Abstract

The superfluid $^3$He B phase, one of the oldest unconventional fermionic condensates experimentally realized, is recently predicted to support Majorana fermion surface states. Majorana fermion, which is characterized by the equivalence of particle and antiparticle, has a linear dispersion relation referred to as the Majorana cone. We measured the transverse acoustic impedance $Z$ of the superfluid$^3$He B phase changing its boundary condition and found a growth of peak in $Z$ on a higher specularity wall. Our theoretical analysis indicates that the variation of $Z$ is induced by the formation of the cone-like dispersion relation and thus confirms the important feature of the Majorana fermion in the specular limit., Comment: 9pages, 4 figures, to be published in the Journal of Physical Society of Japan, Vol.80, No.1 (2011)

Abstract

A Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnkov (FFLO) state was previously reported in the quasi-2D heavy fermion CeCoIn5 when a magnetic field was applied parallel to the ab-plane. Here, we conduct 115^In NMR studies of this material in a PERPENDICULAR field, and provide strong evidence for FFLO in this case as well. Although the topology of the phase transition lines in the H-T phase diagram is identical for both configurations, there are several remarkable differences between them. Compared to H//ab, the FFLO region for H perpendicular to the ab-plane shows a sizable decrease, and the critical field separating the FFLO and non-FFLO superconducting states almost ceases to have a temperature dependence. Moreover, directing H perpendicular to the ab-plane results in a notable change in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum within the planar node associated with the FFLO transition., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We have observed the orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic Mott-insulator Lu2V2O7 by the polarized neutron diffraction technique. The orbital ordering pattern determined from the observed magnetic form factors can be explained in terms of a linear combination of wave functions |yz>, |zx> and |xy>; |0> = (1/3)^(1/2) |xy> + (1/3)^(1/2)|yz> + (1/3)^(1/2) |zx> which is proportional to |(x + y + z)^2 - r^2>; where each orbital is extended toward the center-of-mass of the V tetrahedron. We discuss the stability of the ferromagnetic Lu2V2O7, using a Hubbard Hamiltonian with these three orbitals., Comment: 17pages. to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 74 (2005)

Abstract

The cyclotron resonance of the correlated two-dimentional electrons on liquid helium in high magnetic fields is investigated on the basis of the newly developed theory. Electrons are assumed to form a Wigner crystal, and the electron correlation effect is taken into account through the self-consistently determined Wigner phonons, where the electron-electron interaction, the electron-ripplon and electron-vapor atom scatterings are considered on the same footing. The numerical calculations show a very good agreement with experiments without any fitting parameters., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

High energy physics experiments in KEK/Japan rush into over KHz trigger stage. Thus, we need a successor of the data acquisition(DAQ) system that replaces the CAMAC or FASTBUS systems. To meet these needs, we have developed a DAQ system which includes a crate, base-board modules, daughter cards for front-end A/D or T/D conversion, and back-end communication cards for data transfer and timing control. The size of the crate is for the 9U Euro-cards with the standard VME32 bus and extension connectors for power supply. The base-board comprises of a local bus with the sequencer connected to the front-end daughter cards via event buffering FIFOs, and the standard PMC (PCI mezzanine card) bus to be set a PMC processor unit to reduce data size from the front-end daughter cards. A data transfer module, which is connected to the event building system, and a trigger control unit, which communicates with the central timing controller are installed on the back-end communication card connected to the rear end of the base-board. We describe the design of this DAQ system and evaluate the performance of it.

Abstract

Data logging at an upgraded KEKB accelerator or the J-PARC facility, currently under commission, requires a high density data acquisition platform with integrated data reduction CPUs. To follow market trends, we have developed a DAQ platform based on the PCI bus, a choice which permits a fast DAQ and a long expected lifetime of the system. The platform is a 9U-VME motherboard consisting of four slots for signal digitization modules, readout FIFOs for data buffering, and three PMC slots, on one of which resides a data reduction CPU. We have performed long term and thermal stability tests. 11. N\'eel and singlet RVB orders in the t-J model

Abstract

The N\'eel and the singlet RVB orders of the {\it t-J} model in a 2D square lattice are studied in the slave-boson mean-field approximation. It is shown that the N\'eel order parameter takes the maximum value at the finite temperature and disappear at the lower temperature for a certain range of doping. It is also shown that the N\'eel and the singlet RVB orders coexist at low temperature. Abstract

Background The efficacy and tolerability of eculizumab were assessed in REGAIN, a 26-week, phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive (AChR+) refractory generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), and its open-label extension. Methods Attainment of ‘minimal symptom expression’ was evaluated using patient-reported outcome measures of gMG symptoms [MG activities of daily living scale (MG-ADL), 15-item MG quality of life questionnaire (MG-QOL15)] at the completion of REGAIN and during the open-label extension. ‘Minimal symptom expression’ was defined as MG-ADL total score of 0–1 or MG-QOL15 total score of 0–3. Results At REGAIN week 26, more eculizumab-treated patients achieved ‘minimal symptom expression’ versus placebo [MG-ADL: 21.4% vs 1.7%; difference 19.8%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 8.5, 31.0; p = 0.0007; MG-QOL15: 16.1% vs 1.7%; difference 14.4%; 95% CI 4.3, 24.6; p = 0.0069]. During the open-label extension, the proportion of patients in the placebo/eculizumab group who achieved ‘minimal symptom expression’ increased after initiating eculizumab treatment and was sustained through 130 weeks of open-label eculizumab (MG-ADL: 1.7 to 27.8%; MG-QOL15: 1.7 to 19.4%). At extension study week 130, similar proportions of patients in the eculizumab/eculizumab and placebo/eculizumab groups achieved ‘minimal symptom expression’ (MG-ADL: 22.9% and 27.8%, respectively, p = 0.7861; MG-QOL15: 14.3% and 19.4%, respectively, p = 0.7531). The long-term tolerability of eculizumab was consistent with previous reports. Conclusions Patients with AChR+ refractory gMG who receive eculizumab can achieve sustained ‘minimal symptom expression’ based on patient-reported outcomes. ‘Minimal symptom expression’ may be a useful tool in measuring therapy effectiveness in gMG. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether eculizumab, a terminal complement inhibitor, improves patient- and physician-reported outcomes (evaluated using the myasthenia gravis activities of daily living profile and the quantitative myasthenia gravis scale, respectively) in patients with refractory anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive generalized myasthenia gravis across four domains, representing ocular, bulbar, respiratory, and limb/gross motor muscle groups. METHODS: Patients with refractory anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive generalized myasthenia gravis were randomized 1:1 to receive either placebo or eculizumab during the REGAIN study (NCT01997229). Patients who completed REGAIN were eligible to continue into the open-label extension trial (NCT02301624) for up to 4 years. The four domain scores of each of the myasthenia gravis activities of daily living profile and the quantitative myasthenia gravis scale recorded throughout REGAIN and through 130 weeks of the open-label extension were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 125 patients who participated in REGAIN, 117 enrolled in the open-label extension; 61 had received placebo and 56 had received eculizumab during REGAIN. Patients experienced rapid improvements in total scores and all four domain scores of both the myasthenia gravis activities of daily living profile and the quantitative myasthenia gravis scale with eculizumab treatment. These improvements were sustained through 130 weeks of the open-label extension. Abstract

The epithelial cell rests of Malassez (ERM) play a pivotal role in preventing ankylosis between the alveolar bone and the tooth. Although several functions of ERM has been reported, the mechanism behind preventing dentoalveolar ankylosis remains unclear. In this study, 18 clones were isolated from ERM (CRUDE) using the single-cell limiting dilution method. Among them, ERM-2 and -3, which exhibited the highest and lowest proliferation rates, respectively, were selected. ERM-2, ERM-3, and CRUDE ERM were stained with epithelial markers, including cytokeratin-wide and cytokeratin-19, via immunofluorescence. The qRT-PCR analysis revealed increased expression levels of p75 (ameloblast marker), amelogenin, and sfrp5 (inner enamel epithelial cell marker) in the ERM-2 cells. Alternatively, ameloblastin and ck-14 (outer enamel epithelial cell marker) were highly expressed in ERM-3 cells. The mineralization of human periodontal ligament fibroblast (HPDLF) was inhibited when co-cultured with ERM-2, ERM-3, and CRUDE ERM cells. The addition of an anti-amelogenin antibody restored the mineralization of HPDLF cells. Transplanted rat molar cultured in ERM-2 (high amelogenin secretive clone) cell-derived supernatant resulted in significantly smaller bone formation than those cultured in the CRUDE ERM and ERM-3 cell-derived supernatants. These findings indicate that amelogenin produced by ERM cells might be involved in preventing dentoalveolar ankylosis.

Abstract

Introduction/Aims: Individuals with refractory generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) who have a history of rituximab use and experience persistent symptoms represent a population with unmet treatment needs. The aim of this analysis was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of eculizumab in patients with refractory anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive (AChR+) gMG previously treated with rituximab. Methods: This post hoc subgroup analysis of the phase 3 REGAIN study (NCT01997229) and its open-label extension (OLE; NCT02301624) compared baseline characteristics, safety, and response to eculizumab in participants who had previously received rituximab with those who had not. Rituximab use was not permitted within the 6 months before screening or during REGAIN/OLE. Results: Of 125 REGAIN participants, 14 had received rituximab previously (7 received placebo and 7 received eculizumab). In the previous-rituximab group, 57% had used at least four other immunosuppressants compared with 16% in the no-previous-rituximab group. Myasthenia Gravis Activities of Daily Living total scores from eculizumab baseline to week 130 of eculizumab treatment improved in both the previous-rituximab and no-previous-rituximab groups (least-squares mean −4.4, standard error of the mean [SEM] 1.0 [n = 9] and least-squares mean −4.6, SEM 0.3 [n = 67], respectively; difference = 0.2, 95% confidence interval −1.88 to 2.22). In addition, in both groups, most patients who were treated with eculizumab for 130 weeks achieved a Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America post-intervention status of minimal manifestations (66.7% and 65.0%, respectively). The eculizumab safety profile was similar between groups and consistent with its established profile. Discussion: Eculizumab is an effective therapy for patients with refractory AChR+ gMG, irrespective of whether they had received rituximab treatment previously.

Abstract

The printed electronics enables the fabrication of a variety of devices and is becoming important as critical techniques for some applications in diverse areas. In the area the junctions formed at the contact between printed electrodes and semiconductors remain a crucial challenge. In this paper, we performed the first demonstration of the silicon-based Schottky barrier diode by printing method. For the demonstration, the electrode was fabricated through the printing of the silver nanoink on p-type silicon and sintering. Measurement of I-V characteristics, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy together with Kelvin probe force microscopy were performed for understanding the interface between silver and silicon.

Abstract

We propose reservoir computing (RC), a framework for constructing recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with simple training rule, using ferroelectric tunnel junction (FTJ) crossbar array. Not only the weights of connection between reservoir layer and output layer need to be trained, but also random fixed weights within reservoir layer can be realized by the conductance of FTJs. Random weights within reservoir layers have optimal variability, which is dependent not on the type of the distribution but on the reservoir size. Optimal variability can be attained by device-to-device variability in FTJs together with analog converters on the wordlines and the bitlines. Analog resistive switching characteristics in FTJs can also realize the weights connected to output layer, which need to be trained. Furthermore, device-to-device variability in Hf $_{{1}- {x}}$ ZrxO2 (HZO) FTJ is extensively investigated. Taking into account the low current operation in FTJs, RC with FTJ crossbar array is a potential candidate for neuromorphic computing system with low power consumption.

Abstract

Purpose To evaluate the effect of eculizumab on perceived fatigue in patients with anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive, refractory, generalized myasthenia gravis (MG) using the Quality of Life in Neurological Disorders (Neuro-QOL) Fatigue subscale, and to evaluate correlations between improvements in Neuro-QOL Fatigue and other clinical endpoints. Methods Neuro-QOL Fatigue, MG Activities of Daily Living (MG-ADL), Quantitative MG (QMG), and the 15-item MG Quality of Life (MG-QOL15) scales were administered during the phase 3, randomized, placebo-controlled REGAIN study (eculizumab, n = 62; placebo, n = 63) and subsequent open-label extension (OLE). Data were analyzed using repeated-measures models. Correlations between changes in Neuro-QOL Fatigue and in MG-ADL, QMG, and MG-QOL15 scores were determined at REGAIN week 26. Results At REGAIN week 26, eculizumab-treated patients showed significantly greater improvements in Neuro-QOL Fatigue scores than placebo-treated patients (consistent with improvements in MG-ADL, QMG, and MG-QOL15 scores previously reported in REGAIN). Improvements with eculizumab were sustained through OLE week 52. Correlations between Neuro-QOL Fatigue and MG-QOL15, MG-ADL, and QMG scores were strong for eculizumab-treated patients at REGAIN week 26, and strong, moderate, and weak, respectively, for placebo-treated patients. Conclusions Compared with placebo, eculizumab was associated with improvements in perceived fatigue that strongly correlated with improvements in MG-specific outcome measures. Abstract

The objective of this study is aluminide overlay coatings of MCrAlY sprayed by a vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) process for the protection against high-temperature corrosion and oxidation of gas turbine components. Diffusion coating processes have been applied for many years to improve similarly the environmental resistance by enriching the surface of nickel-based superalloys with chromium, aluminum, or silicon element. Recently, aluminizing of MCrAlY coatings is used for improving further the high-temperature oxidation resistance. However, the aluminizing properties of plasma-sprayed MCrAlY coatings, which have an important effect on the coating performance, have not been clarified. In this study, five kinds of plasma-sprayed MCrAlY (CoCrAlY, CoNiCrAlY, CoNiCrAlY + Ta, NiCrAlY, and NiCoCrAlY) coating were selected for pack-aluminizing tests. The as sprayed and the heat-treated (1393 K, 2 h, argon cooled and 1116 K, 24 h, argon cooled) MCrAlY specimens were Al-Cr-[Al.sub.2][O.sub.3]-N[H.sub.4]Cl pack-aluminized at 1173, 1223, and 1273 K for 5, 10, and 20 h, respectively. The experimental results showed that the aluminizing process formed the aluminum rich layers of NiAl or CoAl phase. It also indicated that the thickness of the aluminum rich layer showed a parabolic time-dependence in all MCrAlY coatings. The order of reaction diffusion rate was NiCoCrAlY=NiCrAlY>CoNiCrAlY >CoNiCrAlY + Ta>CoCrAlY. There was a tendency that the reaction diffusion rate by aluminizing increased with increasing nickel content in the MCrAlY coatings and the reaction diffusion rate of as sprayed MCrAlY coatings is faster than that of the heat-treated MCrAlY coatings.
