1. Li3BN2 as a Transition Metal Free, High Capacity Cathode for Li-ion Batteries

Abstract

Li3BN2 is investigated for the first time as a transition metal free, high capacity cathode material for Li-ion batteries. It is shown that α-Li3BN2 can exhibit a specific capacity of 890 mA h g−1 with the charge storage mechanism associated with the valence state change of N ions in the BN2 anion. The specific capacity demonstrated in this study is the highest one ever reported in literature for an intercalation-type cathode material. Further, using the valence state change of N ions as a charge storage mechanism opens the door for designing additional high performance, transition metal free electrodes in the future.

20. Germ cell tumors masquerading as central nervous system sarcoidosis

Abstract

Sarcoidosis is a disease characterized by the presence of numerous tumor-like masses of granular lymphocytes and other immune cells known as granulomas. The disorder generally affects several organ systems; the cause of the disease is not known. In about 5 percent of all cases the brain will be involved, and in about half of these cases the neurological symptoms will be the first noticed by the patients. The diagnosis of central nervous system sarcoidosis is straightforward if the sarcoid masses are present in other organs as well. But if other organ systems are not involved, the diagnosis is uncertain. To illustrate the difficulties of diagnosis, the authors present the cases of two patients with masses in the middle of their brains. In both cases, the unidentified mass was located in the diencephalon, the part of the brain containing the third ventricle and the thalamus. Also in both cases, surgery revealed signs of a granulomatous inflammatory reaction, which was consistent with sarcoidosis. The patients lacked the signs of multisystem sarcoidosis, however, which include elevated amounts of angiotensin-converting enzyme, uveitis (the inflammation of parts of the eye including the iris), and inflammation of the lungs. In both cases, however, the corticosteroid treatment used for sarcoidosis failed to provide any benefit. Furthermore, the brain masses progressed rapidly, in a manner more common among tumors than sarcoids. In one patient, the mass was positively identified as a germ cell tumor after surgery; the patient died of infection several months later. In the other case, the mass was positively identified as a germ cell tumor at autopsy. Germ cell tumors may be especially susceptible to confusion with sarcoidosis since they have a predilection for the same region of the brain. Furthermore, germ cell tumors are often surrounded by a prominent granulomatous inflammatory reaction, which may readily be mistaken for sarcoidosis even upon biopsy. The authors warn that if, despite corticosteroid treatment, there are signs of progression of a brain mass thought to be sarcoidosis, a tumor, especially a germ cell tumor, needs to be considered as a possible alternative diagnosis. Abstract

Forty-eight spinal cord injury victims were implanted with an epidural spinal cord stimulation system to treat spasms that had not satisfactorily responded to medical therapy. All the patients were at least 6 months after the injury. The protocol included assessment by independent examiners preoperatively and at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after the implant. Pre- and postoperative data collection included the frequency and severity of the spasms. Combining the frequency and intensity scores into a 'severity' score provided a more accurate clinical picture. No patient observed neurological deterioration following the surgical procedure or the neurostimulation treatment. A statistically significant reduction in the severity of the spasms was observed in the follow-up evaluations, with results that progressively increased in time. It is appears that spinal cord stimulation is an effective and safe alternative in the management of spasms in spinal cord injury victims. Its exact role in relation to intrathecal baclofen infusion and ablative procedures remains to be defined.

Abstract

Plastic is a broad name given to different polymers with high molecular weight, which can be degraded by various processes. However, considering their abundance in the environment and their specificity in attacking plastics, biodegradation of plastics by microorganisms and enzymes seems to be the most effective process. When plastics are used as substrates for microorganisms, evaluation of their biodegradability should not only be based on their chemical structure, but also on their physical properties (melting point, glass transition temperature, crystallinity, storage modulus etc.). In this review, microbial and enzymatic biodegradation of plastics and some factors that affect their biodegradability are discussed. Plastics have become an important part of modern life and are used in different sectors of applications like packaging, building materials, consumer products and much more. Each year about 100 million tons of plastics are produced worldwide. Degradation is defined as reduction in the molecular weight of the polymer. The Degradation types are (a). Chain end degradation/de-polymerization (b).Random degradation/reverse of the poly condensation process. Biodegradation is defined as reduction in the molecular weight by naturally occurring microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes. That is involved in the degradation of both natural and synthetic plastics.

Abstract

Plastic wastes are posing ever increasing environmental concerns. Recent research works have shown that most of the constituents of plastics can be degraded by microbes and the film plastics can be treated by microbial systems. In this study, poly vinyl chloride (PVC), degrading bacteria’s were isolate and characterize from soil dumped with plastics. The PVC degradating bacterial were identified as E.Coli, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas and Klebsiella. It was observed that maximum degradation by Pseudomonas and degradation after 10 months was 40.53%, 23.06%, 10.92% and 5.32% for Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus and E.Coli respectively.This work concluded that soil contains bacteria’s that have ability to carry degradation of poly vinyl chloride (PVC)
