Background Bovine mastitis is the most common infectious disease in dairy cattle with major economic implications for the dairy industry worldwide. Continuous monitoring for the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among bacterial isolates from dairy farms is vital not only for animal husbandry but also for public health. Methods In this study, the prevalence of AMR in 113 Escherichia coli isolates from cases of bovine clinical mastitis in Canada was investigated. Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion test with 18 antibiotics and microdilution method with 3 heavy metals (copper, zinc, and silver) was performed to determine the antibiotic and heavy-metal susceptibility. Resistant strains were assessed for efflux and ß-lactamase activities besides assessing biofilm formation and hemolysis. Whole-genome sequences for each of the isolates were examined to detect the presence of genes corresponding to the observed AMR and virulence factors. Results Phenotypic analysis revealed that 32 isolates were resistant to one or more antibiotics and 107 showed resistance against at least one heavy metal. Quinolones and silver were the most efficient against the tested isolates. Among the AMR isolates, AcrAB-TolC efflux activity and ß-lactamase enzyme activities were detected in 13 and 14 isolates, respectively. All isolates produced biofilm but with different capacities, and 33 isolates showed α-hemolysin activity. A positive correlation (Pearson r = + 0.89) between efflux pump activity and quantity of biofilm was observed. Genes associated with aggregation, adhesion, cyclic di-GMP, quorum sensing were detected in the AMR isolates corroborating phenotype observations. Conclusions This investigation showed the prevalence of AMR in E. coli isolates from bovine clinical mastitis. The results also suggest the inadequacy of antimicrobials with a single mode of action to curtail AMR bacteria with multiple mechanisms of resistance and virulence factors. Therefore, it calls for combinatorial therapy for the effective management of AMR infections in dairy farms and combats its potential transmission to the food supply chain through the milk and dairy products.

Given the potential of ingested particles to interact with enzymes in oral cavity, we compared different grades of SiO2 particles (food‐grade and non‐food grade nanoparticles (FG‐SiO2‐NP, NFG‐SiO2‐NP), and food grade microparticles (FG‐SiO2‐MP)) for their interaction with human salivary α‐amylase (HSA). There were differences in the agglomeration behavior and relative abundance of silanol and siloxane groups among different grades of SiO2 particles where FG‐SiO2‐NPs contained less cyclic siloxane groups but more silanol groups. Secondary structure and function of HSA were negatively impacted by FG‐SiO2‐NPs. In order to verify if this inhibition is mediated through surface interactions, pristine particles were compared with those interacted with pure protein (bovine serum albumin‐BSA) and with food matrix (milk) for HSA inhibition. BSA coating of SiO2 particles ameliorated HSA inhibition, but milk interacted ones showed an enhanced the HSA inhibition because of the presence of milk protease suggesting the relevance of surface interactions in manifesting potential negative impacts of silica particles used in food.

Use of nanoparticles (NPs) in the food industry raises dietary health concerns. Assessing dietary NPs remains challenged due the vast number of products and the resource-intensive nature of toxicity testing. Advancements in high-throughput transcriptomics, coupled with benchmark dose (BMD) analysis are poised to modernize chemical safety assessments. Despite the significance of surface absorbed proteins in determining the biological identity of nanoparticles (NPs) entering the human body, little is known about the surface corona and factors that shape their formation on dietary particles used as food additives. In this study, food grade NPs of silica and titania and their food additive counterparts (E551 and E171) were interacted with milk proteins or with skimmed milk and the levels of protein adsorption were quantified. Characteristics of proteins correlating with their level of adsorption to NPs were determined using partial least squares regression analysis. Results from individual protein–particle interactions revealed the significance of factors such as zeta potential, hydrophobicity and hydrodynamic size of particles, and protein characteristics such as the number of beta strands, isoelectric points, the number of amino acid units (Ile, Tyr, Ala, Gly, Pro, Asp, and Arg), and phosphorylation sites on their adsorption to particles. Similar regression analysis was performed to identify the characteristics of twenty abundant and enriched proteins (identified using LC-MS/MS analysis) for their association with the surface corona of milk-interacted particles. Contrary to individual protein–particle interactions, protein characteristics such as helices, turns, protein structures, disulfide bonds, the number of amino acid units (Cys, Met, Leu, and Trp), and Fe binding sites were significant for their association with the surface corona of milk interacted particles. This difference in factors identified from individual proteins and milk interacted particles suggested possible interactions of proteins with surface adsorbed biomolecules as revealed by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy and other biochemical assays.

While the wide-spectrum antimicrobial properties and stability of silver nanomaterials have been copiously utilized in many medical and consumer products, we found that Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is less susceptible to silver in comparison to Methicillin Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). Pre-exposure of MRSA to sub-lethal concentrations of AgNO3 caused 2.5-fold increase in LD50 of silver suggesting an inducible resistance mechanism. Studies involving gene expression profiling and efflux pump blockers showed the induction of P-type efflux pumps (Cop A, Cop Z and Nor B) as the principle mechanism conferring silver resistance in MRSA. Chlorpromazine—an efflux pump blocker increased sensitivity of MRSA to silver. Leveraging on these observations, silver resistance in MRSA was circumvented by enhancing the bioavailability of silver by cationic functioning of silver nanoparticles or by co-delivering silver together with chlorpromazine. Atomic Force Microscopy showed that poly-ethylene imine (PEI) functionalized silver nanoparticles adhere to bacterial cells which was found to increase the bioavailability, membrane rupture and cell death. The strategy of co-delivery of AgNO3 and chlorpromazine using chitosan-functionalized wormhole silica nanoparticles caused 12 log reduction in bacterial count which was 1000 times higher than bacterial reduction by AgNO3 alone. In short, these studies showed that circumventing antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria is possible by designed silver nanotechnology.

While silica particles are used extensively in food products, different grades and temperature variants of silica particles have not been compared for their physiochemical and biological properties. Different grades of silica (food-grade nanoparticles (FG-NPs), nonfood-grade nanoparticles (NFG-NPs), and food-grade micron particles (FG-MPs)) and the temperature variants generated by exposing FG-NPs to wet heating, dry heating, and refrigeration were compared for their physicochemical properties and interaction with trypsin. FG-NPs were similar to NFG-NPs and FG-MPs in their elemental composition and amorphous nature but had relatively less branched and ring siloxane groups than the latter ones. There were subtle but noticeable changes in the agglomeration behavior and relative abundance of different silica groups in FG-NPs exposed to food-handling temperatures. Secondary structure and function of trypsin were negatively impacted by FG-NPs and their temperature variants. Silica particles showed a "mixed-type inhibition" of trypsin resulting in partial digestion of bovine serum albumin. In conclusion, our studies showed differences in the surface chemistry of different grades of silica particles and temperature variants of FG-NPs and their negative impact on the structure and function of trypsin.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly being used in the food sector, yet little is known about the potential health risks associated with oral exposure to dietary NPs. In this study, the most widely used NPs in food industry including food grade silicon dioxide (SiO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver (Ag), along with their non-food grade and bulk counterparts, are characterized for physicochemical properties and molecular, cellular, and intracellular effects on human intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2 and HIEC-6). Silver NPs are the most cytotoxic and induce significant cellular changes in oxidative stress, Ca2+ flux and mitochondria function, leading to cellular junction disruption at the lowest exposure concentration. At higher testing concentrations, NPs but not microparticles of SiO2 and TiO2 cause sublethal cellular responses and remodel tight junctions without impairing epithelial integrity. To relate the cellular results to key events in GI disorder progression, NPs are exposed to an in vitro co-culture model for cow's milk allergy comprised of Caco-2 and allergy sera-primed mast cells (LUVA). All particle treatments increase the allergen delivery across intestinal epithelium and subsequent allergy responses. Overall, the study has identified a particle-dependent alteration in intestinal epithelium and highlighted potential safety concerns of dietary NPs.

This study was conducted to understand the effect of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on soil mobility and plant uptake of heavy metals present in wastewater irrigation systems. Radish (Raphanus sativus) was grown in pots under controlled environment, irrigated with synthesized wastewater containing various heavy metals, with and without silver nanoparticles. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the high-volume production nanoparticles (NPs) currently used in a wide range of consumer and industrial goods. The inevitable seepage into environmental matrices and the photoactive nature of ZnO NPs warrants hazard profiling under environmentally related conditions. In this paper, the influence of simulated solar light (SSL) on dissolution behaviour and phototoxicity of ZnO NPs was studied using a combinatorial library of ZnO NPs with different sizes, surface coatings, dopant chemistry, and aspect ratios in a fish cell line (BF2) and zebrafish embryos. Generally, the cytotoxicity and embryo mortality increased when exposed concomitantly to SSL and ZnO NPs. The increase in toxic potential of ZnO NPs during SSL exposure concurred with release of Zn ions and ROS generation. Surface modification of NPs with poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), silica or serum coating decreased toxicity and ZnO with serum coating was the only NP that had no significant effect on any of the cytotoxicity parameters when tested under both dark and SSL conditions. Results from our study show that exposure to light could increase the toxic potential of ZnO NPs to environmental lifeforms and mitigation of ZnO NP toxicity is possible through modifying the surface chemistry.

Plasmonic nanomaterials of gold and silver have been reported to have antibacterial effect. In this study, three gold nanomaterials (NMs) of different aspect rations (Gold nanospheres (AuNSs, aspect ratio 1), and two gold nanorods (AuNRs636, aspect ratio 2.79; AuNRs772, aspect ratio 3.42)) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized, characterized and the effect of incandescent light on their antibacterial properties were examined. Bacterial inactivation during photoinactivation of nanomaterials and antibacterial mechanisms (biotic ROS, membrane potential, membrane damage) were investigated using Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, and methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The results indicated that AuNSs had no antibacterial activity in the tested concentration (0.49-250 μg/mL), while AuNR636 and AuNRs772 showed significant bactericidal effect on all tested bacteria. Notably, AuNRs636 presented higher antibacterial effect than AuNRs772, which could result from higher surface reactivity of AuNRs636 owing to higher dangling bonds. Further studies showed that AuNRs but not AuNSs generated hydroxyl radicals (·OH) (photodynamic effect) and photothermal effect when exposed to incandescent light. The combined photodynamic and photothermal effect resulted in bacterial inactivation through cell membrane damage, lowering of cell membrane potential and DNA degradation. In summary, this investigation showed that Au NRs but not Au NSs exhibit photodynamic and photothermal effects suggesting the potential of fabricating material surfaces with Au NRs for photoactivated bacterial inactivation.

Silver (nAg) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) are common engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) added into paint for their antimicrobial and whitening properties, respectively. Weathering of outdoor painted surfaces can release such ENPs, though little is known about the potential effects of released ENPs on aquatic species. The objective of this study was to characterize the toxicity of nAg and nTiO2 released from painted panels using fish liver cells (CRL2643) and zebrafish embryos (OECD 236 embryotoxicity test). Cells and embryos were exposed to suspensions of pristine nAg or nTiO2, panels (unpainted or painted with nAg or nTiO2) or base paint, after sonication. Cell viability and gene expression were assessed using resazurin assay and qPCR, respectively, while embryo mortality and deformities were scored visually via microscopic examination. In the cell studies, both paint-released nanoparticles did not affect viability, but paint-released nAg resulted in differential expression of a few genes including gclc and ncf1. In embryos, paint-released nAg increased mortality and incidence of deformities, whereas paint-released nTiO2 resulted in differential expression of several genes including gclc, ncf1, txnrd1, gpx1b, and cyp1c1 but without major phenotypic abnormalities. Comparing the two types of exposures, paint-released exposures affected both molecular (gene expression) and apical (embryotoxicity) endpoints, while pristine exposures affected the expression of some genes but had no apical effects. The differing effects of paint-released and pristine nanoparticle exposures suggest that further research is needed to further understand how paint coatings (and the products of their weathering and aging) may influence nanoparticle toxicity to aquatic organisms.

BackgroundCOVID-19 curve can be flattened by adopting mass screening protocols with aggressive testing and isolating infected populations. The current approach largely depends on RT-PCR/rapid antigen tests that require expert personnel resulting in higher costs and reduced testing frequency. Loss of smell is reported as a major symptom of COVID-19, however, a precise olfactory testing tool to identify COVID-19 patient is still lacking.MethodsTo quantitatively check for the loss of smell, we developed an odor strip, “COVID-Anosmia checker”, spotted with gradients of coffee and lemon grass oil. We validated its efficiency in healthy and COVID-19 positive subjects. A trial screening to identify SARS-CoV-2 infected persons was also carried out to check the sensitivity and specificity of our screening tool.FindingsIt was observed that COVID positive participants were hyposmic instead of being anosmic when they were subjected to smelling higher odor concentration. Our tool identified 97% of symptomatic and 94% of asymptomatic COVID-19 positive subjects after excluding most confounding factors like concurrent chronic sinusitis. Further, it was possible to reliably predict COVID-19 infection by calculating a loss of smell score with 100% specificity. We coupled this tool with a mobile application, which takes the input response from the user, and can readily categorize the user in the appropriate risk groups.ConclusionLoss of smell can be used as a reliable marker for screening for COVID-19. Our tool can be used for first-line screening to trace out COVID-19 infection effectively. It can be used in difficult to reach geographical locations.

While inorganic nanomaterials are copiously incorporated in food products, their impact on the allergenicity food proteins is largely unknown. This study analyzed the effect of widely used food additive nanomaterials (silica and titania) on the antigenicity and allergenicity of milk proteins (β-lactoglobulin and casein) and skimmed milk. Changes in the antigenicity of milk proteins in the presence of dietary nanomaterials were identified using an indirect-ELISA assay, while the change in allergenicity was studied using mast cell (LAD2) sensitized using allergic human sera. Results showed an enhancement in the allergenicity of milk proteins/skimmed milk interacted with particles (both silica and titania). Similarly, mast cell degranulation (a proxy for allergenicity) was higher when exposed to particle interacted skim milk where nanomaterials of titania showed the highest effect, and this tendency was retained even after subjecting to simulated gut digestion. Particles induced alterations in the structure of milk proteins, as evidenced by our studies, are reasoned to expose epitopes that increase allergenicity of milk proteins.

Background Consumption of protein-based food products has a key role in the improvement of human health. The crosslinking agent microbial transglutaminase (mTGase) is an effective and promising tool to modify animal proteins used in the food industry. Improvement in the gelation process, physicochemical and textural quality, and consumer's demand of protein-based food products could be attained by combining mTGase and some non-conventional food processing technologies. Scope and approach New perspectives and key areas for future research in the development of high-quality food proteins and protein-based products as a function of interaction effect of mTGase and some new processing techniques (e.g. high pressure processing (HPP), ultrasound, microwave (MW) and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation) are reviewed. The effect of conventional thermal and emerging processing methods on the mTGase crosslinking activity and protein gel functionality are also compared. Key findings and conclusions The crosslinking density and functional properties of protein gels can be strongly promoted by the synergistic action of mTGase and innovative processing methods. Compared to the conventional heating, HPP with further increase of mTGase affinity to proteins can result in products with better physicochemical quality and more complex and firmer gel structure. The yield, water holding capacity, surface hydrophobicity, strength, and viscoelastic characteristics of mTGase-catalyzed protein gels can be significantly increased by ultrasonication treatments. mTGase-crosslinked hydrogels subjected to high-intensity ultrasonic pretreatment have potential to be used as delivery vehicles for a wide spectrum of bioactive compounds. The application of MW and UV light can substantially improve the surface, textural and structural features of gels generated by mTGase-technology.

Microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) has been currently utilized to form new food structures and matrices with high physicochemical stability. Incorporation of this multi-functional enzyme into structural composition of milk protein-based products, such as cheese and ice cream, can not only be a successful strategy to improve their nutritional and technological characteristics through intramolecular cross-linking, but also to reduce the production cost by decreasing fat and stabilizer contents. The recent research developments and promising results of MTGase application in producing functional formulations of cheese and ice cream with higher quality characteristics are reviewed. New interesting insights and future perspectives are also presented. The addition of MTGase to cheese led to significant improvements in moisture, yield, texture, rheology and sensory properties, without changes in the chemical composition. Furthermore, pH value of ice cream is not affected by the MTGase treatment. Compared to untreated ice creams, application of MTGase significantly promotes consistency, fat destabilization, overrun and organoleptic acceptance, while a substantial reduction in firmness and melting rate of samples was observed. The addition of MTGase to cheese and ice cream-milk provides reinforcement to the protein matrix and can be considered as a novel additive for improving the physicochemical and organoleptic properties of final products.

Preparing stable protein-based microcapsules containing functional fatty acids and oils for food applications has been a big challenge. However, recent advances with transglutaminase (TGase) enzyme as an effective protein cross-linker could provide workable solutions for the encapsulation of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids without compromising their targeted release and their biological and physicochemical characteristics. The recent and available literature related to the microencapsulation techniques, physical and oxidative properties, and core retention and release mechanisms of TGase-crosslinked microcapsules entrapping edible oils were reviewed. The effects of factors involved in microencapsulation processes, on the efficiency and quality of the produced innovative microcapsules were also discussed and highlighted. A brief focus has been finally addressed to new insights and additional knowledge on micro- and nanoencapsulation of lipophilic food-grade ingredients by TGase-induced gelation. Silver nanoparticle formation was studied with a library of capping agents (branched polyethylenimine [BPEI] of molecular weight [Mw] 10,000 and 25,000, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyethylene glycol, polyvinylalcohol and citrate) mixed with silver nitrate. The mixture was then exposed to an assortment of light wavelengths (ultraviolet, infrared and simulated solar light) for studying the light-assisted synthesis of nanoparticles. The formation of nanoparticles corresponded with the reducing capabilities of the polymers wherein BPEI gave the best response. Notably, the irradiation wavelengths had little effect on the formation of the nanoparticle when the total irradiation energy was kept constant. The feasibility of utilizing this method for in situ nanoparticle synthesis on textile fabrics (towel [100% cotton], gauze [100% cotton], rayon, felt [100% polyester] and microfiber [15% nylon, 85% polyester]) was verified by exposing the fabrics soaked in an aqueous solution of 1% (w/v) AgNO3 and 1% (w/v) BPEI (Mw 25,000) to light. The formation of nanoparticles on fabrics and their retention after washing was verified using scanning electron microscopy and quantified by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The functional property of the fabric as an antibacterial surface was successfully demonstrated using model bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli. The successful generation of silver nanoparticle-functionalized textile fabrics without the use of caustic chemicals, solvents and excessive heating presents a major step towards realizing a scalable green chemistry for industrial generation of functionalized fabrics for a wide range of applications. To understand the combinatorial toxicity of mycotoxins, we measured the effects of individual, binary and tertiary combinations of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), Deoxynivalenol (DON) and Zearalenone (ZEN) on the cell viability and cellular perturbations of HepG2 and RAW 264.7 cells. The nature of mycotoxins interactions was assessed using mathematical modeling (Chou-Talalay). Mechanisms of cytotoxicity were studied using high content screening (HCS) that probed cytotoxicity responses, such as changes in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) flux, and cell membrane damage. Our results showed that individual cytotoxicity of mycotoxins in a decreasing order was DON>AFB1>ZEN. Varying combinations of mycotoxins at differing concentrations showed different types of interactions. Most of the mixtures showed increasing toxic effects-synergism and/or addition while antagonistic effects were observed with combination of AFB1+ZEN. Generally, combination of mycotoxins showed significantly increased intracellular ROS production and [Ca2+]i flux, and decreased MMP in both cell lines, showing that the synergistic and additive effects of mycotoxin combination originate from perturbations of multiple cellular functions. Additionally, this study demonstrated the applicability of HCS for gaining mechanistic understanding on the toxicity of individual as well as combinatorial mycotoxins, and also provided scientific bases for formulating regulatory policies.

All electronic components and circuitry generate heat when current is passed through them due to its resistance. Reliable open-source solvers for obtaining the heat dissipation rate are of great importance to the industrial sector. The failure rate of the electronic components can increase exponentially with temperature. Without proper design and control, high rate of heat generation results in high operating temperature of electronic equipment, which reduces their safety and reliability. Therefore, before manufacturing of equipment, proper study in the heat generation should be conducted, and the type of cooling system shall be selected appropriately. This work studies the heat dissipation of built-up heat in electronic components. The open-source CFD package OpenFOAM is used to develop a numerical model of an electronic component placed in a closed enclosure. An experimental apparatus is used to validate the results obtained from CFD analysis. The validated CFD model can then be used to simulate heat dissipation from any component within the range of velocities for which the test is conducted.

Directed credit program is justified based on the failure of the market forces in efficient allocation of credit and the resultant social cost involved in such misallocations. It was initiated in India with the purpose of directing credit to certain underprivileged sectors and sections of the society in terms of credit distribution by the later part of 1960s. In the present scenario, there is a growing concern from different quarters regarding the continuation of the program on the ground of increasing non-performing assets of banking sector from priority sector lending. Moreover, the post economic reform period in India has experienced a fall in the share of the priority sector advances to total advances and diversion of funds to profitable areas and sectors. Considering the wide disparity existing in India, these developments can lead the regions, states, economic sectors or sections of population far behind in the development path and widen the disparity within those dimensions. In this background, this study examined specifically three issues – the level of concentration; inter regional and state-wise differences; the impact on sectoral performance – in the distribution of priority sector advances over the period from 2000 to 2013. We find significant differences; in distribution; in the impact of the loans upon sectoral performances; and in concentration of the funds flow, across sub sectors, regions and states in the priority sector lending activities of scheduled commercial banks over the study period. These evidences call for setting up of location specific targets and modified clustered approaches instead of the existing classifications in the lending program in India.

Severe haze episodes originating from biomass burning are common in Southeast Asia. However, there is a paucity of data on the personal exposure and characteristics of Particulate Matter (PM) present in ambient air during haze and non-haze periods. Aims of this study were to monitor 24 h ambulatory exposure to PM among school children in Singapore; characterize haze and non-haze PM for their physicochemical properties, cytotoxicity and inflammatory potential, using bronchial epithelial cell culture model (BEAS-2B). Forty-six children had ambulatory PM exposure monitored using portable Aethalometer and their hourly activity recorded. The mean (±SE) PM exposure on a typical school day was 3343 (±174.4) ng/m3/min. Higher PM exposure was observed during haze periods and during commuting to and from the school. Characterization of PM collected showed a drastic increase in the proportion of ultrafine particle (UFP) in haze PM. These PM fraction showed higher level of sulphur, potassium and trace metals in comparison to those collected during non-haze periods. Dose dependent increases in abiotic reactive oxygen species generation, activation of NF-κB and cytotoxicity were observed for both haze and non-haze PM. Generally, haze PM induced significantly higher release of IL-6, IL-8 and TNFα by BEAS-2B cells in comparison to non-haze PM. In summary, this study provides experimental evidence for higher PM exposure during haze period which has the potential to elicit oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokine release from airway epithelial cells.

Recently there has been an influx of silver infused food packaging materials that claim to enhance the shelf-life of stored food. We tested commercially available normal plastic packing material (S1) and two packing materials (S2 and S3) which claimed to contain silver to enhance shelf-life of stored food for the presence of silver and its antibacterial performance. Microwave assisted acid digestion of the plastic material and ICP-OES analysis confirmed the presence of silver in S2 (103 μg/g) and S3 (74 μg/g) but not in S1. Migration studies showed that 12–14% of silver incorporated into the plastic could leach into milk (used as a food simulant). Shelf-life studies conducted using milk showed that in comparison to normal plastic materials (S1), those containing silver (S2 and S3) had no functional advantage but slightly enhanced the microbial growth. Further studies showed that sub-lethal concentration of silver generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) within bacterial cells (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923) accompanied by increased cell proliferation and biofilm formation suggestive of a hormetic effect. In short, these studies showed that the incorporation of silver at low concentration in packaging materials may not provide a functional advantage, but mitigate the migration of silver into the stored food products at sub-lethal concentration and may induce bacterial hormesis and accelerate food spoilage.

While nanoparticles (NPs) are copiously incorporated into different food products, the protein corona profile of saliva interacted dietary NPs and its potential influence on the function of proteins involved have received little attention. In this study the most widely used NPs such as food grade silicon dioxide (SiO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and emerging NP with application in food industry- silver (Ag) were interacted with human saliva. These particles were characterized for their physicochemical properties in their pristine state and after interacting with saliva. Analysis of the protein corona composition of saliva interacted dietary particles was carried by 1D gel electrophoresis and LC-MS/MS. We observed a net decrease in the negative surface charge and change in agglomeration size in saliva interacted NPs. Significant differences in corona composition, and protein abundance were noted among the tested particles. Several proteins with vital functions in digestion and host protections were found to be enriched on the surface of particles. In order to verify if the binding of proteins have any effect on their function, we tested the amylase and lysozyme activities of saliva in the presence and absence of NPs of SiO2 and TiO2. Our results showed that these particles could compromise the enzymes function wherein NPs of SiO2 showed the highest effect. Overall, our study, identified human salivary proteins involved in the protein corona of dietary particles and showed that vital functions of saliva such as digestion and antimicrobial activities could be partially affected by protein-nanoparticle interactions in saliva.

A point-of-use household water treatment technology, the biosand filter (BSF), has been widely adopted across over 180 countries (CAWST, 2020). However, it has a poor Escherichia coli (E. coli) removal efficiency during the first few weeks of its use. This study investigated the potential of biochar on E. coli removal in a laboratory-modified biosand filtering system. Two biochars, produced from wheat straw and willow wood feedstocks, were used and their effects were compared. Only the coarser fraction of both biochars (1–4 mm) was used in order to minimize its impact on the filtration rate. It was observed that the filter amended with wheat straw biochar exhibited a higher mean E. coli removal rate (84%) than the filter amended with willow wood biochar (79%); however, both biochar-amended filters had lower mean E. coli removal rates than the sand-only control filter (88%), over a 5-week filtration experiment. The E. coli adsorption of biochar and sand were examined at the end of the filtration experiment. Both biochars were shown to have a larger total amount of E. coli adsorption (7.4 log10) than sand (6.8 log10). The two biochars showed comparable E. coli adsorption capacities of 5.7 log10 CFU/g, although their specific surface areas varied greatly (55.24 m2/g for wheat straw biochar and 380.00 m2/g for willow wood biochar). The study is carried out in the Indian equity market based on the data drawn from both BSE and NSE for a period spanning from 2004–2016 to examine the trading behaviour of investor categories and its association with major indices in Indian equity market. Three common characteristics in the trading behaviour of FIIs, banks, NRIs, proprietary traders, insurance companies, and DIIs (including bank and insurance) were analysed based on principal component analysis. The study observed disconnection of trading activity by investor categories with the performance of the economy. Further, it is also observed that the characteristic that is heavily influenced positively by the commonality in client trading, FIIs, banks, insurance and DIIs and negatively influenced by proprietary trading was found to be significantly associated with irrational sentiment in the market. The component which is significantly positively related to the irrational sentiment in the market and negatively associated with economic indicators though not significant showed a negative association with all the major indices in the market. It is concluded from the analysis that FIIs, DIIs and client trading activities are much similar to those of noise traders in the market, but following contrarian trading strategies while proprietary trading taking opposite position in the market by trading against these groups indirectly increase the errors in the market in the guise of market making. Insurance companies are the group which trade in line with economic fundamentals and positively influence the movements in Indian equity market.

As process technology further scales, aging, noise and variations in integrated circuits (ICs) and systems become a major challenge to both the semiconductor and electronic design automation (EDA) industries, which may cause significantly increased mismatch between modeled and actual silicon behavior, and even IC failure in field. Therefore, the addition of accurate and low-cost on-chip sensors is of great value to reduce the mismatch and perform in-field measurements. This paper presents a novel standard-cell-based sensor for reliability analysis of digital ICs (called Radic), in order to better understand the characteristics of gate, functional path aging and process variations' impact on timing performance, and perform in-field aging measurements. The Radic sensor has been fabricated on two floating gate Freescale SoCs in very advanced technology. The measurement results demonstrate that the resolution can be better than 0.1 ps, and the accuracy is kept throughout aging/process variation. Additionally, a built-in aging adaption system based on Radic sensor is proposed to perform in-field aging adaption. Simulation results verify that, comparing with designs with fixed aging guardband, the proposed aging adaption system releases 80% of aging timing margin, saves silicon area by 1.02%-3.16% at most targeting frequencies, and prevents aging induced failure.

Preparing stable protein-based microcapsules containing functional fatty acids and oils for food applications has been a big challenge. However, recent advances with transglutaminase (TGase) enzyme as an effective protein cross-linker could provide workable solutions for the encapsulation of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids without compromising their targeted release and their biological and physicochemical characteristics. The recent and available literature related to the microencapsulation techniques, physical and oxidative properties, and core retention and release mechanisms of TGase-crosslinked microcapsules entrapping edible oils were reviewed. The effects of factors involved in microencapsulation processes, on the efficiency and quality of the produced innovative microcapsules were also discussed and highlighted. A brief focus has been finally addressed to new insights and additional knowledge on micro- and nanoencapsulation of lipophilic food-grade ingredients by TGase-induced gelation. Two dominant microencapsulation methods for fish, vegetable, and essential oils by TGase-crosslinking are complex coacervation and emulsion-based spray drying. The developed spherical particles (100 μm) with some wrinkles and smooth surfaces showed an excellent encapsulation efficiency and yield. A negligible release rate and a substantial retention level can result for different lipid-based cores covered by TGase-crosslinked proteins during the oral digestion and storage. A significant structural, thermal and oxidative stability for edible oils-loaded microcapsules in the presence of TGase can be also obtained.
