1. THE ORIGIN OF BRIGHTNESS VARIATIONS IN BC CYGNI

Abstract: The variability of the type C semi-regular (SRC) M3.5 Ia supergiant variable BC Cyg is examined with reference to measurements of its photographic B magnitude derived from 866 archival plates in the Harvard and Sternberg collections and eye estimates of its visual V magnitude made by members of the AAVSO. The star is the brightest member of the cluster Berkeley 87, so it has a well established reddening, distance, and age. BC Cyg exhibits interesting features in its century-long baseline of brightness variations that relate to pulsation and evolution: an 0m.5 increase in (B) over the past century in conjunction with a decrease in pulsation period from ~ 700d to 687d. Associated colour changes imply that the star is hottest when brightest visually or photographically, coolest when faintest visually or photographically. Despite the increase in (B), the star's luminosity appears to have decreased over the past century, presumably as a result of stellar evolutionary effects.

2. A NEW MAPPING OF THE CEPHEID INSTABILITY STRIP

Abstract: Results are presented for a new mapping of the instability strip for Milky Way Cepheids based upon eld reddenings for 40 stars (mainly members of open clusters and associations), color excesses for 53 stars obtained from reddening-independent systems, and photometric reddenings for 200 additional Cepheids tied to the new system. The data provide new insights into features of the Cepheid instability strip and indicate that photometric reddenings for Cepheids are generally not of high accuracy.

Abstract: Analyses of Cepheid period changes using O-C diagrams are used to establish the direction of evolution of individual stars through the instability strip. The superposition of random in period on O-C data is less easy to interpret. Such chaotic behavior is a standard feature of Mira and RV Tauri variables according to the work of Percy, but has not been examined in detail for Cepheids. Unlike the situation for cooler classes of pulsators, most Cepheids do not exhibit random in period. Binarity plays only a minor role in the scatter in O-C data.

Abstract: SRC variables are M supergiants, precursorsto Type II supernovae, that vary in brightnesswith moderately regular periods of order 100–1000days. Although identified as pulsating stars that obeytheir own period-luminosity relation, few have beenexamined in enough detail to follow the temperatureand spectral changes that they undergo during theirlong cycles. The present study examines such changesfor several SRC variables revealed by CCD spectraobtained at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory(DAO) during 2005–2009, as well as by archival spectrafrom the DAO (and elsewhere) for some stars fromthe 1960s to 1980s, and Cambridge radial velocityspectrometer measures for Betelgeuse. Described hereis our classification procedure and information onthe spectral type and radial velocity changes in threeof the stars. The results provide insights into thepulsation mechanism in M supergiants.

Abstract: Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T19:52:06Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-03-18 Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural clines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale. Abstract: Magmatic-hydrothermal systems, especially those causing the formation of tungsten deposits, may be enriched in boron, as is suggested by the presence of hydrothermal tourmaline. This study examines the boron and metal (including tungsten) concentrations of quartz-hosted fluid inclusions in the Lened W-(Be) deposit of the Canadian Cordillera and resolves (i) the analytical challenges involved during fluid salinity calculations of B-rich fluids and (ii) the relationship between fluid chemical composition and ore-forming processes involved at Lened. The aqueous fluid inclusions from this study have high CO2 and boron contents, indicated by the presence of a carbonic phase and sassolite crystals (H3BO3) in fluid inclusions. The boron content of the aqueous liquid phase (0.5 wt. %) was determined using microthermometric and Raman spectroscopic analyses. Boron was judged the most appropriate internal standard for quantifying the LA-ICP-MS data from these inclusions after calculation of salinity in the H2O-NaCl-H3BO3 system (3.5 to 5 wt. % NaCleq). Trace element data of the fluids show relatively high concentrations of Li (40 to 474 ppm), Al (56 to 1003 ppm), As (36 to 490 ppm) and Cs (68 to 296 ppm); and lower concentrations of Rb (3.6 to 77 ppm), Sr (0.4 to 23 ppm), Sb (1 to 32 ppm), Ba (0.6 to 163 ppm), Mg (6.9 to 7.6 ppm) and other metals, such as Be (2.4 to 10.2 ppm), W (2.4 to 27 ppm) and Cu (5.1 to 73 ppm). The high Cs and Li concentrations suggest a magmatic origin of the metals, while the moderate concentrations in Sr and Ba are indicative of fluid-rock interaction with the surrounding limestone. The presence of sassolite suggests that these fluids were highly acidic. The neutralization of this fluid through interaction with the surrounding limestone is the most probable trigger for scheelite precipitation. The presence of such high boron content in the magmatic fluid at Lened indicates the potential role in the enrichment of the source melt before fluid exsolution., Geosciences, 12 (6), ISSN:2076-3263

Abstract: We constrain the rest-frame FUV (1546\AA), NUV (2345\AA) and U-band (3690\AA) luminosity functions (LFs) and luminosity densities (LDs) with unprecedented precision from $z\sim0.2$ to $z\sim3$ (FUV, NUV) and $z\sim2$ (U-band). Our sample of over 4.3 million galaxies, selected from the CFHT Large Area $U$-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and HyperSuprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) data lets us probe the very faint regime (down to $M_\mathrm{FUV},M_\mathrm{NUV},M_\mathrm{U} \simeq -15$ at low redshift) while simultaneously detecting very rare galaxies at the bright end down to comoving densities $1$ it is due to the evolution of both $M^\star_{UV}$ and the characteristic number density $\phi^\star_{UV}$. In contrast, the U-band LF has an excess of faint galaxies and is fitted with a double-Schechter form; $M^\star_\mathrm{U}$, both $\phi^\star_\mathrm{U}$ components, and the bright-end slope evolve throughout $0.2, Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures (26 pages, 18 figures including the Appendix). Abstract: We use deep and wide imaging data from the CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) to constrain the ionizing radiation (Lyman Continuum; LyC) escape fraction from AGNs at $z \sim 3 - 4$. For 94 AGNs with spectroscopic redshifts at $3.3 < z < 4.0$, we use their U-band / i-band flux ratios to estimate LyC transmission of individual AGNs. The distribution of their LyC transmission shows values lower than the range of LyC transmission values for IGM of the same redshift range, which suggests that LyC escape fraction of AGNs at $z>3.3$ is considerably lower than unity in most cases. We do not find any trend in LyC transmission values depending on their UV luminosities. Based on the photometry of stacked images we find the average flux ratio of LyC and non-ionizing UV photons escaping from the objects $(f_{LyC}/f_{UV})^{out} = 0.182 \pm 0.043$ for AGNs at $3.3, Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: International audience; This paper investigates the dynamics of institutional development and co-management performance in small-scale fisheries. The study covers different contexts and spatial and temporal scales, for nine case studies in the South Pacific. In these cases, new co-management institutions were intentionally set up from 2008 to 2016 through fishery policy intervention to address over-exploitation problems of sea cucumber resources. This was carried out in a process of adaptive experimentation, based on a collaborative and problem-solving approach to governance, and a context-based vision of sustainability issues. In order to quantitatively and empirically assess change in governance within and between cases, a multidimensional analytical framework of governance performance is developed. A set of governance performance criteria is defined and the criteria are scored using data from an institutional diagnosis of the cases, throughout the research period. Ten out of eleven criteria were positively impacted by the co-management interventions. Three institutional development trajectories can be identified for the fishery co-management building process, involving a range of gradual and abrupt changes. Consolidation of the institutional changes achieved by the interventions is required to successfully develop the resilience of the fishing systems to multiple stresses. This empirical study provides a methodology for systematically assessing institutional dynamics in fisheries, and in particular the crafting and sustaining of co-management regimes in small-scale fisheries. The approach could potentially be applied to other complex social-ecological systems.

Abstract: We study the environments of a sample of 61 extremely rare z~1.6 Ultra-Massive Passively Evolving Galaxies (UMPEGs: stellar masses M_stars >10^11.5 M_sun) which -- based on clustering analysis presented in Cheema et al. (2020) -- appear to be associated with very massive (M_halo ~ 10^14.1 h^-1 M_sun) dark matter halos that are likely to be the progenitors of z~0 massive (Coma- and Virgo-like) galaxy clusters. We find that UMPEGs on average have fewer than one satellite galaxy with mass ratio M_sat : M_UMPEG >~ 1:5 (i.e., M_sat >~ 10^10.8 M_sun) within 0.5 Mpc; the large mass gap that we observe between the typical UMPEG and its most massive satellite implies that the z~1.6 UMPEGs assembled through major mergers. Using observed satellite counts with merger timescales from the literature, we estimate the growth rate due to mergers with mass ratio of >~ 1:4 to be ~13% Gyr^-1 (with a ~2x systematic uncertainty). This relatively low growth rate is unlikely to significantly affect the shape of the massive end of the stellar mass function, whose evolution must instead be driven by the quenching of new cohorts of ultra-massive star-forming galaxies. However, this growth rate is high enough that, if sustained to z~0, the typical z~1.6 M_UMPEG=10^11.6 M_sun UMPEG can grow into a M_stars~10^12 M_sun brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of a present-day massive galaxy cluster. Our observations favour a scenario in which our UMPEGs are main-branch progenitors of some of the present-day BCGs that have first assembled through major mergers at high redshifts and grown further through (likely minor) merging at later times., accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Abstract: Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that, in some cases, can harbor powerful relativistic jets. One of them, PKS 2004-447, shows gamma-ray emission, and underwent its first recorded multifrequency flare in 2019. However, past studies revealed that in radio this source can be classified as a compact steep-spectrum source (CSS), suggesting that, unlike other gamma-ray sources, the relativistic jets of PKS 2004-447 have a large inclination with respect to the line of sight. We present here a set of spectroscopic observations of this object, aimed at carefully measuring its black hole mass and Eddington ratio, determining the properties of its emission lines, and characterizing its long term variability. We find that the black hole mass is $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, and the Eddington ratio is 0.08. Both values are within the typical range of NLS1s. The spectra also suggest that the 2019 flare was caused mainly by the relativistic jet, while the accretion disk played a minor role during the event. Abstract: We propose a new simple construction of hyperbolas, via a string passing through the foci, that shares properties of the classic "gardener's ellipse" construction and Perrault's construction of the tractrix as the locus of a dragged point, subject to frictional forces, at the end of a link of fixed length. We show that a frictional device such as this, with a single frictional element, traces the same locus regardless of the friction model, provided only that this is isotropic. This allows the introduction of a "purely geometrical" principle for tractional constructions more general than that of Huygens (1693).

Abstract: Using deep (11.2hr) VLT/MUSE data from the MEGAFLOW survey, we report the first detection of extended MgII emission from a galaxy's halo that is probed by a quasar sightline. The MgII $\lambda\lambda$ 2796,2803 emission around the $z = 0.702$ galaxy ($\log(M_*/\mathrm{M_\odot}) = 10.05^{+0.15}_{-0.11}$) is detected out to $\approx$25 kpc from the central galaxy and covers $1.0\times10^3$ kpc$^2$ above a surface brightness of $14\times10^{-19} \mathrm{erg} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}\,\mathrm{arcsec}^{-2}$ ($2 \sigma$; integrated over 1200 km s$^{-1}$ =19A and averaged over $1.5 \;\mathrm{arcsec}^2$). The MgII emission around this highly inclined galaxy ($\simeq$75 deg) is strongest along the galaxy's projected minor axis, consistent with the MgII gas having been ejected from the galaxy into a bi-conical structure. The quasar sightline, which is aligned with the galaxy's minor axis, shows strong MgII $\lambda$2796 absorption (EW$_0$ = 1.8A) at an impact parameter of 39kpc from the galaxy. Comparing the kinematics of both the emission and the absorption - probed with VLT/UVES -, to the expectation from a simple toy model of a bi-conical outflow, we find good consistency when assuming a relatively slow outflow ($v_\mathrm{out}= 130\;\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$). We investigate potential origins of the extended MgII emission using simple toy models. With continuum scattering models we encounter serious difficulties in explaining the luminosity of the MgII halo and in reconciling density estimates from emission and absorption. Abstract: Multi-wavelength monitoring of Mrk 335 with Swift between 2007-2019 are used to construct annual spectral energy distributions and track year-to-year changes. Non-contemporaneous archival data prior to 2007 are used to build a bright state SED. In this work, the changes are examined and quantified to build the foundation for future SED modelling. The yearly SEDs trace a downward trend on the average, with the X-ray portion varying significantly and acquiring further lower values in the past two years when compared to the optical/UV portion of SED. The bolometric Eddington ratios derived using optical/UV to X-ray SEDs and the calculated X-ray luminosities show a gradual decrease over the monitoring period. Changes in the parameters over time are examined. Principal component analysis suggests that the primary variability is in the X-ray properties of Mrk 335. When looking at the broader picture of Mrk 335 and its behaviour, the X-rays, accounting most of the variability in the 13-year data, are possibly driven by physical processes related to the corona or absorption whereas the modest optical-UV variations suggest their origin within the accretion disc. These results are consistent with the previous interpretation of Mrk 335 using the timing analyses on the monitoring data and spectral modelling of deep observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Abstract: We investigate the connection between X-ray and radio-loud AGNs and the physical properties of their evolved and massive host galaxies, focussing on the mass-related quenching channel followed by $\mathcal{M}^\star (\simeq 10^{10.6} M_\odot)$ galaxies in the rest-frame NUVrK colour diagram at $0.2 < z < 0.5$. While our results confirm that (1) radio-loud AGNs are predominantly hosted by already-quenched and very massive ($M_*>10^{11}M_\odot$) galaxies, ruling out their feedback as a primary driver of $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxy quenching, we found that (2) X-ray AGNs affected by heavy obscuration of their soft X-ray emission are mostly hosted by $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxies that are in the process of quenching. This is consistent with a quenching scenario that involves mergers of (gas-poor) $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxies $after$ the onset of the quenching process, i.e., a scenario where $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxy mergers are not the cause but rather an aftermath of the quenching mechanism(s). Abstract: We use a 27.6 deg$^2$ survey to measure the clustering of $gzK_s$-selected quiescent galaxies at $z\sim1.6$, focusing on ultra-massive quiescent galaxies. We find that $z\sim1.6$ Ultra-Massive Passively Evolving Galaxies (UMPEGs), which have $K_s(AB)\sim 10^{11.4}M_{\odot}$ and mean $$ = $10^{11.5}M_{\odot}$), cluster more strongly than any other known galaxy population at high redshift. Comparing their correlation length, $r_0 = 29.77 \pm 2.75$ $ h^{-1}$Mpc, with the clustering of dark matter halos in the Millennium XXL N-body simulation suggests that these $z\sim1.6$ UMPEGs reside in dark matter halos of mass $M_{h}\sim10^{14.1}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$. Such very massive $z\sim1.6$ halos are associated with the ancestors of $z\sim0$ massive galaxy clusters such as the Virgo and Coma clusters. Given their extreme stellar masses and lack of companions with comparable mass, we surmise that these UMPEGs could be the already-quenched central massive galaxies of their (proto)clusters. We conclude that with only a modest amount of further growth in their stellar mass, $z\sim1.6$ UMPEGs could be the progenitors of some of the massive central galaxies of present-day massive galaxy clusters observed to be already very massive and quiescent near the peak epoch of the cosmic star formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: We present results of temporal and spectral analyses on four XMM-Newton EPIC pn observations of IRAS 17020+4544, a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy with evidence of a radio jet. Analysis of the light curves reveals that this radio-loud source does not behave like the bulk population of its radio-quiet counterparts. A trend of spectral hardening with increased flux is found. Variability is found to increase with energy, though it decreases as the spectrum hardens. The first 40 ks of the most recent observation behave uniquely among the epochs, exhibiting a softer spectral state than at any other time. Possible non-stationarity at low energies is found, with no such effect present at higher energies, suggesting at least two distinct spectral components. A reverberation signature is confirmed, with the lag-frequency, lag-energy, and covariance spectra changing significantly during the soft-state epoch. The temporal analysis suggests a variable power-law in the presence of a reflection component, thus motivating such a fit for the 0.3-10 keV EPIC pn spectra from all epochs. We find an acceptable spectral fit using the timing-motivated parameters and report the detection of a broad Fe K emission line, requiring an additional model component beyond the reflection spectrum. We discuss links between this source and other narrow-line Seyfert 1 sources that show evidence of jet activity, finding similarities among this currently very limited sample of interesting objects., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 19 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: We present the result of a search for orphan Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows in the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) COSMOS survey. There is extensive theoretical and observational evidence suggesting that GRBs are collimated jets; the direct observation of orphan GRB afterglows would further support this model. An optimal survey strategy is designed by coupling the PS1 survey with the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. The PS1 COSMOS survey, one of the survey fields in the PS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1/MDS), searches a field of 7 deg$^2$ from December 2011 to January 2014, reaching a limiting magnitude R $\sim$ 23. The dense cadence of PS1/MDS is crucial for identifying transients, and the deep magnitude reached by the HSC survey (R $\sim$ 26) is important for evaluating potential GRB hosts. A transient classification method is employed to select potential orphan GRB afterglow candidates. After a thorough analysis of the transient and host galaxy properties, we conclude that there are no candidates in this survey field. Abstract: This article examines how a least developed country-based social business first creates operational capabilities (OCs) and then, over time, builds innovative capabilities (ICs) to fulfil a social need, be self-sustainable and achieve inclusive innovation. This relationship is examined in Bangladesh's Grameen Danone Foods Limited (GDFL) by integrating the technological capability and inclusive innovation theoretical frameworks and by using data gathered through extensive fieldwork. Broadly, our findings show how GDFL built and accumulated basic and intermediate ICs to undertake innovative activities in all areas of operation. Specifically, our findings scrutinize the process in which a social business develops and organizes its resources to initially build OCs and engage in the creation of ICs through various learning mechanisms to deliver inclusive innovation. From this process, we also observe a set of unpredicted positive spillovers to the community, which expands the inclusiveness effect. The findings also suggest that having a social orientation, triggers the use of different resources from within and outside the firm to achieve inclusive innovation. We conclude by discussing the study's implications for scholars, policy-makers and managers of multinational's social businesses. We also highlight future research areas, and crucially those related to key emerging conceptual limitations of inclusive innovation and development.

Abstract: We use the statistics of the VIPERS survey to investigate the relation between the surface mean stellar mass density Sigma=Mstar/(2*pi*Re^2) of massive passive galaxies (MPGs, Mstar>10^11 Msun) and their environment in the redshift range 0.52*10^11 Msun, we find an excess of MPGs with low Sigma and a deficit of high-Sigma MPGs in the densest regions wrt other environments. We interpret this result as due to the migration of some high-Sigma MPGs (0.8 migrate to the MPG population. Here, we investigate the Sigma-delta relation of MSFGs at z>0.8 and find that it is consistent within 1 sigma with that of low-Sigma MPGs at z0.8 are consistent in terms of number and environment with being the progenitors of low-Sigma MPGs at z, Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: We introduce the largest to date survey of massive quiescent galaxies at redshift z~1.6. With these data, which cover 27.6 deg^2, we can find significant numbers of very rare objects such as ultra-massive quiescent galaxies that populate the extreme massive end of the galaxy mass function, or dense environments that are likely to become present-day massive galaxy clusters. In this paper, the first in a series, we apply our gzK adaptation of the BzK technique to select our z~1.6 galaxy catalog and then study the quiescent galaxy stellar mass function with good statistics over M_stars ~ 10^10.2 - 10^11.7 M_sun --- a factor of 30 in mass --- including 60 ultra-massive z~1.6 quiescent galaxies with M_stars > 10^11.5 M_sun. We find that the stellar mass function of quiescent galaxies at z~1.6 is well represented by the Schechter function over this large mass range. This suggests that the mass quenching mechanism observed at lower redshifts must have already been well established by this epoch, and that it is likely due to a single physical mechanism over a wide range of mass. This close adherence to the Schechter shape also suggests that neither merging nor gravitational lensing significantly affect the observed quenched population. Finally, comparing measurements of M* parameters for quiescent and star-forming populations (ours and from the literature), we find hints of an offset (M*_SF > M*_PE), that could suggest that the efficiency of the quenching process evolves with time., Accepted for publication by MNRAS

Abstract: Soil is one of the most biodiverse terrestrial habitats. Yet, we lack an integrative conceptual framework for understanding the patterns and mechanisms driving soil biodiversity. One of the underlying reasons for our poor understanding of soil biodiversity patterns relates to whether key biodiversity theories (historically developed for aboveground and aquatic organisms) are applicable to patterns of soil biodiversity. Here, we present a systematic literature review to investigate whether and how key biodiversity theories (species-energy relationship, theory of island biogeography, metacommunity theory, niche theory and neutral theory) can explain observed patterns of soil biodiversity. We then discuss two spatial compartments nested within soil at which biodiversity theories can be applied to acknowledge the scale-dependent nature of soil biodiversity. Abstract: International audience; Protracted and complex fluid histories the norm in orogenic-type gold deposits as revealed by LA ICP-MS sulfide mapping Kontak, Daniel dkontak@laurentian.ca, Harquail School of Earth Sciences, Sudbury, ON P3E2C6 Hydrothermal ore deposits are the culmination of many processes, commencing with generation of fluids, metal transport and mineral precipitation. This process can involve mixing of fluids, in addition to metals sourced from different reservoirs. The convention of inferring elemental enrichment and associations using bulk methods is limited with such data, although ore petrology provides insight into elemental paragenesis. The advent of in situ LA-ICP-MS analysis provides the means to readily analyse many elements at various detection limits wt. % to ppb) and apply spatial resolution (10s μm) in a way not possible previously. Application of this procedure to pyrite and arsenopyrite has increased in recent years and with it the realization of a complex chemistry in ore systems. Here LA-ICP-MS data from a wide variety of orogenic-type gold settings is used to illustrate the power of the method and assess generalizations in regards to deposit formation based on: 1) elemental mapping; 2) generating an elemental paragenesis for the mapped sulfides; 3) conversion of the data to time slice domains (TSD) or semi-quantitative concentrations which provides 10s of thousands of analyses in small domains to assess elemental trends and processes; and 4) statistical treatment of such data. Application of the latter protocol to deposit samples reveals a general paragenesis of: 1) early enrichment of Co, Ni, As ± Au, Ag, Cu, Te, In, Sb, Se, Mo; 2) later overgrowths or fracture controlled Bi, Sb, Te, Pb, Zn, Au, Ag; and 3) a late Ti, Mo and W stage. Relevant to Au are: 1) its increase through the paragenesis from 10s to 100s ppm; 2) late occurrence as VG with lower Au:Ag ratios; and 3) variable elemental associations. These data indicate a protracted elemental paragenesis, remobilization of early Au by later fluids, and coupled dissolution-precipitation reactions as important processes in these deposits.

Abstract: The Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) will map the northern high Galactic latitude sky in the $u$-band ("CFIS-u", 10,000$\, {\rm deg^2}$) and in the $r$-band ("CFIS-r", 5,000$\, {\rm deg^2}$), enabling a host of stand-alone science investigations, and providing some of the ground-based data necessary for photometric redshift determination for the Euclid mission. In this first contribution we present the $u$-band component of the survey, describe the observational strategy, and discuss some first highlight results, based on approximately one third of the final area. We show that the Galactic anticenter structure is distributed continuously along the line of sight, out to beyond 20 kpc, and possesses a metallicity distribution that is essentially identical to that of the outer disk sampled by APOGEE. This suggests that it is probably a buckled disk of old metal-rich stars, rather than a stream or a flare. We also discuss the future potential for CFIS-u in discovering star-forming dwarf galaxies around the Local Group, the characterization of the white dwarf and blue straggler population of the Milky Way, as well as its sensitivity to low-surface brightness structures in external galaxies., 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: Drawing on and extending institutional logics and resource dependence theories, this paper posits that for cross-sector partnerships to survive, organizations need to share compatible institutional logics, but depend less on each other's resources. Asymmetrical cross-sector partnerships may lead to a breakup if organizations are forced to operate under incompatible institutional logics. The findings of this study show that the challenges posed by incompatible logics of partners could be mitigated by the degree of resource interdependence between organizations. Capturing the effects of context and transactions on the actors' strategic behavior, the findings, based on dataset of project-level partnership ties between 1312 organizations in the carbon-offset market, support these hypotheses. The paper concludes by discussing implications of organizations' responses to keep acting under or reinterpreting existing institutional logics in asymmetrical cross-sector relationships. Abstract: International audience; An asymmetric meso-H dipyrrin featuring a conjugated terminal alkyne substituent was converted to its corresponding difluoro boron complex, and the extent of π-conjugation was extended using Sonogashira cross-coupling. Treatment of the alkyne-substituted dipyrrin with BF 3 ·OEt 2 and NEt 3 revealed the reactivity of the conjugated terminal alkyne toward Lewis-activated electrophilic substitution and led to the isolation of F-BODIPYs bearing terminal bromovinyl and enol substituents.

Abstract: The low-energy identification station at SPIRAL (Systeme de Production d'Ions Radioactifs Acceleres en Ligne) has been upgraded for studying the β decays of short-lived radioactive isotopes and to perform high-precision half-life and branching-ratio measurements for superallowed Fermi and isospin T= 1 / 2 mirror β decays. These new capabilities, combined with an existing Paul trap setup for measurements of β–ν angular-correlation coefficients, provide a powerful facility for investigating fundamental properties of the electroweak interaction through nuclear β decays. A detailed description of the design study, construction, and first results obtained from an in-beam commissioning experiment on the β+ decays 14 O and 17F are presented.

Abstract: The electron density distribution ρ(r) contains the information needed to quantitatively analyze bonding interactions between atoms, exhibiting short, medium or long inter-nuclear distances. Atom–atom bonding interactions, the orientation of molecules in the space and crystal structure are all inter-determined., Professor Dunitz questions the usefulness of ascribing crystalline structural stability to individual atom–atom intermolecular interactions viewed as bonding (hence stabilizing) whenever linked by a bond path. An alternative view is expressed in the present essay that articulates the validity and usefulness of the bond path concept in a crystallographic and crystal engineering context.

Abstract: Consider the set of minimal factorizations of the canonical full cycle in the symmetric group on n + 1\ud symbols. In 2002, Biane found a remarkably simple bijection from this set to the set of parking functions of length n;\ud the bijection maps a factorization to the sequence consisting of the smallest element from each transposition. Thus,\ud it is utterly trivial to find the image of a factorization in this map, but reversing this map requires much more work.\ud Furthermore, as far as parking functions are concerned, it appears that the largest element in each transposition can\ud be discarded. We show, however, that the sequence given by the largest element of each transposition also displays\ud some interesting properties. In particular, the natural area statistics on this sequence and the parking function together\ud correspond to two natural statistics on trees: the inversion number (this is well known) and the non-inversion number.\ud This allows us to present a bivariate generating series, which is a natural generalization of the univariate inversion\ud series. We also give a number of related results.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we compare observed, empirical, and modelled solar limb profiles and discuss their potential use to derive physical properties of the solar atmosphere. The PHOENIX, SolMod3D, and COSI radiative transfer codes as well as VAL-C models are used to calculate the solar limb shape under different assumptions. The main properties of each model are shown. The predicted limb shape as a function of wavelength for different features on the solar disk, such as quiet Sun, sunspots, and faculae, is investigated. These models provide overall consistent limb shapes with some discrepancies that are discussed here in terms of differences in solar atmosphere models, opacities, and the algorithms used to derive the solar limb profile. Our analysis confirms that the most common property of all models is limb shapes that are much steeper than what is observed, or predicted by the available empirical models. Furthermore, we have investigated the role of the Fraunhofer lines within the spectral domain used for the solar limb measurements. Our results show that the presence of the Fraunhofer lines significantly displaces the limb inflection point from its position estimated assuming only the photospheric continuum. The PICARD satellite, launched on 15 June 2010, will provide measurements of the limb shape at several wavelengths. This work shows that the precision of these measurements allows for discrimination among the available models.

Abstract: International audience; The changing of the nuclear shells for light, neutron-rich nuclei, and the single-particle nature of 26Na, has been explored by studying 25Na(d, p)26Na in inverse kinematics, using a beam of 25Na ions at 5 MeV per nucleon, provided by the ISAC-II facility at TRIUMF, Vancouver. Charged particles were detected with a highly-segmented silicon array that surrounded the 0.5 mg/cm2 (CD2)n target. Gamma rays from the recoiling 26Na nucleus were detected using eight Compton-suppressed HPGe clover detectors. Recoil tagging was provided by an in-beam scintillation foil, downstream of the germanium array. A novel technique of utilising pγ- and pγγ-gating to extract proton angular distributions from states populated close in energy was employed with success. New states in 26Na that are populated directly have been identified, using γ-decay patterns. Shell model calculations for comparison to experimental results are ongoing, using different model bases.

Abstract: WOS: 000344141500013, Recently the number of main-sequence and subgiant stars exhibiting solar-like oscillations that are resolved into individual mode frequencies has increased dramatically. While only a few such data sets were available for detailed modeling just a decade ago, the Kepler mission has produced suitable observations for hundreds of new targets. This rapid expansion in observational capacity has been accompanied by a shift in analysis and modeling strategies to yield uniform sets of derived stellar properties more quickly and easily. We use previously published asteroseismic and spectroscopic data sets to provide a uniform analysis of 42 solar-type Kepler targets from the Asteroseismic Modeling Portal. We find that fitting the individual frequencies typically doubles the precision of the asteroseismic radius, mass, and age compared to grid-based modeling of the global oscillation properties, and improves the precision of the radius and mass by about a factor of three over empirical scaling relations. Abstract: A vertex in G is said to dominate itself and its neighbors. A subset S of vertices is a dominating set if S dominates every vertex of G. A paired-dominating set is a dominating set whose induced subgraph contains a perfect matching. The paired-domination number of a graph G, denoted by ? pr(G), is the minimum cardinality of a paired-dominating set in G. A subset S⊆V(G) is a double dominating set of G if S dominates every vertex of G at least twice. The minimum cardinality of a double dominating set of G is the double domination number ? ×2(G). A claw-free graph is a graph that does not contain K 1,3 as an induced subgraph. Chellali and Haynes (Util. Math. 67:161---171, 2005) showed that for every claw-free graph G, we have ? pr(G)≤? ×2(G). In this paper we extend this result by showing that for r?2, if G is a connected graph that does not contain K 1,r as an induced subgraph, then $\gamma_{\mathrm{pr}}(G)\le ( \frac{2r^{2}-6r+6}{r(r-1)} )\gamma_{\times2}(G)$ .
