Low-valent palladium nanoparticles are efficient species promoting catalytic activity and selectivity in a number of chemical reactions. Recently, an atom-centered cuboctahedral Pd13 motif has been characterized as a ligand-protected [Pd13(Tr)6]2+ cluster featuring a 1s2 superatomic shell structure. In this report, we describe the ligand-cluster of and endohedral-cage interaction in [Pd13(Tr)6]2+, which accounts for a favorable situation in the overall cluster. In addition, the spherical aromatic properties of the cluster were evaluated to understand the behavior of the ligand-protected Pd13 cluster core. Our results indicate a sizable interaction towards carbon-based ligands in an overall spherical aromatic cluster featuring a long-range shielding cone. Thus, [Pd13(Tr)6]2+ is rationalized as the first ligand-protected palladium cluster to date exhibiting spherical aromatic properties, serving as a stable building block for molecule-based materials or as a dopant in porous carbon materials. We report on the synthesis, structure and reactivity of [{NCNMe4}Sb(C6H2-tBu2-3,5-O-4)] (3), an organoantimony(III)-oxyaryl species obtained upon Csp2–H bond activation in a phenolate ligand and stabilised by the monoanionic pincer {NCNMe4}−. The mechanism leading to the formation of 3 is highly sensitive to steric considerations. It was probed experimentally and by DFT calculations, and a number of intermediates and related complexes were identified. All data agree with successive heterolytic bond cleaving and bond forming processes involving charged species, rather than a pathway involving free radicals as previously exemplified with congeneric bismuth species. The nucleophilic behaviour of the oxyaryl ligand in 3, a complex that features both zwitterionic and quinoidal attributes, was illustrated in derivatisation reactions. The ability to fabricate bimetallic clusters with atomic precision offers promising prospects for elucidating the correlations between their structures and properties. Nevertheless, achieving precise control at the atomic level in the production of clusters, including the quantity of dopant, characteristic of ligands, charge state of precursors, and structural transformation, have remained a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis, purification, and characterization of a new bimetallic hydride cluster, [AuCu11(H){S2P(OiPr)2}6(C≡CPh)3] (AuCu11H). The hydride position in AuCu11H was determined using DFT calculations. AuCu11H comprises a ligand-stabilized defective fcc Au@Cu11 cuboctahedron. AuCu11H is metastable and undergoes a spontaneous transformation through ligand exchange into the isostructural [AuCu11(Cl){S2P(OiPr)2}6(C≡CPh)3] (AuCu11Cl) and into the complete cuboctahedral [AuCu12{S2P(OiPr)2}6(C≡CPh)4]+ (AuCu12) through an increase in nuclearity. The attempted synthesis of [{Carb}BaPPh2] (1) showed this barium-phosphide and its thf adducts, 1·thf and 1·(thf)2, to be unstable in solution. Our strategy to circumvent the fragility of these compounds involved the use of phosphinoboranes HPPh2·BH3 and HPPh2·B(C6F5)3 instead of HPPh2. This allowed for the synthesis of [{Carb}Ae{PPh2·BH3}] (Ae = Ba, 2; Ca, 3), [{Carb}Ca{(H3B)2PPh2}·(thf)] (4), [{Carb}Ba{PPh2·B(C6F5)3}] (5), [{Carb}Ba{O(B(C6F5)3)CH2CH2CH2CH2PPh2}·thf] (6), [Ba{O(B(C6F5)3)CH2CH2CH2CH2PPh2}2·(thf)1.5] (7) and [Ba{PPh2·B(C6F5)3}2·(thp)2] (8) that were characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy (thp = tetrahydropyran). The molecular structures of 4, 6 and 8 were validated by X-ray diffraction crystallography, which revealed the presence of Ba⋯F stabilizing interactions (ca. 9 kcal mol−1) in the fluorine-containing compounds. Compounds 6 and 7 were obtained upon ring-opening of thf by their respective precursors, 5 and the in situ prepared [Ba{PPh2·B(C6F5)3}2]n. By contrast, thp does not undergo ring-opening under the same conditions but affords clean formation of 8. DFT analysis did not highlight any specific weakness of the Ba–P bond in 1·(thf)2. The instability of this compound is instead thought to stem from the high energy of its HOMO, which contains the non-conjugated P lone pair and features significant nucleophilic reactivity. A structurally precise hydride‐containing Pt‐doped Cu‐rich nanocluster [PtH2Cu14{S2P(OiPr)2}6(CCPh)6] (1) has been synthesized. It consists of a bicapped icosahedral Cu14 cage that encapsulates a linear PtH2 unit. Upon the addition of two equivalents of CF3COOH to 1, two hydrido clusters are isolated. These clusters are [PtHCu11{S2P(OiPr)2}6(CCPh)4] (2), which is a vertex‐missing Cu11 cuboctahedron encaging a PtH moiety, and [PtH2Cu11{S2P(OiPr)2}6(CCPh)3] (3), a distorted 3,3,4,4,4‐pentacapped trigonal prismatic Cu11 cage enclosing a PtH2 unit. The electronic structure of 2, analyzed by Density Functional Theory, is a 2e superatom. The electrocatalytic activities of 1–3 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) were compared. Notably, Cluster 2 exhibited an exceptionally excellent HER activity within metal nanoclusters, with an onset potential of −0.03 V (at 10 mA cm−2), a Tafel slope of 39 mV dec−1, and consistent HER activity throughout 3000 cycles in 0.5 M H2SO4. Our study suggests that the accessible central Pt site plays a crucial role in the remarkable HER activity and may provide valuable insights for establishing correlations between catalyst structure and HER activity. Copper homometallic and copper-rich heterometallic nanoclusters with some Cu(0) character are reviewed. Their structure and stability are discussed in terms of their number of "free" electrons. In many aspects, this structural chemistry differs from that of their silver or copper homologs. Whereas the two-electron species are by far the most numerous, only one eight-electron species is known, but more electron-rich nanoclusters have also been reported. Owing to the relatively recent development of this chemistry, it is likely that more electron-rich species will be reported in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bimetallic M20 and M21 compounds, {[Cu3Ag17{S2P(OiPr)2}12]0.5 [Cu4Ag16{S2P(OiPr)2}12]0.5} ({[1a]0.5[1b]0.5}) and [Cu4Ag17{S2P(OiPr)2}12](PF6) (2), have been structurally characterized, in which the Cu(I) ions are randomly distributed on the eight outer positions capping the eight-electron [Ag13]5+ core. DFT calculations show that the statistical disorder results from the nearly neutral preference of copper to occupy any of the eight outer positions. Surprisingly, the UV–Vis absorption spectra of the M20 and M21 bimetallic nanoclusters display an almost identical absorption profile as that of their homometallic [Ag20{S2P(OiPr)2}12] and [Ag21{S2P(OiPr)2}12]+ relatives. This is rationalized by TD-DFT calculations, which show that the frontier orbitals of such eight-electron alloys are largely independent from the nature of the capping metal ions. A blue-shifted absorption is observed upon replacing by Au the central Ag atom in 2, forming the trimetallic compound [Cu4AuAg16{S2P(OiPr)2}12](PF6) (3). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
