Abstract Parity detection is essential in quantum error correction. Error syndromes coded in parity are detected routinely by sequential CNOT gates. Here, different from the standard CNOT-gate based scheme, we propose a reliable joint parity measurement (JPM) scheme inspired by stimulated emission. By controlling the collective behavior between data qubits and syndrome qubit, we realize the parity detection and experimentally implement the weight-2 and weight-4 JPM scheme in a tunable coupling superconducting circuit, which shows comparable performance to the CNOT scheme. Moreover, with the aid of the coupling tunability in quantum system, this scheme can be further utilized for specific joint entangling state preparation (JEP) with high fidelity, such as multiqubit entangled state preparation for non-adjacent qubits. This strategy, combined with the superconducting qubit system with tunable couplers, reveals tremendous potential and applications in the surface code architecture without adding extra circuit elements. Besides, the method we develop here can readily be applied in large-scale quantum computation and quantum simulation.

Reliable and fast active reset protocols are key to the functioning of quantum computing systems. Here, the authors use parametric driving to swap an excitation from a transmon qubit to its readout resonator within 34 ns, with negligible effects on neighboring qubits.

Digital quantum simulation of electron-phonon systems requires truncating infinite phonon levels into N basis states and then encoding them with qubit computational basis. Unary encoding and binary encoding are the two most representative encoding schemes, which demand O(N) and O(logN) qubits as well as O(N) and O(NlogN) quantum gates, respectively. In this paper, we propose a variational basis state encoding algorithm that reduces the scaling of the number of qubits and quantum gates to both O(1) for systems obeying the area law of entanglement entropy. The cost for the scaling reduction is a constant amount of additional measurement. The accuracy and efficiency of the approach are verified by both numerical simulation and realistic quantum hardware experiments. In particular, we find using one or two qubits for each phonon mode is sufficient to produce quantitatively correct results across weak and strong coupling regimes. Our approach paves the way for practical quantum simulation of electron-phonon systems on both near-term hardware and error-corrected quantum computers.

We revisit the analytic solution of the two-qubit quantum Rabi model with inhomogeneous coupling and transition frequencies using a displaced oscillator basis. This approach enables us to apply the same truncation rules and techniques adopted in the Rabi model to the two qubits system. The derived analytical spectra match perfectly with the numerical solutions in the parameter regime where the qubits’ transition frequencies are far off-resonance with the field frequency and the interaction strengths reach the ultrastrong coupling regime. We further explore the dynamical behavior of the two qubits as well as the evolution of entanglement. The analytical methods provide unexpectedly accurate results in describing the dynamics of the two qubits in the present experimentally accessible coupling regime. The time evolutions of the probability for the qubits show that the collapse-revival phenomena emerge, survive and finally disappear when one coupling strength increases from weak to strong coupling regimes and the other coupling strength is well into the ultrastrong coupling regime.
