Single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) network is a promising electrode material for bio detection. Unfortunately, the associations between their physical as well as chemical properties and observed electrochemical performance are not known. This hinders any systematic optimization of the network properties towards specific analytes. Here we present a consistent physicochemical and electrochemical characterization of differently treated SWCNT networks. The results unambiguously show that (i) even if the electrochemical properties of different electrodes are practically identical when assessed by surface insensitive outer sphere redox (OSR) probes their behavior with inner sphere redox (ISR) probes can be drastically different. Further, (ii) the choice of the modification method (structural, chemical, electrochemical) heavily depends on nature of the target analyte, which are typically ISR probes. Although, (iii) chemical changes in the carbon phase appeared to be minor, effects of different treatments on oxidation states of Fe appeared to have a strong effect on the electrochemical performance of the networks in the case of ISR probes.

Nanocellulose has emerged as a promising green dispersant for carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and there is an increasing trend in developing nanocellulose/CNT hybrid materials for electrochemical detection of various small molecules. However, there have been very few comprehensive studies investigating the role of nanocellulosic material properties upon the electroanalytical performance of the resultant hybrid electrodes. In this work, we demonstrate the influence of both nanocellulose functionalization and geometry, utilizing sulfated cellulose nanocrystals, sulfated cellulose nanofibers, and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers. Transmission electron microscopy tomography enables direct visualization of the effect of nanocellulosic materials on the hybrid architectures. High resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy verifies that the chemical nature of CNTs in the different hybrids is unmodified. Electroanalytical performances of the different nanocellulose/CNT hybrid electrodes are critically evaluated using physiologically relevant biomolecules with different charge such as, dopamine (cationic), paracetamol (neutral), and uric acid (anionic). The hybrid electrode containing fibrillar nanocellulose geometry with a high degree of sulfate group functionalization provides the highest electroanalytical sensitivity and strongest enrichment towards all studied analytes. These results clearly demonstrate for the first time, the extent of tailorability upon the electroanalytical response of nanocellulose/CNT hybrid electrodes towards different biomolecules, offered simply by the choice of nanocellulosic materials.

Aside from band gap reduction, little is understood about the effect of the tin-for-lead substitution on the fundamental optical and optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites (MHPs), especially when transitioning from 3D to lower dimensional structures. Herein, we take advantage of the spectroscopic isolation of excitons in 2D MHPs to study the intrinsic differences between lead and tin MHPs. The exciton’s spectral fine structure indicates a larger polaron binding energy in tin MHPs. Additionally, the electroabsorption responses of the 2D MHPs demonstrates that tin MHPs have exciton binding energies 1.5–2× lower than that of their lead counterparts. Despite the lower binding energy, the excitons in tin MHPs are more Frenkel-like with small radii, small polarizabilities, and large dipole moments. These results are interpreted as consequences of small polaron formation and disorder-induced dipole moments. This work highlights the wide range of intrinsic differences between lead and tin MHPs as well as the complexity of excited states in these systems.

Understanding the role of oxygen vacancy–induced atomic and electronic structural changes to complex metal oxides during water-splitting processes is paramount to advancing the field of solar thermochemical hydrogen production (STCH). The formulation and confirmation of a mechanism for these types of chemical reactions necessitate a multifaceted experimental approach, featuring advanced structural characterization methods. Synchrotron X-ray techniques are essential to the rapidly advancing field of STCH in part due to properties such as high brilliance, high coherence, and variable energy that provide sensitivity, resolution, and rapid data acquisition times required for the characterization of complex metal oxides during water-splitting cycles. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is commonly used for determining the structures and phase purity of new materials synthesized by solid-state techniques and monitoring the structural integrity of oxides during water-splitting processes (e.g., oxygen vacancy–induced lattice expansion). X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an element-specific technique and is sensitive to local atomic and electronic changes encountered around metal coordination centers during redox. While in operando measurements are desirable, the experimental conditions required for such measurements (high temperatures, controlled oxygen partial pressures, and H2O) practically necessitate in situ measurements that do not meet all operating conditions or ex situ measurements. Here, we highlight the application of synchrotron X-ray scattering and spectroscopic techniques using both in situ and ex situ measurements, emphasizing the advantages and limitations of each method as they relate to water-splitting processes. The best practices are discussed for preparing quenched states of reduction and performing synchrotron measurements, which focus on XRD and XAS at soft (e.g., oxygen K-edge, transition metal L-edges, and lanthanide M-edges) and hard (e.g., transi

Carbonaceous nanomaterials can be a game changing materials in many technological fields, especially in electroanalytical applications. However, there is no consensus on the associations between the structure and electrochemical performance of these nanomaterials — even for the most basic electrochemical properties. This challenge stems from the fact that typically carbonaceous nanomaterials are obtained from various sources and not characterized properly. Therefore, to solve this deadlock we carry out systematic electrochemical characterization for a set of in-house fabricated as well as physicochemically thoroughly characterized carbon nanomaterials. We will then proceed to establish structure — performance associations for these materials. In addition, we will highlight how sensitive the electrochemical performance of these materials can be to small changes in their structural properties. Further, we emphasize the lack of correlation between electrochemical performance of electrode materials as determined using outer sphere redox (OSR) and inner sphere redox (ISR) probes the latter being highly analyte specific. As a first consistent set of electrochemical data obtained by using well characterized carbonaceous nanomaterials, this work will provide solid basis to expand the use of these materials in more complex electroanalytical as well as other applications.

Introduction: Contraceptives containing ethinylestradiol (EE) induce changes in the coagulation system and are associated with a risk of venous thromboembolism. However, studies comparing the effects of combined oral contraceptives containing EE and low-potency estrogens (ie, estradiol [E₂] and estradiol valerate [EV]) on coagulation biomarkers are limited. This study represents secondary outcomes of a randomized trial comparing combined oral contraceptives containing EV + dienogest (DNG), EE + DNG, and DNG alone on selected coagulation biomarkers. We could compare the specific effects of the different estrogen components owing to the inclusion of preparations containing the same progestin. Material and methods: We enrolled 59 healthy, 18- to 35-year-old, non-smoking women, of whom three discontinued. The participants were randomly allocated to 9 weeks of continuous treatment with EV 2 mg + DNG 2–3 mg (n = 20), EE 0.03 mg + DNG 2 mg (n = 20), or DNG 2 mg (n = 19). Blood samples were collected at baseline and after 9 weeks. We assessed coagulation in vitro by thrombin generation using the Calibrated Automated Thrombogram. Thrombin generation was evaluated by lag time, time to thrombin peak, thrombin peak, and endogenous thrombin potential in response to tissue factor (1 pm). In vivo coagulation assessment was based on levels of prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 (F1 + 2) (thrombin generation) and D-dimer (fibrin turnover). Clinical trial registration: NCT02352090. Results: Lag time and time to thrombin peak remained unaltered after exposure to EV + DNG, whereas EE + DNG shortened both lag time (mean percentage change −24%, 95% confidence interval [CI] −32% to −15%; p < 0.01) and time to thrombin peak (−26%, 95% CI −37% to −16%; p < 0.01). EV + DNG induced lower thrombin peak and endogenous thrombin potential than EE + DNG (peak; +45%, 95% CI 22%–67% vs +147%,95% CI 96%–198%; p < 0.01, and endogenous thrombin potential; +26%, 95% CI 15%–38% vs +64%, 95% CI 5

Understanding how various redox activities evolve and distribute in disordered rocksalt oxides (DRX) can advance insights into manipulating materials properties for achieving stable, high-energy batteries. Herein, the authors present how the reaction kinetics and spatial distribution of redox activities are governed by the particle size of DRX materials. The size-dependent electrochemical performance is attributed to the distinct cationic and anionic reaction kinetics at different sizes, which can be tailored to achieve optimal capacity and stability. Overall, the local charged domains in DRX particles display random heterogeneity caused by the isotropic delithiation pathways. Owing to the kinetic limitation, the micron-sized particles exhibit a holistic “core-shell” charge distribution, whereas sub-micron particles show more uniform redox reactions throughout the particles and ensembles. Sub-micron DRX particles exhibit increasing anionic redox activities yet inferior cycling stability. In summary, engineering particle size can effectively modulate how cationic and anionic redox activities evolve and distribute in DRX materials.

In the spinel oxide cathode family, LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) shows a high operating voltage (≈4.7 V vs Li/Li⁺) and excellent Li-ion mobility with stable 3D conducting channels. Ni/Mn cation disordered and ordered phases usually coexist in LNMO materials, and they have distinct structural and electrochemical properties, resulting in different battery performances for LNMO materials with different phase compositions. Identifying the correlation between phase compositions and electrochemical properties is of significance to the improvement of battery performance and understanding of degradation mechanisms. Herein, the disordered/ordered phase compositions in LNMO materials are tailored by post-annealing strategies and their impacts on electrochemical performance and degradation mechanisms from the surface to the bulk are systematically investigated. The ordered phase increases rapidly as Mn³⁺ is oxidized to Mn⁴⁺ through a post-annealing process. LNMO with an intermediate fraction of disordered and ordered phases gives rise to improved cycling stability. This article further reports that a high ordered phase fraction can preferentially protect Ni from dissolution during cycling. However, these results suggest that the transition metal dissolution and surface structural change of LNMO do not exhibit a direct correlation with cycling stability. These results indicate the capacity fading mainly correlates with the bulk structural distortion, leading to decreased Li-ion kinetics.

Intercalative deionization (IDI) uses two cation intercalation electrodes separated by an anion exchange membrane in a symmetric cell design that has the potential to deliver electrochemically desalinated water in an energy- and water-efficient way. Here, we define and measure metrics to describe the performance and lifetime of IDI cells and compare them for NaCl and CaCl₂ feed solutions. With 20 mM NaCl, NiHCF/AEM/NiHCF flow cells achieve 10 mM average concentration change at a productivity of 20 l/h/m² and 5 mM average concentration change at 130 l/h/m². In both cases the cells are operated at a 3C current rate and consume ~30 Wh/m³ of energy. With 10 mM CaCl₂, the specific capacity and salt removal of IDI flow cells is ~4 times lower. NiHCF/NiHCF beaker cells with CaCl₂ electrolyte suffer from strong capacity fade, while the same cells with NaCl electrolyte achieve 500 cycles without any capacity fade. Our post-mortem analysis using X-ray diffraction, secondary electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and micro X-ray fluorescence mapping reveals that NiHCF dissolves upon repeated intercalation with Ca²⁺, releasing residual K⁺, Ni²⁺ and Fe(CN)₆³, which precipitates as a crystalline decomposition product on the electrodes. This side reaction deprives the active material NiHCF of charge compensating Fe, and thus accounts for the observed capacity fade.

Connecting a material’s surface chemistry with its electrocatalytic performance is one of the major questions in analytical electrochemistry. This is especially important in many sensor applications where analytes from complex media need to be measured. Unfortunately, today this connection is still largely missing except perhaps for the most simple ideal model systems. Here we present an approach that can be used to obtain insights about this missing connection and apply it to the case of carbon nanomaterials. In this paper we show that by combining advanced computational techniques augmented by machine learning methods with x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electrochemical measurements, it is possible to obtain a deeper understanding of the correlation between local surface chemistry and electrochemical performance. As a test case we show how by computationally assessing the growth of amorphous carbon (a-C) thin films at the atomic level, we can create computational structural motifs that may in turn be used to deconvolute the XAS data from the real samples resulting in local chemical information. Then, by carrying out electrochemical measurements on the same samples from which x-ray spectra were measured and that were further characterized computationally, it is possible to gain insight into the interplay between the local surface chemistry and electrochemical performance. To demonstrate this methodology, we proceed as follows: after assessing the basic electrochemical properties of a-C films, we investigate the effect of short HNO3 treatment on the sensitivity of these electrodes towards an inner sphere redox probe dopamine to gain knowledge about the influence of altered surface chemistry to observed electrochemical performance. Background: Targeted routine antenatal anti-D prophylaxis was introduced to the national prophylaxis program in Finland in late 2013. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence, time-points, and risk factors for Rhesus D immunization after the implementation of routine antenatal anti-D prophylaxis, in all women in Finland with antenatal anti-D antibodies detected in 2014–2017. Material and methods: In a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study, the incidence, time-points, and risk factors of anti-D immunizations were analyzed. Information on antenatal screening was obtained from the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service database, and obstetric data from hospital records and the Finnish Medical Birth Register. Results: The study included a total of 228 women (197 with complete data for all pregnancies). After the implementation of routine antenatal anti-D prophylaxis, the prevalence of pregnancies with anti-D antibodies decreased from 1.52% in 2014 to 0.88% in 2017, and the corresponding incidence of new immunizations decreased from 0.33% to 0.10%. Time-points for detection of new anti-D antibodies before and after 2014 were the first screening sample at 8–12 weeks of gestation in 52% vs 19%, the second sample at 24–26 weeks in 20% vs 50%, and the third screening at 36 weeks in 28% vs 32%. Conclusions: The incidence of new anti-D immunizations decreased as expected after the implementation of routine antenatal anti-D prophylaxis. True failures are rare and they mainly occur when the prophylaxis is not given appropriately, suggesting a need for constant education of healthcare professionals on the subject.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been extensively investigated for various electroanalytical applications. As the properties of CNTs heavily depend on the fabrication conditions, it is expected that the electrochemical performance will also vary between CNTs from different processes. However, it is still not well known how the different synthesis conditions affect the electrochemical properties of CNTs. Thus, here we investigate the effect of synthesis rate on the physicochemical properties of CNT networks. Through extensive structural and chemical analysis, we show that the widely different synthesis rates, fast and slow, produced CNT networks with surprisingly similar properties. The only distinct differences were seen in the TEM tomography 3D reconstructions, where the faster synthesis produced a less dense network with larger bundle size. Moreover, minor changes were seen in the composition of Fe catalyst particles where the faster rate network mainly exhibited metallic Fe, whereas carbide and oxidized Fe phases were observed in the slower rate network. Although no changes were seen in the electron transfer kinetics with outer-sphere probes, it was clear that even these small changes in physicochemical properties affected the surface sensitive inner-sphere analytes. With slower synthesis rate i) sensitivity towards all analgesics, especially oxycodone, was enhanced and ii) oxidation potential of all analytes shifted to cathodic direction in comparison to higher synthesis rate. In the wider context, we propose that good quality CNTs can be fabricated rapidly in industrial scale for biosensing purposes. However, in electroanalytical applications properties of CNTs should be optimized for the analyte of interest.

In this work, we demonstrate how to identify and characterize the atomic structure of pristine and functionalized graphene materials from a combination of computational simulation of X-ray spectra, on the one hand, and computer-aided interpretation of experimental spectra, on the other. Despite the enormous scientific and industrial interest, the precise structure of these 2D materials remains under debate. As we show in this study, a wide range of model structures from pristine to heavily oxidized graphene can be studied and understood with the same approach. We move systematically from pristine to highly oxidized and defective computational models, and we compare the simulation results with experimental data. Comparison with experiments is valuable also the other way around; this method allows us to verify that the simulated models are close to the real samples, which in turn makes simulated structures amenable to several computational experiments. Our results provide ab initio semiquantitative information and a new platform for extended insight into the structure and chemical composition of graphene-based materials.

Successful deployment of carbon nanomaterials in many applications, such as sensing, energy storage, and catalysis, relies on the selection, synthesis, and tailoring of the surface properties. Predictive analysis of the behavior is difficult without detailed knowledge of the differences between various carbon nanomaterials and their surface functionalization, thus leaving the selection process to traditional trial-and-error work. The present characterization fills this knowledge gap for carbon nanomaterial surface properties with respect to chemical states and functionalization. We present an overview of the chemical trends that can be extracted from soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) spectra on an extended set of nonideal carbon nanomaterials as a function of sp2 bonded carbon and bond ordering. In particular, the surface chemical state, the presence of long-range order in the carbon matrix, and a qualitative estimation of the amount of oxygen and nitrogen and their respective functional group formation on the material surface, together with the detailed material fabrication parameters, are reported. The results expand our understanding of carbon nanomaterial functionalization, which can support material selection in practice, provided that the specifications of the application are known.

Biofouling imposes a significant threat for sensing probes used in vivo. Antifouling strategies commonly utilize a protective layer on top of the electrode but this may compromise performance of the electrode. Here, we investigated the effect of surface topography and chemistry on fouling without additional protective layers. We have utilized two different carbon materials; tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) and SU-8 based pyrolytic carbon (PyC) in their typical smooth thin film structure as well as with a nanopillar topography templated from black silicon. The near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectrum revealed striking differences in chemical functionalities of the surfaces. PyC contained equal amounts of ketone, hydroxyl and ether/epoxide groups, while ta-C contained significant amounts of carbonyl groups. Overall, oxygen functionalities were significantly increased on nanograss surfaces compared to the flat counterparts. Neither bovine serum albumin (BSA) or fetal bovine serum (FBS) fouling caused major effects on electron transfer kinetics of outer sphere redox (OSR) probe Ru(NH3)63+ on any of the materials. In contrast, negatively charged OSR probe IrCl62− kinetics were clearly affected by fouling, possibly due to the electrostatic repulsion between redox species and the anionically-charged proteins adsorbed on the electrode and/or stronger interaction of the proteins and positively charged surface. The OSR probe kinetics were less affected by fouling on PyC, probably due to conformational changes of proteins on the surface. Dopamine (DA) was tested as an inner sphere redox (ISR) probe and as expected, the kinetics were heavily dependent on the material; PyC had very fast electron transfer kinetics, while ta-C had sluggish kinetics. DA electron transfer kinetics were heavily affected on all surfaces by fouling (ΔEp increase 30—451%). Nonimmune causes, such as parvovirus, are less common. The procedure is associated with significant risks for complications, but without treatment the fetus either dies or suffers from permanent neurodevelopmental disability. Even though most children treated in utero survive, they have a higher risk for long-term neurological impairment. An effective antibody screening program and follow-up protocols for those at risk are essential. The best outcome is achieved when the treatment of fetal anemia is initiated on time. As intrauterine transfusions are nowadays infrequent, they should be centralized to large fetomaternal units where the expertise, high-quality results and operative skills are best maintained.

Metal catalysts are necessary for fabricating carbon nanotubes, but are often considered impurities in the end products, and arduous steps are used to remove catalyst residues from the nanotube structure. However, as metals can be electrocatalytic, instead of removing them we can utilize their role in detection of analgesics. Herein, we study the physicochemical properties of Fe‐containing single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and the effect of simple oxidative pretreatment on them. We show that a gentle anodic pretreatment i) increased the amount of oxidized Fe nanoparticles, most likely exhibiting phases Fe₃O₄ and Fe₂O₃ and ii) effectively removed disordered carbonaceous material from SWCNT bundles surfaces. Pretreatment had only a marginal effect on sensitivity towards analgesics. However, interestingly, selectivity of Fe‐SWCNTs towards paracetamol and morphine could be modified with pretreatment. Through this kind of in‐depth investigation, we can, to a certain extent, correlate various material properties of SWCNTs with the observed electrochemical performance. This approach allows us to evaluate what factors in SWCNTs truly affect the electrochemical detection of biomolecules.

Unmodified and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) modified tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films of 15 and 50 nm were investigated as potential in vivo sensor materials for the detection of dopamine (DA) in the presence of the main interferents, ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). The MWCNTs were grown directly on ta-C by chemical vapor deposition (designated as ta-C+CNT) and were characterized with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Electroanalytical sensitivity and selectivity were determined with cyclic voltammetry. Biocompatibility of the materials was assessed with cell cultures of mouse neural stem cells (mNSCs). The detection limits of DA for both ta-C and ta-C+CNT electrodes ranged from 40 to 85 nM, which are well within the required range for in vivo detection. The detection limits were lower for both ta-C and ta-C+CNT electrodes with 50 nm of ta-C compared to 15 nm. The ta-C electrodes showed a large dynamic linear range of 0.01–100 µM but could not resolve between the oxidation peaks of DA, AA and UA. Modification with MWCNTs, however, resulted in excellent selectivity and all three analytes could be detected simultaneously at physiologically relevant concentrations using cyclic voltammetry. Based on cell culture of mNSCs, both ta-C and ta-C+CNT exhibited good biocompatibility, demonstrating their potential as in vivo sensor materials for the detection of DA.

Pre-eclampsia is an idiopathic pregnancy disorder promoting morbidity and mortality to both mother and child. Delivery of the fetus is the only means to resolve severe symptoms. Women with pre-eclamptic pregnancies demonstrate increased risk for later life cardiovascular disease (CVD) and good evidence suggests these two syndromes share several risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms. To elucidate the genetic architecture of pre-eclampsia we have dissected our chromosome 2q22 susceptibility locus in an extended Australian and New Zealand familial cohort. Positional candidate genes were prioritized for exon-centric sequencing using bioinformatics, SNPing, transcriptional profiling and QTL-walking. In total, we interrogated 1598 variants from 52 genes. Four independent SNP associations satisfied our gene-centric multiple testing correction criteria: a missense LCT SNP (rs2322659, P = 0.0027), a synonymous LRP1B SNP (rs35821928, P = 0.0001), an UTR-3 RND3 SNP (rs115015150, P = 0.0024) and a missense GCA SNP (rs17783344, P = 0.0020). We replicated the LCT SNP association (P = 0.02) and observed a borderline association for the GCA SNP (P = 0.07) in an independent Australian case–control population. The LRP1B and RND3 SNP associations were not replicated in this same Australian singleton cohort. Moreover, these four SNP associations could not be replicated in two additional case–control populations from Norway and Finland. These four SNPs, however, exhibit pleiotropic effects with several quantitative CVD-related traits. Our results underscore the genetic complexity of pre-eclampsia and present novel empirical evidence of possible shared genetic mechanisms underlying both pre-eclampsia and other CVD-related risk factors.
