Search

Star clusters form via clustering star formation inside molecular clouds. In order to understand the dynamical evolution of star clusters in their early phase, in which star clusters are still embedded in their surrounding gas, we need an accurate integration of individual stellar orbits without gravitational softening in the systems including both gas and stars, as well as modeling individual stars with a realistic mass function. We develop a new tree-direct hybrid smoothed particle hydrodynamics/N-body code, ASURA+BRIDGE, in which stars are integrated using a direct N-body scheme or PeTar, a particle-particle particle-tree scheme code, without gravitational softening. In ASURA+BRIDGE, stars are assumed to have masses randomly drawn from a given initial mass function. With this code, we perform star-cluster formation simulations starting from molecular clouds without gravitational softening. We find that artificial dense cores in star-cluster centers due to the softening disappear when we do not use softening. We further demonstrate that star clusters are built up via mergers of smaller clumps. Star clusters formed in our simulations include some dynamically formed binaries with the minimum semi-major axes of a few au, and the binary fraction is higher for more massive stars., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

In a conventional framework, superconductivity is lost at a critical temperature (T_c) because, at higher temperatures, gluing bosons can no longer bind two electrons into a Cooper pair. In high-T_c cuprates, it is still unknown how superconductivity vanishes at T_c. We provide evidence that the so-called <~70-meV kink bosons that dress the quasi-particle excitations are playing a key role in the loss of superconductivity in a cuprate. We irradiated a 170-fs laser pulse on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+\delta and monitored the responses of the superconducting gap and dressed quasi-particles by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe an ultrafast loss of superconducting gap near the d-wave node, or light-induced Fermi arcs, which is accompanied by spectral broadenings and weight redistributions occurring within the kink binding energy. We discuss that the underlying mechanism of the spectral broadening that induce the Fermi arc is the undressing of quasi-particles from the kink bosons. The loss mechanism is beyond the conventional framework, and can accept the unconventional phenomena such as the signatures of Cooper pairs remaining at temperatures above T_c.

A detailed low-energy electronic structure of a Kondo insulator YbB$_{12}$ was revealed by a synergetic combination of ultrahigh-resolution laser photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and time-resolved PES. The former confirmed a 25-meV pseudogap corresponding to the Kondo temperature of this material, and more importantly, it revealed that a 15-meV gap and a Kondo-peak feature developed below a crossover temperature $T^\ast \sim 110$ K. In harmony with this, the latter discovered a very long recombination time exceeding 100 ps below $\sim$$T^\ast$. This is a clear manifestation of photoexcited carriers due to the bottleneck in the recovery dynamics, which is interpreted as a developing hybridization gap of a hard gap., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, revised version accepted for publication in PRB Rapid Communications

By using laboratory x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HX-PES) at a synchrotron facility, we report an empirical semi-quantitative relationship between the valence/core-level x-ray photoemission spectral weight and electrical conductivity in La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} as a function of x. In the Mn 2p_{3/2} HX-PES spectra, we observed the shoulder structure due to the Mn^{3+} well-screened state. However, the intensity at x=0.8 was too small to explain its higher electrical conductivity than x=0.0, which confirms our recent analysis on the Mn 2p_{3/2} XPS spectra. The near-Fermi level XPS spectral weight was found to be a measure of the variation of electrical conductivity with x in spite of a far lower energy resolution compared with the energy scale of the quasiparticle (coherent) peak because of the concurrent change of the coherent and incoherent spectral weight., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 supplemental material

Core-level electronic structure of La1-xSrxMnO3 has been studied by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). We first report, by the conventional XPS, the well-screened shoulder structure in Mn 2p3/2 peak, which had been observed only by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy so far. Multiple-peak analysis revealed that the Mn4+ spectral weight was not proportional to the nominal hole concentration x, indicating that a simple Mn3+/Mn4+ intensity ratio analysis may result in a wrong quantitative elemental analysis. Considerable weight of the shoulder at x=0.0 and the fact that the shoulder weight was even slightly going down from x=0.2 to 0.4 were not compatible with the idea that this weight simply represents the metallic behavior. Further analysis found that the whole Mn 2p3/2 peak can be decomposed into four portions, the Mn4+, the (nominal) Mn3+, the shoulder, and the other spectral weight located almost at the Mn3+ location. We concluded that this weight represents the well-screened final state at Mn4+ sites, whereas the shoulder is known as that of the Mn3+ states. We report the detailed electronic structure of a hole-doped delafossite oxide CuCr_{1-x}Mg_{x}O_{2} (0 <= x <= 0.03) studied by photoemission spectroscopy (PES), soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and band-structure calculations within the local-density approximation +U (LDA+U) scheme. Cr/Cu 3p-3d resonant PES reveals that the near-Fermi-level leading structure has primarily the Cr 3d character with a minor contribution from the Cu 3d through Cu 3d-O 2p-Cr 3d hybridization, having good agreement with the band-structure calculations. This indicates that a doped hole will have primarily the Cr 3d character. Cr 2p PES and L-edge XAS spectra exhibit typical Cr^{3+} features for all x, while the Cu L-edge XAS spectra exhibited a systematic change with x. This indicates now that the Cu valence is monovalent at x=0 and the doped hole should have Cu 3d character. Nevertheless, we surprisingly observed two types of charge-transfer satellites that should be attributed to Cu^{+} (3d^{10}) and Cu^{2+} (3d^{9}) like initial states in Cu 2p-3d resonant PES spectrum for at x=0, while Cu 2p PES spectra with no doubt shows the Cu^{+} character even for the lightly doped samples. We propose that these contradictory results can be understood by introducing no only the Cu 4s state, but also finite Cu 3d,4s-Cr 3d charge transfer via O 2p states in the ground-state electronic configuration., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, revised version accepted for publication in Phys. In order to test a recent hypothesis that the dispersion in the Schmidt-Kennicutt law arises from variations in the evolutionary stage of star forming molecular clouds, we compared molecular gas and recent star formation in an early-phase merger galaxy pair, Taffy I (UGC\ 12915/UGC\ 12914, VV\ 254) which went through a direct collision 20 Myr ago and whose star forming regions are expected to have similar ages. Narrow-band Pa-alpha image is obtained using the ANIR near-infrared camera on the mini-TAO 1m telescope. The image enables us to derive accurate star formation rates within the galaxy directly. The total star formation rate, 22.2 M_sun/yr, was found to be much higher than previous estimates. Ages of individual star forming blobs estimated from equivalent widths indicate that most star forming regions are ~7 Myr old, except for a giant HII region at the bridge which is much younger. Comparison between star formation rates and molecular gas masses for the regions with the same age exhibits a surprisingly tight correlation, a slope of unity, and star formation efficiencies comparable to those of starburst galaxies. These results suggest that Taffy I has just evolved into a starburst system after the collision, and the star forming sites are at a similar stage in their evolution from natal molecular clouds except for the bridge region. The tight Schmidt-Kennicutt law supports the scenario that dispersion in the star formation law is in large part due to differences in evolutionary stage of star forming regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trPES) can directly detect transient electronic structure, thus bringing out its promising potential to clarify nonequilibrium processes arising in condensed matters. Here we report the result of core-level (CL) trPES on 1T-TaS2, realized by developing a high-intensity 60 eV laser obtained by high-order harmonic (HH) generation. Ta4f CL-trPES offers the transient amplitude of the charge-density-wave (CDW), via the site-selective and real-time observation of Ta electrons. The present result indicates an ultrafast photoinduced melting and recovery of CDW amplitude, followed by a peculiar long-life oscillation (i.e. collective amplitudon excitation) accompanying the transfer of 0.01 electrons among adjacent Ta atoms. CL-trPES offers a broad range of opportunities for investigating the ultrafast atom-specific electron dynamics in photo-related phenomena of interest.

It has been believed that spirals in pure stellar disks, especially the ones spontaneously formed, decay in several galactic rotations due to the increase of stellar velocity dispersions. Therefore, some cooling mechanism, for example dissipational effects of the interstellar medium, was assumed to be necessary to keep the spiral arms. Here we show that stellar disks can maintain spiral features for several tens of rotations without the help of cooling, using a series of high-resolution three-dimensional $N$-body simulations of pure stellar disks. We found that if the number of particles is sufficiently large, e.g., $3\times 10^6$, multi-arm spirals developed in an isolated disk can survive for more than 10 Gyrs. We confirmed that there is a self-regulating mechanism that maintains the amplitude of the spiral arms. Spiral arms increase Toomre's $Q$ of the disk, and the heating rate correlates with the squared amplitude of the spirals. Since the amplitude itself is limited by the value of $Q$, this makes the dynamical heating less effective in the later phase of evolution. A simple analytical argument suggests that the heating is caused by gravitational scattering of stars by spiral arms, and that the self-regulating mechanism in pure-stellar disks can effectively maintain spiral arms on a cosmological timescale. In the case of a smaller number of particles, e.g., $3\times 10^5$, spiral arms grow faster in the beginning of the simulation (while $Q$ is small) and they cause a rapid increase of $Q$. Low energy electronic structure of optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-d is investigated using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The surface state and the CuO chain band that usually overlap the CuO2 plane derived bands are not detected, thus enabling a clear observation of the bulk superconducting state. The observed bilayer splitting of the Fermi surface is ~0.08 angstrom^{-1} along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) direction, significantly larger than Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The kink structure of the band dispersion reflecting the renormalization effect at ~60 meV shows up similarly as in other hole-doped cuprates. The momentum-dependence of the superconducting gap shows d_{x^2-y^2}-wave like amplitude, but exhibits a nonzero minimum of ~12 meV along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) direction. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy tunable photons along the nodal direction of oxygen isotope substituted Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta reveals a distinct oxygen isotope shift near the electron-boson coupling "kink" in the electronic dispersion. The magnitude (a few meV) and direction of the kink shift are as expected due to the measured isotopic shift of phonon frequency, which are also in agreement with theoretical expectations. This demonstrates the participation of the phonons as dominant players, as well as pinpointing the most relevant of the phonon branches., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present the electronic structure of Sr_{1-(x+y)}La_{x+y}Ti_{1-x}Cr_{x}O_{3} investigated by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. In the vicinity of Fermi level, it was found that the electronic structure were composed of a Cr 3d local state with the t_{2g}^{3} configuration and a Ti 3d itinerant state. The energy levels of these Cr and Ti 3d states are well interpreted by the difference of the charge-transfer energy of both ions. The spectral weight of the Cr 3d state is completely proportional to the spin concentration x irrespective of the carrier concentration y, indicating that the spin density can be controlled by x as desired. In contrast, the spectral weight of the Ti 3d state is not proportional to y, depending on the amount of Cr doping., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett

We present detailed energy dispersions near the Fermi level on the monolayer perovskite ruthenate Sr2RuO4, determined by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. An orbital selectivity of the kink in the dispersion of Sr2RuO4 has been found: A kink for the Ru 4d_xy orbital is clearly observed, but not for the Ru 4d_yz and 4d_zx ones. We have investigated the electronic structure of electron-doped Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$FeMoO$_6$ ($x$=0.0 and 0.2) by photoemission spectroscopy and band-structure calculations within the local-density approximation+$U$ (LDA+$U$) scheme. A characteristic double-peak feature near the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$) has been observed in the valence-band photoemission spectra of both $x$=0.0 and 0.2 samples. A photon-energy dependence of the spectra in the Mo 4$d$ Cooper minimum region compared with the band-structure calculations has shown that the first peak crossing $E_{\rm F}$ consists of the (Fe+Mo) $t_{2g\downarrow}$ states (feature A) and the second peak well below $E_{\rm F}$ is dominated by the Fe $e_{g\uparrow}$ states (feature B). Upon La substitution, the feature A moves away from $E_{\rm F}$ by $\sim$50 meV which is smaller than the prediction of our band theory, 112 meV. In addition, an intensity enhancement of $both$ A and B has been observed, although B is not crossing $E_{\rm F}$. Those two facts are apparently incompatible with the simple rigid-band shift due to electron doping. We point out that such phenomena can be understood in terms of the strong Hund's rule energy stabilization in the 3$d^5$ configuration at the Fe sites in this compound. From an observed band-narrowing, we have also deduced a mass enhancement of $\sim$2.5 with respect to the band theory, in good agreement with a specific heat measurement., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We have investigated the electronic structure of polycrystalline Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$ using photoemission spectroscopy and band-structure calculations within the local-density approximation+$U$ (LDA+$U$) scheme. In valence-band photoemission spectra, a double-peak structure which is characteristic of the metallic double perovskite series has been observed near the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$), although it is less distinct compared to the Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ case. The leading near-$E_{\rm F}$ structure has a very weak spectral weight at $E_{\rm F}$ above the metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature $T_{\rm MI}$ of $\sim$140 K, and it loses the $E_{\rm F}$ weight below $T_{\rm MI}$, forming a small energy gap. To reproduce this small energy gap in the calculation, we require a very large effective $U$ ($U_{\rm eff}$) for Re (4 eV) in addition to a relatively large $U_{\rm eff}$ for Fe (4 eV). Although the most of the experimental features can be interpreted with the help of the band theory, the overall agreement between the theory and the experiment was not satisfactory. We demonstrate that the effective transfer integral between Fe and Re is actually smaller than that between Fe and Mo in Ca$_2$FeMoO$_6$, which can explain both MIT and very high ferrimagnetic transition temperature., Comment: 7 pages text, 5 figures, to be pulished in Phys. We describe a new method to accelerate neighbor searches on GRAPE, i.e. a special purpose hardware that efficiently calculates gravitational forces and potentials in $N$-body simulations. In addition to the gravitational calculations, GRAPE simultaneously constructs the lists of neighbor particles that are necessary for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). However, data transfer of the neighbor lists from GRAPE to the host computer is time consuming, and can be a bottleneck. In fact, the data transfer can take about the same time as the calculations of forces themselves. Making use of GRAPE's special treatment of neighbor lists, we can reduce the amount of data transfer if we search neighbors in the order that the neighbor lists, constructed in a single GRAPE run, overlap each other. We find that the Morton-ordering requires very low additional calculation and programming costs, and results in successful speed-up on data transfer. We show some benchmark results in the case of GRAPE-5. Typical reduction in transferred data becomes as much as 90%. Direct electronic structure measurements of a variety of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides show the presence of a pseudogap at the Fermi energy E_F which drastically suppresses the electron spectral function at E_F. The pseudogap is a strong function of the layer number of the samples (sample dimensionality) and is strongly temperature dependent, with the changes beginning at the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_c. These trends are consistent with the major transport trends of the CMR oxides, implying a direct relationship between the pseudogap and transport, including the "colossal" conductivity changes which occur across T_c. The k-dependence of the temperature-dependent effects indicate that the pseudogap observed in these compounds is not due to the extrinsic effects proposed by Joynt., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. We probed spin-spin correlations up to 725 K with 63Cu NQR in the S= 1/2 three-leg ladder Sr2Cu3O5. We present experimental evidence that below 300 K, weak inter-ladder coupling causes dimensional crossover of the spin-spin correlation length \xi from quasi-1d (\xi ~ 1/T) to anisotropic 2d regime (\xi \~ exp[2\pi\rho_{s}/T], where 2\pi\rho_{s} = 290 +/- 30 K is the effective spin stiffness). This is the first experimental verification of the renormalized classical behavior of the anisotropic non-linear sigma model in 2d, which has been recently proposed for the striped phase in high T_{c} cuprates., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
