Abstract

The neglected use of micronutrient greatly hampered the productivity of oilseed crop. Thus, to determine the optimal dose of S and B on toria under rice-fallow system, an experiment was carried out with five doses of S i.e. 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 kg/ha and 3 doses of B i.e. 0, 1 and 2 kg/ha for two consecutive years (2018–19 and 2019–20). The plant growth parameters, i.e. plant height, dry matter accumulation, leaf area index and crop growth rate, and yield attributing parameters, i.e. siliqua/plant and seeds/siliqua, were greatly enhanced through application of S @ 30 kg/ha as well as B@ 2 kg/ha. The higher seed yield (10.11q/ha), stover yield (22.00q/ha) and oil yield (3.86 q/ha) were registered with the application of S @ 30 kg/ha + B @ 2 kg/ha, but it was at par with S@ 30 kg/ha + B @ 1 kg/ha. The combined application of S@ 30 kg/ha + B @ 2 kg/ha also noted higher plant nutrient uptake of N, P, K including S and B closely followed by S@ 30 kg/ha + B @ 1 kg/ha. But in terms of economics, conjugate application of S@ 30 kg/ha + B @1 kg/ha showed maximum monetary benefit with highest B:C (2.24). The pearson correlation indicated strong and positive correlation of seed yield with growth and yield parameters as well as nutrient uptake by plants. Regression analysis revealed that each one unit increase in plant dry matter accumulation showed an increase in seed yield by 4.56 unit and each one increase uptake in N, P, K, S and B showed an increase in seed yield by 0.19, 0.63,0.40,0.55 and 0.05, respectively. Henceforth, considering all the factors the combination of S@ 30 kg/ha and B@1 kg/ha may be recommended under the late sown toria in rice-fallow system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Based on popularity and specialty, seven traditional rice varieties were tested for resistance reactions in terms of physicochemical properties against rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae and compared with the improved high yielding rice varieties during 2019-2021. The result revealed that the aromatic rice variety Kon joha was the least suffered (11.67%) under the husked condition, whereas the aromatic traditional rice variety Bokul joha was the least suffered (53.00%) under the dehusked conditions at 18 days after infestation. Amongst the traditional varieties, the Black rice variety suffered maximum weight loss of 60.16% under de-husked conditions. All tested physical and biochemical parameters revealed a significant positive correlation with weight loss (r=0.87), total soluble protein (r=0.86), 1000 grain weight (r=0.74), moisture content (r=0.54), germination loss (r=0.89) and seed vigor loss (r=0.54) at 180 days of infestation under husked condition, while significant positive correlation with weight loss (r=0.91), starch content (r=0.98), crude protein content (r=0.94), L/B ratio (r=0.88), 1000 grain weight (r=0.50) and moisture content (r=0.87) at 180 days of infestation under de-husked condition. The rice grains possessing a high percentage of starch and protein, but a low per cent of crude fat was found more prone to infestation by S. oryzae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

With an aim to find out an effective bed disinfectant regulating disease incidence, larval growth parameters and mortality of mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori L. revealed a positive influence on the disease incidence, and larval growth of mulberry silkworm race, (CSR6 × CSR26) × (CSR2 × CSR27). The commercial bed disinfectant, Ankush manifested better result in terms of reduction in disease incidence (1.833 %) and larval parameters (larval duration, 21.888 days; full grown larval weight, 4.596 g; silk gland weight, 0.889 g and 24.181% SGTSI) compared to the control (22.667 days, 3.976 g, 0.817 g and 20.726 %, respectively) followed by Sericillin and Turmeric rhizome powder alone or in combinations. However, a combination of bed disinfectants viz., Ankush + Sericillin, Ankush + Turmeric rhizome powder and Sericillin + Turmeric rhizome powder recorded better results compared to Turmeric rhizome powder alone. Though bed disinfectants did not show any significant effect on mortality percentage but Ankush resulted highest reduction of mortality over control (46.933 %). The performance of all the bed disinfectants was found to be better during the late spring season.

34. Extent of livelihood opportunity of the sericulture farmers in Kamrup district of Assam

Abstract

The study was conducted with a sample of 120 sericulture farmers in Kamrup district of Assam in three development blocks viz. Bongaon, Boko and Chayani Borduwa. The study revealed that majority (43.33%) of the respondents belonged to middle age group, 36.67% were illiterate, 45.83% belonged to small size family and 69.17% had pucca house. In case of operational land holding majority (34.17%) of the respondents possessed small size of land holding, 33.95% had annual income ranging from Rs.75,001-1,00,000, 75.00% had medium level of extension contact, 61.67% had moderate level of risk bearing ability, 59.17% had moderate level of decision-making ability and only 23.33% had received training. Most of the respondents (35.00%) practiced “Sericulture +paddy+plantation crops” followed by “Sericulture+paddy+piggery" (15.83%) and “Sericulture+paddy+fruits” (12.50%) as their livelihood options. Education, family size, house type, operational land holding risk bearing ability and decision-making ability have significant relationship on livelihood options.

42. Economic characters of muga silkworm cocoons influenced by regions and commercial seasons

Abstract

Muga cocoons were procured from Jorhat, Kamrup and Lakhimpur districts in spring and autumn season. The objective was to determine the impact of three regions and commercial seasons on cocoon characters in terms of cocoon size, cocoon weight, pupal weight, shell weight and shell ratio. The experiment was laid out in completely randomised design with three replications. The impact of three regions and two seasons was found to be significant on cocoon parameters. Large sized cocoons were obtained from Kamrup district followed by Lakhimpur and Jorhat in autumn season compared to those obtained in spring season. Cocoon weight, shell weight, pupal weight and shell ratio percentage (5.73g, 0.51g, 5.19g and 8.74% respectively) were found to be significantly higher in Kamrup as compared to Lakhimpur (5.4g, 0.46g, 4.94g and 8.43% respectively) while lowest was recorded in Jorhat district (5.27g, 0.43g, 4.83g and 8.20% respectively) irrespective of the seasons. Considering the seasons, cocoons obtained from autumn were superior in terms of cocoon characters (5.66g cocoon weight, 0.49g shell weight, 5.16g pupal weight and 8.63% shell ratio) than those of spring season. Kamrup district and autumn season have turned out to be the best region and best season clearly indicating that region and season influences the cocoon characters of muga silkworm.

Abstract

Assam is well-recognized for its rich genetic diversity of rice. The climatic condition and geographical location cause better production of rice in the past of Assam. Winter rice is the leading rice crop, accounting for a major portion of the total rice production in Assam and NBPZ is one of the main regions where most of its livelihood depends on agriculture. The purpose of the study is to analyze the trend of area, production, and productivity of winter rice and identify the change point for winter rice productivity in NBPZ of Assam. Analyzing over thirty years of the data for the NBPZ led to the detection of the change point for the productivity of winter rice. The study also revealed that the NBPZ is not limited to studying climateresilient productivity of winter rice only, but there is a great need for the implementation of effective measures on crop production and productivity.
