In this investigation, we synthesized monophasic and nanostructured (Zn
1-x-y Fex Coy )O samples, with x + y = 0.05. These nanophases were characterized by X-ray diffraction, magnetization techniques, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The analyzes revealed that doping ZnO with iron or cobalt induced a morphological change for the crystallites. The presence of cobalt in the matrix showed to enhance clustering of iron atoms and two different groups of ferric cations were identifyed diluted in the wurtzite matrix. (Zn1-x-y Fex Coy )O has no magnetic order at RT but makes a transition from the paramagnetic to the spin-glass state with decreasing temperature, passing through three different magnetic regimes. The unit cell volume, remanence and coercive field of the (Zn1-x-y Fex Coy )O solid system reached a maximum for co-doped samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In this work we present a systematic study of the physical properties (magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity) and the determination of magnetic structures of a new series of isostructural tetragonal compounds RmMnIn3m+2n(R = Gd, Tb, Sm; M = Rh, Ir; m = 1,2; n = 0,1) exploring their relationships with the interesting physical properties found in other compounds of this family, specially when R = Ce compounds, for whose a heavy fermion behavior with unconventional superconductivity (USC) has been reported. The magnetic structures have been determined using high quality single crystalline samples of Gd2IrIn8, GdRhIn5, GdIn3, TbRhIn5, Tb2RhIn8 and Sm2IrIn8 through the resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (RXMS) technique. Our results show that all these systems order antiferromagnetically in commensurate structures below the ordering temperature (TN) with propagation vectors (1/2,0,0),(0,1/2,1/2),(1/2,1/2,0),(1/2,0,1/2),(1/2,1/2,1/2) and (1/2,0,0), respectively. The magnetic moments of rare earth ions are oriented in the tetragonal ab-plane for R = Gd and Sm2IrIn8 compounds, while for the TbRhIn5 they order along the c-axis direction. The tetragonal Tb-based compounds were synthesized and characterized for the first time during this work. In these cases TN is increased when compared to the TN of the cubic TbIn3 (Tb1-0-3, TN¿32 K), as has been found for tetragonal Nd-based compounds. Regarding the magnetic moment directions in the ordered phase and the TN evolution along the series our results agree with those obtained from a mean field theoretical model, developed by collaborators, which considers an isotropic first-neighbors Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction and tetragonal crystal field effects (CEF) applied to Ce-, Nd- and Tb-based compounds. We can conclude from our results that the CEF effects are responsible in determining the magnetic moment directions for different R ions and varying the tetragonal CEF parameters we can also determine the TN evolution along the series. According to this idea, for Gd-based compounds, where the orbital angular momentum L = 0 and CEF effects are not important, TN is approximately the same for the tetragonal compounds when compared with cubic GdIn3. For those cases with ordered moments along any in-plane direction (R = Ce and Sm) TN decreases while it is increased when the moments orientation take place along the c-axis. The CEF effects-driven mechanism to determine the behavior of magnetic moment directions and TN, well explained by the mean field model, could be extrapolated to Ce-based compounds where combined with hybridization and Kondo effects, whose are very important, may create strong in-plane magnetic uctuations that can mediate the quasi-2D unconventional superconductivity in these systems Doutorado Física da Matéria Condensada Doutor em Ciências

Abstract: We report the temperature dependence of susceptibility for various pressures, magnetic fields and constant magnetic field of 5T with various pressures on La2−2x Sr1+2x Mn2O7 single crystal to understand the effectiveness of pressure and magnetic field in altering the magnetic properties. We find that the Curie temperature, T c, increases under pressure (dT c/dP=10.9K/GPa) and it indicates the enhancement of ferromagnetic phase under pressure up to 2GPa. The magnetic field dependence of T c is about 26K for 3T. The combined effect of pressure and constant magnetic field (5T) shows dT c/dP=11.3K/GPa and the peak structure is suppressed and broadened. The application of magnetic field of 5T realizes 3D spin ordered state below T c at atmospheric pressure. Both peak structure in χ c and 3D spin ordered state are suppressed, and changes to 2D-like spin ordered state by increase of pressure. These results reveal that the pressure and the magnetic field are more competitive in altering the magnetic properties of bilayer manganite La1.25Sr1.75Mn2O7 single crystal. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Foram determinados valores de magnetização de saturação entre 2 e 68 emu/g e coercividade de até 140 Oe, sendo tal valor de coercividade duas ordens de grandeza maior do que aquele apresentado pela ferrita NiZn, em volume Abstract: Non-conventional routes for the controlled synthesis of nanoraetric particles of stoichiometric NiZn-ferrite (Ni> sZnp 5Fe204), pure and embedded in silica-matrix (Nio 5ZN0 5Fe204)x (Si02)i* have been investigated, and X-ray diffraction, S7Fe Mdssbauer spectroscopy, EXAFS and vibrating sample magnetometry were applied to study the correlation between the structural and magnetic properties of the obtained nanostructured materials. Ultrafine, highly homogeneous NiZn-ferrite powders have been prepared by metallic nitrates coprecipitation, promoted by NaOH and followed by annealing at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1300° C. The obtained samples presented average particles diameter between 5 and 150 nm. EXAFS was mainly applied in the samples after the different heat treatments to follow the crystallinity of NiZn-ferrite. Results obtained from the Ni, Zn and Fe K-edge absorption spectra show that NiZn-ferrite has a well ordered structure after annealing starting from 400° C. Mfissbauer results revealed superparamagnetic behaviour of nanostructured ferrite and allowed the determination of the hyperfrne parameters, at room temperature and 100K, for the different average particles diameter. Our samples have show saturation magnetization ranging from 13 to 80 emu/g and maximal coercivity of 87 Oe for an average diameter near 40 run, suggesting a transition from monodomain to multidomain behaviour close to these particles size. Nanosctructured granular Nio.sZNo 5Fe2CV SiO? composite with ferrite nominal volumetric fraction and average particles diameter ranging from 6 to 78% and 6 to 92 nm, respectively, have been prepared by sol-gel processing, starting from metallic nitrates and TEOS, followed by annealing between 800 and 1100° C. Small amounts of Fe203 were also observed starting from 41% NiZn-ferrite. Mossbauer results show the superparamagnetic behaviour of the ferrimagnetic ferrite nanoparticles in silica and the hyperfrne parameters were found to be very close to that obtained for pure NiZn-ferrite. The composite samples presented saturation magnetization between 2 and 68 emu/g and coercivity as high as 140 Oe, two orders of magnitude higher than the bulk value Doutorado Ciência e Tecnologia de Materiais Doutor em Engenharia Química
