CaSb$_2$ is the Dirac line-nodal material that exhibits a superconducting (SC) transition at 1.7 K. In spite of its conventional SC state at ambient pressure, the transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ shows a peak structure against hydrostatic pressure. We performed ac magnetic susceptibility and $^{123}$Sb nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on single-crystalline CaSb$_2$ under pressures up to 2.08 GPa. $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ monotonically increased in this pressure region, which is consistent with a previous study. We observed continuous broadening of the NQR spectrum against pressure, which is a sign of unique compression behavior of the lattice. In the normal state, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_1$ is proportional to temperature in all pressure values; typical of a metal. However, 1/$T_1T$ in the normal state is independent of pressure, indicating that the density of states at the Fermi energy $N(E_{\mathrm{F}})$, which is one of the parameters governing $T_{\mathrm{c}}$, is insensitive to pressure. From these results, we conclude that $N(E_{\mathrm{F}})$ does not govern the origin of the enhancement in $T_{\mathrm{c}}$. This is unusual for a weak electron-phonon coupling superconductor. In most superconductors electrons form Cooper pairs in a spin-singlet state mediated by either phonons or by long-range interactions such as spin fluctuations. The superconductor UTe$_2$ is a rare material wherein electrons are believed to form pairs in a unique spin-triplet state with potential topological properties. While spin-triplet pairing may be mediated by ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic fluctuations, experimentally, the magnetic properties of UTe$_2$ are unclear. By way of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements on independently grown UTe$_2$ single crystals we demonstrate the existence of magnetic clusters that gradually freeze into a disordered spin frozen state at low temperatures. Our findings suggest that inhomogeneous freezing of magnetic clusters is linked to the ubiquitous residual linear term in the temperature dependence of the specific heat ($C$) and the low-temperature upturn in $C/T$ versus $T$. The omnipresent magnetic inhomogeneity has potential implications for experiments aimed at establishing the intrinsic low-temperature properties of UTe$_2$., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures

Uranium compounds can manifest a wide range of fascinating many-body phenomena, and are often thought to be poised at a crossover between localized and itinerant regimes for 5f electrons. The antiferromagnetic dipnictide USb2 has been of recent interest due to the discovery of rich proximate phase diagrams and unusual quantum coherence phenomena. Here, linear-dichroic X-ray absorption and elastic neutron scattering are used to characterize electronic symmetries on uranium in USb2 and isostructural UBi2. Of these two materials, only USb2 is found to enable strong Hund's rule alignment of local magnetic degrees of freedom, and to undergo distinctive changes in local atomic multiplet symmetry across the magnetic phase transition. Theoretical analysis reveals that these and other anomalous properties of the material may be understood by attributing it as the first known high temperature realization of a singlet ground state magnet, in which magnetism occurs through a process that resembles exciton condensation.

By means of new muon spin relaxation experiments, we disentangle extrinsic and intrinsic sources of low-temperature bulk magnetism in the candidate topological Kondo insulator (TKI) SmB6. Results on Al-flux grown SmB6 single crystals are compared to those on a large floating-zone grown ^{154}Sm^{11}B6 single crystal in which a 14 meV bulk spin exciton has been detected by inelastic neutron scattering. Below ~ 10 K we detect the gradual development of quasi-static magnetism due to rare-earth impurities and Sm vacancies. Our measurements also reveal two additional forms of intrinsic magnetism: 1) underlying low-energy (~ 100 neV) weak magnetic moment (~ 10^{-2} mu_B) fluctuations similar to those detected in the related candidate TKI YbB12 that persist down to millikelvin temperatures, and 2) magnetic fluctuations consistent with a 2.6 meV bulk magnetic excitation at zero magnetic field that appears to hinder surface conductivity above ~ 4.5 K. We report low-temperature muon spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) measurements on single crystals of the actinide superconductor UTe2. Below 5 K we observe a continuous slowing down of magnetic fluctuations that persists through the superconducting (SC) transition temperature (Tc = 1.6 K), but we find no evidence of long-range or local magnetic order down to 0.025 K. The temperature dependence of the dynamic relaxation rate down to 0.4 K agrees with the self-consistent renormalization theory of spin fluctuations for a three-dimensional weak itinerant ferromagnetic metal. Quantum-mechanical fluctuations between competing phases at $T=0$ induce exotic finite-temperature collective excitations that are not described by the standard Landau Fermi liquid framework. These excitations exhibit anomalous temperature dependences, or non-Fermi liquid behavior, in the transport and thermodynamic properties in the vicinity of a quantum critical point, and are often intimately linked to the appearance of unconventional Cooper pairing as observed in strongly correlated systems including the high-$T_c$ cuprate and iron pnictide superconductors. The presence of superconductivity, however, precludes direct access to the quantum critical point, and makes it difficult to assess the role of quantum-critical fluctuations in shaping anomalous finite-temperature physical properties. Here we report temperature-field scale invariance of non-Fermi liquid thermodynamic, transport, and Hall quantities in a non-superconducting iron-pnictide, Ba(Fe$_{1/3}$Co$_{1/3}$Ni$_{1/3}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, indicative of quantum criticality at zero temperature and zero applied magnetic field. Beyond a linear in temperature resistivity, the hallmark signature of strong quasiparticle scattering, we find the scattering rate that obeys a universal scaling relation between temperature and applied magnetic fields down to the lowest energy scales. Together with the dominance of hole-like carriers close to the zero-temperature and zero-field limits, the scale invariance, isotropic field response, and lack of applied pressure sensitivity suggests a unique quantum critical system that does not drive a pairing instability., Comment: 37 pages, 15 figures

The Kondo insulator SmB6 is purported to develop into a robust topological insulator at low temperature. Yet there are several puzzling and unexplained physical properties of the insulating bulk. It has been proposed that bulk spin excitons may be the source of these anomalies and may also adversely affect the topologically-protected metallic surface states. Here, we report muon spin rotation measurements of SmB6 that show thermally-activated behavior for the temperature dependences of the transverse-field (TF) relaxation rate below 20 K and muon Knight shift below 5-6 K. Our data are consistent with the freezing out of a bulk low-energy (~ 1 meV) spin exciton concurrent with the appearance of metallic surface conductivity. Furthermore, our results support the idea that spin excitons play some role in the anomalous low-temperature bulk properties of SmB6., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The intermediate-valence compound SmB6 is a well-known Kondo insulator, in which hybridization of itinerant 5d electrons with localized 4f electrons leads to a transition from metallic to insulating behavior at low temperatures. Recent studies suggest that SmB6 is a topological insulator, with topological metallic surface states emerging from a fully insulating hybridized bulk band structure. Here we locally probe the bulk magnetic properties of pure and 0.5 % Fe-doped SmB6 by muon spin rotation/relaxation methods. Below 6 K the Fe impurity induces simultaneous changes in the bulk local magnetism and the electrical conductivity. In the low-temperature insulating bulk state we observe a temperature-independent dynamic relaxation rate indicative of low-lying magnetic excitations driven primarily by quantum fluctuations.

We have investigated the charge dynamics and the nature of many-body interactions in La- and Pr- doped CaFe2As2. From the infrared part of the optical conductivity, we discover that the scattering rate of mobile carriers above 200 K exhibits saturation at the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit of metallic transport. However, the dc resistivity continues to increase with temperature above 200 K due to the loss of Drude spectral weight. The loss of Drude spectral weight with increasing temperature is seen in a wide temperature range in the uncollapsed tetragonal phase, and this spectral weight is recovered at energy scales about one order of magnitude larger than the Fermi energy scale in these semimetals. The phenomena noted above have been observed previously in other correlated metals in which the dominant interactions are electronic in origin. Further evidence of significant electron-electron interactions is obtained from the presence of quadratic temperature and frequency-dependent terms in the scattering rate at low temperatures and frequencies in the uncollapsed tetragonal structures of La-doped and Pr-doped CaFe2As2. For temperatures below the structure collapse transition in Pr-doped CaFe2As2 at 70 K, the scattering rate decreases due to weakening of electronic correlations, and the Drude spectral weight decreases due to modification of the low-energy electronic structure., Comment: 13 pages

Single crystals of A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb) were successfully grown using a self-flux method and studied via structural, transport and thermodynamic measurement techniques. The superconducting state properties between the two species are similar, with critical temperatures of 6.1 K and 4.8 K in K2Cr3As3 and Rb2Cr3As3, respectively. However, the emergence of a strong normal state electronic anisotropy in Rb2Cr3As3 suggests a unique electronic tuning parameter is coupled to the inter-chain spacing in the A2Cr3As3 structure, which increases with alkali metal ionic size while the one-dimensional [(Cr3As3)^{2-}]_{\infty} chain structure itself remains essentially unchanged. Together with dramatic enhancements in both conductivity and magnetoresistance (MR), the appearance of a strong anisotropy in the MR of Rb2Cr3As3 is consistent with the proposed quasi-one-dimensional character of band structure and its evolution with alkali metal species in this new family of superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures; to appear in Phys. Thermal conductivity, point contact spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission and Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed on BaFe1.9Pt0.1As2 single crystals obtained from the same synthesis batch in order to investigate the superconducting energy gap structure using multiple techniques. Low temperature thermal conductivity was measured in the superconducting state as a function of temperature and magnetic field, revealing an absence of quasiparticle excitations in the T=0 limit up to 15 T applied magnetic fields. Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy measurements were performed as a function of temperature using the needle-anvil technique, yielding features in the conductance spectra at both 2.5 meV and 7.0 meV scales consistent with a multi-gap scenario. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy probed the electronic band structure above and below the superconducting transition temperature of T_c=23 K, revealing an isotropic gap of magnitude ~3 meV on both electron and hole pockets. Finally, Raman spectroscopy was used to probe quasiparticle excitations in multiple channels, showing a threshold energy scale of 3 meV below T_c. Overall, we find strong evidence for an isotropic gap structure with no nodes or deep minima in this system, with a 3 meV magnitude gap consistently observed and a second, larger gap suggested by point contact spectroscopy measurements. We discuss the implications that the combination of these results reveal about the superconducting order parameter in the BaFe1-xPtxAs2 system and how this relates to similar substituted iron pnictides., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures; invited submission for SUST focus issue on Multicomponent Superconductivity

Using non-resonant Fe K-beta x-ray emission spectroscopy, we reveal that Sr-doping of CaFe2As2 decouples the Fe moment from the volume collapse transition, yielding a collapsed-tetragonal, paramagnetic normal state out of which superconductivity develops. X-ray diffraction measurements implicate the c-axis lattice parameter as the controlling criterion for the Fe moment, promoting a generic description for the appearance of pressure-induced superconductivity in the alkaline-earth-based 122 ferropnictides (AFe2As2). The evolution of the superconducting critical temperature with pressure lends support to theories for superconductivity involving unconventional pairing mediated by magnetic fluctuations.

We report a Fe K\beta x-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in the rare-earth doped iron pnictide Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE=La, Pr, and Nd). In all samples studied the size of the Fe local moment is found to decrease significantly with temperature and goes from ~0.9 \mu_B at T = 300 K to ~0.45 \mu_B at T = 70 K. In the collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase of Nd- and Pr-doped samples (T<70K) the local moment is quenched, while the moment remains unchanged for the La-doped sample, which does not show lattice collapse. Our results show that Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE= Pr and Nd) exhibits a spin-state transition and provide direct evidence for a non-magnetic Fe^{2+} ion in the cT-phase, as predicted by Yildirim. We argue that the gradual change of the the spin-state over a wide temperature range reveals the importance of multiorbital physics, in particular the competition between the crystal field split Fe 3d orbitals and the Hund's rule coupling., Comment: 5 pages and 3 figures. We report $^{75}$As NMR studies on single crystals of rare-earth doped iron pnictides superconductor Ca$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x$=0.075 and 0.15). The $^{75}$As spectra show a chemical pressure effect with doping and a first order structure transition to the collapsed tetragonal phase upon cooling. A sharp drop of the Knight shift is seen below the structural transition, whereas $1/T_1$ is strongly enhanced at low-temperatures. These evidences indicate quenching of Fe local magnetism and short-range ordering of Pr$^{3+}$ moment in the collapsed tetragonal phase. The quenched Fe moment through structure collapse suggests a strong interplay of structure and magnetism, which is important for understanding the nature of the collapsed tetragonal phase., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Structural and electronic characterization of (Ca0.67Sr0.33)Fe2As2 has been performed as a func- tion of pressure up to 12 GPa using conventional and designer diamond anvil cells. The compound (Ca0.67Sr0.33)Fe2As2 behaves intermediate between its end members-CaFe2As2 and SrFe2As2- displaying a suppression of magnetism and the onset of superconductivity. Like other members of the AEFe2As2 family, (Ca0.67Sr0.33)Fe2As2 undergoes a pressure-induced isostructural volume collapse, which we associate with the development of As-As bonding across the mirror plane of the structure. This collapsed tetragonal phase abruptly cuts off the magnetic state, giving rise to superconductivity with a maximum Tc=22.2 K. The maximum Tc of the superconducting phase is not strongly correlated with any structural parameter, but its proximity to the abrupt suppression of magnetism as well as the volume collapse transition suggests that magnetic interactions and structural inhomogeneity may play a role in its development. The pressure-dependent evolution of the ordered states and crystal structures in (Ca,Sr)Fe2As2 provides an avenue to understand the generic behavior of the other members of the AEFe2As2 family., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, neutron scattering and x-ray crystallography measurements were used to study the evolution of magnetic order and crystallographic structure in single-crystal samples of the Ba1-xSrxFe2As2 and Sr1-yCayFe2As2 series. A non-monotonic dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature T0 on chemical pressure is compared to the progression of the antiferromagnetic staggered moment, characteristics of the ordering transition and structural parameters to reveal a distinct relationship between the magnetic energy scale and the tetrahedral bond angle, even far above T0. In Sr1-yCayFe2As2, an abrupt drop in T0 precisely at the Ca concentration where the tetrahedral structure approaches the ideal geometry indicates a strong coupling between the orbital bonding structure and the stabilization of magnetic order, providing strong constraints on the nature of magnetism in the iron-arsenide superconducting parent compounds., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. We report measurements of the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature T_c in single crystal samples of the rare-earth doped superconductor Ca$_{0.73}$La$_{0.27}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. We track T_c with two techniques, via in-plane resistivity measurements and with a resonant tunnel diode oscillator circuit which is sensitive to the skin depth. We show that initially T_c rises steeply with pressure, forming a superconducting dome with a maximum T_c of ~44 K at 20 kbar. We discuss this observation in the context of other electron-doped iron pnictide superconductors, and conclude that the application of pressure offers an independent way to tune T_c in this system., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Aliovalent rare earth substitution into the alkaline earth site of CaFe2As2 single-crystals is used to fine-tune structural, magnetic and electronic properties of this iron-based superconducting system. Neutron and single crystal x-ray scattering experiments indicate that an isostructural collapse of the tetragonal unit cell can be controllably induced at ambient pressures by choice of substituent ion size. This instability is driven by the interlayer As-As anion separation, resulting in an unprecedented thermal expansion coefficient of $180\times 10^{-6}$ K$^{-1}$. Electrical transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal abrupt changes in the physical properties through the collapse as a function of temperature, including a reconstruction of the electronic structure. Superconductivity with onset transition temperatures as high as 47 K is stabilized by the suppression of antiferromagnetic order via chemical pressure, electron doping or a combination of both. Extensive investigations are performed to understand the observations of partial volume-fraction diamagnetic screening, ruling out extrinsic sources such as strain mechanisms, surface states or foreign phases as the cause of this superconducting phase that appears to be stable in both collapsed and uncollapsed structures., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures

Impurity-induced magnetic order has been observed in many quasi-1D systems including doped variants of the spin-Peierls system CuGeO3. TiOCl is another quasi-1D quantum magnet with a spin-Peierls ground state, and the magnetic Ti sites of this system can be doped with non-magnetic Sc. To investigate the role of non-magnetic impurities in this system, we have performed both zero field and longitudinal field muSR experiments on polycrystalline Ti1-xScxOCl samples with x = 0, 0.01, and 0.03. We verified that TiOCl has a non-magnetic ground state, and we found no evidence for spin freezing or magnetic ordering in the lightly-doped Sc samples down to 1.7 K. Our results instead suggest that these systems remain non-magnetic up to the x = 0.03 Sc doping level., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Unlike the ferropnictide superconductors, which crystallize in a tetragonal crystal structure, binary FeAs forms in an orthorhombic crystal structure, where the local atomic environment resembles a highly distorted variant of the FeAs4 tetrahdedral building block of the ferropnictide superconductors. However, like the parent compounds of the ferropnictide superconductors, FeAs undergoes magnetic ordering at low temperatures, with no evidence favoring a superconducting ground state at ambient pressure. We employ pressure-dependent electrical transport and x-ray diffraction measurements using diamond anvil cells to characterize the magnetic state and the structure as a function of pressure. While the MnP-type structure of FeAs persists up to 25 GPa, compressing continuously with no evidence of structural transformations under pressure, features in the magnetotransport measurements associated with magnetism are not observed for pressures in excess of 11 GPa. Where observable, the features associated with magnetic order at ambient pressure show remarkably little pressure dependence, and transport measurements suggest that a dynamical structural instability coupled to the Fermi surface via a strong electron-phonon interaction may play an important role in enabling magnetism in FeAs., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We report muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) measurements of single crystal Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. From measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth $\lambda$ we find that for optimally- and over-doped samples, $1/\lambda(T\to 0)^2$ varies monotonically with the superconducting transition temperature T$_{\rm C}$. Within the superconducting state we observe a positive shift in the muon precession signal, likely indicating that the applied field induces an internal magnetic field. The size of the induced field decreases with increasing doping but is present for all Co concentrations studied., Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

We report superconductivity in single crystals of the new iron-pnictide system BaFe1.9Pt0.1As2 grown by a self-flux solution method and characterized via x-ray, transport, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. The magnetic ordering associated with a structural transition at 140 K present in BaFe2As2 is completely suppressed by substitution of 5% Fe with Pt and superconductivity is induced at a critical temperature Tc=23 K. Full diamagnetic screening in the magnetic susceptibility and a jump in the specific heat at Tc confirm the bulk nature of the superconducting phase. All properties of the superconducting state including transition temperature Tc, the lower critical field Hc1=200 mT, upper critical field Hc2~65 T, and the slope dHc2/dT are comparable in value to the those found in other transition-metal-substituted BaFe2As2 series, indicating the robust nature of superconductivity induced by substitution of Group VIII elements., Comment: 6 pgs, 4 figs, and 1 tbl, slightly revised, updated references

Measurements of the Hall effect, thermoelectric power, magnetic susceptibility and upper and lower critical fields were performed on single crystals of SrFe(2-x)Ni(x)As2, an FeAs-based superconducting system that exhibits a reduced superconducting transition temperature Tc in comparison to most other iron-pnictide superconductors. Studies of the Hall and thermoelectric responses indicate that Ni substitution in this system results in a dominant electron-like response, consistent with electron doping in other similar systems but with a weaker change in the Hall coefficient and a more gradual change in the thermoelectric response with Ni concentration. For optimally doped samples with full superconducting volume fraction, the lower and upper critical fields were determined to be Hc1(1.8 K)= 0.08T and Hc2(0)= 25T, respectively, with lower-Tc samples showing reduced values and indications of inhomogeneous superconductivity. Comparable to other higher-Tc FeAs-based materials, the temperature dependence of the upper critical field, dHc2/dT, is linear over a wide temperature range, and the large values of Hc2(0) greatly exceed conventional estimates of paramagnetic and orbital limits., Comment: 9 pgs, 10 figs, slightly revised, updated references

The internal magnetic field distribution in a mixed state of a cuprate superconductor, Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_x$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ ($T_{\rm c}\simeq28.5$ K, near the optimal doping), was measured by muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) technique up to 60 kOe. The $\mu$SR linewidth $\Lambda(B)$ which exhibits excess broadening at higher fields ($B>5$ kOe) due to field-induced magnetism (FIM), is described by a relation, $\Lambda(B)\propto\sqrt{B}$. This suggests that the orbital current and associated quasiparticle excitation plays predominant roles in stabilizing the quasistatic correlation. Moreover, a slowing down of the vortex fluctuation sets in well above $T_{\rm c}$, as inferred from the trace of FIM observed up to $\sim80$ K, and develops continuously without a singularity at $T_{\rm c}$ as the temperature decreases.

The low-carrier ordered phase below the metal-non-metal transition temperature T_MI ~ 63 K of PrRu4P12 is explored by probing magnetoresistance, magnetic susceptibility, thermoelectric power, and Hall effect on high quality single crystals. All the measured properties exhibit the signature of decimation of the Fermi surface below T_MI and anomalous behaviors below 30 K including a large thermoelectric power ~-200 uV/K and a giant negative magnetoresistance (93% at ~0.4 K). The results indicate an additional structure below 30 K and a semimetal-like ground state. The observed anomalous behaviors are most likely associated with the novel role of c-f hybridization between conduction electrons and Pr 4f electrons, whose crystalline electric field level schemes show drastic change below T_MI., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The appearance of superconductivity at ambient pressures in the undoped iron pnictide parent compound SrFe2As2 is studied experimentally using several techniques and approaches to aid in understanding the nature of this phase. Low temperature magnetization measurements of single crystals of SrFe2As2 reveal diamagnetic screening due to the onset of superconductivity below 21 K, with volume fraction estimates varying between 0 and 15 percent. The effects of heat treatment and cold-working via severe mechanical deformation on the superconducting phase found are studied, showing that superconductivity can be suppressed via modest annealing and reinstated by cold-working., Comment: 5 pages, 4 eps figures, to appear in IEEE TIC-STH Conference Proceedings

Single crystals of the Ni-doped FeAs-based superconductor SrFe2-xNixAs2 were grown using a self-flux solution method and characterized via x-ray measurements and low temperature transport, magnetization, and specific heat studies. A doping phase diagram has been established where the antiferromagnetic order associated with the magnetostructural transition of the parent compound SrFe2As2 is gradually suppressed with increasing Ni concentration, giving way to bulk-phase superconductivity with a maximum transition temperature of 9.8 K. The superconducting phase exists through a finite range of Ni concentrations centered at x=0.15, with full diamagnetic screening observed over a narrow range of x coinciding with a sharpening of the superconducting transition and an absence of magnetic order. An enhancement of bulk superconducting transition temperatures of up to 20% was found to occur upon high-temperature annealing of samples., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Single crystals of SrFe2As2 grown using a self-flux solution method were characterized via x-ray, transport and magnetization studies, revealing a superconducting phase below T_c = 21 K characterized by a full electrical resistivity transition and partial diamagnetic screening. The reversible destruction and reinstatement of this phase by heat treatment and mechanical deformation studies, along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements, indicate that internal crystallographic strain originating from c-axis-oriented planar defects plays a central role in promoting the appearance of superconductivity under ambient pressure conditions in ~90% of as-grown crystals. We report on the muon spin rotation/relaxation study of a pyrochlore oxide, Cd2Os2O7, which exhibits a metal-insulator (MI) transition at T_{MI}~225 K without structural phase transition. It reveals strong spin fluctuation (>10^8/s) below the MI transition, suggesting a predominant role of geometrical spin frustration amongst Os^{5+} ions. Meanwhile, upon further cooling, a static spin density wave discontinuously develops below T_{SDW}~150 K. These observations strongly suggest the occurrence of an anomalous magnetic transition and associated change in the local spin dynamics in undistorted pyrochlore antiferromagnet., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Local magnetic fields in a molecule-based optically chiral magnet [Cr(CN)$_6$][Mn($S$)-pnH(H$_2$O)](H$_2$O) (GN-S) and its enantiomer (GN-R) are studied by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation (muSR). Detailed analysis of muon precession signals under zero field observed below T_c supports the average magnetic structure suggested by neutron powder diffraction. Moreover, comparison of muSR spectra between GN-S and GN-R suggests that they are a pair of complete optical isomers in terms of both crystallographic and magnetic structure. Strong correlation between field-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity is demonstrated for an electron-doped cuprate superconductor, Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ (PLCCO). In addition to the specimen with $x=0.11$ (which is close to the AF phase boundary, $x\simeq0.10$), we show that the one with $x=0.15$ ($T_c\simeq16$ K at zero field) also exhibits the field-induced AF order with a reduced magnitude of the induced moment. The uniform muon Knight shift at a low magnetic field ($\sim10^2$ Oe) indicates that the AF order is not localized within the cores of flux lines, which is in a marked contrast with theoretical prediction for hole-doped cuprates. We have measured the electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance (MR) on single crystals of PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and NdOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$. All the transport properties in PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ are similar to those in LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and NdOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ at high temperatures, indicating the localized character of 4$f$-electrons. The transverse MR both in LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ tends to saturate for wide field directions, indicating these compounds to be uncompensated metals with no open orbit. We have determined the phase diagram of the field induced ordered phase by the MR measurement for all the principle field directions, which indicates an unambiguous evidence for the $\Gamma_{\rm 1}$ singlet crystalline electric field ground state., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, to appear in Physical Review B

We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect and magnetoresistance in the filled-skutterudite superconductor LaRu4P12, which is a reference material of PrRu4P12 that exhibits a metal-insulator (M-I) transition at T_MI~60 K. The observed dHvA branches for the main Fermi surface (FS) are well explained by the band-structure calculation, using the full potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method with the local-density approximation, suggesting a nesting instability with q =(1,0,0) in the main multiply connected FS as expected also in PrRu4P12. Observed cyclotron effective masses of (2.6-11.8)m_0, which are roughly twice the calculated masses, indicate the large mass enhancement even in the La-skutterudites. Comparing the FS between LaRu4P12 and PrRu4P12, an essential role of c-f hybridization cooperating with the FS nesting in driving the the M-I transition in PrRu4P12 has been clarified., Comment: Appeared in Physical Review B

We report on the muon Knight shift measurement in single crystals of LiV2O4. Contrary to what is anticipated for the heavy-fermion state based on the Kondo mechanism, the presence of inhomogeneous local magnetic moments is demonstrated by the broad distribution of the Knight shift at temperatures well below the presumed "Kondo temperature" ($T^*\simeq 30$ K). Moreover, a significant fraction ($\simeq10$ %) of the specimen gives rise to a second component which is virtually non-magnetic. We have measured both magnetoresistance and Hall effect in CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ to clarify the large resistivity state ascribed to the Kondo insulating one and the origin of the phase transition near 0.9 K reported in the specific heat measurement. We found unusual temperature ($T$) dependence both in the electrical resistivity $\rho\sim T^{-1/2}$ and the Hall coefficient $R_{\rm H}\sim T^{\rm -1}$ over the wide temperature range of about two order of magnitude below $\sim30$ K, which can be explained as a combined effect of the temperature dependences of carrier density and carrier scattering by spin fluctuation. An anomaly related with the phase transition has been clearly observed in the transport properties, from which the $H-T$ phase diagram is determined up to 14 T. Taking into account the small entropy change, the phase transition is most probably the spin density wave one. Both the electrical resistivity and Hall resistivity at 0.3 K is largely suppressed about an order of magnitude by magnetic fields above $\sim3$ T, suggesting a drastic change of electronic structure and a suppression of spin fluctuations under magnetic fields., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We report on the magnetic phase diagram of a hole-doped cuprate Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$, which is free from buckling of CuO$_2$ planes, determined by muon spin rotation and relaxation. It is characterized by a quasi-static spin glass-like phase over a range of sodium concentration ($0.05\leq x\leq 0.12$), which is held between long range antiferromagnetic (AF) phase ($x\leq 0.02$) and superconducting phase where the system is non-magnetic for $x\geq 0.15$. The obtained phase diagram qualitatively agrees well with that commonly found for hole-doped high-\tc cuprates, strongly suggesting that the incomplete suppression of the AF order for $x>0.02$ is an essential feature of the hole-doped cuprates., Comment: 5 pages, submitted to Phys. Magnetic penetration depth ($\lambda$) in a pyrochlore superconductor KOs$_2$O$_6$ was studied by means of muon spin rotation (\msr). The temperature dependence of transverse spin relaxation rate, which is proportional to $\lambda ^{-2}$, exhibits a considerable deviation from that expected for the empirical two-fluid model ($\propto T^4$), rather obeying a $T^2$-tendency. Furthermore, $\lambda$ apparently increases with increasing applied field, suggesting the presence of nonlinear and nonlocal effects. We report on muon spin relaxation measurements of the 4f^2-based heavy-fermion superconductor filled-skutterudite PrOs4Sb12. The results reveal the spontaneous appearance of static internal magnetic fields below the superconducting transition temperature, providing unambiguous evidence for the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. We have investigated the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$.The topology of Fermi surface is close to the reference compound LaOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ and well explained by the band structure calculation based on the FLAPW-LDA+U method, where the 4{\it f} electrons are localized. Rare 4f^2-based heavy-fermion behaviors have been revealed recently in Pr-based filled skutterudites PrFe4P12 and PrOs4Sb12. We report measurements of low-temperature specific heat on the 4f^2-based heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12. In magnetic fields above 4.5 T in the normal state, distinct anomalies are found which demonstrate the existence of a field-induced ordered phase (FIOP). The Pr nuclear specific heat indicates an enhancement of the 4f magnetic moment in the FIOP. Utilizing a Maxwell relation, we conclude that anomalous entropy, which is expected for a single-site quadrupole Kondo model, is not concealed below 0.16 K in zero field. We also discuss two possible interpretations of the Schottky-like anomaly at ~3 K, i.e., a crystalline-field excitation or a hybridization gap formation., Comment: 5 pages with 5 figures, a note with two references added in proof

The effect of uniaxial pressure (P_u) on the magnetic susceptibility (X), magnetization (M), and magnetoresistance (MR) of the heavy-fermion metamagnet CeRu2Si2 has been investigated. For the magnetic field along the tetragonal c axis, it is found that characteristic physical quantities, i.e., the temperature of the susceptibility maximum (T_max), the pagamagnetic Weiss temperature (Q_p), 1/X at 2 K, and the magnetic field of the metamagnetic anomaly (H_M), scale approximately linearly with P_u, indicating that all the quantities are related to the same energy scale, probably of the Kondo temperature. The increase (decrease) of the quantities for P_u || c axis (P_u || a axis) can be attributed to a decrease (increase) in the nearest Ce-Ru distance. Consistently in MR and X, we observed a sign that the anisotropic nature of the hybridization, which is believed to play an important role in the metamagnetic anomaly, can be controlled by applying the uniaxial pressure. Magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, and Hall effect have been investigated on single-crystalline Ce_2PdSi_3. This compound is shown to order antiferromagnetically below N'eel temperature (T_N) \~3 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient far below T_N is found to be about 110 mJ/K^2 mol Ce, which indicates the heavy-fermion character of this compound. The transport and magnetic properties exhibit large anisotropy with an interplay between crystalline-electric-field (CEF) and Kondo effects. The sign of thermoelectric power is opposite for different directions at high temperatures and the ordinary Hall coefficient is anisotropic with opposite sign for different geometries, indicating the anisotropic Fermi surface. The CEF analysis from the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility suggests that the ground state is |+/-1/2>. The first and the second excited CEF doublet levels are found to be located at about 30 and 130 K, respectively. Electrical resistivity ($\rho$), magnetoresistance (MR), magnetization, thermopower and Hall effect measurements on the single crystal Gd$_{2}$PdSi$_3$, crystallizing in an AlB$_2$-derived hexagonal structure are reported. The well-defined minimum in $\rho$ at a temperature above N\'eel temperature (T$_N$= 21 K) and large negative MR below $\sim$ 3T$_N$, reported earlier for the polycrystals, are reproducible even in single crystals. Such features are generally uncharacteristic of Gd alloys. In addition, we also found interesting features in other data, e.g., two-step first-order-like metamagnetic transitions for the magnetic field along [0001] direction.
