Introduction: Tobacco is one of the proven risk factors, contributes substantially to the rising epidemic of non-communicable diseases. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of tobacco use and associated factors among adolescents of a selected public School in Kaski district. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was adopted and data was collected with self-administered questionnaire from 168 respondents. Results: The prevalence of tobacco-use was 19.6 percent and mean age of initiation was13.84 years. The most common reasons for smoking were peer pressure (63.3%), imitation (27.3%), family influence (27.3%) and quest for new experience (21.2%). Tobacco-use was strongly associated with ethnicity (p=0.03), mother's education level (p=0.02), father's occupation (p=0.03), peer pressure (p=0.01) and friends smoking habit (p=0.03). Conclusion: Tobacco-focused interventions are required for school going adolescents to promote cessation among users and prevent its initiation.

This research work is an attempt to understand the effect of stored strain energy heterogeneity over macro-scale, induced during interrupted annealing treatment, on the micro structural evolution in a heavily cold rolled AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel. The cold rolled AISI 304L stainless steel (SS) samples were subjected to different annealing treatments. The microstructures obtained after each annealing treatment were characterized using optical and electron microscopy techniques. Further, an attempt was made to estimate the stored strain energy by a novel approach of micro hardness measurement both over small scale (area 3600 mu m(2)) and large scale (area similar to 0.25 mm(2)). The stored strain energy was determined using hardness values. Using these data, spatial stored strain energy distribution contour maps were created. They were, in turn, used to characterize the local softening behavior both at micro and macro-scale levels after each interrupted annealing treatment. The results showed that, interrupted annealing treatment induces increased stored strain energy heterogeneity after each annealing interruptions. Also, it was possible to determine recrystallization kinetics of the material using stored strain energy map, which helps in designing annealing cycles for achieving ultrafine grained microstructure.

Ultrafine grained austenitic stainless steel, with two different types of grain size distributions, was studied for tensile deformation behavior. Tensile deformed specimens were analyzed by electron backscatter diffraction using scanning electron microscope. It was found from this study that uni-modal grained stainless steel (SS) having a larger fraction of submicron grains exhibited early fracture, which is attributed to the development of extensive strain localization. On the other hand, the microstructure of SS having bimodal grain size distribution showed a good combination of strength and ductility. EBSD analysis of the deformed region of these two samples revealed the presence of a distinct transition zone between undeformed or less deformed and extensively sheared regions. Multiple micro shear bands were found to be associated with the transition zone of unimodal type microstructure. The micro shear bands seen in the transition zone of unimodal SS led to the development of strain-induced martensite (SIM), which, in turn, is helpful in delaying the strain localization. However, in bimodal grained SS, the larger fraction of micron size grains undergoes a shape change, with a rotation towards [112] orientation, which results in the formation of a larger fraction of SIM having [112] orientation. The propensity for development of high SIM was found to prevent strain localization in bimodal grained SS.

The present work developed a two-step thermal cycling technique for processing of fine-grained pure copper for improved properties. This included initial annealing of specimens followed by heavy cold rolling and a series of heating and cooling cycles. The study investigated the important microstructural changes occurring in the cold deformed grains in the absence of phase transformations. A major interest of the present research was to closely describe the effect of thermal cycling parameters on the recrystallization and grain growth kinetics for processing of fine-grained structure. The study determined the optimum values of process parameters for the developed thermal cycling route including the extent of cold deformation, annealing temperatures, holding periods, and the number of thermal cycles. The thermal cycling process produced closely distributed fine grains with bi-modal microstructure leading to increased hardness and strength without any significant loss in electrical conductivity.

The study describes evolution of the recrystallization microstructure in an austenitic stainless steel during iterative or repetitive type annealing process. The starting heavily cold deformed microstructure consisted of a dual phase structure i.e., strain-induced martensite (SIM) (43 pct in volume) and heavily deformed large grained retained austenite. Recrystallization behavior was compared with Johnson Mehl Avrami and Kolmogorov model. Early annealing iterations led to reversion of SIM to reversed austenite. The microstructure changes observed in the retained austenite and in the reverted austenite were mapped by electron backscatter diffraction technique and transmission electron microscope. The reversed austenite was characterized by a fine polygonal substructure consisting of low-angle grain boundaries. With an increasing number of annealing repetitions, these boundaries were gradually replaced by high-angle grain boundaries and recrystallized into ultrafine-grained microstructure. On the other hand, recrystallization of retained austenite grains was sluggish in nature. Progress of recrystallization in these grains was found to take place by a gradual evolution of subgrains and their subsequent transformation into fine grains. The observed recrystallization characteristics suggest continuous recrystallization type process. The analysis provided basic insight into the recrystallization mechanisms that enable the processing of ultrafine-grained fcc steels by iterative type annealing. Tensile properties of the processed material showed a good combination of strength and ductility.

A ternary Fe–Cr–Ni alloy, akin to super martensitic stainless steels was prepared in vacuum induction furnace. The as cast ingot was solution treated at 1200 °C for 25 h and then hot forged and rolled to reduce into plate form. The hot rolled plate of martensitic microstructure was then cold rolled to 80% of thickness reduction. The phase transformation studies by X-ray diffraction analysis of hot and cold rolled specimens showed presence of retained austenite in air cooled as well as in water quenched state after annealing/austenising temperature of 1060 °C. The reaustenisation behaviour of the cold rolled alloy in water quenched state was studied by high temperature X-ray diffraction analysis. It showed very stable martensitic phase and the completion of reaustenisation process were observed to occur at about 950 °C. The recrystallisation behaviour of cold rolled material under isothermal and repeated annealing treatment was studied in detail by electron microscope. The tensile properties of the material were evaluated after various annealing treatments. The study revealed that by a suitable sequence of repetitive annealing process microstructure could be tailored to achieve tensile strength above 1 GPa with good ductility in a super martensitic stainless steel.

The aim of the present study was to understand recrystallisation behaviour of a cold rolled AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel when annealed repetitively for short durations. The results were compared with isothermal annealing process. The evolving microstructure was examined by electron microscope. Electron backscattered diffraction was performed in a FEI NANO SEM 430 Field Emission Gun scanning electron microscope using an EDAX/TSL high-speed Digiview camera for Kikuchi pattern acquisition. Also progress of recrystallisation was assessed by hardness measurements at different annealing conditions. The study revealed distinct differences in the progress of recrystallisation of repeated and isothermally annealed specimens. Also the formation of ultrafine grained microstructure by repeated annealing process was noted.

Commercial grade AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel was heavily cold rolled to 90% of thickness reduction. The cold rolled material was subjected to repetitive annealing treatment for short duration of 45–60 s at various temperatures. The microstructure of the cold rolled and after annealing was studied by optical as well as transmission electron microscope. The microstructural examination of the specimens after repetitive annealing process revealed the formation of ultrafine grain size microstructure. It was also noted that depending on the processing condition the grain size distribution varied widely. The tensile testing of the annealed specimen showed that the yield strength increased by 4–5 times that of the coarse grained material. However, a loss in the strain hardening ability was observed in these specimens. A good combination of yield strength and ductility for ultrafine grained stainless steel as compared to the coarse grained material could be obtained by the optimization of the microstructure.

The solution treated commercial grade AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel plate was heavily cold rolled to 90% of thickness reduction. Cold rolled specimens were annealed at various temperatures by thermal cycles and isothermal annealing. Strain-induced phase transformations and microstructure studies were carried out both in the cold rolled and annealed conditions. The X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements were used for phase transformation studies. The transmission electron microscope characterisation revealed that the cyclic thermal process resulted in ultrafine grain austenite formation whereas, the isothermal annealing developed coarser grain size microstructure. The different microstructural evolutions by the above two processes largely influenced the development of the recrystallisation texture. The thermal cycling produced a distinct γ-fibre texture while the isothermal annealing resulted in a cube texture component along with the γ-fibre. The γ-fibre texture evolution was attributed to the over critical subgrains or nuclei and {1 0 0} 〈0 0 1〉 cube texture to the coarser grains of micrometer size.

As-received hot-rolled commercial grade AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel plates were solution treated at 1060 °C to achieve chemical homogeneity. Microstructural characterization of the solution-treated material revealed polygonal grains of about 85-μm size along with annealing twins. The solution-treated plates were heavily cold rolled to about 90 pct of reduction in thickness. Cold-rolled specimens were then subjected to thermal cycles at various temperatures between 750 °C and 925 °C. X-ray diffraction showed about 24.2 pct of strain-induced martensite formation due to cold rolling of austenitic stainless steel. Strain-induced martensite formed during cold rolling reverted to austenite by the cyclic thermal process. The microstructural study by transmission electron microscope of the material after the cyclic thermal process showed formation of nanostructure or ultrafine grain austenite. The tensile testing of the ultrafine-grained austenitic stainless steel showed a yield strength 4 to 6 times higher in comparison to its coarse-grained counterpart. However, it demonstrated very poor ductility due to inadequate strain hardenability. The poor strain hardenability was correlated with the formation of strain-induced martensite in this steel grade.

A 12-hour-old male infant presented with prolapsed abdominal content through a defect on left side of chest wall with respiratory distress. A thorough clinical examination suggested absence of ectopia cordis, abdominal wall defect, and any bony anomaly. The child expired after 6 hours of admission because of respiratory distress and electrolyte imbalance. Is congenital defect of chest wall associated with diaphragmatic hernia without ectopia cordis and omphalocele, an unusual variant of Cantrell's pentalogy?
