Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of adding liquid extract of algae (Hypnea musciformis, Grateloupia acuminata, and Sargassum muticum) (HGS) and Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) using this extract to rear water of Oreochromis niloticus, on improving culture water indices, growth performance, digestive enzyme, hemato-biochemical characters, immune, antioxidative responses, and resistance after challenged by Aeromonas hydrophila with specific refer to the potential role of the mixture in vitro as resistance against three strains bacteria (Aeromonas sobria, Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. aeruginosa) and one parasite (Cichlidogyrus tilapia). The first group represented control, HGS0, whereas the other group, HGS5, HGS10, and HGS15 mL−1 of liquid extract, as well as all groups with 7.5 μg mL−1 MgO-NPs added to culture water of O. niloticus, for 60 days. Data showed that increasing levels at HGS 10 and HGS15 mL−1 in to-culture water significantly enhanced growth-stimulating digestive enzyme activity and a significantly improved survival rate of O. niloticus after being challenged with A. hydrophila than in the control group. The total viability, coliform, fecal coliform count, and heavy metal in muscle partially decreased at HGS 10 and HGS15 mL−1 than in the control group. Correspondingly, the highest positive effect on hemato-biochemical indices was noticed at levels HGS 10 and HGS15 mL−1. Fish noticed an improvement in immune and antioxidant indices compared to control groups partially at HGS 10 and HGS15 mL−1. Interestingly, fish cultured in rearing water with the mixture provided downregulated the related inflammatory genes (HSP70, TNF, IL-1β, and IL-8) partially at HGS15 mL−1. In vitro, the mixture showed positive efficiency as an antibacterial and partially antiparasitic at HGS 10 and HGS15 mL−1. This study proposes utilizing a mixture of (HGS) and (MgO-NPs) with optimum levels of 10–15 mL-1 in cultured water to improve water indices, growth, health status, and increased resistance of O. niloticus against bacterial and parasitic infection.

Abstract

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study is conducted for silicon ingot irradiation facility in a typical material testing reactor (MTR). The ingots are placed inside the irradiation device in staggered and in-line bundles. The configurations are varied according to the variations of longitudinal and transverse pitches Sl and St, respectively. For in-line bundles, Sl and St are changed in the range of 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 of the ingot diameter. For staggered bundles, Sl is changed in the range of 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 of the ingot diameter while St is changed in the range of 0.95, 1.0, 1.05, 1.1, and 1.15 of the ingot diameter. The silicon ingot volumetric heat generation Qv is allowed to change around its nominal value in the range of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 W/g. The effects of rotation of ingots during irradiation at velocities of 15, 30, and 60 rpm are investigated. The computational fluid dynamics code ANSYS FLUENT is employed to carry out the calculations. The temperature profile inside the silicon ingot during irradiation is of significant importance for uniform doping. Therefore, the impact of heat generation and bundle pitches on the temperature profile through the ingot is calculated and reported for all cases of this study. The results show that the maximum ingot temperature does not exceed the limits for each bundle at maximum heat generation. Two correlations for average Nusselt number for both aligned and staggered configurations are generated to describe heat transfer rates during natural convection regime. The rotation of ingots during irradiation showed considerable enhancement of heat transfer rates.

Abstract

The main objective of nuclear reactor safety is to maintain the nuclear fuel in a thermally safe condition with enough safety margins during normal operation and anticipated operational occurrences. In this research, core flow bypass is studied under the conditions of the unavailability of safety systems. As core bypass occurs, the core flow rate is assumed to decrease exponentially with a time constant of 25 s to new steady state values of 20, 40, 60, and 80% of the nominal core flow rate. The thermal hydraulic code PARET is used through these calculations. Reactor thermal hydraulic stability is reported for all cases of core flow bypass. Abstract

Heat transfer deterioration (HTD) phenomena in supercritical water is one of the most thermal hydraulic critical issues for supercritical reactors. The onset of heat transfer deterioration and bouncy effect have been studied in details, however limited work has been done on the mechanism of HTD occurrence. In this work, three dimensional analysis of velocity and temperature boundary layers under heat transfer deterioration conditions is conducted. The effect of thermo physical water properties changes inside the fluid boundary layer and its effect on the heat transfer coefficient is studied. Analogy between HTD and critical heat flux condition in subcritical boiling is observed and reported. Under HTD conditions, clotting or sudden stopping of the flow inside the tube is predicted due to the severe variation in density and other thermo physical properties in the tubes radial direction.

19. Performance and emissions of a diesel engine burning blends of Jatropha and waste cooking oil biodiesel.

Abstract

Blending of biodiesels is a straightforward but efficient solution to the issue of improving biodiesel characteristics in cold climates. A comparison of emissions and performance of a diesel engine powered by methyl ester blends made from jatropha and waste cooking oil (WCO) was investigated. Jatropha oil was converted into biodiesel through esterification and transesterification, but WCO biodiesel was produced by transesterification. Volume percentages of WCO and jatropha biodiesels as 5, 10, 15, 20, and 100% were prepared. Peak improvements in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) were 7% and 6% for JB20 and WB10 + JB10, respectively, at 75% of engine output power over diesel fuel. Maximum reductions in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) related to diesel oil were for JB20 and WB10 + JB10 6 and 5%, respectively. For JB100, the maximum increase in exhaust gas temperature over diesel oil was 45%. For WB10 + JB10, the maximum reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emission about pure diesel was 10%. WB10 + JB10 blend had carbon monoxide (CO) emission reduction up to 6% than fossil diesel. For WB10 + JB10, the maximum reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission relative to crude diesel was 10%. WB10 + JB10 had the greatest reduction in smoke emission when compared to diesel oil as 22%. WB10 + JB10 had the largest reduction in unburned hydrocarbons (HC) of 14% over diesel oil at 75% of output power. In comparison to other fuels, the WB10 + JB10 and JB20 biodiesel blends produce better engine performance and lower emissions as compared to other biodiesel blends. As an alternative fuel in conventional diesel engines, it is recommended to use a mixture of jatropha and WCO biodiesels of 10% by volume. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Contains fulltext : 296013.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Resting heart rate is associated with cardiovascular diseases and mortality in observational and Mendelian randomization studies. The aims of this study are to extend the number of resting heart rate associated genetic variants and to obtain further insights in resting heart rate biology and its clinical consequences. A genome-wide meta-analysis of 100 studies in up to 835,465 individuals reveals 493 independent genetic variants in 352 loci, including 68 genetic variants outside previously identified resting heart rate associated loci. We prioritize 670 genes and in silico annotations point to their enrichment in cardiomyocytes and provide insights in their ECG signature. Two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses indicate that higher genetically predicted resting heart rate increases risk of dilated cardiomyopathy, but decreases risk of developing atrial fibrillation, ischemic stroke, and cardio-embolic stroke. We do not find evidence for a linear or non-linear genetic association between resting heart rate and all-cause mortality in contrast to our previous Mendelian randomization study. Systematic alteration of key differences between the current and previous Mendelian randomization study indicates that the most likely cause of the discrepancy between these studies arises from false positive findings in previous one-sample MR analyses caused by weak-instrument bias at lower P-value thresholds. The results extend our understanding of resting heart rate biology and give additional insights in its role in cardiovascular disease development.

23. Steady state thermal hydraulic modelling of WWR-S tank-in-pool research reactor for the purpose of its power upgrading

Abstract

This paper presents a newly developed steady state core thermal hydraulic model (named SSTH-RR10 model) for upgrading the Egyptian first Research Reactor (ETRR-1), from its original power of 2 MWth to a higher level of 10 MWth, by considering different types of nuclear fuels. The SSTH-RR10 model is capable to predict and calculate, by means of a developed computer program, all the steady state thermal hydraulic parameters for the defined core configuration for each fuel type at 10 MWth. Three different fuel types were investigated: the reference fuel EK-10 rod type, the MTR plate type, and the IRT-4M ducted type. For each fuel type, the distribution of central fuel, clad, and coolant temperatures for average and hot channels of the core were predicted in the axial direction. Power distributions and pressure gradients were predicted as well. Moreover, the program calculates the safety limits and margins against the critical phenomena encountered such as the Onset of Nucleate Boiling (ONB), Departure from Nucleate Boiling (DNB), and the Onset of Flow Instability (OFI). Results of the SSTH-RR10 program for benchmarks of powers of 2 and 10 MWth are verified by comparing it with the published results of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and those published for other programs such as PARET code, and very good agreement is found. The safety margins against ONB and DNB were evaluated in which the minimum DNB ratio was found to be about 3.1, which gives a sufficient margin against the DNB. The present work gives confidence in the model results and applications.

Abstract

Solar water pumping systems are considered one of the best solutions especially in rural and isolated areas where the traditional sources of power (electricity or diesel) are unavailable or very costly. It represents a clean source of energy, available with abundant quantities with very good average daily solar radiation of about 5.5 kW h/m2/day. The present work provides a comprehensive study for a complete design of the solar pumping system components with different water demands. A computer program is designed and developed to offer the system design and the solar simulation model is presented. The hydraulic power, photovoltaic (PV) peak power, PV required area, and total system costs for different total dynamic heads and different water demands ranged from 1–1000 m3/day are calculated. The present research is a good tool for designers, users, and buyers of such systems. It is found that the PV solar water pumping system is more economically feasible than diesel generators up to a water demand of 100 m3/day. The model is a needed tool for all concerned in the field of PV solar water pumping including costumers.

Abstract

Increase of fossil fuel consumption rate, depletion of conventional fuel, harmful pollutants increase, and global warming contribute to search about alternative fuels. The produced oil from non-edible jatropha seeds becomes the researcher's interest due to the higher price of edible oils. An efficient system for extracting the oil from Egyptian jatropha seeds has been designed, manufactured and tested. The designed screw press was to get the highest oil yield. Physical and chemical characteristics such as the extracted oil density, kinematic viscosity, flash point, heating value and cetane number were calculated. The extraction time of the oil from jatropha seeds was 30 minutes at a yield of 19%. Due to lower FFA of 2.7%, the extracted jatropha oil provided light color. As the temperature decreased, the density and viscosity of the extracted oil were decreased. The produced oil flash point was greater than crude diesel. The extracted jatropha achieved the calorific value of 39128 kJ/kg. Screw press extraction process increased jatropha biodiesel oxidation instability due to the content of oleic and linoleic acids.

Abstract

The main objective for reactor engineering and inherent safety features is to keep the nuclear fuel in a thermally safe condition with enough safety margins during all operational states (normal-abnormal and accidental states). In this work, an accident analysis of the unprotected loss of flow transient in a typical material test reactor is presented. The effect of reactor operator intervention during the accident in case of manually triggering the shutdown system at different flow coast down ratios is studied. Flow trip scenarios are compared for flow trip ratios of 14, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 %. The calculations were performed with the nuclear reactor analysis code PARET. Abstract

The main objective of nuclear reactor safety is to maintain the nuclear fuel in a thermally safe condition with enough safety margins during normal operation and anticipated operational occurrences. In this research, core flow bypass is studied under the conditions of the unavailability of safety systems. As core bypass occurs, the core flow rate is assumed to decrease exponentially with a time constant of 25 s to new steady state values of 20, 40, 60, and 80% of the nominal core flow rate. The thermal hydraulic code PARET is used through these calculations. Reactor thermal hydraulic stability is reported for all cases of core flow bypass. Abstract

Heat transfer deterioration (HTD) phenomena in supercritical water is one of the most thermal hydraulic critical issues for supercritical reactors. The onset of heat transfer deterioration and bouncy effect have been studied in details, however limited work has been done on the mechanism of HTD occurrence. In this work, three dimensional analysis of velocity and temperature boundary layers under heat transfer deterioration conditions is conducted. The effect of thermo physical water properties changes inside the fluid boundary layer and its effect on the heat transfer coefficient is studied. Analogy between HTD and critical heat flux condition in subcritical boiling is observed and reported. Under HTD conditions, clotting or sudden stopping of the flow inside the tube is predicted due to the severe variation in density and other thermo physical properties in the tubes radial direction.

Abstract

Increase of fossil fuel consumption rates, depletion of conventional fuel, harmful exhaust emissions increase and global warming led to search about alternative fuels. This study was established to find suitable alternative fuels. The produced oil from non-edible jatropha seeds becomes researcher's interest because of the higher price of edible vegetable oils. Design, manufacturing, and testing of an efficient system to produce the oil from jatropha seeds was carried out. Hydraulic press for pressing Egyptian jatropha seeds to produce the jatropha oil was designed. The design was made to obtain the maximum yield. Physical and chemical parameters as specific gravity, kinematic viscosity, calorific value, flash number and cetane number of the extracted oils were measured. Time of oil extracted from jatropha seeds is 720 minutes at a yield of 11%. Jatropha oil extracted by hydraulic press gave lighter oil color because of lower FFA of 5% for the produced oil. The density and viscosity of the extracted oil decreased with the temperature increase. The flash point of extracted jatropha oil by hydraulic press is higher than diesel oil. Calorific value of jatropha oil extracted by hydraulic process was 39201 kJ/kg. Jatropha biodiesel oxidation instability increased for hydraulic extraction due to its content of oleic and linoleic acids.

Abstract

Solar water pumping systems are the ideal energy provider solution especially in rural and isolated areas where the traditional sources of power (electricity or diesel) are unavailable or very costly. It is available with abundant quantities of daily falling solar radiation of about 5.5 kWh/m2/day and considered a clean source of energy. The present work provides a mathematical model and performance evaluation of a solar water pumping system for different water demands through a comprehensive design tool simulation program prepared and designed by the authors. The simulated results can provide for the studied water demand range, the corresponding pump electric power for the desired total dynamic head, the required PV peak power, its related area requirements, and the corresponding total cost of the system components in Euro. The present research is a good accurate quick tool for designers, users, and buyers of such systems.

Abstract

A person's lipid profile is influenced by genetic variants and alcohol consumption, but the contribution of interactions between these exposures has not been studied. We therefore incorporated gene-alcohol interactions into a multiancestry genome-wide association study of levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides. We included 45 studies in stage 1 (genome-wide discovery) and 66 studies in stage 2 (focused follow-up), for a total of 394,584 individuals from 5 ancestry groups. Analyses covered the period July 2014-November 2017. Genetic main effects and interaction effects were jointly assessed by means of a 2-degrees-of-freedom (df) test, and a 1-df test was used to assess the interaction effects alone. Variants at 495 loci were at least suggestively associated (P < 1 × 10-6) with lipid levels in stage 1 and were evaluated in stage 2, followed by combined analyses of stage 1 and stage 2. In the combined analysis of stages 1 and 2, a total of 147 independent loci were associated with lipid levels at P < 5 × 10-8 using 2-df tests, of which 18 were novel. No genome-wide-significant associations were found testing the interaction effect alone. The novel loci included several genes (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 5 (PCSK5), vascular endothelial growth factor B (VEGFB), and apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide 1 (APOBEC1) complementation factor (A1CF)) that have a putative role in lipid metabolism on the basis of existing evidence from cellular and experimental models.
