So-called folk linguistics, i.e. folk beliefs concerning language, may be a valuable source of information for various linguistic fields and for practical applications, e.g. in teaching practice. The author presents an analysis of folk linguistics as it can be reconstructed from Internet discussions by Czechspeaking women (especially mothers). The results show that the folk theory of language and its use is quite complex, with multiple connections to a scientific theory of language (probably acquired through school education) and with important evaluative features (including e.g. folk theories of correctness and errors). The author proposes a new Czech term (laická jazykověda) and suggests that the theory should be seen as dynamic (e.g. changing over time and during speakers’ lives) and structured (e.g. consisting of a centre and peripheries and containing several “layers” of shared sub-theories).

- Abstract
Lucie Saicová Římalová The axiosphere of the child´s soul in the discourse of young mothers Values are often transferred by parents to children, therefore it is important to know what contemporary young parents and parents-to-be think and believe. The contribution discusses how young Czech speaking women see child´s soul and what values they ascribe to it. It also tries to demonstrate how these values are influenced by such factors as (e.g.) a specific “Czech” relation to religion or the fact whether the women already have a child. The data are taken from the discourse (mainly discussions) published on internet websites for mothers, pregnant women, women who plan to have a child etc. The analysis uses a combination of methodologies – selected theories of cognitive linguistics (esp. the theory of the linguistic picture of the world and conceptual metaphors) and critical discourse analysis.

- Abstract
When We Start Talking... Linguistic Analysis of Early Production of a Czech Speaking Child The research presents a linguistically oriented analysis of the so called oneword period, i.e. the period from approximately 12 to 18 months of age, in a child acquiring Czech language. It presents a meaning-based approach that combines the interest in the expressed (broadly defined) meanings with attention to both the interactive and dialogical character of early child speech and the specific features of early child production. The analysis itself focuses on the complex repertoire of a child'means of communication, early signals of grammar, and selected topics connected with the wider textual context of the child's production. The study focuses on a period of development and topics that have not yet been studied in detail in Czech linguistics and uses theoretical apparatus that has not been applied to the Czech language in this form. The analysis is based on data collected by the author as part of longitudinal research into the acquisition of Czech. It uses video recordings of natural everyday communication between the child and his carer (mainly his mother), combined with a parental diary. The methodology of the video data collection is analogous to that used by authors analysing the acquisition of Slovak (cf. Slančová, 2008a), which makes future comparison of selected results possible. The study shows that the selected combination of data collection methods is useful for qualitative analysis of the one-word period from a more general point of view, e.g. when we analyse such topics as (broadly defined) meanings and their means of expression in the communicative context. The analysis focuses on a case study – analysis of the production of one child, a healthy hearing monolingual boy. Using a case study enabled us to make the analysis complex and detailed, but leaves us open to questions as to the degree to which we can see the results as generally valid. Further analysis, studying more children and combining other methods, is therefore no doubt desirable. The focus on meaning, the specificity of early child speech, and interaction led to several theoretical conclusions, especially to a different delimitation of such terms as a word, a morpheme, parts of speech, grammaticalcategories, syntax, and negation. Each term was adjusted according to the nature of the data analysed, especially to the fact that during most of the period of research the child mainly uses one-word utterances, combines words with non-verbal means of communication, and does not change forms of words to express different grammatical categories. The selected approach also led to particular views on topics discussed in theoretical literature, such as repetition, reduplication, and so called over-extension. The book is divided into five parts: Chapter I introduces basic terminology (1.1), summarises the research into the acquisition of language in Czech-speaking children (1.2) and the so-called one-word period (1.6), and discusses the basic concepts and topics characterising the chosen approach to the analysis – the interaction and dialogue between the child and his carer (1.3), meaning and its acquisition (1.4), the advantages and disadvantages of longitudinal research based on natural data etc. (1.5). Chapter II studies the repertoire of the child's means of communication. Unlike some other approaches, it covers both verbal and nonverbal means of communication. It attempts to show the repertoire as fully as possible and to observe how it changes throughout the research period. It is divided into three parts: when the child is 12, 15, and 18 months old. Chapter III is dedicated to early grammar, i.e. early morphology, syntax, and the expression of negation. The section on morphology (3.1) focuses on the question of words, morphemes, word classes and word forms in early child production. The first signals of “real”

Slovesa typu jít/chodit, běžet/běhat, nést/nosit atd., obvykle označovaná jako slovesa pohybu, poutají opakovaně pozornost badatelů a badatelek zabývajících se slovanskými jazyky. Důvodem je především to, že tato slovesa se chovají v mnohém jinak než „běžná” slovesa nedokonavá. Dosavadní analýzy uvedených českých sloves využívají zejména metody funkčně-strukturní a každý z typů (typ jít i typ chodit) se snaží popsat pomocí minimálního počtu obvykle velmi abstraktních rysů. V této práci se autorka pokouší – s využitím kognitivního přístupu k jazyku – ukázat „významy” obou typů sloves jako uspořádané a vzájemně propojené struktury. The author carries out an analysis of the Czech verbs of movement, such as: jít/chodit, běžet/běhat, nést/nosit etc. with the use of cognitive methods of linguistics. She investigates different uses of a particular verb which form a radial structure of the prototype. This enables to allocate the particular “knots” which are also characterized by the radial structure. The author concludes that semantic structures, of the analyzed by her verbs, coincide with several semantic fields.

Present diploma thesis deals with pronunciation specifics in Czech of adult speakers whose mother tongue is Vietnamese. It is based on the assumption of the influence of Vietnamese as a mother tongue on the pronunciation of Czech as a second/foreign language. In the theoretical part there is a description of the phonetic aspect of both languages, especially with regard to their differences. On the basis of the given comparison and derivation of differences on the phonetic level, the author determines the expected pronunciation deviations, i.e. potential interference features in Czech. The practical part of the work is the analysis of audio recordings of Czech by adult Vietnamese speakers (4 people), which will be taken for the purposes of the thesis. The recording consists of a short interview and a read text. Part of the experiment will be the creation of a perception test from speech samples of Vietnamese speakers, which will be assessed by native Czech speakers in terms of intelligibility and the level of effort expended to understand the speech.

Anna Jagošová, Současný dětský folklor Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the current form of children's verbal folklore. It focuses specifically on children's games, , taunts and marginally rhymes and songs with a steady and mostly rhyme structure. The aim of this thesis is to compare the expression of current children's verbal folklore with the expression of traditional children's verbal folklore. Describe their characteristics and compare with the already proposed categorization (Jelínková, 1952, Tucker, 2008), or eventually propose own categorization, and primarily to analyze the expression of children's verbal folklore in terms of the Czech language. Attention will be also paid to the context of children's folklore expressions in the school environment, whether as part of teaching or a leisure activity. The diploma thesis aims to follow current (and traditional) children's folklore interdisciplinary insert of Czech studies and ethnology. Due to ongoing exceptional situation related to Covid - 19 pandemic which limits the possibilities of field research, the main starting material is the already existing collections of children's folklore, especially sources published in books (eg. The present thesis is devoted to the lexical acquisition of bilingual speakers in their first language, specifically Russian-speaking individuals living in the Czech Republic. The aim of the thesis is to follow up on previous foreign and Czech studies, focusing on the lexical acquisition of bilingual speakers. Such lexical acquisition is slower in their first language than the acquisition of comparable monolingual individuals. In the theoretical part, the thesis discusses the concepts of bilingualism, lexical deficit and language dominance, and presents an analysis of several recent foreign and Czech studies on the topic of lexical acquisition of bilingual speakers. In next part, we introduce the Russian-speaking community in the Czech Republic and the speech behaviour of this minority in the Czech Republic. The core of the thesis is a sophisticated experimental research design, which includes a verbal fluency test, a picture naming task and a questionnaire survey. The pre- survey for the picture naming task was conducted with participation of 243 respondents whose mother tongue is Russian. The output of the paper is a design of an experiment that can be followed up by further research. The thesis focuses on an analysis of oral expression and methods of narration of Czech-English bilingual children in the age of 8-10 years. The children who became the subjects of the study are children living in the UK who have one or both parents Czech native speakers. Czech is used to varying degrees in the family communication of these children. The aim of the thesis is to map the means of expression and methods used in the narration and the specifics of the oral production of bilingual speakers. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on the analysis of professional literature, the core of the research part is the collected data in the form of audio recordings of pupils of the 3rd year of Czech School Manchester. The children told stories on the basis of the presented visual support in the form of pictures, in both Czech and English. The acquired recordings were subsequently analysed in terms of morphological, syntactic, lexical and other phenomena related to bilingualism. The Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) was used to analyse the narrative structure. The result of the case study is a summary of the tendencies that could be observed within the collected material.

The presented thesis focuses on garden-path sentence processing in Czech and follows the line of research within the good-enough approach to language comprehension. Some studies within this framework suggest that, after a garden-path sentence is reanalysed, a full and complete syntactic representation is formed, but the system fails to prune the initial misanalysis completely (Slattery et al., 2013; Qian et al., 2017). However, the research of garden-path sentences within the good-enough approach stems from a limited number of syntactic structures. This thesis presents a series of three self-paced reading experiments employing open-ended comprehension questions that aim to test if the conclusions of Slattery et al. (2013) can also be applied to syntactic structures that have not yet been examined within this framework, namely senteces such as "Roztržitý kastelán zamkl průvodkyni na nádvoří koloběžku.". The results are only partially in accordance with the hypothesis. The lingering misanalysis effect was shown only for the sentences with an animate object (these sentences were generally harder to process). Sentences with an inanimate object, that are easier to analyse, show no difference in response accuracy in comparison with similar unambiguous sentences. Keywords: garden-path sentences,...

This bachelor thesis studies child (1-3 years old.) directed speech by Czech-speaking grandparents. Part of this thesis is self-conducted research revolving around a case study of a child and his grandparents, accompanied by a semi-structured interview with the grandparents. The thesis also offers a summary of pre-existing research done in the field of child directed speech that also serves as a basis for proposed hypotheses tested during the self-conducted research. Selected studies were mostly focused on child directed speech by parents. The aim of this study is to analyze the record of communication between grandparent and grandchild. Transcribed data from recordins are available in attachments. Then, there is a comparison of our results with the results of similar studies. The analysis contains a basic characterization of the data, grammar, lexical and pragmatics analysis. Emphasis is put on the lexical analysis, which is focused on diminutives, nouns, and nouns denoting animals. There is studied the phenomenon of shifts in pronominal and verbal person within the grammar analysis. The pragmatics analysis is focused on questions. The results of the analysis show that most phenomena occur to a similar extent in child directed speech by parents and in the speech of grandparents in communication...

The aim of this thesis is to verify sentence imitation as a clinical marker of specific language impairment while controlling memory and morphological richness account as an explanation of problems with acquisition of grammatical markers in preschool children with SLI (basis of these assumptions is explained in the theoretical part of this work). The practical part of this thesis is based on the existing research in Hungarian (Leonard et al., 2009). In contrast to results in Hungarian research the support of morphological richness account is only limited in Czech. Children with SLI were as accurate as younger typically developing children in completions of target forms of verbs and nouns, while completions of target verbs were more successful than completions of target nouns. Near miss errors were prevalent, but not without exception, and relationship between substitutions and frequency in non near-miss errors was not proved. The sentence imitation turned out as a good clinical marker of SLI.

This bachelor's dissertation analyzes the lexical content of contemporary Christian literary works for children. It looks at a corpus of prose story books (original stories, rather than re-told Bible stories), intended for children aged 6-12 that were published between 1990 and 2017. It focuses on figurative names (metaphors and symbols), which are used to help children understand basic Christian truths and terminology (heaven/paradise and eternal life, hell, satan, the Bible) and the persons of the Holy Trinity. It also examines the most frequently used metaphors (contrasting terms such as light and darkness, cleanliness and dirt, wide and narrow pathways) and the symbolism of colour. The metaphors are assessed from the perspective of their origin (in particular to what extent they are rooted in the Bible) and on the basis of their cognitive function, judged from their use within the book's content. The work maps the market for this type of literature and provides an annotated list of existing titles. The bachelor's paper focuses on the comprehension of polysemous expressions and ambiguous syntactic constructions in pre-school children. The goal of the paper is to find out, whether and how children understand polysemy, focusing closer on chosen metaphorical and metonymical transfers, and ambiguity in selected constructions. An original battery of questions has been created for this purpose, the data were being collected by a series of recorded semi-structured interviews with three children. Afterwards, the interviews were transcribed using a combination of the transcription systems GAT 2 and CHAT and analyzed. The collected data also contained interviews with every child's parent to provide closer information about the child and its linguistic, mental and social development. The results of the paper have shown that children understand many of the metaphorical (e. g. personification) and metonymical (e. g. synecdoche) transfers. It seems however, that they perceive them mostly unconsciously (as something given). On the other hand, the collected data have suggested a certain ability of the children to produce the transfers freely, depending on the given context.
