4. Enhancing the 4Cs among College Students of a Communication Skills Course in Tanzania through a Project-Based Learning Model

Abstract

The development of technology has changed the way people communicate in academic contexts as well as working places, for example from print messages to screened messages, and from face-to-face classroom and office meetings to virtual classes and offices. This has prompted the shift from traditional teaching practices to student-centered in which students are guided by their teachers to develop skills for 21st Century careers through the Project-Based Learning model. However, in Tanzania colleges, the teaching of a Communication Skills Course perpetuates traditional teaching practices, which could reduce the chance for students to participate in global democratic activities. Consequently, the present study aimed at exploring how to enhance the 4 C's (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) among the college students of the Communication Skills Course in Tanzania through the Project-Based Learning model. Qualitative participatory action research with two cycles was adopted. Data from ten students, one teacher, and the curriculum were collected through observation, document analysis, and reflective journals. Data were analyzed thematically. Findings show that current teaching practices for Communication Skills Course in Tanzania colleges hardly enhance the development of the 4 C's among students. It was also observed that the implementation of PBL resulted in enhancing the 4 C's among college students in Tanzania colleges. However, large class sizes, poor technological infrastructure, and lack of facilities are among the challenges experienced during the implementation of PBL in enhancing the 4Cs. The study recommends the reformation of current teaching practices, to focus on developing skills needed to cope with students' real-life contexts, instead of focusing on content knowledge. Also, the study calls for the adoption of PBL in Tanzania colleges in teaching Communication Skills to develop necessary skills for the 21st Century. To cope with any potential challenges, the study suggests that there should be collaborative efforts among education stakeholders.

Abstract

In education, a crucial aspect of teaching lies in the teacher's ability to create suitable learning media. As society evolves, so does the need to align the content of classroom media with the emerging socio-scientific issues (SSI) garnering attention. Socio-scientific issues are social issues related to science. We initiated a specialized training program to develop comics with SSI content for elementary and junior high school teachers to address this. Comics are selected as the media due to their inherent advantages in visual representation and simplification of complex concepts, facilitating easier dissemination in the classroom. Drawing on the TPACK framework and comics theory as the foundation in our interview with teachers, our study primarily focused on identifying challenges and opportunities encountered during training. This investigation reveals two themes of challenges and opportunities in technology and human resources. The findings of this study will serve as a fundamental basis for designing and implementing subsequent training sessions, specifically targeting the areas identified as problematic in the initial stages. By enhancing teachers' proficiency in developing SSI comics, we seek to promote effective engagement and understanding of socio-scientific issues in educational settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Reflecting on Communication Practices for Health Literacy among People with Hearing Impairment in Tanzania amid Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Background: Lack of proficiency in using languages (except sign languages) among people with hearing impairment poses difficulties for them to comprehend health-related information, thus, having low health literacy. To bridge this gap, healthcare providers adopt various communication practices to reach people with hearing impairment (HI) some of which prove success while others prove a failure. Consequently, reflection on health literacy communications becomes paramount for the sustainability of health education for people with HI. Objective: The present study reflects on communication practices during Covid-19 pandemic control in Tanzania contexts concerning people with hearing impairment. Methods: The study adopted a qualitative research approach in which the data were collected through interviews from five (5) people with HI obtained through a snowball sampling technique, and three (3) healthcare providers who were purposively sampled. Results: Findings showed that adopted communication practices (writing on papers, lip-reading, and using family members as interpreters) were perceived as less effective by people with hearing impairment. Instead, people with HI preferred communication from other sources that used sign language. Conclusion: Therefore, there are calls for healthcare providers’ pre-service and in-service training programs to impart skills for communicating properly with HI to all healthcare providers.

12. Students' application of integrated skills from mathematics, language, arts, and technology: lessons from students' use of mobile photo editing applications to visualise sustainability concepts

Abstract

This study presents lessons on students' applications of integrated skills from mathematics, language, arts and technology, and the nature of the relationship among these skills' domains. The lessons were drawn from students' project using mobile device photo editing applications (MDPEAs) to visualise sustainability. Qualitative data were collected from five students' reflections, five documents, and three student groups that were sampled purposively. Data that were collected through document analysis, observation and reflective journals were thematically analysed. Findings show that students' use of MDPEAs enhances their application of skills from mathematics, language, artists and technology. The study conceives an interdisciplinary teaching approach as a catalyst to improve students' learning and application of integrated skills from mathematics, language arts and technology. It also exposes the need for training teachers to implement interdisciplinary teaching approaches to enhance learners' development and application of interdisciplinary skills.

21. ANALYSIS OF FEEDBACK GIVING PRACTICE AMONG JUDGES OF BONGO STAR SEARCH PROGRAM

Abstract

Human beings need feedback all the time so as to improve and (or) maintain certain behaviour. However, not every feedback can help one improve or maintain his/her behavior, unless they are appropriately given in a way they are constructive. Much of informal learning on different life aspects including feedback giving practices is done through media. As participants in media programs or viewers, we are much influenced by whatever goes on in the media. Consequently, there is high need to ensure media practices are appropriate so that they can influence the society in a very positive manner. This study analyses feedback giving practices among judges of Bongo Star search program using feedback giving principle. The data used in this study are video clips of BSS in 2015 episode 10. Results show that Bongo Star Search judges with regard to feedback giving principle did not observe the relevant principles to large extent and with regard to the feedback giving principle, they did not observe the principle description to a relatively large extent. Accordingly, the study calls for training among judges of Bongo Star Search on how to give effective feedback.

Abstract

Abstrak. Musik seperti media lain memberikan semacam wacana yang aspek sosial seperti identitas gender dari masyarakat terkait dapat bersama-sama dibangun atau didekonstruksi tergantung pada perspektif ideologis pembicara/penulis. Penelitian ini menganalisis Bongo Flava-Song video ' Niambie ' menggunakan perspektif wacana kritis multimodal sehingga untuk memeriksa apakah lagu melibatkan Co-konstruksi atau dekonstruksi identitas gender. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa identitas gender dalam video lagu dikonstruksi bersama dalam arti bahwa gender pria dominan dibandingkan gender wanita yang menyinggung dari ideologi patriarki yang melaluinya manusia seharusnya mendominasi wanita dalam semua aspek kehidupan. Kata kunci: identitas gender, analisis wacana kritis multimodal, Bongo FlavaAbstract. Music like any other media provides a kind of discourse through which social aspects like gender identity of a particular related society can be co-constructed or deconstructed depending on the ideological perspective of the speaker/writer. This paper analyses Bongo Flava-song video ‘Niambie’ using multimodal critical discourse perspective so as to examine if the song involves co-construction or deconstruction of gender identity. Results show that gender identity in the song video is co-constructed in the sense that male gender is dominant over female gender alluding from patriarchal ideology through which men are supposed to dominate women in all life aspects.
