Search

Magneto-conductance in thin wires often exhibits complicated patterns due to the quantum interference of conduction electrons. These patterns reflect microscopic structures in the wires, such as defects or potential distributions. In this study, we propose an inverse design method to automatically generate a microscopic structure that exhibits desired magneto-conductance patterns. We numerically demonstrate that our method accurately generates defect positions in wires and can be effectively applied to various complicated patterns. The recently discovered altermagnets exhibit collinear magnetic order with zero net magnetization but with unconventional spin-polarized d/g/i-wave band structures, expanding the known paradigms of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. In addition to novel current-driven electronic transport effects, the unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking in these systems also makes it possible to obtain a spin response to linearly polarized fields in the optical frequency domain. We show through ab-initio calculations of the prototypical d-wave altermagnet RuO$_2$, with $[C_2\|C_{4z}]$ symmetry combining twofold spin rotation with fourfold lattice rotation, that there is an optical analogue of a spin splitter effect, as the coupling to a linearly polarized exciting laser field makes the d-wave character of the altermagnet directly visible. By magneto-optical measurements on RuO$_2$ films of a few nanometer thickness, we demonstrate the predicted connection between the polarization of an ultrashort pump pulse and the sign and magnitude of a persistent optically excited electronic spin polarization. Our results point to the possibility of exciting and controlling the electronic spin polarization in altermagnets by such ultrashort optical pulses. In addition, the possibility of exciting an electronic spin polarization by linearly polarized optical fields in a compensated system is a unique consequence of the altermagnetic material properties, and our experimental results therefore present an indication for the existence of an altermagnetic phase in ultrathin RuO$_2$ films.

Hybridized nuclear and electron spin excitation in a MnCO$_3$ crystal, a weakly-anisotropic antiferromagnet, has been investigated. In this material, the hyperfine interaction is strong enough to form a nuclear spin wave. We measure the microwave absorption by a bulk MnCO$_3$ and observe the dispersion representing strong frequency repulsion between electron and nuclear modes due to their hybridization, the signature of nuclear spin wave. Additionally, we observe that the nuclear spin resonance enters a nonlinear regime above a certain excitation power, attributed to the excitation of finite wavenumber nuclear spin waves., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In the quantum Hall regime the charge current is carried by ideal one-dimensional edge channels where the backscattering is prohibited by topology. This results in the constant potential along the edge of the Hall bar leading to zero 4-terminal longitudinal resistance r_xx. Finite scattering between the counter-propagating edge states, when the topological protection is broken, commonly results in r_xx > 0. However, a local disorder, if allowing intersection of the edge states, can result in a counter-intuitive scenario when r_xx<0. In this work we report the observation and a systematic study of such unconventional negative longitudinal resistance seen in an encapsulated monolayer graphene Hall bar device measured in the quantum Hall regime. We supplement our findings with the numerical calculations which allow us to outline the conditions necessary for the appearance of negative r_xx and to exclude the macroscopic disorder (contamination bubble) as the main origin of it.

Spin torque nano-oscillators realized by magnetization dynamics trapped in a current-induced potential are reported. We fabricated Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/Pt nanostructures and measured current-induced microwave emission from the structures. The result shows an increase in the magnitude and spectral narrowing of the microwave emission. We demonstrate that the current-induced magnetic field suppresses magnon radiation loss and significantly reduces the linewidth and the threshold current required for the spin torque oscillation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated temporal fluctuation of superconducting qubits via the time-resolved measurement for an IBM Quantum system. We found that the qubit error rate abruptly changes during specific time intervals. Each high error state persists for several tens of seconds, and exhibits an on-off behavior. The observed temporal instability can be attributed to qubit transitions induced by a measurement stimulus. Resonant transition between fluctuating dressed states of the qubits coupled with high-frequency resonators can be responsible for the error-rate change., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

The emergence of bulk carbon ferromagnetism is long-expected over years. At nanoscale, carbon ferromagnetism was detected by analyzing the magnetic edge states via scanning tunneling microscopy(STM), and its origin can be explained by local redistribution of electron wave function. In larger scale, carbon ferromagnetism can be created by deliberately producing defects in graphite, and detected by macroscopic technical magnetization. Meanwhile, it becomes crucial to determine that the detected magnetization is originated from carbon rather than from magnetic impurities. One solution is X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Nonetheless, a reproducible, full section of XMCD spectrum across C-1s absorption energy has not appeared yet, which should be decisive for assuring the indisputable existence of bulk carbon ferromagnetism. Besides, the lack of direct observation on the atomic structure of the ferromagnetic carbon leaves the structural origin of its ferromagnetism still in mist. In this work, for detecting bulk carbon ferromagnetism, we managed to grow all-carbon film consisting of vertically aligned graphene multi-edge (VGME), which wove into a three-dimensional hyperfine-porous network. Magnetization (M-H) curves and XMCD spectra co-confirmed bulk carbon ferromagnetism of VGME at room temperature, with the average unit magnetic momentum of ~0.0006 miuB/atom. The influence of magnetic impurities on magnetization was excluded by both absorption spectra and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements. The spin transfer behavior also verified the long-range and robust feature of the bulk carbon ferromagnetism. Our work provides direct evidence of elementary resolved bulk carbon ferromagnetism at room temperature and clarifies its origin from pi-electrons at graphene edges.

Magnets are interesting materials for classical and quantum information technologies. However, the short decoherence and dephasing times that determine the scale and speed of information networks, severely limit the appeal of employing the ferromagnetic resonance. Here we show that the lifetime and coherence of the uniform Kittel mode can be enhanced by 3-magnon interaction-induced mixing with the long-lived magnons at the minima of the dispersion relation. Analytical and numerical calculations based on this model explain recent experimental results and predict experimental signatures of quantum coherence.

Quality of the electrical contacts and interfaces in various metal/semiconductor/insulator heterostructures is one of the pivotal aspects in both applied and fundamental research areas. For instance, non-optimal contact resistance can limit the overall efficiency of a certain developed technology and thus considerably narrow the range or fully block its practical application. On the other hand in fundamental research it is often the case that the manifestation of targeted phenomenon crucially depends on the level of contamination in the fabricated experimental samples. Here we offer a set of recipes that are aimed at contamination-free and damage-free fabrication of the devices, mostly developed for the two dimensional materials, but nevertheless applicable for a wider range of the systems, where the quality of the interfaces and/or non-invasiveness of the fabrication recipes are important. Our recipes are based on the preparation of the flexible PMMA membranes, with the help of which we can prepare residue-free or damage-free electrical connections to the studied material.

We report electric detection of the spin Peltier effect (SPE) in a bilayer consisting of a Pt film and a Y$_{3}$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) single crystal at the cryogenic temperature $T$ as low as 2 K based on a RuO$_2$$-$AlO$_x$ on-chip thermometer film. By means of a reactive co-sputtering technique, we successfully fabricated RuO$_2$$-$AlO$_x$ films having a large temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of $\sim 100\% ~\textrm{K}^{-1}$ at around $2~\textrm{K}$. By using the RuO$_2$$-$AlO$_x$ film as an on-chip temperature sensor for a Pt/YIG device, we observe a SPE-induced temperature change on the order of sub-$\mu \textrm{K}$, the sign of which is reversed with respect to the external magnetic field $B$ direction. We found that the SPE signal gradually decreases and converges to zero by increasing $B$ up to $10~\textrm{T}$. The result is attributed to the suppression of magnon excitations due to the Zeeman-gap opening in the magnon dispersion of YIG, whose energy much exceeds the thermal energy at 2 K., Comment: Editors' Suggestion, 11 pages, 7 figures

We construct a holographic dual theory of one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain, which includes two Chern-Simons gauge fields and a charged scalar field. Thermodynamic quantities of the spin chain at low temperatures, which are exactly calculated from the integrability, are completely reproduced by the dual theory on three-dimensional black hole backgrounds and the exact matching of the parameters between the dual theory and the spin chain is obtained. Quantum coherence in a qubit is vulnerable to environmental noise. When long quantum calculation is run on a quantum processor without error correction, the noise often causes fatal errors and messes up the calculation. Here, we propose quantum-circuit distillation to generate quantum circuits that are short but have enough functions to produce an output almost identical to that of the original circuits. The distilled circuits are less sensitive to the noise and can complete calculation before the quantum coherence is broken in the qubits. We created a quantum-circuit distillator by building a reinforcement learning model, and applied it to the inverse quantum Fourier transform (IQFT) and Shor's quantum prime factorization. The obtained distilled circuit allows correct calculation on IBM-Quantum processors. By working with the quantum-circuit distillator, we also found a general rule to generate quantum circuits approximating the general $n$-qubit IQFTs. We report a systematic quantitative evaluation of parametric amplification gain of magnetization dynamics in ytirrium iron garnet ($\mathrm{Y}_3\mathrm{Fe}_5\mathrm{O}_{12}$) thin disk via a.c. spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect. We demonstrate its signature phase-dependence where amplification and attenuation occur every $\frac{\pi}{2}$ phase shift of the input signal. The results also show the pump-power dependence of the gain that is explained well by our theoretical model. Finally, the optimal conditions for the amplification is investigated by measuring the magnetic field dependence, where we find the highest gain of 11.4 dB., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 14 panels

We have investigated instability of a superconducting quantum computer by continuously monitoring the qubit output. We found that qubits exhibit a step-like change in the error rates. This change is repeatedly observed, and each step persists for several minutes. By analyzing the correlation between the increased errors and anomalous variance of the output, we demonstrate quantum error mitigation based on post-selection. Parametric oscillation occurs when the resonance frequency of an oscillator is periodically modulated. Owing to time-reversal symmetry breaking in magnets, nonreciprocal magnons can be parametrically excited when spatial-inversion symmetry breaking is provided. This means that magnons with opposite propagation directions have different amplitudes. Here we demonstrate switching on and off the magnon parametric oscillation by reversing the external field direction applied to a Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ micro-structured film. The result originates from the nonreciprocity of surface mode magnons, leading to field-direction dependence of the magnon accumulation under a nonuniform microwave pumping. We study current-induced switching of the N\'eel vector in CoO/Pt bilayers to understand the underlaying antiferromagnetic switching mechanism. Surprisingly, we find that for ultra-thin CoO/Pt bilayers electrical pulses along the same path can lead to an increase or decrease of the spin Hall magnetoresistance signal, depending on the current density of the pulse. By comparing the results of these electrical measurements to XMLD-PEEM imaging of the antiferromagnetic domain structure before and after the application of current pulses, we reveal the reorientation of the N\'eel vector in ultra-thin CoO(4 nm). This allows us to determine that even opposite resistance changes can result from a thermomagnetoelastic switching mechanism. Importantly, our spatially resolved imaging shows that regions where the current pulses are applied and regions further away exhibit different switched spin structures, which can be explained by a spin-orbit torque based switching mechanism that can dominate in very thin films.

In comparison to transport of spin polarization in ferromagnets, transport of electric polarization in ferroelectrics remains less explored. Taking an excitonic insulator model of electronic ferroelectricity as a prototypical example, we theoretically investigate the low-energy dynamics and transport of electric polarization by microscopically constructing the Ginzburg-Landau action. We show that, because of the scalar nature of the excitonic order parameter, only the longitudinal fluctuations are relevant to the transport of electric polarization. Along with the progress of spin science and spintronics research, the flow of electron spins, (i.e. spin current), has attracted interest. New phenomena and electronic states were explained in succession using the concept of spin current. Moreover, as many of the conventionally known spintronics phenomena became well organized based on spin current, it has rapidly been recognized as an essential concept in a wide range of condensed matter physics. In this article, we focus on recent developments in the physics of spin, spin current, and their related phenomena, where the conversion between spin angular momentum and different forms of angular momentum plays an essential role. Starting with an introduction to spin current, we first discuss the recent progress in spintronic phenomena driven by spin-exchange coupling: spin pumping, topological Hall torque, and emergent inductor. We, then, extend our discussion to the interaction/interconversion of spins with heat, lattice vibrations, and charge current and address recent progress and perspectives on the spin Seebeck and Peltier effects. Next, we review the interaction between mechanical motion and electron/nuclear spins and argue the difference between the Barnett field and rotational Doppler effect. We demonstrate how the antiferromagnetic order in heterostructures of NiO/Pt thin films can be modified by optical pulses. We irradiate our samples with laser light and identify an optically induced creation of antiferromagnetic domains by imaging the created domain structure utilizing the X-ray magnetic linear dichroism effect. We study the effect of different laser polarizations on the domain formation and identify a polarization-independent creation of 180{\deg} domain walls and domains with 180{\deg} different N\'eel vector orientation. By varying the irradiation parameters, we determine the switching mechanism to be thermally induced and demonstrate the reversibility. We thus demonstrate experimentally the possibility to optically create antiferromagnetic domains, an important step towards future functionalization of all optical switching mechanisms in antiferromagnets.

We have investigated hybridized magnon-phonon excitation (magnon polarons) in spin Seebeck effects (SSEs) in Bi$_x$Y$_{3-x}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ (Bi$_x$Y$_{3-x}$IG; $x=0$, $0.5$, and $0.9$) films with Pt contact. We observed sharp peak structures in the magnetic field $H$ dependence of the longitudinal SSE (LSSE) voltages, which appear when the phonon dispersions are tangential to the magnon dispersion curve in Bi$_x$Y$_{3-x}$IG. By increasing the Bi amount $x$, the peak fields in the LSSE shift toward lower $H$ values due to the reduction of the sound velocities in Bi$_x$Y$_{3-x}$IG. We also measured the SSE in a nonlocal configuration and found that magnon-polaron anomalies appear with different signs and intensities. The understanding of antiferromagnetic domain walls, which are the interface between domains with different N\'eel order orientations, is a crucial aspect to enable the use of antiferromagnetic materials as active elements in future spintronic devices. In this work, we demonstrate that in antiferromagnetic NiO/Pt bilayers circular domain structures can be generated by switching driven by electrical current pulses. The generated domains are T-domains, separated from each other by a domain wall whose spins are pointing toward the average direction of the two T-domains rather than the common axis of the two planes. Interestingly, this direction is the same for the whole circular domain indicating the absence of strong Lifshitz invariants. The domain wall can be micromagnetically modeled by strain distributions in the NiO thin film induced by the MgO substrate, deviating from the bulk anisotropy. From our measurements we determine the domain wall width to have a full width at half maximum of $\Delta = 98 \pm 10$ nm, demonstrating strong confinement., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We have theoretically investigated the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in a normal metal (NM)/paramagnetic insulator (PI) bilayer system. Through a linear response approach, we calculated the thermal spin pumping from PI to NM and backflow spin current from NM to PI, where the spin-flip scattering via the interfacial exchange coupling between conduction-electron spin in NM and localized spin in PI is taken into account. We found a finite spin current appears at the interface under the difference in the effective temperatures between spins in NM and PI, and its intensity increases by increasing the density of the localized spin $S$. Our model well reproduces the magnetic-field-induced reduction of the paramagnetic SSE in Pt/Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ experimentally observed when the Zeeman energy is comparable to the thermal energy, which can be interpreted as the suppression of the interfacial spin-flip scattering. When the electric conductance of a nano-sized metal is measured at low temperatures, it often exhibits complex but reproducible patterns as a function of external magnetic fields, called quantum fingerprints in electric conductance. Such complex patterns are due to quantum-mechanical interference of conduction electrons; when thermal disturbance is feeble and coherence of the electrons extends all over the sample, the quantum interference pattern reflects microscopic structures, such as crystalline defects and the shape of the sample, giving rise to complicated interference. Although the interference pattern carries such microscopic information, it looks so random that it has not been analysed. Here we show that machine learning allows us to decipher quantum fingerprints; fingerprint patterns in magneto-conductance are shown to be transcribed into spatial images of electron wave function intensities (WIs) in a sample by using generative machine learning. The output WIs reveal quantum interference states of conduction electrons, as well as sample shapes. The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) refers to the generation of a spin current as a result of a temperature gradient in a magnetic material, which can be detected electrically via the inverse spin Hall effect in a metallic contact. Since the discovery of SSE in 2008, intensive studies on SSE have been conducted to elucidate its origin. SSEs appear in a wide range of magnetic materials including ferro-, ferri-, and antiferro-magnets and also paramagnets with classical or quantum spin fluctuation. SSE voltage reflects fundamental properties of a magnet, such as elementary excitation, static magnetic order, spin correlation, and spin transport. In this article, we review recent progress on SSEs in various systems, with particular emphasis on its emerging role as a probe of these magnetic properties in solids. We report the ultrafast, (sub)picosecond reduction of the antiferromagnetic order of the insulating NiO thin film in a Pt/NiO bilayer. This reduction of the antiferromagnetic order is not present in pure NiO thin films after a strong optical excitation. This ultrafast phenomenon is attributed to an ultrafast and highly efficient energy transfer from the optically excited electron system of the Pt layer into the NiO spin system. We propose that this energy transfer is mediated by a stochastic exchange scattering of hot Pt electrons at the Pt/NiO interface., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We demonstrate how shape-induced strain can be used to control antiferromagnetic order in NiO/Pt thin films. For rectangular elements patterned along the easy and hard magnetocrystalline anisotropy axes of our film, we observe different domain structures and we identify magnetoelastic interactions that are distinct for different domain configurations. We reproduce the experimental observations by modeling the magnetoelastic interactions, considering spontaneous strain induced by the domain configuration, as well as elastic strain due to the substrate and the shape of the patterns. This allows us to demonstrate and explain how the variation of the aspect ratio of rectangular elements can be used to control the antiferromagnetic ground state domain configuration. Shape-dependent strain does not only need to be considered in the design of antiferromagnetic devices, but can potentially be used to tailor their properties, providing an additional handle to control antiferromagnets.

We experimentally and theoretically demonstrate that nonlinear spin-wave interactions suppress the hybrid magnon-photon quasiparticle or "magnon polariton" in microwave spectra of an yttrium iron garnet film detected by an on-chip split-ring resonator. We observe a strong coupling between the Kittel and microwave cavity modes in terms of an avoided crossing as a function of magnetic fields at low microwave input powers, but a complete closing of the gap at high powers. The experimental results are well explained by a theoretical model including the three-magnon decay of the Kittel magnon into spin waves. The gap closure originates from the saturation of the ferromagnetic resonance above the Suhl instability threshold by a coherent back reaction from the spin waves., Comment: 6 pages

The 'magnon parametron' is a ferromagnetic particle that is parametrically excited by microwaves in a cavity. Above a certain threshold of the microwave power, a bistable steady state emerges that forms an effective Ising spin. We calculate the dynamics of the magnon parametron as a function of microwave power, applied magnetic field and temperature for the interacting magnon system, taking into account thermal and quantum fluctuations. We predict three dynamical phases, viz. a stable Ising spin, telegraph noise of thermally activated switching, and an intermediate regime that at lower temperatures is quantum correlated with significant distillible magnon entanglement. These three regimes of operation are attractive for alternative computing schemes.

A triplon refers to a fictitious particle that carries angular momentum $S = 1$ corresponding to the elementary excitation in a broad class of quantum dimerized spin systems. Such systems without magnetic order have long been studied as a testing ground for quantum properties of spins. Although triplons have been found to play a central role in thermal and magnetic properties in dimerized magnets with singlet correlation, a spin angular momentum flow carried by triplons, a triplon current, has not been detected yet. Here we report spin Seebeck effects induced by a triplon current: triplon spin Seebeck effect, using a spin-Peierls system CuGeO$_3$. The result shows that the heating-driven triplon transport induces spin current whose sign is positive, opposite to the spin-wave cases in magnets. The triplon spin Seebeck effect persists far below the spin-Peierls transition temperature, being consistent with a theoretical calculation for triplon spin Seebeck effects.

Understanding the electrical manipulation of antiferromagnetic order is a crucial aspect to enable the design of antiferromagnetic devices working at THz frequency. Focusing on collinear insulating antiferromagnetic NiO/Pt thin films as a materials platform, we identify the crystallographic orientation of the domains that can be switched by currents and quantify the N\'eel vector direction changes. We demonstrate electrical switching between different T-domains by current pulses, finding that the N\'eel vector orientation in these domains is along $[\pm5\ \pm5\ 19]$, different compared to the bulk $<11\bar{2}>$ directions. The final state of the N\'eel vector $\textbf{n}$ switching after current pulses $\textbf{j}$ along the $[1\ \pm1\ 0]$ directions is $\textbf{n}\parallel \textbf{j}$. By comparing the observed N\'eel vector orientation and the strain in the thin films, assuming that this variation arises solely from magnetoelastic effects, we quantify the order of magnitude of the magnetoelastic coupling coefficient as $b_{0}+2b_{1}=3*10^7 J\ m^{-3}$ . This information is key for the understanding of current-induced switching in antiferromagnets and for the design and use of such devices as active elements in spintronic devices.

We investigated the Dirac-cone state and its modulation when an ultrathin film of topological insulator Bi2Se3 was epitaxially grown on a van-der-Waals ferromagnet Cr2Si2Te6 (CST) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observed a gapless Dirac-cone surface state in 6 quintuple-layer (QL) Bi2Se3 on CST, whereas the Dirac cone exhibits a gap of 0.37 eV in 2QL counterpart. Intriguingly, this gap is much larger than those for Bi2Se3 films on Si(111). We also revealed no discernible change in the gap magnitude across the ferromagnetic transition of CST, suggesting the very small characteristic length and energy scale of the magnetic proximity effect. The present results suggest a crucial role of interfacial coupling for modulating Dirac electrons in topological-insulator hybrids.

Spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) refers to a resistance change in a metallic film reflecting the magnetization direction of a magnet attached to the film. The mechanism of this phenomenon is spin exchange between conduction-electron spins and magnetization at the interface. SMR has been used to read out information written in a small magnet and to detect magnetization dynamics, but it has been limited to magnets; magnetic ordered phases or instability of magnetic phase transition has been believed to be indispensable. Here, we report the observation of SMR in a paramagnetic insulator Gd$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$ (GGG) without spontaneous magnetization combined with a Pt film. The paramagnetic SMR can be attributed to spin-transfer torque acting on localized spins in GGG. We determine the efficiencies of spin torque and spin-flip scattering at the Pt/GGG interface, and demonstrate these quantities can be tuned with external magnetic fields. We demonstrate stable and reversible current induced switching of large-area ($> 100\;\mu m^2$) antiferromagnetic domains in NiO/Pt by performing concurrent transport and magneto-optical imaging measurements in an adapted Kerr microscope. By correlating the magnetic images of the antiferromagnetic domain changes and magneto-transport signal response in these current-induced switching experiments, we disentangle magnetic and non-magnetic contributions to the transport signal. We achieve current-induced switching in collinear insulating antiferromagnetic CoO/Pt, with fourfold in-plane magnetic anisotropy. This is measured electrically by spin Hall magnetoresistance and confirmed by the magnetic field-induced spin-flop transition of the CoO layer. By applying current pulses and magnetic fields, we quantify the efficiency of the acting current-induced torques and estimate a current-field equivalence ratio of $4x10^{-11} T A^{-1} m^2$. Excitation and propagation dynamics of spin waves in an iron-based garnet film under out-of-plane magnetic field were investigated by time-resolved magneto-optical imaging. The experimental results and the following data analysis by phase-resolved spin-wave tomography reveal the excitation of spin waves triggered by photo-induced demagnetization (PID) along the sample depth direction. Moreover, the fast relaxation of PID accompanied by the spin transfer due to spin-wave emission was observed. Possible scenarios of PID in the garnet film are discussed. We report the observation of anomalous peak structures induced by hybridized magnon-phonon excitation (magnon polarons) in the magnetic field dependence of the spin Peltier effect (SPE) in a Lu$_{2}$Bi$_{1}$Fe$_{4}$Ga$_{1}$O$_{12}$ (BiGa:LuIG) with Pt contact. The SPE peaks coincide with magnetic fields tuned to the threshold of magnon-polaron formation, consistent with the previous observation in the spin Seebeck effect. We report experimental observation of the refraction and re ection of propagating magnetostatic spin waves crossing a 90-degree domain wall (DW) in terms of time-resolved magneto-optical imaging. Due to the magnetization rotation across the 90-degree DW, the dispersion relation of magnetostatic spin waves rotates by 90 degrees, which results in the change in the propagation dynamics of spin waves in both sides of the DW. We observe the refraction and re ection of magnetosatatc spin waves at the 90-degree DW, and reveal their characteristics, such as negative refraction. Long-distance transport of spin information in insulators without long-range magnetic order has been recently reported. Here, we perform a complete characterization of amorphous Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (a-YIG) films grown on top of SiO$_2$. We confirm a clear amorphous structure and paramagnetic behavior of our a-YIG films, with semiconducting behavior resistivity that strongly decays with increasing temperature. The non-local transport measurements show a signal which is not compatible with spin transport and can be attributed to the drop of the a-YIG resistivity caused by Joule heating. Our results emphasize that exploring spin transport in amorphous materials requires careful procedures in order to exclude the charge contribution from the spin transport signals., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The angular momentum compensation temperature $T_{\rm A}$ of ferrimagnets has attracted much attention because of high-speed magnetic dynamics near $T_{\rm A}$. We show that NMR can be used to investigate domain wall dynamics near $T_{\rm A}$ in ferrimagnets. We performed $^{57}$Fe-NMR measurements on the ferrimagnet Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ with $T_{\rm A} = 245$ K. In a multi-domain state, the NMR signal is enhanced by domain wall motion. We found that the NMR signal enhancement shows a maximum at $T_{\rm A}$ in the multi-domain state. The NMR signal enhancement occurs due to increasing domain-wall mobility toward $T_{\rm A}$. We develop the NMR signal enhancement model involves domain-wall mobility. Our study shows that NMR in multi-domain state is a powerful tool to determine $T_{\rm A}$, even from a powder sample and it expands the possibility of searching for angular momentum-compensated materials., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report the nonlocal spin Seebeck effect (nlSSE) in a lateral configuration of Pt/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$(YIG)/Pt systems as a function of the magnetic field $B$ (up to 10 T) at various temperatures $T$ (3 K < $T$ < 300 K). The nlSSE voltage decreases with increasing $B$ in a linear regime with respect to the input power (the applied charge-current squared $I^2$). The reduction of the nlSSE becomes substantial when the Zeeman energy exceeds thermal energy at low temperatures, which can be interpreted as freeze-out of magnons relevant for the nlSSE. Furthermore, we found the non-linear power dependence of the nlSSE with increasing $I$ at low temperatures ($T$ < 20 K), at which the $B$-induced signal reduction becomes less visible. Our experimental results suggest that in the non-linear regime high-energy magnons are over populated than those expected from the thermal energy. Investigating exotic magnetic materials with spintronic techniques is effective at advancing magnetism as well as spintronics. In this work, we report unusual field-induced suppression of the spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in a quasi one-dimensional frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ magnet LiCuVO$_4$, known to exhibit spin-nematic correlation in a wide range of external magnetic field $B$. The suppression takes place above $|B| > 2$ T in spite of the $B$-linear isothermal magnetization curves in the same $B$ range. The result can be attributed to the growth of the spin-nematic correlation while increasing $B$. The correlation stabilizes magnon pairs carrying spin-2, thereby suppressing the interfacial spin injection of SSE by preventing the spin-1 exchange between single magnons and conduction electrons at the interface. We have studied the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in the layered ferromagnetic insulators CrSiTe$_3$ and CrGeTe$_3$ covered by Pt films in the measurement configuration where spin current traverses the ferromagnetic Cr layers. The LSSE response is clearly observed in the ferromagnetic phase and, in contrast to a standard LSSE magnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, persists above the critical temperatures in both CrSiTe$_3$/Pt and CrGeTe$_3$/Pt samples. With the help of a numerical calculation, we attribute the LSSE signals observed in the paramagnetic regime to exchange-dominated interlayer transport of in-plane paramagnetic moments reinforced by short-range ferromagnetic correlations and strong Zeeman effects., Comment: 5 figures

We introduce a new approach to understand magnetization dynamics in ferromagnets based on the holographic realization of ferromagnets. A Landau-Lifshitz equation describing the magnetization dynamics is derived from a Yang-Mills equation in the dual gravitational theory, and temperature dependences of the spin-wave stiffness and spin transfer torque appearing in the holographic Landau-Lifshitz equation are investigated by the holographic approach. Magnon propagation length in a ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has been investigated by measuring and analyzing the YIG-thickness t_YIG dependence of the spin Peltier effect (SPE) in a Pt/YIG junction system. By means of the lock-in thermography technique, we measured the spatial distribution of the SPE-induced temperature modulation in the Pt/YIG system with the t_YIG gradation, allowing us to obtain the accurate t_YIG dependence of SPE with high t_YIG resolution. We propose a topological characterization of Hamiltonians describing classical waves. Applying it to the magnetostatic surface spin waves that are important in spintronics applications, we settle the speculation over their topological origin. For a class of classical systems that includes spin waves driven by dipole-dipole interactions, we show that the topology is characterized by vortex lines in the Brillouin zone in such a way that the symplectic structure of Hamiltonian mechanics plays an essential role. We define winding numbers around these vortex lines and identify them to be the bulk topological invariants for a class of semimetals. Exploiting the bulk-edge correspondence appropriately reformulated for these classical waves, we predict that surface modes appear but not in a gap of the bulk frequency spectrum. This feature, consistent with the magnetostatic surface spin waves, indicates a broader realm of topological phases of matter beyond spectrally gapped ones., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. We demonstrate that the angular momentum compensation temperature $T_A$, at which the net angular momentum in the sample disappears, can be controlled in Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ by partially substituting Dy for Ho. The $T_A$ can be detected using the Barnett effect, by which mechanical rotation magnetizes an object due to spin-rotation coupling. We found that $T_A$ increases with the Dy content and clarified that the $T_A$ of Ho$_{1.5}$Dy$_{1.5}$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ coincides with room temperature. Machine learning technologies are expected to be great tools for scientific discoveries. In particular, materials development (which has brought a lot of innovation by finding new and better functional materials) is one of the most attractive scientific fields. To apply machine learning to actual materials development, collaboration between scientists and machine learning is becoming inevitable. However, such collaboration has been restricted so far due to black box machine learning, in which it is difficult for scientists to interpret the data-driven model from the viewpoint of material science and physics. Here, we show a material development success story that was achieved by good collaboration between scientists and one type of interpretable (explainable) machine learning called factorized asymptotic Bayesian inference hierarchical mixture of experts (FAB/HMEs). Based on material science and physics, we interpreted the data-driven model constructed by the FAB/HMEs, so that we discovered surprising correlation and knowledge about thermoelectric material. Guided by this, we carried out actual material synthesis that led to identification of a novel spin-driven thermoelectric material with the largest thermopower to date., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Half-metallic Heusler alloys are attracting considerable attention because of their unique half-metallic band structures which exhibit high spin polarization and yield huge magnetoresistance ratios. Besides serving as ferromagnetic electrodes, Heusler alloys also have the potential to host spin-charge conversion which has been recently demonstrated in other ferromagnetic metals. Here, we report on the spin-charge conversion effect in the prototypical Heusler alloy NiMnSb. Spin currents were injected from Y3Fe5O12 into NiMnSb films by spin pumping, and then the spin currents were converted to charge currents via spin-orbit interactions. Interestingly, an unusual charge signal was observed with a sign change at low temperature, which can be manipulated by film thickness and ordering structure. It is found that the spin-charge conversion has two contributions. First, the interfacial contribution causes a negative voltage signal, which is almost constant versus temperature. The second contribution is temperature dependent because it is dominated by minority states due to thermally excited magnons in the bulk part of the film. For longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) devices, a multilayer structure comprising ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic layers is expected to improve their thermoelectric power. In this study, we developed the fabrication method for alternately stacked yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG)/Pt multilayer films on a gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) (110) substrate, GGG/[YIG(49 nm)/Pt(4 nm)]$_n$ ($n =$ 1 - 5) based on room-temperature sputtering and $ex$-$situ$ post-annealing method and we evaluated their structural and LSSE properties. The fabricated [YIG/Pt]$_n$ samples show flat YIG/Pt interfaces and almost identical saturation magnetization $M_{\rm s}$, although they contain polycrystalline YIG layers on Pt layers as well as single-crystalline YIG layers on GGG. In the samples, we observed clear LSSE signals and found that the LSSE thermoelectric power factor (PF) increases monotonically with increasing $n$; the PF of the [YIG/Pt]$_5$ sample is enhanced by a factor of $\sim 28$ compared to that of [YIG/Pt]$_1$.
