2. Ultrafast Self-powered Visible Blind UV Photodetectors based on MgZnO Vertical Schottky Junction in Crossbar Geometry

Abstract

In order to achieve ultrafast response in MgZnO based self-powered Schottky type photodetectors, it is crucial to decrease both the junction capacitance and carrier transit time. To meet these criteria, Au/MgZnO/ITO Schottky junction photodetectors have been realised in crossbar pattern, wherein the thickness of the MgZnO thin film deposited on patterned ITO-glass substrate is ~ 200 nm and the cross-sectional area of the devices is 0.032 mm2. The semi-transparent 10 nm Au electrode on top of the MgZnO film serves as the Schottky electrode through which light enters the devices. The vertical geometry of the crossbar pattern and the associated small device cross-section results in a low junction capacitance of the devices of ~ 27 pF at zero bias, which in turn produces very fast visible blind self-powered ultraviolet (UV) photoresponse with both the rise and fall times of ~ 1.5 microsecond. The devices also demonstrate a peak responsivity of ~ 49 mA/W at ~ 280 nm with a cut-off wavelength of 336 nm. With the advent of optical biometry ocular measurements are now simpler, quicker, and more precise. The devices have made intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations easier in difficult situations too, such as in cases with extremes of axial lengths, silicone filled eyes, cataract surgery in post-keratoplasty eyes, post Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) eyes, etc. The gold standard for IOL power calculation in the present day is by the use of optical biometry devices. The anatomical measurements by these devices are highly precise and because of these measurements and the incorporation of various IOL power calculation formulas the optical biometry devices give the accurate power and the post-operative visual outcome is highly satisfactory among the patients. The growing use of these devices has made cataract the most commonly performed refractive surgical procedure nowadays. In the current scenario, optical biometry has widespread acceptance in almost all countries and has many advantages over ultrasound or immersion biometry. Cataract surgeons can obtain easy and reliable measurements from these devices. Refractive surprises have also decreased considerably with their use. 5. Enhanced energy harvesting from shadow-effect: mechanism and a new device geometry

Abstract

Energy harvesting from shadow-effect is the generation of electrical power from a Schottky junction when a part of it is kept in shadow and the remaining under illumination. It has been recently invented in Au/n-Si junctions, where modulation of work function of the Au top electrode under contrasting illumination has been invoked to explain the effect. In this paper, a different physical mechanism for energy harvesting from shadow-effect in a Schottky junction is proposed that does not assume change in work function of the top electrode under illumination. The device, termed shadow-effect energy generator (SEG), is modelled as two parallel Schottky junction solar cells, one at the shadowed and the other at the illuminated part, connected with each other in a closed loop circuit through the Si substrate and the top electrode. To test the proposed mechanism, ITO/n-Si junction based SEGs have been fabricated. The values of open circuit voltage in the SEGs have been found to be matching with the difference of photovoltages of the two cells corrected for the potential drop across the Si substrate, that validates the proposed mechanism. To further corroborate the mechanism, the conventional SEG geometry has been modified by applying a continuous ohmic coating at the back of the Si substrates that bypasses the resistance of the Si substrate for current flow and results in higher open circuit voltage and short circuit current. Moreover, ITO/n-Si based SEGs have been found to produce higher output power density compared to that reported in Au/n-Si devices in both the conventional and the new geometry. Although the closed loop present in the equivalent circuit of the SEG devices lead to wastage of harvested energy, the ITO/n-Si SEG devices can nevertheless be used as self-powered sensor for light, object and movement detection as well as for producing electricity from contrasting illumination., Comment: 5 figures, 1 table

6. A Cross-Sectional Study of Various Imaging and Biochemical Biomarkers in Patients with Diabetic Macular Edema in Different Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy

Patients were divided into two groups: Group A – DME with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and Group B - DME with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Group A was further subdivided into three subgroups: A (1) – DME with mild NPDR, A (2) – DME with moderate NPDR, and A (3) – DME with severe NPDR. The primary outcome measure was the association of imaging and biochemical biomarkers with different stages of DR in patients with DME.Results: Out of 100 patients, Group A (1) had 1, Group A (2) 44, Group A (3) 29, and group: B had 29 patients. As Group A (1) had only one patient, we did not include it in the calculation. The overall mean age of the study population was 54.84+9.87 years, with a male preponderance (76%). The HbA1c levels, serum triglyceride level, serum cholesterol level, and microalbuminuria level showed no significant association with different stages of DR (P> 0.05). Still, we found high serum urea levels (p=0.027) in Group B patients. The optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based imaging biomarkers – central subfield thickness (CST), cystoid macular edema (CME), subretinal fluid (SRF), and hyperreflective foci (HRF) – showed no significant association with various stages of DR. The presence of diffuse retinal thickness (DRT) (p=0.04) and the epiretinal membrane (ERM) (p=0.04) showed significant association with Group B patients.Conclusion: The essential biochemical biomarkers such as serum urea levels and DRT and ERM may be considered an important imaging biomarker for the advanced stage of DR.Keywords: imaging biomarkers, biochemical biomarkers, central subfield thickness, diffuse retinal thickness, serum urea level

It is an aggressive neoplasm with dismal outcome because most of the patients present with an advanced-stage disease, which precludes curative surgical options. Therefore, these patients require systemic therapies that typically induce small improvements in overall survival. Hence, it is crucial to identify new and promising therapeutic targets for HCC to improve the current outcome. The liver is a key organ in the signaling cascade triggered by the growth hormone receptor (GHR). Previous studies have shown that GHR signaling stimulates the proliferation and regeneration of liver cells and tissues; however, a definitive role of GHR signaling in HCC pathogenesis has not been identified.Methods: In this study, we used a direct and specific approach to analyze the role of GHR in HCC development. This approach encompasses mice with global (Ghr−/−) or liver-specific (LiGhr−/−) disruption of GHR expression, and the injection of diethylnitrosamine (DEN) to develop HCC in these mice.Results: Our data show that DEN induced HCC in a substantial majority of the Ghr+/+ (93.5%) and Ghr+/- (87.1%) mice but not in the Ghr−/− (5.6%) mice (P < 0.0001). Although 57.7% of LiGhr−/− mice developed HCC after injection of DEN, these mice had significantly fewer tumors than LiGhr+/+ (P < 0.001), which implies that the expression of GHR in the liver cells might increase tumor burden. Notably, the pathologic, histologic, and biochemical characteristics of DEN-induced HCC in mice resembled to a great extent human HCC, despite the fact that etiologically this model does not mimic this cancer in humans. Our data also show that the effects of DEN on mice livers were primarily related to its carcinogenic effects and ability to induce HCC, with minimal effects related to toxic effects.Conclusion: Collectively, our data support an important role of GHR in HCC development, and suggest that exploiting GHR signaling may represent a promising approach to treat HCC.Graphical Abstract: Keywords: hepatocellular carcinoma, growth hormone receptor, Ghr knockout mouse, diethylnitrosamine

Abstract

Synthesis methodology for flakes of p-terphenyl through sublimation under inert atmosphere of argon is presented. Flake morphology of p-terphenyl provides a favourable environment for efficient intercalation of potassium. Ratio of potassium and p-terphenyl is adjusted so as to obtain the desired superconducting phase i.e. potassium doped p-terphenyl (K3C18H14). A clear transition is observed at 107 K under Zero Field Cooled (ZFC) and Field Cooled (FC) mode. But overall the moment is positive possibly due to impurity phase dominating characteristics in the presence of negligible superconducting volume fraction. The M-H loop taken at 20 K shows magnetic behaviour in synthesized K- doped p-terphenyl but upon background subtraction, it does exhibit characteristics of a type-2 superconductor.

Abstract

Sandalwood (Santalum album L.) is one of the most valuable commercially cultivated aromatic species throughout the world. However, the availability of quality planting stock isthe current bottleneck in its establishment on large scale. The major problems, noticed during quality planting stock production in nurseries are scarce knowledge about host-parasite relationship and use of appropriate potting mixture apart from its seed germination. In this regard two experiments were carried out at the College of Forestry, Ponnampet during 2020-2021 to identify suitable host plant and potting mixture. Growth parameters were recorded after 90, 180 and 270 days of transplanting sandal seedlings into treatments. After 270 days of transplanting, the host plant A. lebbeck recorded higher survival of sandal seedlings (81.89 %) and the host plant C. junghuhniana had higher height growth (10.40 cm) with collar diameter 2.33mm. Potting mixture sand, soil, vermicompost, G. intraradices with C. Junghuhninana found effective for height (18.25 cm) and collar diameter (2.58 mm).

Abstract

Three decades before, the gillnet was the major gear in Andaman and Nicobar Islands(ANI), India, because of the less expensive and simple method of operation with non-motorised small dinghies or without craft. Earlier, the gillnet landing was 39% of the total landings and a further report said 27%, which indicated the decrease in gillnet landings. The present study was carried out from 2014 to 2018 at four main fish landing centers (FLCs) Junglighat, Dignabad, Guptapara and Wandoor of ANI to investigate the present status of major gillnet landings. Altogether 1097 visits were carried out at all FLCs and 63.1% of visits occurred at Junglighat. The total landings of all FLCs were 3880.6 tons, of which 98.6% were recorded at Junglighat. The total gillnet landings were 330.4tons, of which Driftnet covered 82.1%, followed by bottom plastic(9.8%) and bottom nylon(8%) gillnets. Significant landings (P<0.0001) of Scombridae family were recorded through Drift gillnet (182.47tons) compared to other families. The family of Carangidae(7.71tons) and Clupeidae(16.54tons) were recorded dominantly through bottom plastic and bottom nylon gillnets, respectively. The gillnetters explored 31 fishing grounds in the South, Middle, North and Little Andamans sectors. The significant (P<0.0001) fish catch was recorded from the South Andaman sector. A total of 17 validation experiments carried out in each Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) and Non-PFZ by using PFZ advisories indicated a significant(P<0.0001) catch from PFZ(3.5:1). There was a decline of 18.5% in the landings of gillnet than earlier studies. It is suggested that the fishermen may follow the PFZ forecast for a better catch. The gillnet fishing to be promoted to under-exploited pelagic fishes of these islands will benefit the gillnetters.
