binary SD systems continue to exhibit insufficient solubility over time. Therefore, the goal of current research was to design ternary amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) of hydrophobic model drug curcumin (CUR) to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate in turn, presenting enhanced anti-bacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. For this purpose several ternary solid dispersions (TSDs) consisting of Soluplus®, Syloid® XDP 3150, Syloid® 244 and Poloxamer® 188 in combination with HPMC E5 (binary carrier) were prepared using solvent evaporation method. Both solubility and dissolution testing of prepared solid dispersion were performed to determine the increase in solubility and dissolution. Solid state investigation was carried out utilizing infrared spectroscopy, also known as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM),Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).Optimized formulations were also tested for their biological effectiveness including anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Amid all Ternary formulations F3 entailing 20 % soluplus® remarkably improved the solubility (186 μg/ml ± 3.95) and consequently dissolution (91 % ± 3.89 %) of curcumin by 3100 and 9 fold respectively. These finding were also supported by FTIR, SEM, XRD and DSC. In-vitro antibacterial investigation of F3 also demonstrated significant improvement in antibacterial activity against both gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus) and gram negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli) bacteria. Among all the tested strains Staphylococcus aureus was found to be most susceptible with a zone of inhibition of 24 mm ± 2.87. Antioxidant activity of F3 was also notably enhanced (93 % ± 5.30) in contrast to CUR (69 % ± 4.79). In vitro anti-inflammatory assessment also exhibited that F3 markedly protected BSA (bovine serum albumin) from denaturation with percent BSA inhibition of 80 % ± 3.16 in comparison to CUR (49 % ± 2.91). Hence, F3 could be an effective solid dispersion system for the delivery of model hydrophobic drug curcumin.

The Fabaceae is renowned for its diverse range of chemical compounds with significant biological activities, making it a valuable subject for pharmacological studies. The chemical composition and biological activities of three Fabaceae species were investigated using methanol separately and in combination with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and glycerol for extraction. The results revealed the highest phenolic (49.59 ± 0.38 mg gallic acid equivalent/g), flavonoid (29.16 ± 0.39 mg rutin equivalent/g), and alkaloid (14.23 ± 0.54 mg atropine equivalent/g) contents in the Caesalpinia decapetala methanol extracts. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and DNA protection activity were the highest (0.88 ± 0.43 μg/mL IC50 and 2149.26 band intensity) in Albizia julibrissin methanol extracts. The α-amylase activity was highest in all methanol extracts ( C. decapetala (70.86 %) > Indigofera atropurpurea (65.34 %). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed 33 volatile compounds and, aamong these (Z)-9-octadecenamide was detected in the highest concentration ranging from 21.85 to 38.61 %. Objective: To evaluate the risk factors for developing vascular thrombosis at high altitude. Study Design: Prospective longitudinal study. Place and Duration of Study: Combined Military Hospital, Skardu Pakistan, from Mar 2018 to Feb 2020. Methodology: All individuals evacuated from high altitude with suspicion of vascular thrombosis were consecutively inducted and evaluated radiologically. Subjects diagnosed as VT were further categorized on basis of height of evacuation into high altitude, very high altitude and extremely high altitude categories. Results: Out of 295 individuals evacuated from HA, 54(18.3%) were diagnosed as VT. All patients were males. Mean age was 31+5.3 years. Cerebral venous thrombosis was diagnosed in 19(35%) and was the most frequent followed by pulmonary embolism in 18(33%) and deep venous thrombosis in 14(26%) patients. Abstract This protocol serves as a guiding source for a Campbell registered systematic review aiming to assess the effectiveness of Public‐Private Partnerships (PPPs) in education in Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries (LMICs). The primary question for this review is: What is known about the impact of PPPs on improving access (i.e., enrolment, attendance, drop‐out, and completion) and quality (i.e., students’ learning outcomes and teachers’ teaching practices) of primary and secondary schooling in LMICs? Using a predefined search query, we will retrieve studies from various databases including Scopus, Campbell Library, EBSCO Education Research Complete, NBER, Dissertation and Theses Global (ProQuest), along with other sources of grey literature. Covidence will be used for screening and extraction. A bias assessment tool will be used for the included studies. A standardised mean difference (SMD) effect size of Hedges’ g will be calculated for the outcome variables using RevMan. This review will provide updated evidence about the impact of PPP in school education across LMICs, which will be instrumental for policy and practice level decisions for education improvement.

The issue of arsenic (As) contamination in the environment has become a critical concern, impacting both human health and ecological equilibrium. Addressing this challenge requires a comprehensive strategy encompassing water treatment technologies, regulatory measures for industrial effluents, and the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices. In this study, diverse strategies were explored to enhance As accumulation in the presence of Acinetobacter bouvetii while safeguarding the host from the toxic effects of arsenate exposure. The sunflower seedlings associated with A. bouvetii demonstrated a favorable relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) even less than 100 ppm of As stress. Remarkably, the NAR and RGR of A. bouvetii-associated seedlings outperformed those of control seedlings cultivated without A. bouvetii in As-free conditions. Additionally, a markedly greater buildup of bio-transformed As was observed in A. bouvetii-associated seedlings (P = 0.05). An intriguing observation was the normal levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in A. bouvetii-associated seedlings, along with elevated activities of key enzymatic antioxidants like catalases (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidases (POD), along with non-enzymatic antioxidants (phenols and flavonoids). This coordinated antioxidant defense system likely contributed to the improved survival and growth of the host plant species amidst As stress. A. bouvetii not only augmented the growth of the host plants but also facilitated the uptake of bio-transformed As in the contaminated medium. The rhizobacterium's modulation of various biochemical and physiological parameters indicates its role in ensuring the better survival and progression of the host plants under As stress.

Abstract As the world grapples with sustainable energy and environmental preservation challenges, budgeting for bio‐resilience emerges as a pivotal step toward environmental sustainability. Our investigation delves into the influence of bioenergy technology budgets on the ecological footprint (ECF) in the top 10 nations that invest in bioenergy research and development (USA, China, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and the Netherlands). Prior research depended on panel data methods to explore the bioenergy technology‐environment nexus, disregarding the specific traits of individual countries. Contrarily, the existing research applies the quantile‐on‐quantile tool to improve the precision of our analysis by delivering a holistic worldwide viewpoint and customized perceptions for every economy. The findings indicate that dedicating budgets to bioenergy technology improves environmental quality by reducing ECF across several quantiles within our sample nations. Moreover, the outcomes uncover unique patterns in these relationships across multiple countries. These results stress the significance of policymakers conducting exhaustive assessments and implementing productive tactics to address bioenergy technology funding and ECF changes.

The aim of this paper is to study the nonlinear couple Drinfel’d–Sokolov–Wilson (DSW) equation under conformable differential operator (CDO) that plays an important role in describing the shallow water in fluid mechanics, plasma physics, nonlinear optics and Bose–Einstein condensate (soliton formation). The Tanh–Coth and energy balance techniques are implemented in this work to explore some travelling wave solutions. These analytical methods yield various solutions for the considered DSW equation. The solutions obtained from both method are expressed in the form of hyperbolic and trigonometric function. Furthermore, the dynamic behaviour of the obtained solutions are illustrated, via 2D and 3D curves. Additionally, the effect of the conformable differential operator on dynamics of wave solutions is studied via 2D graphs.

The increasing acknowledgment of the complex interplay between human actions and the natural world has generated a need to decipher human-environmental interdependence's ecological dynamics. The present research examines the intricate dynamics of the interplay between humans and the environment in China spanning 1975 to 2022. The results show that coal energy (i.e., -0.057, p < 0.050) and fossil fuel consumption (i.e., -0.766, p < 0.050) negatively affect renewable energy outcomes, highlighting the need for transitioning to cleaner energy sources. Conversely, energy use (0.006, p < 0.000), carbon pricing (0.480, p < 0.050), economic growth (0.0005, p < 0.050), and public awareness (0.040, p < 0.010) are positive drivers of renewable energy outcomes, suggesting the importance of policies promoting sustainable energy practices and raising environmental consciousness. Regarding sustainable consumption practices, materialistic practices (-0.0.004, p < 0.050), marketing strategies (-1.642, p < 0.000), and socioeconomic status (-2.026, p < 0.050) have adverse effects, while environmental awareness exhibits a positive influence. These findings underscore the significance of promoting environmentally conscious behavior and addressing societal factors that hinder sustainable consumption patterns. Furthermore, the study reveals that hedonic adaptation (0.036, p < 0.050) contributes to increased carbon emissions, indicating the need for strategies that mitigate the impact of changing living standards on the environment. Conversely, media penetration (-0.028, p < 0.010) and effective government communication are associated with decreased carbon emissions, underscoring the potential of media campaigns and informative communications to foster behavioral changes and encourage sustainable practices. Regulators may develop all-encompassing strategies to fight environmental damage and encourage a better tomorrow by providing incentives for using alternative energy sources, encouraging environmentally aware consumerism, and using the power of the press.

Annually resolved and absolutely dated proxy archives are necessary for contextualizing the rate and amplitude of anthropogenic climate change. High-resolution climate reconstructions are particularly important for remote regions where instrumental meteorological observations are limited in space and time. Here, we develop a robust, 260-year-long tree-ring width chronology from 32 Himalayan cedars (Cedrus deodara D. Don), which grew around 3000 m asl in the Kumrat Valley of the Hindu Kush region in northern Pakistan. Growth-climate response analyses reveal a significant negative correlation of -0.631 between our new standard chronology and March-April minimum temperatures (p < 0.001, n = 51). This inverse relationship between radial tree growth and early spring temperatures, together with positive correlations against precipitation totals at the onset of the growing season, suggest that warming-induced drought is the most limiting factor of sub-alpine forest growth in the Kumrat Valley. We then use the inverse growth-temperature association to reconstruct March-April minimum temperatures from 1812 to 2018 CE. The reconstruction explains 40 % of the instrumental record back to 1967, and exhibits the coldest and warmest spring conditions in 1815–1864 (6.67 ± 0.21°C) and 1918–1927 (8.11 ± 0.43°C), respectively. This pioneering study is indicative of the dendroclimatological potential in the Hindu Kush, where samples from living and relict trees of different species and elevational bands should be collected for advanced temperature and hydroclimate reconstructions.

Foreign exchange reserves (FER), especially dollar assets, are vital for a developing country to maintain economic stability, foster growth, and protect against unexpected amendments. In recent years, particularly since the onset of COVID-19, several emerging countries have experienced significant economic hardship due to a crisis in foreign reserves. This has led to inflation and disruptions in supply chains, healthcare, and various service facilities. Despite the gravity of this issue, previous studies have not investigated the causes and consequences of such sudden crises. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the causes and consequences of sudden FER crises in a developing country, specifically Bangladesh, through a systematic review. The study also explores innovative process-oriented policies to mitigate the immediate FER crisis. The systematic literature review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. It included 90 articles published between 2020 and 2023. The results discovered that the FER crisis in Bangladesh has been triggered by both external factors (such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, trade imbalances, and remittances) and internal factors (including large infrastructure projects, complexities in the banking sector, local project subsidies, a managed floating exchange rate, and an over-reliance on the ready-made garments sector). These factors escorted deflation of the national currency, causing further inflation, declining domestic purchasing capacity, and raising concerns about food security. Additionally, price hikes and unauthorized storage of daily necessities made accessing daily essentials challenging for locals. The government has implemented three policy interventions, including managing consumer demand, safeguarding the supply of goods, and regulating continuous market monitoring to overcome the challenges. This study proposes eight innovative process-oriented policy recommendations for mitigating the immediate foreign exchange crisis and promoting sustainable economic development. Overall, this study offers valuable contributions in developing sustainable global economic policies. It fosters improved recovery and reuse of materials and energy while advancing long-term growth in developing nations.

Abstract Plants are crucial because they give us food and oxygen. With the idea of living on other planets and taking long trips in space, we need to understand and explore the way how plants can survive in these strange places. However, while the gravity response on earth’s surface has been extensively studied in plants, in space, where the gravity is very weak, things get confusing. One of the intriguing and essential subjects for space life is understanding how plants can sustain themselves in microgravity conditions. To investigate this, various clinostat devices and the CRISPR/Cas9 technique are crucial tools for exploring the functioning of PIN-formed protein and related signal transduction pathways. In this review, we aim to provide researchers with a brief overview of the mechanisms of CRISPR/Cas9, which can be immensely helpful when using this method alongside clinostat machines. Our primary goal in this review is to address the missing gaps in existing literatures, focusing on how plants perceive gravity and experimental approaches applicable for studying their responses to microgravity, both on earth and in space.

Abstract The escalating presence of heavy metals (HMs) in the Panjkora River water and their impact on fish pose a significant challenge to both the ecological community and human health. Consequently, a study was conducted with the primary aim of elucidating their influence on human health-related issues. To address this, the concentrations of heavy metals, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), in both water and the fish species Crossocheilus diplocheilus were investigated across various locations within the study area. The quantification of HMs concentration was carried out utilizing an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The highest concentration in water was found as 0.060 mg/L for Pb and lowest for Fe, whereas the highest concentration in fish was 2.028 mg/kg for Pb and lowest for As. Human health risk associated with fish eating was evaluated by using health risk indices (HRI) for non-carcinogenic health risks and targeted cancer risk (TR) for carcinogenic health risks. The values of the health risk index (HRI) were found greater than 1 except Fe (0.0792), Zn (0.782), and Mn (0.541). The highest mean HRI > 1 was recorded for As (62.99), Cd (26.85), and Pb (10.56). This implies that fish consumption from river Panjkora is not safe up to some extent. Similarly, the TR value for As, Cd, and Pb was found 2.8 $$\times {10}^{-2}$$ × 10 - 2 , 1.6 $$\times {10}^{-2}$$ × 10 - 2 , 2.8 × $${10}^{-3}$$ 10 - 3 which showed cancer risk. There is a detected risk to human health associated with the consumption of fish from the Panjkora River. The government must implement adaptive measures to address this significant issue of water pollution in the study area. Additionally, there is a need for further extensive and prolonged research studies in this context.

Abstract Cotton, a crucial cash crop in Pakistan, faces persistent threats from diseases, notably the Cotton Leaf Curl Virus (CLCuV). Detecting these diseases accurately and early is vital for effective management. This paper offers a comprehensive account of the process involved in collecting, preprocessing, and analyzing an extensive dataset of cotton leaf images. The primary aim of this dataset is to support automated disease detection systems. We delve into the data collection procedure, distribution of the dataset, preprocessing stages, feature extraction methods, and potential applications. Furthermore, we present the preliminary findings of our analyses and emphasize the significance of such datasets in advancing agricultural technology. The impact of these factors on plant growth is significant, but the intrusion of plant diseases, such as Cotton Leaf Curl Disease (CLCuD) caused by the Cotton Leaf Curl Gemini Virus (CLCuV), poses a substantial threat to cotton yield. Identifying CLCuD promptly, especially in areas lacking critical infrastructure, remains a formidable challenge. Despite the substantial research dedicated to cotton leaf diseases in agriculture, deep learning technology continues to play a vital role across various sectors. In this study, we harness the power of two deep learning models, specifically the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). We evaluate these models using two distinct datasets: one from the publicly available Kaggle dataset and the other from our proprietary collection, encompassing a total of 1349 images capturing both healthy and disease-affected cotton leaves. Our meticulously curated dataset is categorized into five groups: Healthy, Fully Susceptible, Partially Susceptible, Fully Resistant, and Partially Resistant. Agricultural experts annotated our dataset based on their expertise in identifying abnormal growth patterns and appearances. Data augmentation enhances the precision of model performance, with deep features extracted to support both training and testing efforts. Notably, the CNN model outperforms other models, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 99% when tested against our proprietary dataset.

This article aims to discuss different estimation methods for the power generalized Weibull distribution. An extensive simulation study is carried out to assess the effectiveness of the estimation of model parameters using numerous well known classical methods of estimation. Furthermore, the Bayes estimators of the unknown parameters are also obtained under different loss functions. Monte Carlo simulations are used to assess the performances of the proposed estimators. Besides, bootstrap/ credible intervals are obtained based on considered methods of estimation. Finally, the potentiality of the distribution is illustrated by means of re-analyzing one real data set.

Abstract Objective To compare the effects of laparoscopic hepatectomy (LH) on the short-term and long-term outcomes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with and without clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH). Methods A systematic literature search of the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases was performed for articles published from inception to March 1, 2023. Meta-analysis of surgical and oncological outcomes was performed using a random effects model. Data were summarized as mean difference and risk ratio with 95% confidence intervals. Results Five cohort studies with a total of 310 HCC patients were included (CSPH 143; Non-CSPH 167). In terms of surgical outcomes, estimated blood loss and the length of hospital stay were significantly lower in the Non-CSPH group than in the CSPH group. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding other surgical outcomes, including the operative time, ratio of conversion to open surgery, and overall complication rate. In addition, there were also no significant differences between the two groups regarding the oncological outcomes, such as 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival. Conclusions HCC patients with and without CSPH who underwent LH had comparable surgical and oncological outcomes. LH is a safe and effective treatment for HCC patients with CSPH under the premise of rational screening of patients.
