8. High resolution spectroscopy of the three dimensional cosmic web with close QSO groups

Abstract

We study the three-dimensional distribution of matter at z~2 using high resolution spectra of QSO pairs and simulated spectra drawn from cosmological hydro-dynamical simulations. We present a sample of 15 QSOs, corresponding to 21 baselines of angular separations evenly distributed between ~1 and 14 arcmin, observed with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the European Southern Observatory-Very Large Telescope (ESO-VLT). The observed correlation functions of the transmitted flux in the HI Lya forest transverse to and along the line of sight are in agreement, implying that the distortions in redshift space due to peculiar velocities are relatively small and - within the relatively large error bars - not significant. The clustering signal is significant up to velocity separations of ~300 km/s, corresponding to about 5 h^{-1} comoving Mpc. Compatibility at the 2 sigma level has been found both for the Auto- and Cross-correlation functions and for the set of the Cross correlation coefficients. The analysis focuses in particular on two QSO groups of the sample. Searching for alignments in the redshift space between Lya absorption lines belonging to different lines of sight, it has been possible to discover the presence of a wide HI structures extending over about ten Mpc in comoving space, and give constraints on the sizes of two cosmic under-dense regions in the intergalactic medium., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, version matching the published one

9. The QSO proximity effect at redshift <z>=2.6 with the FLO approach

Abstract

We revisit the proximity effect produced by QSOs at redshifts 2.1-3.3 applying the FLO approach (Saitta et al. 2008) to a sample of ~6300 Ly-alpha lines fitted in 21 high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra. This new technique allows to recover the hydrogen density field from the HI column densities of the lines in the Ly-alpha forest, on the basis of simple assumptions on the physical state of the gas. To minimize the systematic uncertainties that could affect the density recovering in the QSO vicinity, we carefully determined the redshifts of the QSOs in our sample and modelled in detail their spectra to compute the corresponding ionising fluxes. The mean density field obtained from the observed spectra shows a significant over-density in the region within 4 proper Mpc from the QSO position, confirming that QSOs are hosted in high density peaks. The absolute value of rho/ for the peak is uncertain by a factor of ~3, depending on the assumed QSO spectral slope and the minimum HI column density detectable in the spectra. We do not confirm the presence of a significant over-density extending to separations of ~15 proper Mpc from the QSO, claimed in previous works at redshifts =2.5 and 3.8. Our best guess for the UV background ionisation rate based on the IGM mean density recovered by FLO is Gamma_UVB ~ 10^{-12} s^{-1}. However, values of Gamma_UVB ~ 3x10^{-12} s^{-1} could be viable if an inverted temperature-density relation with index alpha=-0.5 is adopted., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

[Abridged] We present FLO (From Lines to Over-densities), a new technique to reconstruct the hydrogen density field for the Lya forest lines observed in high resolution QSO spectra. The method is based on the hypothesis that the Lya lines arise in the low to intermediate density intergalactic gas and that the Jeans length is the typical size of the Lya absorbers. The reliability of FLO is tested against mock spectra obtained from cosmological simulations. The recovering algorithm gives satisfactory results in the range from the mean density to over-densities of ~30 and reproduces correctly the correlation function of the density field and the 1D power spectrum on scales between ~20 and 60 comoving Mpc. A sample of Lya forests from 22 high resolution QSO spectra is analysed, covering the redshift range 1.7

Abstract

We study the three-dimensional distribution of non virialised matter at z~2 using high resolution spectra of QSO pairs and simulated spectra drawn from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We have collected the largest sample of QSO pairs ever observed with UVES at the ESO-VLT, with angular separations between ~1 and 14 arcmin. The observed correlation functions of the transmitted flux in the HI Lyman alpha forest along and transverse to the lines of sight are in good agreement implying that the distortions in redshift space due to peculiar velocities are small. The clustering signal is significant up to velocity separations of ~200 km/s, or about 3 h^{-1} comoving Mpc. The regions at lower overdensity (rho/ < 6.5) are still clustered but on smaller scales (Delta v < 100 km/s). The observed and simulated correlation functions are compatible at the 3 sigma level. A better concordance is obtained when only the low overdensity regions are selected for the analysis or when the effective optical depth of the simulated spectra is increased artificially, suggesting a deficiency of strong lines in the simulated spectra. We found that also a lower value of the power-law index of the temperature-density relation for the Lyman alpha forest gas improves the agreement between observed and simulated results. If confirmed, this would be consistent with other observations favouring a late HeII reionization epoch (at z~3). We remark the detection of a significant clustering signal in the cross correlation coefficient at a transverse velocity separation Delta v_{\perp} ~500 km/s whose origin needs further investigation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, revised version matching the accepted one

We investigate the 3-D matter distribution at z~2 with high resolution (R ~ 40000) spectra of QSO pairs and groups obtained with the UVES spectrograph at ESO VLT. Our sample is unique for the number density of objects and the variety of separations, between 0.5 and 7 proper Mpc. We compute the real space cross-correlation function of the Lyman-alpha forest transmitted fluxes. Abstract

The great diffusion of masonry arch bridges, sometimes of historical interest, requires the development of simple but effective methodologies for a preliminary but reliable evaluation of their static and seismic capacity. In this paper, the behaviour under longitudinal seismic actions is analysed by using the mechanism method. The masonry is supposed to have no tension strength but a rigid–perfect plastic behaviour with finite strength in compression. The arch is subject to permanent loads and to a horizontal acceleration acting in the longitudinal direction, which causes a horizontal inertial loading acting on the arch. Three hypotheses about the effects of the inertial actions of the backfill are considered, which correspond to three different real behaviours. A comprehensive numerical investigation is performed, which allows us to point out the influence of the geometrical and mechanical parameters on the seismic capacity of a masonry arch bridge. The results are given by means of diagrams that can be easily used for a preliminary seismic check of a masonry arch bridge.

21. Dynamic Identification of the So-Called Temple of Minerva Medica: Comparison of Different Instrumentations and Methods for Mutual Validation of the Results

Abstract

Dynamic monitoring is a well-established technique used to gain information on the global health of constructions. In particular, ambient vibration tests have achieved important results in the dynamic characterization of modal parameters. Several techniques and instrumentations are currently available, however the accuracy of these results is often unquestioned. The mutual validation between different modal analysis techniques is an important procedure to assess the reliability of the results. In the present paper the ambient vibration tests performed on the so-called ‘Temple of Minerva Medica’ in Rome considering different techniques and instrumentations will be described and compared. While it is referred to as the Temple of Minerva Medica, the structure is actually a ruined decagonal nymphaeum in opus latericium that dates to the 4th century AD. Today, the construction is located between the main central train station (Roma Termini) and the local tram way. Ambient vibration data were acquired during different campaigns [1] to characterize the effects of the vibrations and the modal parameters of the structure. This work deals with the data collected on the 11th of July 2019 within the project “Tecnologie per il miglioramento della Sicurezza e la ricostruzione dei centri Storici in area sismica” coordinated by DTC Lazio (Distretto Tecnologico beni e attività culturali). The instrumentation comprised of several seismographs equipped with triaxial velocimeters and piezoelectric accelerometers. A variety of techniques were applied to process the acquired vibration data in order to extract the modal parameters of the studied structure including PolyMAX, FDD, EFDD, CC-SSI, HVSR and FRF. Comparison of the modal parameters obtained by each different technique was considered to provide indications on the reliability of the instruments.

These biomimetic nano-entities have been very useful in the clinical practice as drug delivery systems in their conventional form, comprising lipids as structural components. However, the scientific efforts have recently shifted towards the development of more sophisticated nanotechnological platforms, which apply functional biomaterials, such as stimuli-responsive polymers, in order to aid the drug molecule targeting concept. These nanosystems are defined as chimeric/mixed, because they combine more than one different in nature biomaterials and their development requires intensive study through biophysical and thermodynamic approaches before they may reach in vivo application. Herein, we designed and developed chimeric liposomes, composed of a phospholipid and pH-responsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers and studied their morphology and behavior based on crucial formulation parameters, including biomaterial concentration, dispersion medium pH and polymer composition. Additionally, their interactions with biological components, pH-responsiveness and membrane thermodynamics were assessed. Finally, preliminary in vivo toxicity experiments of the developed nanosystems were carried out, in order to establish a future protocol for full in vivo evaluation. The results have been correlated with the properties of the chimeric nanosystems and highlight the importance of such approaches for designing and developing effective nanocarriers for biomedical applications. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

The effects of the ambient vibrations on the Colosseum, obtained during the experimental campaign carried out in June 2014 are reported in this paper. Data, which regard the basement and the external northern wall, were analyzed in both time and frequency domain. The vibration amplitudes at different locations were pointed out as well as the dynamic characteristics of the wall. The results obtained are the starting point for future extensive experimental measurements and monitoring. Abstract

Palazzo Torlonia in Avezzano (Italy) is a two-story confined masonry building, constructed according to the code issued after the devastating 1915 earthquake. That code provided concrete confining members around masonry walls and openings. Walls are made of clay bricks with gothic texture, whereas floor slabs are based on mixed concrete and hollow clay blocks. This paper reports the analysis and results of the experimental dynamic tests on the structure, did in year 2016, by means of 24 seismometers, placed at all floors on the structure in three different configurations. Ambient vibration was the excitation source. Data were analyzed in time and frequency. In the first case the planar bidirectional motion of some points on the building were observed for a long time, to obtain initial information regarding the prevalent directions of motion. Analysis in frequency was preliminarily pursued by means of Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) and subsequently by the evaluation of the auto and cross Power Spectral Densities (PSDs). They show an energy content in the range 3-20 Hz, with many close peaks. Although the results presented in this paper are not conclusive and data will be investigated in more detail, in general they show the deformability of the floors, which cannot be considered as infinitely rigid in their plane, as is often done in structural analysis of buildings. © 2017 International Conference on Advances in Experimental Structural Engineerin. Abstract

The Marcus Aurelius Column has been a historical seismometer in Rome since its construction. Most of the seismic events of the past had effects on it. Therefore, the preservation of this monument is of fundamental importance for at least two reasons. First of all, to extend as much as possible its life time, in order to allow enjoying the sight to future generations. Then, the knowledge of these column characteristics will allow to improve the interpretation of historical documents on seismic event in Rome and to continue using it as historical seismometer in the Eternal City. In this paper, the last experimental vibrational analysis carried out on the Column is shown. Twenty-four velocimeter sensors, connected to a single acquisition unit, were used.
