Search

The Black Hole Explorer (BHEX) is a next-generation space very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) mission concept that will extend the ground-based millimeter/submillimeter arrays into space. The mission, closely aligned with the science priorities of the Japanese VLBI community, involves an active engagement of this community in the development of the mission, resulting in the formation of the Black Hole Explorer Japan Consortium. Here we present the current Japanese vision for the mission, ranging from scientific objectives to instrumentation. The Consortium anticipates a wide range of scientific investigations, from diverse black hole physics and astrophysics studied through the primary VLBI mode, to the molecular universe explored via a potential single-dish observation mode in the previously unexplored 50-70\,GHz band that would make BHEX the highest-sensitivity explorer ever of molecular oxygen. A potential major contribution for the onboard instrument involves supplying essential elements for its high-sensitivity dual-band receiving system, which includes a broadband 300\,GHz SIS mixer and a space-certified multi-stage 4.5K cryocooler akin to those used in the Hitomi and XRISM satellites by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The recent analysis of the Planck 2018 polarization data shows a nonzero isotropic cosmic birefringence (ICB) that is not explained within the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. We then explore the question of whether the nonzero ICB is interpreted by the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), or at the energy scales of the cosmic microwave background, the low-energy EFT (LEFT) whose dynamical degrees of freedom are five SM quarks and all neutral and charged leptons. Our systematic study reveals that any operator in the EFT on a cosmological background would not give the reported ICB angle, which is observationally consistent with frequency independence. In particular, we estimate the size of the ICB angle generated by the effect that the cosmic microwave background photons travel through the medium of the cosmic neutrino background with parity-violating neutrino-photon interactions and find that it would be too small to explain the data. If the reported ICB angle should be confirmed, then our result would indicate the existence of a new particle that is lighter than the electroweak scale and feebly interacting with the SM particles., Comment: 13+14 pages in JHEP style, no figure: published version

The gravitational positivity bound gives quantitative "swampland'' constraints on low-energy effective theories inside theories of quantum gravity. We give a comprehensive discussion of this bound for those interested in applications to phenomenological model building. We present a practical recipe for deriving the bound, and discuss subtleties relevant for realistic models. As an illustration, we study the positivity bound on the scattering of the massive gauge bosons in the Higgs/St\"{u}ckelberg mechanism. Under certain assumptions on gravitational amplitudes at high energy, we obtain a lower bound $m_{V} \gtrsim \Lambda_\mathrm{UV}^2 /g M_\mathrm{Pl}$ on the gauge boson mass $m_V$, where $g$ is the coupling constant of the gauge field, $M_\mathrm{Pl}$ is the reduced Planck mass and $\Lambda_\mathrm{UV}$ is the ultraviolet cutoff of the effective field theory. A metric transformation is a tool to find a new theory of gravity beyond general relativity. The gravity action is guaranteed to be free from a dangerous Ostrogradsky mode as long as the metric transformation is regular and invertible. Various degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor theories (DHOST) without extra degrees of freedom have been found through the metric transformation with a scalar field and its derivatives. In this work, we examine how a matter coupling changes the degeneracy for a theory generated from the Horndeski theory through the metric transformation with the second derivative of a scalar field, taking a minimally-coupled free scalar field as the matter field. When the transformation is invertible, this theory is equivalent to the Horndeski theory with a higher-order derivative coupling to the matter scalar field. Working in this Horndeski frame and the unitary gauge, we find that the degeneracy conditions are solvable and the matter metric must have a certain structure to remove the Ostrogradsky mode., Comment: 14+4 pages, no figures: published version: A typo in eq. The measurement of the inflationary stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) is one of the main goals of future GW experiments. In direct GW experiments, an obstacle to achieving it is the isolation of the inflationary SGWB from the other types of SGWB. In this paper, as a distinguishable signature of the inflationary SGWB, we argue the detectability of its universal property: antipodal correlations, i.e., correlations of GWs from the opposite directions, as a consequence of the horizon re-entry. A phase-coherent method has been known to be of no use for detecting the angular correlations in SGWB due to a problematic phase factor that erases the signal. We thus investigate whether we can construct a phase-incoherent estimator of the antipodal correlations in the intensity map. We found that the conclusion depends on whether the inflationary GWs have statistical isotropy or not. In the standard inflationary models with statistical homogeneity and isotropy, there is no estimator that is sensitive to the antipodal correlations but does not suffer from the problematic phase factor. On the other hand, it is possible to find a non-vanishing estimator of the antipodal correlations for inflationary models with statistical anisotropy. We develop a systematic and unified approach to estimate all possible secondary (i.e. non-primordial) nonlinear effects to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization, named curve-of-sight integration approach. In this approach, the Boltzmann equation for polarized photons is rewritten in a line-of-sight integral along an exact geodesic in the perturbed universe, rather than a geodesic in the background universe used in the linear-order CMB calculation. This approach resolves the difficulty to solve the Boltzmann hierarchy with the nonlinear gravitational effects in the photon free-streaming regime and thus unifies the standard remapping approach for CMB lensing into the direct approach solving the Boltzmann equation for the nonlinear collisional effects. In this paper, we derive formulae that: (i) include all the nonlinear effects; (ii) can treat extended sources such as the contributions after the reionization. It offers a solid framework to discuss possible systematics in the standard estimation of CMB lensing by the remapping approach. As an explicit demonstration, we estimate the secondary B-mode power spectrum induced by all foreground gravitational effects: lensing, redshift, time-delay, emission-angle, and polarization-rotation effects. We define these effects properly so that they do not have any overlap, also without overlooking any effect. Then, we show that these effects only give corrections of the order of 0.001-0.01% to the standard lensing-induced B-mode power spectrum in the concordance $\Lambda$ cold dark matter model. We investigate linear and non-linear dynamics of spherically symmetric perturbations on a static configuration in scalar-tensor theories focusing on the chameleon screening mechanism. We particularly address two questions: how much the perturbations can source the fifth force when the static background is well screened, and whether the resultant fifth force can change the stability and structure of the background configuration. For linear perturbations, we derive a lower bound for the square of the Fourier mode frequency $\omega^2$ using the adiabatic approximation. There may be unstable modes if this lower bound is negative, and we find that the condition of the instability can be changed by the fifth force although this effect is suppressed by the screening parameter. For non-linear perturbations, because we are mainly interested in short wavelength modes for which the fifth force may become stronger, we perform numerical simulations under the planar approximation. For a sufficiently large initial amplitude of the density perturbation, we find that the magnitude of the fifth force can be comparable to that of Newtonian gravity even when the model parameters are chosen so that the static background is well screened. It is also shown that if the screening is effective for the static background, the fluid dynamics is mostly governed by the pressure gradient and is not significantly affected by the fifth force., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures

We consider $f(R)$ gravity theories which unify $R^n$ inflation and dark energy models. First, from the final Planck data of the cosmic microwave background, we obtain a condition, $1.977 < n < 2.003$. Next, under this constraint, we investigate local-gravity tests for three models. We find that the $R^n$ term can dominate over the dark energy term even at the Earth's curvature scale, contrary to intuition; however, the $R^n$ term does not relax or tighten the constraints on the three models., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

During an accelerated expansion of the Universe, quantum fluctuations of sub-Planckian size can be stretched outside the horizon and be regarded effectively classical. Recently, it has been conjectured that such horizon-crossing of trans-Planckian modes never happens inside theories of quantum gravity (the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture, TCC). We point out several conceptual problems of this conjecture, which is in itself formulated as a statement on the restriction of possible scenarios in a theory: by contrast a standard swampland conjecture is a restriction of possible theories in the landscape of the quantum gravity. We emphasize the concept of swampland universality, i.e. that a swampland conjecture constrains any possible scenario in a given effective field theory. In order to illustrate the problems clearly we introduce several versions of the conjecture, where TCC condition is imposed differently to scenarios realizable in a given theory. We point out that these different versions of the conjecture lead to observable differences: a TCC violation in another Universe can exclude a theory, and such reduction of the landscape restricts possible predictions in our Universe. Our analysis raises the question of whether or not the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture can be regarded as a swampland conjecture concerning the existence of UV completion., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We discuss phenomenological consequences of the recently-introduced refinements of the de Sitter swampland conjecture. The conjecture constraints the first and the second derivatives of the scalar potential in terms of two $O(1)$ constants $c$ and $c'$, leading to interesting constraints on particle phenomenology, especially inflationary model building. We explore the possibility to make use of cosmological data to look for signatures of unknown heavy particles whose masses are on the order of the Hubble parameter during the time of inflation. To be more specific we take up the quasi-single field inflation model, in which the isocurvaton $\sigma $ is supposed to be the heavy particle. We study correlation functions involving both scalar ($\zeta $) and tensor ($\gamma $) perturbations and search for imprints of the $\sigma$-particle effects. We make use of the technique of the effective field theory for inflation to derive the $\zeta \sigma $ and $\gamma \zeta \sigma $ couplings. With these couplings we compute the effects due to $\sigma $ to the power spectrum $\langle \zeta \zeta \rangle $ and correlations $\langle \gamma^{s} \zeta \zeta \rangle$ and $\langle \gamma^{s_{1}} \gamma ^{s_{2}} \zeta \zeta \rangle $, where $s$, $s_{1}$ and $s_{2}$ are the polarization indices of gravitons. Numerical analyses of the $\sigma$-mass effects to these corrlations are presented. It is argued that future precise observations of these correlations could make it possible to measure the $\sigma$-mass and the strength of the $\zeta \sigma$ and $\gamma \zeta \sigma$ couplings. As an extension to the $N$-graviton case we also compute the correlations $\langle \gamma ^{s_{1}} \cdots \gamma ^{s_{N}} \zeta \zeta \rangle $ and $\langle \gamma ^{s_{1}} \cdots \cdots \gamma ^{s_{2N}} \zeta \zeta \rangle $ and their $\sigma$-mass effects. We investigate the validity of screening mechanism of the fifth force for chameleon field in highly inhomogeneous density profile. For simplicity, we consider a static and spherically symmetric system which is composed of concentric infinitely thin shells. We calculate the fifth force profile by using a numerical method for a relatively large Compton wavelength of the chameleon field. An approximate solution is also derived for the small Compton wavelength limit. Our results show that, if the thin-shell condition for the corresponding smoothed density profile is satisfied, the fifth force is safely screened outside the system irrespective of the configuration of the shells inside the system. In contrast to the screening outside the system, we find that the fifth force can be comparable to the Newtonian gravitational force inside the system. If the system is highly inhomogeneous, the chameleon field cannot trace the potential minimum varying with the density and repeats being kicked, climbing up and rolling down the potential even when the effective mass of the chameleon field is sufficiently large in the system on average. One should not feel complacent about the wellbehavedness of the fifth force field with an averaged density distribution when we consider inhomogeneous objects., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

We study the imprint of a massive scalar particle on cosmological correlation functions, and suggest the way to determine the mass of the newly introduced particle, which is expected to be around 10^14 GeV. After reviewing the basic theory by Maldacena and the effective field theory (EFT) of inflation by Cheung et al., we apply these two theories to construct new couplings of a massive scalar field with primordial fluctuations including an arbitrary number of gravitons. We compute some correlation functions including these couplings in the soft-graviton limit. We show that when the number of soft-gravitons is getting larger, the peak of the correlation function is shifted to larger mass of the scalar particle. In addition we derive a relation, which relates correlation functions with N+1 to N soft-gravitons when the mass of the scalar particle becomes much higher than 10^14 GeV, and confirm the relation by numerical analysis., Comment: 56 pages, 14 figures. Theories of dark energy and modified gravity can be strongly constrained by astrophysical or cosmological observations, as illustrated by the recent observation of the gravitational wave event GW170817 and of its electromagnetic counterpart GRB 170817A, which shows that the speed of gravitational waves, $c_g$, is the same as the speed of light, within deviations of order $10^{-15}$. This observation implies very severe restrictions on scalar-tensor theories, in particular theories whose action depends on second derivatives of a scalar field. Working in the very general framework of Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor (DHOST) theories, which encompass Horndeski and Beyond Horndeski theories, we present the DHOST theories that satisfy $c_g=c$. We then examine, for these theories, the screening mechanism that suppresses scalar interactions on small scales, namely the Vainshtein mechanism, and compute the corresponding gravitational laws for a non-relativistic spherical body. We show that it can lead to a deviation from standard gravity inside matter, parametrized by three coefficients which satisfy a consistency relation and can be constrained by present and future astrophysical observations., Comment: 5 pages; no figure; coincides with published version

Theories of gravity in the beyond Horndeski class encompass a wide range of scalar-tensor theories that will be tested on cosmological scales over the coming decade. In this work, we investigate the possibility of testing them in the strong-field regime by looking at the properties of compact objects-neutron, hyperon, and quark stars-embedded in an asymptotically de Sitter space-time, for a specific subclass of theories. We extend previous works to include slow rotation and find a relation between the dimensionless moment of intertia, ($\bar{I}=Ic^2/G_{\rm N} M^3$), and the compactness, $\cal{C}=G_{\rm N} M/Rc^2$ (an $\bar{I}$-$\cal{C}$ relation), independent of the equation of state, that is reminiscent of but distinct from the general relativity prediction. Several of our equations of state contain hyperons and free quarks, allowing us to revisit the hyperon puzzle. We find that the maximum mass of hyperon stars can be larger than $2M_\odot$ for small values of the beyond Horndeski parameter, thus providing a resolution of the hyperon puzzle based on modified gravity. Moreover, stable quark stars exist when hyperonic stars are unstable, which means that the phase transition from hyperon to quark stars is predicted just as in general relativity, albeit with larger quark star masses. Two important and potentially observable consequences of some of the theories we consider are the existence of neutron stars in a range of masses significantly higher than in GR, and $\bar{I}$-$\mathcal{C}$ relations that differ from their GR counterparts. In the former case, we find objects that, if observed, could not be accounted for in GR because they violate the usual GR causality condition. We end by discussing several difficult technical issues that remain to be addressed in order to reach more realistic predictions that may be tested using gravitational wave searches or neutron star observations., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. This work studies relativistic stars in beyond Horndeski scalar-tensor theories that exhibit a breaking of the Vainshtein mechanism inside matter, focusing on a model based on the quartic beyond Horndeski Lagrangian. We self-consistently derive the scalar field profile for static spherically symmetric objects in asymptotically de Sitter space-time and show that the Vainshtein breaking branch of the solutions is the physical branch thereby resolving several ambiguities with non-relativistic frameworks. The geometry outside the star is shown to be exactly Schwarzschild-de Sitter and therefore the PPN parameter $\beta_{\rm PPN}=1$, confirming that the external screening works at the post-Newtonian level. The Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations are derived and a new lower bound on the Vainshtein breaking parameter $\Upsilon_1>-4/9$ is found by requiring the existence of static spherically symmetric stars. Focusing on the unconstrained case where $\Upsilon_1<0$, we numerically solve the TOV equations for polytropic and realistic equations of state and find stars with larger radii at fixed mass. Furthermore, the maximum mass can increase dramatically and stars with masses in excess of $3M_\odot$ can be found for relatively small values of the Vainshtein breaking parameter. We re-examine white dwarf stars and show that post-Newtonian corrections are important in beyond Horndeski theories and therefore the bounds coming from previous analyses should be revisited., Comment: 13 pages, five figures.
