Abstract

The business practices such as supply chains have been transformed significantly due to technological advancement and digitalization. It helps enhance organizational efficiency in consumption, production, and overall operation. Additionally, big data within the supply chain management process has considerably assisted businesses in gathering accurate product information, easily tracing a product, maintaining track of distribution cycles and delivering goods as quickly as possible. The research investigates the impact of the circular supply chain (CSC) and big data implementation on firm performance, specifically in the Pakistan Manufacturing Sector. Further, it has investigated digital technologies' mediating role in the firm's performance in the Pakistan manufacturing sector. The research was conducted using quantitative data from the questionnaire survey from 400 participants (i.e., firm managers) working in the Pakistan manufacturing sector. The data were analyzed using the structural equation modeling comprising confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis using SmartPLS. Findings show a negative and significant influence of CSC practices on firm performance in the manufacturing sector of Pakistan. On the contrary, big data implementation positively and significantly impacts the firms' performance. Further, the mediating role of digital technology over firm performance through CSC practices and big data implementation was also found to be positive and significant. The research has contributed to the present state of literature in different ways. Abstract

Big data pipelines are developed to process data characterized by one or more of the three big data features, commonly known as the three Vs (volume, velocity, and variety), through a series of steps (e.g., extract, transform, and move), making the ground work for the use of advanced analytics and ML/AI techniques. Computing continuum (i.e., cloud/fog/edge) allows access to virtually infinite amount of resources, where data pipelines could be executed at scale; however, the implementation of data pipelines on the continuum is a complex task that needs to take computing resources, data transmission channels, triggers, data transfer methods, integration of message queues, etc., into account. The task becomes even more challenging when data storage is considered as part of the data pipelines. Local storage is expensive, hard to maintain, and comes with several challenges (e.g., data availability, data security, and backup). The use of cloud storage, i.e., storage-as-a-service (StaaS), instead of local storage has the potential of providing more flexibility in terms of scalability, fault tolerance, and availability. In this article, we propose a generic approach to integrate StaaS with data pipelines, i.e., computation on an on-premise server or on a specific cloud, but integration with StaaS, and develop a ranking method for available storage options based on five key parameters: cost, proximity, network performance, server-side encryption, and user weights/preferences. 23. A comprehensive analysis for collision and grounding accidents by using a hybrid FTA-FUCOM-ETA method

Abstract

The main contribution of this study is to analyse the causes of navigational accidents, regardless of the type of ship, and to investigate by using a hybrid fault tree analysis, full consistency method, and event tree analysis. We determine the accidents and their known causes between the years of 2014 and 2020 according to IMO GISIS data. Sensitivity analyses are conducted for the operational and unsafe action failures. For collisions, non-compliance with the COLREGs, insufficient lookout, storms, strong winds, and narrow manoeuvre areas causes are found to be the most critical causes. For grounding, heavy weather conditions, insufficient lookout, engine failure, strong winds, and loss of power are the top causes that the countermeasures should be taken. Inspections for the training centres, education of maritime English, more recruitment of seafarers to reduce the workload, and usage of information technology for weather incidents are recommendations for some of the managerial implications.

Abstract

Multi-criteria decision making methods are used to solve numerous problems related to several disciplines such as engineering, management and business. Consistency of a decision making application is of crucial importance because of its dependability, reliability and sustainability. In this study, data production phenomenon is discussed based on consistency of a decision matrix. We complete different tests including (i) 16 tests (different triangular scales) for different 64, 125 and 216 decision matrix sets for four-criteria problems, (ii) 16 tests for different 256, 625 and 1296 decision matrix sets for five-criteria problems. Based on our observations from the results, we find that first level derivation is always consistent. However, the second and higher level derivations exhibit inconsistencies. The results are also valid if the expert evaluations for the same pairwise comparisons are considered as equal (1, 1, 1). This study is expected to improve the reliability results for the future decision making studies.

Abstract

Arctic sea ice melt fast and soon the North Pole will be open water. Besides disadvantages of the global warming to the environment and ecology, it brings some opportunities to the logistics industry. Ice navigation has been conducted intensively in summer seasons of the year, since 2009. Vessels started to move through the Arctic region because ice navigation shortens the route approximately 7.000 nautical miles. This paper focuses on route selection in icy waters. We proposed The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) approach for route selection problem based on the ice-state factors. The indicators of the proposed model involve cost-benefit factors. In this study, the optimal track is selected. Abstract

When Industry 4.0 technologies are utilized in logistics practices, they create a Logistics 4.0 environment, and the key to successfully implementing Logistics 4.0 practices is the human capital of the logistics industry. The human capital of the logistics industry was found to be classified into four major categories, namely operative, supervisor, management, and government. This study aims to develop a new human capital framework that guides the logistics industry towards successfully implementing and managing Logistics 4.0 practices. The significance of this study is to utilize a new framework to shorten the gap between current basic logistics practices into Industry 4.0 practices. An integrative literature review technique was used thoroughly and reviewed and analyzed in order to create the Logistics 4.0 human capital development framework in a manner that satisfies the categories of logistics human capital. A combination of the business logistics management (BLM) framework and Industry 4.0 elements creates a new human capital development (HCD) framework in logistics and supply chains.

Abstract

Marine accident analysis is a sophisticated and complex official interpretation that requires a professional and fair judgment. For accidents such as a collision, contact and other incidents in the maritime field, the judgment mechanism of the courts depends on the decision process of the field experts. Field experts define the “Fraction Defectives” (FDs) of the vessels for the intended case based on the existing evidence and navigational specifications. However, evaluation of human judgment can be limited and problematic in analysing many aspects of a case. In this paper, a pairwise comparison method is used to simplify and clarify the judgment process. We aim to assess marine accidents in a stepwise approach that is inaccurately carried out in a holistic perspective by the field experts. A real accident that occurred in the past is simulated in front of the field experts. After conducting an expert consultation, FDs are re-calculated to compare both the regular judgment and the results in our suggested Generic Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (GF-AHP) approach.
