Mineral additives are widely used in cementitious systems to reduce CO2 emissions. In this context,it was understood that fly ash, an industrial by-product, is the most widely used mineral additive. It is necessaryto examine the binder-water reducing admixture compatibility in cementitious systems containing mineraladditives. The fineness and utilization ratio of mineral additives seriously affect the compatibility in question. Inthis study, the effect of the use of fly ash in different utilization ratios and fineness on the flow value andconsistency retention performance of mortar mixtures containing water-reducing admixture in different ratioswas investigated. For this purpose, 4 different usage dosages of water-reducing admixtures (0%, 1%, 1.5% and2%), 2 different utilization ratios (0, 15% and 30%) and fine fly ash (4000 and 6000 cm2/g) were used. A totalof 20 mortar mixtures were prepared. The flow performance of the prepared mixtures for 60 minutes wasexamined. As expected, the initial and 60th-minute flow values of all mixtures increased with the increase in theuse of water-reducing admixture. It was understood that the change of fly ash fineness did not have a significanteffect on the initial and 60th-minute flow values of the mixtures. Similarly, it was observed that the change inthe utilization ratio of fly ash did not have a great effect on the initial and 60th-minute flow performance in themixtures with no admixtures, 1% and 2% admixture usage dosages. However, it was determined that theincrease in fly ash utilization ratio in mixtures with an admixture usage dosage of 1.5% increased the initial and60th-minute flow values of the mortar mixtures. Also, it was observed that mortar mixtures containing 2%water-reducing admixture generally have the highest consistency retention capacity (95-100%), regardless of flyash fineness and utilization ratio.

Objectives Ege University Medical School initiated system based integrated clinical internship in 2011. The need for a mentor who would closely monitor and guide the student in knowledge and skill gains for every clinical internship block and who would be an academic role model was well established. The aim of this study reports the results of the clinical internship mentoring program in the Ege University Medical School. Methods The Clinical Internship Counseling Committee reviewed similar programs in the literature, conducted focus group discussions, determined the wishes and needs of the students, and developed a mentoring program. Results The program was initiated by announcing the student-mentor matches and the procedure which was based on meetings of the student-mentor at the 1st, 8th and 13th weeks of the integrated internship. This meeting was designed to be a time for the mentor to guide the student to achieve the internship goals, to establish his/her internship progress file and to be an academic role model. At the final evaluation of the mentor, communication between student and the progress in the establishment of the internship progress file contributed to the 5% of the final internship success grade. Conclusions Evaluation of 7 years of experience led to the agreement that the goals of clinical internship program should be integrated into the newly established Student Mentorship Program that starts at the 1st year of the medical school.

Background: The aim of this study was to provide information about the results of the Turkish Cardiovascular Surgery Board written exam, which was held online due to the pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a total of 41 cardiovascular surgeons and residents (39 males, 2 females) in November 21st, 2020 between 10:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M. After the online exam was completed, data on participant information and answers to exam questions were obtained from the information system. Results: Of all participants, 39% were working in university hospitals. A total of 82.9% of the participants were specialists. The total mean score of the participants was 60.3 +/- 10.2 and 53.7% of them were declared successful-passed. Aortic surgery (63%), heart failure surgery (50%), and mitral valve surgery (50%) were the most incorrectly answered questions. Conclusion: With the online exam, the Board gained different experiences regarding exam planning and implementation. The Turkish Cardiovascular Surgery Board did not give up the Board exam during the pandemic period and conducted a reliable written exam with many participants.

Increasing knowledge, technological advances, growing elderly and disabled population, and the need to provide safe and quality patient care over the world have made the healthcare systems more complex. In the last 30 years, the need for interprofessional education has increased. The training and participation of more than two disciplines is defined as interprofessional education. The aim of interprofessional education is to learn how students should work in an interprofessional team and to apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they have learned to future health service delivery. Most of the competencies for interprofessional education are related to teamwork. Communication, leadership and collaboration skills need to be achieved for teamwork. There are many barriers on the basis of the training program and the organization. In addition to the structural change, cultural changes are needed to initiate a reform movement in the interprofessional education in the healthcare system. Critically important interprofessional education should be defended in the framework of how to act and approach all employees of the institution in the same belief, common values and the same way of working together for optimum success.

Background/aim: The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the predictive values of the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and Creatinine Index (CI) in the short-term mortality of maintenance hemodialysis patients and to determine their best cut-offs. Material and Methods: A total of 169 adult hemodialysis patients were included in this retrospective, cross-sectional, and single-center study. The demographic, clinical, and laboratory data of the month in which the patients were included in the study were obtained from their medical files and computer records. All-cause death was the primary outcome of the study during a 12-month follow-up alter baseline GNRI and CI calculations. Results: The mean age of the study population was 57 +/- 16 years (49.7% were women, 15% were diabetic). During the one-year observation period, 19 (11.24%) of the cases died (8 CV deaths). The optimal cut-off value for GNRI was determined as 104.2 by ROC analysis [AUC = 0.682 +/- 0.06, (95% CI, 0.549-0.815), p = 0.01]. The low GNRI group had a higher risk for all-cause and CV mortality compared to the higher GNRI group (p = 0.02 for both in log-rank test). The optimal sex-specific cut-off was 12.18 mg/kg/day for men [AUC = 0.723 +/- 0.07, (95% CI, 0.574-0.875), p = 0.03] and was 12.08 mg/kg/day for females [AUC = 0.649 +/- 0.13, (95% CI, 0.384- 0.914), p = 0.01]. Patients with lower sex-specific CI values had higher all-cause and CV mortality (p = 0.001 and p = 0.009 in log-rank test, respectively). In multivariate cox models, both GNRI [HR = 4.904 (% 95 CI, 1.77-13.56), p = 0.002] and sex-specific CI [HR = 5.1 (95% CI, 1.38-18.9), p = 0.01] predicted all-cause mortality. The association of GNRI with CV was lost [HR = 2.6 (CI 95%, 0.54-13.455), p = 0.22], but low CI had a very strong association with CV mortality [HR = 11.48 (CI 95%, 1.25 -104), p = 0.03]. Conclusion: In hemodialysis patients, GNRI and CI have similar powers in predicting all-cause short-term mortality. The association of CI with all-cause death depends on gender. On the other hand, sex-specific CI predicts CV mortality better than GNRI.

Objectives The aim of this study is to determine the adaptation process of international medical school students to university life in Turkey. Methods The mixed method design study, including all the international students (n=127) studying at Ege University School of Medicine, is employed. Qualitative data were collected from 23 students selected by purposive sampling technique. Two instruments were utilized for collecting data: Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) and Brief COPE. Focus group interviews were performed for qualitative data collection. Results The mean SACQ score of the medical students was found to be 407.44 (SD=68.29). The Academic Adjustment category included the themes of educational goals, different studying habits, accommodation, academic advisor, and scholarship. The Social Adjustment category included the themes of social interaction and support, differences, longing for family, discrimination and its effects on social life. The Personal/Emotional adjustment category included themes of psychological and physiological health problems. The Goal Commitment/Institutional Attachment category included themes of academic and social adaptation as well as the student' communication with education management. Conclusions This study identifies to light critical issues in supporting international students with adaptation problems to university life in Turkey. It is clear that revising the content of education programs to enable international exchange is not sufficient enough by itself to meet the needs of international students.
