Search

Glycinamide is considered to be one of the possible precursors of the simplest amino acid glycine. Its only rotational spectrum reported so far has been in the cm-wave region. The aim of this work is to extend its laboratory spectrum into the mm wave region to support its searches in the ISM. Glycinamide was synthesised chemically and was studied with broadband rotational spectroscopy in the 90-329 GHz region. Tunneling across a low energy barrier between two symmetry equivalent configurations of the molecule resulted in splitting of each vibrational state and many perturbations in associated rotational energy levels, requiring careful coupled state fits for each vibrational doublet. We searched for emission of glycinamide in the imaging spectral line survey ReMoCA performed with ALMA toward Sgr B2(N). We report the first analysis of the mm-wave rotational spectrum of glycinamide, resulting in fitting to experimental measurement accuracy of over 1200 transition frequencies for the ground state tunneling doublet, of many lines for tunneling doublets for two singly excited vibrational states, and determination of precise vibrational separation in each doublet. We did not detect emission from glycinamide in the hot core Sgr B2(N1S). We found that glycinamide is at least seven times less abundant than aminoacetonitrile and 1.8 times less abundant than urea in this source. A comparison with results of astrochemical kinetics models for species related to glycinamide suggests that its abundance may be at least one order of magnitude below the upper limit obtained toward Sgr B2(N1S). This means that glycinamide emission in this source likely lies well below the spectral confusion limit in the frequency range covered by the ReMoCA survey. Targetting sources with a lower level of spectral confusion, such as the Galactic Center shocked region G+0.693-0.027, may be a promising avenue. [abridged], Accepted for publication in A&A

We performed high-sensitivity mapping observations of several complex organic molecules around Sagittarius B2 with ARO 12m telescope at 3-mm wavelength. Based on their spatial distribution, molecules can be classified as either "extended" that detected not only in Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(M), or "compact" that only detected toward or near to Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(M). The "extended" molecules including glycolaldehyde (CH2OHCHO), methyl formate (CH3OCHO), formic acid (t-HCOOH), ethanol (C2H5OH) and methyl amine (CH3NH2), while the "compact" molecules including dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3), ethyl cyanide (C2H5CN), and amino acetonitrile (H2NCH2CN). These "compact" molecules are likely produced under strong UV radiation, while "extended" molecules are likely formed under low-temperature, via gas-phase or grain surface reactions. The spatial distribution of "warm" CH2OHCHO at 89 GHz differ from the spatial distribution of "cold" CH2OHCHO observed at 13 GHz. We found evidence for an overabundance of CH2OHCHO compared to that expected from the gas-phase model, which indicates that grain-surface reactions are necessary to explain the origin of CH2OHCHO in Sagittarius B2. Grain-surface reactions are also needed to explain the correlation between the abundances of "cold" CH2OHCHO and C2H5OH. We present a full analysis of a broadband spectral line survey of Sagittarius B2 (Main), one of the most chemically rich regions in the Galaxy located within the giant molecular cloud complex Sgr B2 in the Central Molecular Zone. Our goal is to derive the molecular abundances and temperatures of the high-mass star-forming region Sgr B2(M) and thus its physical and astrochemical conditions. Sgr B2(M) was observed using the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) on board the Herschel Space Observatory in a spectral line survey from 480 to 1907 GHz at a spectral resolution of 1.1 MHz, which provides one of the largest spectral coverages ever obtained toward this high-mass star-forming region in the submillimeter with high spectral resolution and includes frequencies > 1 THz unobservable from the ground. We model the molecular emission from the submillimeter to the far-IR using the XCLASS program. For each molecule, a quantitative description was determined taking all emission and absorption features of that species across the entire spectral range into account. Additionally, we derive velocity resolved ortho / para ratios for those molecules for which ortho and para resolved molecular parameters are available. Finally, the temperature and velocity distributions are analyzed and the derived abundances are compared with those obtained for Sgr B2(N) from a similar HIFI survey. A total of 92 isotopologues were identified, arising from 49 different molecules, ranging from free ions to complex organic compounds and originating from a variety of environments from the cold envelope to hot and dense gas within the cores. Sulfur dioxide, methanol, and water are the dominant contributors. For the ortho / para ratios we find deviations from the high temperature values between 13 and 27 %. Context. The chemical differentiation of seven complex organic molecules (COMs) in the extended region around Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) has been previously observed: CH2OHCHO, CH3OCHO, t-HCOOH, C2H5OH, and CH3NH2 were detected both in the extended region and near the hot cores Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(M), while CH3OCH3 and C2H5CN were only detected near the hot cores. The density and temperature in the extended region are relatively low in comparison with Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(M). Different desorption mechanisms, including photodesorption, reactive desorption, and shock heating, and a few other mechanisms have been proposed to explain the observed COMs in the cold regions. However, they fail to explain the deficiency of CH3OCH3 and C2H5CN in the extended region around Sgr B2. Aims. Based on known physical properties of the extended region around Sgr B2, we explored under what physical conditions the chemical simulations can fit the observations and explain the different spatial distribution of these seven species in the extended region around Sgr B2. Methods. We used the macroscopic Monte Carlo method to perform a detailed parameter space study. A static physical model and an evolving physical model including a cold phase and a warm-up phase were used, respectively. The fiducial models adopt the observed physical parameters except for the local cosmic ray ionization rate ζCR. In addition to photodesorption that is included in all models, we investigated how chain reaction mechanism, shocks, an X-ray burst, enhanced reactive desorption and low diffusion barriers could affect the results of chemical modeling. Results. All gas-grain chemical models based on static physics cannot fit the observations, except for the high abundances of CH3NH2 and C2H5CN in some cases. The simulations based on evolving physical conditions can fit six COMs when T ~ 30−60 K in the warm-up phase, but the best-fit temperature is still higher than the observed dust temperature of 20 K. The best agreement between the simulations and all seven observed COMs at a lower temperature T ~ 27 K is achieved by considering a short-duration ≈102 yr X-ray burst with ζCR = 1.3 × 10−13 s−1 at the early stage of the warm-up phase when it still has a temperature of 20 K. The reactive desorption is the key mechanism for producing these COMs and inducing the low abundances of CH3OCH3 and C2H5CN. Conclusions. We conclude that the evolution of the extended region around Sgr B2 may have begun with a cold, T ≤ 10 K phase followed by a warm-up phase. When its temperature reached about T ~ 20 K, an X-ray flare from the Galactic black hole Sgr A* with a short duration of no more than 100 yr was acquired, affecting strongly the Sgr B2 chemistry. The observed COMs in Sgr B2 are able to retain their observed abundances only several hundred years after such a flare, which could imply that such short-term X-rays flares occur relatively often, likely associated with the accretion activity of the Sgr A* source.

8 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., Rotational spectroscopy provides the most powerful means of identifying molecules of biological interest in the interstellar medium (ISM), but despite their importance, the detection of carbohydrates has remained rather elusive. Here, we present a comprehensive Fourier transform rotational spectroscopic study of elusive erythrulose, a sugar building block likely to be present in the ISM, employing a novel method of transferring the hygroscopic oily carbohydrate into the gas phase. The high sensitivity of the experiment allowed the rotational spectra of all monosubstituted isotopologue species of 13C-12C3H8O4 to be recorded, which, together with quantum chemical calculations, enabled us to determine their equilibrium geometries (reSE) with great precision. Searches employing the new experimental data for erythrulose have been undertaken in different ISM regions, so far including the cold areas Barnard 1, the pre-stellar core TMC-1, Sagittarius B2. Cyclopropenone was first detected in the cold and less dense envelope of Sagittarius B2(N). It was found later in several cold dark clouds and it may be possible to detect its minor isotopic species in these environments. In addition, the main species may well be identified in warmer environments. We aim to extend existing line lists of isotopologs of c-H2C3O from the microwave to the millimeter region and create one for the singly deuterated isotopolog to facilitate their detections in space. Furthermore, we aim to extend the line list of the main isotopic species to the submillimeter region and to evaluate an equilibrium structure of the molecule. We employed a cyclopropenone sample in natural isotopic composition to investigate the rotational spectra of the main and 18O-containing isotopologs as well as the two isotopomers containing one 13C atom. Spectral recordings of the singly and doubly deuterated isotopic species were obtained using a cyclopropenone sample highly enriched in deuterium. We recorded rotational transitions in the 70-126 GHz and 160-245 GHz regions for all isotopologs and also in the 342-505 GHz range for the main species. Quantum-chemical calculations were carried out to evaluate initial spectroscopic parameters and the differences between ground-state and equilibrium rotational parameters in order to derive semi-empirical equilibrium structural parameters. We determined new or improved spectroscopic parameters for six isotopologs and structural parameters according to different structure models. The spectroscopic parameters are accurate enough to identify minor isotopic species at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths while those of the main species are deemed to be reliable up to 1 THz. Background: Peptide bonds are among the fundamental building blocks of life, polymerizing amino acids to form proteins that make up the structural components of living cells and regulate biochemical processes. The detection of glycine by NASA in comet Wild 2 in 2009 suggests the possibility of the formation of biomolecules in extraterrestrial environments through the interstellar medium. Detected in the dense molecular cloud Sagittarius B2, acetamide is the largest molecule containing a peptide bond and is hypothesized to be the precursor to all amino acids; as such, viability of its formation is of important biological relevance. Methods: Under a proposed mechanism of ammonia and ketene reactants, which have also been detected in dense molecular clouds in the ISM, the reaction pathway for the formation of acetamide was modelled using quantum chemical calculations in Gaussian16, using Austin-Frisch-Petersson functional with dispersion density functional theory at a 6-31G(d) basis set level of theory to optimize geometries and determine the thermodynamic properties for the reaction. Stability of the reactants, transition states, and products were examined to establish a reasonable mechanism. Conclusion: Product formation of acetamide was found to be highly exergonic and exothermic with a low energy barrier, suggesting a mechanism that is viable in the extreme density and temperature conditions found in ISM.

In this paper we present the CMZoom Survey's catalog of compact sources (< 10'', ~0.4pc) within the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). CMZoom is a Submillimeter Array (SMA) large program designed to provide a complete and unbiased map of all high column density gas (N(H$_2$) $\geq$ 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) of the innermost 500pc of the Galaxy in the 1.3mm dust continuum. We generate both a robust catalog designed to reduce spurious source detections, and a second catalog with higher completeness, both generated using a pruned dendrogram. In the robust catalog, we report 285 compact sources, or 816 in the high completeness catalog. These sources have effective radii between 0.04-0.4 pc, and are the potential progenitors of star clusters. The masses for both catalogs are dominated by the Sagittarius B2 cloud complex, where masses are likely unreliable due to free-free contamination, uncertain dust temperatures, and line-of-sight confusion. Given the survey selection and completeness, we predict that our robust catalog accounts for more than ~99% of compact substructure capable of forming high mass stars in the CMZ. Aminoacetonitrile, a molecule detected in the interstellar medium only towards the star-forming region Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) thus far, is considered an important prebiotic species. To date, observations were limited to ground state emission lines, whereas transitions from within vibrationally excited states remained undetected. We wanted to accurately determine the energies of the low-lying vibrational states of aminoacetonitrile, which are expected to be populated in Sgr B2(N1), the main hot core of Sgr B2(N). This step is fundamental in order to properly evaluate the vibration-rotation partition function of aminoacetonitrile as well as the line strengths of the rotational transitions of its vibrationally excited states. This is necessary to derive accurate column densities and secure the identification of these transitions in astronomical spectra. The far-infrared ro-vibrational spectrum of aminoacetonitrile has been recorded in absorption against a synchrotron source of continuum emission. Three bands, corresponding to the lowest vibrational modes of aminoacetonitrile, were observed in the frequency region below 500 cm$^{-1}$. The combined analysis of ro-vibrational and pure rotational data allowed us to prepare new spectral line catalogs for all the states under investigation. We used the imaging spectral line survey ReMoCA performed with ALMA to search for vibrationally excited aminoacetonitrile toward Sgr B2(N1). On the basis of these spectroscopic predictions, we report the interstellar detection of aminoacetonitrile in its $v_{11}=1$ and $v_{18}=1$ vibrational states toward Sgr B2(N1) in addition to emission in its vibrational ground state. The intensities of the identified $v_{11}=1$ and $v_{18}=1$ lines are consistent with the detected $v=0$ lines under LTE at a temperature of 200 K for an aminoacetonitrile column density of $1.1 \times 10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$., 14 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

G+0.693-0.03 is a quiescent molecular cloud located within the Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) star-forming complex. Recent spectral surveys have shown that it represents one of the most prolific repositories of complex organic species in the Galaxy. The origin of such chemical complexity, along with the small-scale physical structure and properties of G+0.693-0.03, remains a mystery. In this paper, we report the study of multiple molecules with interferometric observations in combination with single-dish data in G+0.693-0.03. Despite the lack of detection of continuum source, we find small-scale (0.2 pc) structures within this cloud. The analysis of the molecular emission of typical shock tracers such as SiO, HNCO, and CH$_3$OH unveiled two molecular components, peaking at velocities of 57 and 75 km s$^{-1}$. They are found to be interconnected in both space and velocity. The position-velocity diagrams show features that match with the observational signatures of a cloud-cloud collision. Additionally, we detect three series of class \rom{1} methanol masers known to appear in shocked gas, supporting the cloud-cloud collision scenario. From the maser emission we provide constraints on the gas kinetic temperatures ($\sim$30-150 K) and H$_2$ densities (10$^4$-10$^5$ cm$^{-2}$). These properties are similar to those found for the starburst galaxy NGC253 also using class \rom{1} methanol masers, suggested to be associated with a cloud-cloud collision. We conclude that shocks driven by the possible cloud-cloud collision is likely the most important mechanism responsible for the high level of chemical complexity observed in G+0.693-0.03., 18 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Molecules in diffuse and translucent clouds experience cooling as a result of radiation and less excitation from collisions. However, rotation around a molecular axis of acetonitrile, CH3CN, cannot be cooled by radiation, causing rotational populations to concentrate at the J = K levels. We aim to search for absorption lines of CH3CN having J = K level concentrations in diffuse and translucent clouds. The JK = 43–33 transition at 73.6 GHz was investigated toward Sgr B2(M) in the Galactic Centre region and other sources, using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. Based on the absorption lines detected toward Sgr B2(M), a radiation temperature of 2.8 ± 0.5 K, kinetic temperature of 88 ± 29 K and column density of (1.35 ± 0.14) × 1014 cm−2 were derived for this molecule, revealing extremely concentrated J = K levels due to the lower excitation temperature and higher kinetic temperature. The absorption lines occurred at a velocity of 64 km s−1. The results confirm that CH3CN with J = K level concentrations exists in the envelope of Sgr B2(M).

Aminoacetonitrile (NH2CH2CN) was detected in the interstellar medium (ISM) one decade ago in the course of a spectral survey of the hot molecular core Sagittarius (Sgr) B2(N) with the IRAM 30 m telescope. With the advent of sensitive telescopes such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the degree of chemical complexity in the ISM can be further explored. In the family of aminoacetonitrile, the next stage in complexity with one additional CH2 group is aminopropionitrile. This molecule has two structural isomers, a chain-like (3-aminopropionitrile, NH2CH2CH2CN) and a branched, chiral one (2-aminopropionitrile, CH3CH(NH2) CN). The latter was studied in the laboratory a few years ago and was not detected in the IRAM 30 m survey. We present the search for both isomers in the EMoCA (Exploring Molecular Complexity with ALMA) survey, a sensitive spectral survey of Sgr B2(N) performed with ALMA. The rotational spectrum of 3-aminopropionitrile has been recorded in laboratory with a submillimeter spectrometer using solid-state sources. Helped by ab initio calculations performed for the different possible conformations, we present here the analysis based on a Watson Hamiltonian for an asymmetric one-top rotor in A-reduction performed in the frequency range 150–500 GHz for two conformers. More than 6200 lines of the ground-state and lowest excited vibrational states, corresponding to more than 8200 transitions, were assigned in the experimental spectrum. Partition functions, including the vibrational contribution of these states, and predictions in the JPL-CDMS catalog format were determined in order to search for both conformers of 3-aminopropionitrile in Sgr B2(N). Neither 3-aminopropionitrile, nor 2-aminopropionitrile are detected. The derived upper limits imply that they are at least 12 and 5 times less abundant than aminoacetonitrile, respectively. A comparison to ethyl cyanide and n-propyl cyanide detected in this source suggests that an improvement by a factor three in sensitivity may be sufficient to detect 3-aminopropionitrile, which should be within the range of our on-going follow-up project with ALMA.

Peptide bonds, as the molecular bridges that connect amino acids, are crucial to the formation of proteins. Searches and studies of molecules with embedded peptide-like bonds are thus important for the understanding of protein formation in space. Here we report the first tentative detection of propionamide (C2H5CONH2), the largest peptide-like molecule detected in space toward Sagittarius B2(N1) at a position called N1E that is slightly offset from the continuum peak. A new laboratory measurements of the propionamide spectrum were carried out in the 9-461 GHz, which provide good opportunity to check directly for the transition frequencies of detected interstellar lines of propionamide. Our observing result indicates that propionamide emission comes from the warm, compact cores in Sagittarius B2, in which massive protostellars are forming. The column density of propionamide toward Sgr B2(N1E) was derived to be 1.5\times 10^{16} cm^-2, which is three fifths of that of acetamide, and one nineteenth of that of formamide. This detection suggests that large peptide-like molecules can form and survive during star-forming process and may form more complex molecules in the interstellar medium. Rotational spectra of methyl cyanide were recorded newly and were analyzed together with existing spectra to extend the global model of low-lying vibrational states and their interactions to υ 4 = 1 at 920 cm−1. The rotational spectra cover large portions of the 36–1439 GHz region and reach quantum numbers J and K of 79 and 16, respectively. Information on the K level structure of CH3CN is obtained from IR spectra. A spectrum of 2 ν 8 around 717 cm−1, analyzed in our previous study, covered also the ν 4 band. The assignments in this band cover 880–952 cm−1, attaining quantum numbers J and K of 61 and 13, respectively. The most important interaction of υ 4 = 1 appears to be with υ 8 = 3 , Δ K = 0 , Δ l = + 3 , a previously characterized anharmonic resonance. We report new analyses of interactions with Δ K = - 2 and Δ l = + 1 , with Δ K = - 4 and Δ l = - 1 , and with Δ K = - 6 and Δ l = - 3 ; these four types of interactions connect all l substates of υ 8 = 3 in energy to υ 4 = 1 . A known Δ K = - 2 , Δ l = + 1 interaction with υ 7 = 1 was also analyzed, and investigations of the Δ K = + 1 , Δ l = - 2 and Δ K = + 3 , Δ l = 0 resonances with υ 8 = 2 were improved, as were interactions between successive states with υ 8 ⩽ 3 , mainly through new υ 8 ⩽ 2 rotational data. A preliminary single state analysis of the υ 4 = υ 8 = 1 state was carried out based on rotational transition frequencies and on ν 4 + ν 8 - ν 8 hot band data. A considerable fraction of the K levels was reproduced within uncertainties in its entirety or in part, despite obvious widespread perturbations in υ 4 = υ 8 = 1 . In addition to the interstellar detection of rotational transitions of methyl cyanide from within all vibrational states up to υ 4 = 1 , we report the tentative detection of υ 4 = υ 8 = 1 toward the main hot molecular core of the protocluster Sagittarius B2(N) employing the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array.

Isopropyl cyanide was recently detected in space as the first branched alkyl compound. Its abundance with respect to n-propyl cyanide in the Galactic center source Sagittarius B2(N2) is about 0.4. Astrochemical model calculations suggest that for the heavier homologue butyl cyanide the branched isomers dominate over the unbranched n-butyl cyanide and that 2-cyanobutane is the most abundant isomer. We have studied the rotational spectrum of 2-cyanobutane between 2 and 24 GHz using Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and between 36 and 402 GHz employing (sub)millimeter absorption spectroscopy. Transitions of the lowest energy conformer were identified easily. Its rotational spectrum is very rich, and the quantum numbers J and Ka reach values of 111 and 73, respectively. This wealth of data yielded rotational and centrifugal distortion parameters up to tenth order, diagonal and one off-diagonal 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling parameters, and one nuclear spin–rotation coupling parameter. The giant molecular cloud Sagittarius B2 (hereafter SgrB2) is the most massive region with ongoing high-mass star formation in the Galaxy. In the southern region of the 40-pc large envelope of SgrB2, we encounter the SgrB2(DS) region which hosts more than 60 high-mass protostellar cores distributed in an arc shape around an extended HII region. We use the Very Large Array in its CnB and D configurations, and in the frequency bands C (4--8 GHz) and X (8--12 GHz) to observe the whole SgrB2 complex. Continuum and radio recombination line maps are obtained. We detect radio continuum emission in SgrB2(DS) in a bubble-shaped structure. From 4 to 12 GHz, we derive a spectral index between -1.2 and -0.4, indicating the presence of non-thermal emission. We decompose the contribution from thermal and non-thermal emission, and find that the thermal component is clumpy and more concentrated, while the non-thermal component is more extended and diffuse. The radio recombination lines in the region are found to be not in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) but stimulated by the non-thermal emission. The thermal free-free emission is likely tracing an HII region ionized by an O7 star, while the non-thermal emission can be generated by relativistic electrons created through first-order Fermi acceleration. Context. As the number of complex organic molecules (COMs) detected in the interstellar medium increases, it becomes even more important to place meaningful constraints on the origins and formation pathways of such chemical species. The molecular cloud Sagittarius B2(N) is host to several hot molecular cores in the early stage of star formation, where a great variety of COMs are detected in the gas phase. Given its exposure to the extreme conditions of the Galactic center (GC) region, Sgr B2(N) is one of the best targets to study the impact of environmental conditions on the production of COMs. Aims. Our main goal is to characterize the physico-chemical evolution of Sgr B2(N)’s sources in order to explain their chemical differences and constrain their environmental conditions. Methods. The chemical composition of Sgr B2(N)’s hot cores, N2, N3, N4, and N5 is derived by modeling their 3 mm emission spectra extracted from the Exploring Molecular Complexity with ALMA (EMoCA) imaging spectral line survey performed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We derived the density distribution in the envelope of the sources based on the masses computed from the ALMA dust continuum emission maps. We used the radiative transfer code RADMC-3D to compute temperature profiles and inferred the current luminosity of the sources based on the COM rotational temperatures derived from population diagrams. We used published results of 3D radiation-magnetohydrodynamical (RMHD) simulations of high-mass star formation to estimate the time evolution of the source properties. We employed the astrochemical code MAGICKAL to compute time-dependent chemical abundances in the sources and to investigate how physical properties and environmental conditions influence the production of COMs. Results. The analysis of the abundances of 11 COMs detected toward Sgr B2(N2-N5) reveals that N3 and N5 share a similar chemical composition while N2 differs significantly from the other sources. We estimate the current luminosities of N2, N3, N4, and N5 to be 2.6 × 105 L⊙, 4.5 × 104 L⊙, 3.9 × 105 L⊙, and 2.8 × 105 L⊙, respectively. We find that astrochemical models with a cosmic-ray ionization rate of 7 × 10−16 s−1 best reproduce the abundances with respect to methanol of ten COMs observed toward Sgr B2(N2-N5). We also show that COMs still form efficiently on dust grains with minimum dust temperatures in the prestellar phase as high as 15 K, but that minimum temperatures higher than 25 K are excluded. Conclusions. The chemical evolution of Sgr B2(N2-N5) strongly depends on their physical history. A more realistic description of the hot cores’ physical evolution requires a more rigorous treatment with RMHD simulations tailored to each hot core.

Methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) is a known interstellar molecule with abundances high enough that the detection of some of its minor isotopologues is promising. The present study aims at providing accurate spectroscopic parameters for the (13)CH3SH isotopologue to facilitate its identification in the interstellar medium at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths. Through careful analysis of recent CH3SH spectra from 49-510 GHz and 1.1-1.5 THz recorded at natural isotopic composition, extensive assignments were possible not only for the ground torsional state of (13)CH3SH, but also in the first and second excited states. The torsion-rotation spectrum displays complex structure due to the large-amplitude internal rotation of the (13)CH3 group, similar to the main and other minor isotopic species of methyl mercaptan. The assigned transition frequencies have been fitted to within experimental error with a 52-parameter model employing the RAM36 programme. With predictions based on this fit, (13)CH3SH was searched for in spectra from the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) towards the Galactic centre source Sgr B2(N2). Radio observations at metre-centimetre wavelengths shed light on the nature of the emission of HII regions. Usually this category of objects is dominated by thermal radiation produced by ionised hydrogen, namely protons and electrons. However, a number of observational studies have revealed the existence of HII regions with a mixture of thermal and non-thermal radiation. The latter represents a clue as to the presence of relativistic electrons. However, neither the interstellar cosmic-ray electron flux nor the flux of secondary electrons, produced by primary cosmic rays through ionisation processes, is high enough to explain the observed flux densities. We investigate the possibility of accelerating local thermal electrons up to relativistic energies in HII region shocks. We assumed that relativistic electrons can be accelerated through the first-order Fermi acceleration mechanism and we estimated the emerging electron fluxes, the corresponding flux densities, and the spectral indexes. We find flux densities of the same order of magnitude of those observed. In particular, we applied our model to the "deep south" (DS) region of Sagittarius B2 and we succeeded in reproducing the observed flux densities with an accuracy of less than 20% as well as the spectral indexes. The model also gives constraints on magnetic field strength ($0.3-4$ mG), density ($1-9\times10^4$ cm$^{-3}$), and flow velocity in the shock reference frame ($33-50$ km s$^{-1}$) expected in DS. We suggest a mechanism able to accelerate thermal electrons inside HII regions through the first-order Fermi acceleration. Context. Methoxyacetaldehyde belongs to a group of structural isomers with the general formula C3H6O2, of which methyl acetate and ethyl formate are known interstellar molecules. Rotational data available for methoxyacetaldehyde are limited to 40 GHz, which makes predictions at higher frequencies rather uncertain.Aims. The aim of this work is to provide accurate experimental frequencies of methoxyacetaldehyde in the millimeter-wave region to support its detection in the interstellar medium.Methods. The rotational spectrum of methoxyacetaldehyde was recorded at room-temperature from 75 to 120 GHz and from 170 to 310 GHz using the millimeter-wave spectrometer in Valladolid. Additional measurements were also performed at conditions of supersonic expansion from 6 to 18 GHz. The assigned rotational transitions were analyzed using theS-reduced semirigid-rotor Hamiltonian.Results. We newly assigned over 1000 lines for the most stable conformer of methoxyacetaldehyde in its ground state and five lowest excited vibrational states, and precise sets of spectroscopic constants were obtained. We searched for spectral features of methoxyacetaldehyde in the high-mass star-forming regions Orion KL and Sagittarius B2, as well as in the cold dark cloud Barnard 1 (B1-b). No lines belonging to methoxyacetaldehyde were detected above the detection limit of our data. We provide upper limits to the methoxyacetaldehyde colum density in these sources.

Ethanimine (CH3CHNH) is an important prebiotic molecule since it is a precursor of amino acid $\alpha $ -alanine in Strecker synthesis. Two isomers (E and Z) of ethanimine were detected in the molecular cloud Sagittarius B2 north during GBT-PRIMOS survey. A possible radical-molecule reaction pathway has been proposed for the formation of ethanimine in the interstellar medium (ISM) from some previously detected interstellar molecules like methylene (both triplet CH2 (3B1) and singlet CH2 (1A1)) and methyenimine (CH2NH). The mechanism has been studied in the gas phase and in water ice with the help of density functional theory at B2PLYPD/6-311++G (2d, p) level of theory. It is observed that E-ethanimine forms efficiently in gas phase but ice reactions are favorable only in the hot core of molecular clouds. Same is true for the formation of Z-ethanimine which forms only at the surface of water cluster as the height of entrance barrier for formation of Z-ethanimine is similar to that of E-ethanimine. Isomerization from E to Z form is also studied and found to be forbidden due to large entrance barrier. Out of the two reaction system CH2 (3B1) + CH2NH and CH2 (1A1) + CH2NH, later is more favorable then the former one due to the small entrance barrier. Still, much of the detected abundance of ethanimine comes from the reaction of CH2 (3B1) with CH2NH as since CH2 (1A1) has very low abundance compared to the CH2 (3B1) in ISM. The proposed pathway seems to be a promising candidate for the ethanimine formation in ISM.

Context. Relatively high abundances of methyl isocyanate (CH3NCO), a methyl derivative of isocyanic acid (HNCO), found in the Orion KL and Sgr B2 molecular clouds suggest that its ethyl derivative, ethyl isocyanate (CH3CH2NCO), may also be present. Aims. The aim of this work is to provide accurate experimental frequencies of ethyl isocyanate in its ground and excited vibrational states in the millimeter wave region to support searches for it in the interstellar medium. Methods. The rotational spectrum of ethyl isocyanate was recorded at room temperature from 80 to 340 GHz using the millimeter wave spectrometer in Valladolid. Assigned rotational transitions were analyzed using the S -reduced semirigid-rotor Hamiltonian. Results. More than 1100 distinct frequency lines were analyzed for the ground vibrational state of the cis conformer as well as for three vibrational satellites corresponding to successive excitation of the lowest-frequency C–N torsional mode. Newly determined rotational and centrifugal distortion constants were used for searches of spectral features of ethyl isocyanate in Orion KL and Sgr B2 clouds. Upper limits to CH3CH2NCO in these high-mass star-forming regions were obtained.

C-cyanomethanimine (HNCHCN), existing in the two $Z$ and $E$ isomeric forms, is a key prebiotic molecule, but, so far, only the $E$ isomer has been detected toward the massive star-forming region. Sagittarius B2(N) using transitions in the radio wavelength domain. With the aim of detecting HNCHCN in Sun-like-star forming regions, the laboratory investigation of its rotational spectrum has been extended to the millimeter-/submillimeter-wave (mm-/submm-) spectral window in which several unbiased spectral surveys have been already carried out. High-resolution laboratory measurements of the rotational spectrum of C-cyanomethanimine were carried out in the 100-420 GHz range using a frequency-modulation absorption spectrometer. We then searched for the C-cyanomethanimine spectral features in the mm-wave range using the high-sensitivity and unbiased spectral surveys obtained with the IRAM 30-m antenna in the ASAI context, the earliest stages of star formation from starless to evolved Class I objects being sampled. For both the $Z$ and $E$ isomers, the spectroscopic work has led to an improved and extended knowledge of the spectroscopic parameters, thus providing accurate predictions of the rotational signatures up to $\sim$700 GHz. So far, no C-cyanomethanimine emission has been detected toward the ASAI targets, and upper limits of the column density of $\sim$ 10$^{11}$--10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ could only be derived. Consequently, the C-cyanomethanimine abundances have to be less than a few 10$^{-10}$ for starless and hot-corinos. A less stringent constraint, $\leq$ 10$^{-9}$, is obtained for shocks sites. The combination of the upper limits of the abundances of C-cyanomethanimine together with accurate laboratory frequencies up to $\sim$ 700 GHz poses the basis for future higher sensitivity searches around Sun-like-star forming regions., 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. We present results from radiative transfer modeling of the continuum emission towards Sagittarius B2 (hereafter Sgr B2). We have developed a radiative transfer framework – Pandora – that employs RADMC-3D (Dullemond 2012) for a self-consistent determination of the dust temperature. With this pipeline, we have set-up a single model that consistently reproduces the thermal dust and free-free continuum emission of Sgr B2 spanning four orders of magnitude in spatial scales (0.02–45 pc) and two orders of magnitude in frequency (20–4000 GHz).

We report the detection of widespread CH$_2$OHCHO and HOCH$_2$CH$_2$OH emission in Galactic center giant molecular cloud Sagittarius B2 using the Shanghai Tianma 65m Radio Telescope. Our observations show for the first time that the spatial distribution of these two important prebiotic molecules extends over 15 arc-minutes, corresponding to a linear size of approximately 36 pc. These two molecules are not just distributed in or near the hot cores. The abundance of these two molecules seems to decrease from the cold outer region to the central region associated with star-formation activity. Results present here suggest that these two molecules are likely to form through a low temperature process. Recent theoretical and experimental studies demonstrated that prebiotic molecules can be efficiently formed in icy grain mantles through several pathways. However, these complex ice features cannot be directly observed, and most constraints on the ice compositions come from millimeter observations of desorbed ice chemistry products. The high-mass star forming sites SgrB2(M) and SgrB2(N) have been the target of numerous studies, revealing e.g. a rich chemistry. We want to characterize their physical and chemical structure using ALMA high-angular resolution observations at mm wavelengths, reaching spatial scales of about 4000 au, and covering the whole band 6 (from 211 to 275 GHz). In order to determine the continuum emission in line-rich sources, we use a new statistical method: STATCONT. We detect 27 continuum sources in SgrB2(M) and 20 in SgrB2(N). We study the continuum emission across the ALMA band 6, and compare it with previous SMA 345 GHz and VLA 40 GHz observations, to study the nature of the sources detected. The brightest sources are dominated by (partially optically thick) dust emission, while there is an important degree of contamination from ionized gas free-free emission in weaker sources. While the total mass in SgrB2(M) is distributed in many fragments, most of the mass in SgrB2(N) arises from a single object, with filamentary-like structures converging towards the center. There seems to be a lack of low-mass dense cores in both regions. We determine H2 volume densities for the cores of about 10^5-10^7 Msun pc^-3, one to two orders of magnitude higher than the stellar densities of super star clusters. In general, SgrB2(N) is chemically richer than SgrB2(M). There seems to be a correlation between the chemical richness and the mass of the fragments, with more massive clumps being more chemically rich. Both SgrB2(N) and SgrB2(M) harbour a cluster of hot molecular cores. We compare the continuum images with predictions from a detailed 3D radiative transfer model that reproduces the structure of SgrB2 from 45 pc down to 100 au. Propargyl alcohol (HC2CH2OH, PA) has yet to be observed in the interstellar medium (ISM) although one of its stable isomers, propenal (CH2CHCHO), has already been detected in Sagittarius B2(N) with the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in the frequency range $18-26$ GHz. In this paper, we investigate the formation of propargyl alcohol along with one of its deuterated isotopomers, HC2CH2OD(OD-PA), in a dense molecular cloud. Various pathways for the formation of PA in the gas and on ice mantles surrounding dust particles are discussed. We use a large gas-grain chemical network to study the chemical evolution of PA and its deuterated isotopomer. Our results suggest that gaseous HC2CH2OH can most likely be detected in hot cores or in collections of hot cores such as the star-forming region Sgr B2(N). A simple LTE (Local thermodynamic equilibrium) radiative transfer model is employed to check the possibility of detecting PA and OD-PA in the millimeter-wave regime. In addition, we have carried out quantum chemical calculations to compute the vibrational transition frequencies and intensities of these species in the infrared for perhaps future use in studies with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures (Accepted for the publication in Molecular Astrophysics)

Context. A recently published astronomical detection of all three doubly 13C-substituted ethyl cyanides toward Sgr B2(N2) motivated us to investigate triple 13C isotopic species that are expected to be also present in the ISM. Aims. We aim to present an experimental study of the rotational spectrum of triple 13C-substituted ethyl cyanide, 13CH313CH213CN, in the frequency range 150–990 GHz. We want to use the determined spectroscopic parameters for searching for 13CH313CH213CN in ALMA data. The main objective of this work is to provide accurate frequency predictions to search for this molecule in the Galactic center source Sagittarius B2(N) and to facilitate its detection in space. Methods. The laboratory rotational spectrum of 13CH313CH213CN has been recorded with the Lille’s fast DDS solid-state spectrometer between 150 GHz and 990 GHz. Results. More than 4000 rotational transitions were identified in the laboratory. The quantum numbers reach J = 115 and Ka = 39. Watson’s Hamiltonian in the A and S reductions were used to analyze the spectra. Accurate spectroscopic parameters were determined. The rotational spectra of the 13C containing species CH3CH2CN have been assigned, thus allowing the determination of the rotational and centrifugal distortion constants

By the mapping observations simultaneously at the 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0), and C18O (J=1-0) lines on the area of 24’×24’ (12 pc×12 pc) of the star forming region AFGL 5157, we have obtained the distribution and averaged physical parameters for the respective 13CO and C18O cores of this molecu- lar cloud. At the edge of the molecular cloud, the isotopic abundance ratio is X [(13CO)/(C18O)] ≈ 10, close to the ratio of a giant molecular cloud. The viral masses of the 13CO and C18O cores are less than the masses of the molecu-lar cloud cores, so the molecular cloud cores are gravitationally unstable, and the C18O molecular cloud core is more easy to collapse. The column density distributions of the C18O molecular cloud core in the northeast and southwest directions are, respectively, 1.1 × 1023 × z−0.43 and 4.6 × 1025 × z−0.58, where z is the distance from the center of the molecular cloud core. The high velocity molecular outflow has been confirmed from our 12CO spectra, the mass loss rate of the outflow has been estimated, and the mass-velocity relation of the outflow is fitted by a power-law function of m ∝ v−1.8. The star formation rate of the 13CO molecular cloud core is as high as 23%, probably, under the influence of the reflection nebula NGC 1985, this region is forming medium and large mass stars or clusters.

We want to study the rotational spectra of CH$_3^{13}$C(O)CH$_3$ and $^{13}$CH$_3$C(O)CH$_3$ and search for them in Sagittarius B2(N2). We investigated the laboratory rotational spectrum of isotopically enriched CH$_3^{13}$C(O)CH$_3$ between 40 GHz and 910 GHz and of acetone between 36 GHz and 910 GHz in order to study $^{13}$CH$_3$C(O)CH$_3$ in natural isotopic composition. In addition, we searched for emission lines produced by these species in a molecular line survey of Sagittarius B2(N) carried out with ALMA. Discrepancies between predictions of the main isotopic species and the ALMA spectrum prompted us to revisit the rotational spectrum of this isotopolog. We assigned 9711 new transitions of CH$_3^{13}$C(O)CH$_3$ and 63 new transitions of $^{13}$CH$_3$C(O)CH$_3$ in the laboratory spectra. More than 1000 additional lines were assigned for the main isotopic species. We modeled the ground state data of all three isotopologs satisfactorily with the ERHAM program. We find that models of the torsionally excited states $v _{12} = 1$ and $v _{17} = 1$ of CH$_3$C(O)CH$_3$ improve only marginally. No transition of CH$_3^{13}$C(O)CH$_3$ is clearly detected toward the hot molecular core Sgr B2(N2). However, we report a tentative detection of $^{13}$CH$_3$C(O)CH$_3$ with a $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratio of 27 that is consistent with the ratio previously measured for alcohols in this source. Several dozens of transitions of both torsional states of the main isotopolog are detected as well. Our predictions of CH$_3^{13}$C(O)CH$_3$ and CH$_3$C(O)CH$_3$ are reliable into the terahertz region. The spectrum of $^{13}$CH$_3$C(O)CH$_3$ should be revisited in the laboratory with an enriched sample. We have used an unbiased, spectral line-survey that covers the frequency range from 211 to 275 GHz and was obtained with ALMA (angular resolution of 0.4 arcsec) to study the small-scale structure of the dense gas in Sagittarius B2 (north). Eight filaments are found converging to the central hub and extending for about 0.1 pc. The spatial structure, together with the presence of the massive central region, suggest that these filaments may be associated with accretion processes. In order to derive the kinematic properties of the gas in a chemically line-rich source like Sgr B2(N), we have developed a new tool that stacks all the detected transition lines of any molecular species. This permits to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of our observations and average out line blending effects, which are a common problem in line-rich regions. We derive velocity gradients along the filaments of about 20-100 km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{-1}$, which are 10-100 times larger than those typically found on larger scales (1 pc) in other star-forming regions. The mass accretion rates of individual filaments are about 0.05 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, which result in a total accretion rate of 0.16 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Some filaments harbor dense cores that are likely forming stars and stellar clusters. The stellar content of these dense cores is on the order of 50% of the total mass. We conclude that the cores may merge in the center when already forming stellar clusters but still containing a significant amount of gas, resulting in a "damp" merger. The high density and mass of the central region, combined with the presence of converging filaments with high mass, high accretion rates and embedded dense cores already forming stars, suggest that Sgr B2(N) may have the potential to evolve into a super stellar cluster., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 10 pages with 8 figures and 2 tables, plus Appendices with extra figures and tables. Context. The analysis of isomeric species of a compound observed in the interstellar medium (ISM) is a useful tool to understand the chemistry of complex organic molecules. It could, likewise, assist in the detection of new species. Aims. Our goal consists in analyzing one of the two most stable species of the C3H4O family, methyl ketene, whose actual rotational parameters are not precise enough to allow its detection in the ISM. The obtained parameters will be used to search for it in the high-mass star-forming regions Orion KL and Sagittarius B2, as well as in the cold dark clouds TMC-1 in the Taurus Molecular Cloud and Barnard 1 (B1–b). Methods. A millimeter-wave room-temperature rotational spectrum of methyl ketene was recorded from 50 to 330 GHz. The internal rotation analysis of its ground state and first torsional excited state was performed with the rho-axis method employing the RAM36 program. Results. More than 3000 transitions of the rotational spectrum of the ground state (Kamax = 18) and first torsional excited state (Kamax = 13) of methyl ketene were fitted using a Hamiltonian that contains 41 parameters with a root mean square of 44 kHz. Column density limits were calculated but no lines were detected in the ISM belonging to methyl ketene.

International audience; The HIFI instrument aboard the Herschel satellite has allowed the observation and characterization of light hydrides, the building blocks of interstellar chemistry. In this article, we revisit the ortho/para ratio for H2O toward the Sgr B2(M) cloud core. The line of sight toward this star forming region passes through several spiral arms and the gas in the Bar potential in the inner Galaxy. In contrast to earlier findings, which used fewer lines to constrain the ratio, we find a ratio of 3, which is uniformly consistent with high-temperature formation of the species. In view of the reactivity of this ion, this matches the expectations.

The Herschel Space Observatory carried out observations at far-infrared wavelengths, which significantly increased our knowledge of the interstellar medium and the star-formation process in the Milky Way and external galaxies, as well as our understanding of astrochemistry.Absorption features, known, e.g., from observations at millimeter wavelengths, are more commonly observed in the far-infrared, in particular toward strong dust continuum sources. The lowest energy transitions are not only observed at LSR-velocities related to the source, but often also at velocities associated with diffuse molecular clouds along the line of sight toward the background source.Unbiased spectral line surveys of the massive and very luminous Galactic Center sources Sagittarius B2(M) and (N) were carried out across the entire frequency range of the high-resolution Heterodyne Instrument for Far-Infrared Astronomy (HIFI). An absorption feature was detected toward both sources at about 617.531 GHz, corresponding to 20.599 cm−1, 485.47 μm, or 2.5539 meV. This feature is unique in its appearance at all velocity components associated with diffuse foreground molecular clouds, together with its conspicuous absence at velocities related to the sources themselves. The carriers of at least a substantial part of the DIBs are thought to reside in the diffuse interstellar medium. Therefore, we consider this absorption feature to be a far-infrared DIB analog.Subsequent dedicated observations confirmed that the line is present only in the foreground clouds on the line of sight toward other massive star-forming regions in the Galactic disk. There is indication that the feature has substructure, possibly of fine or hyperfine nature. Attempts to assign the feature to atomic or molecular species have been unsuccessful so far.

With a 3.5 m diameter telescope passively cooled to approximately 80 K, and a science payload comprising two direct detection cameras/medium resolution imaging spectrometers (PACS and SPIRE) and a very high spectral resolution heterodyne spectrometer (HIFI), the Herschel Space Observatory is providing extraordinary observational opportunities in the 55–670 μm spectral range. HIFI has opened for the first time to high-resolution spectroscopy the submillimetre band that includes the fundamental rotational transitions of interstellar hydrides, the basic building blocks of astrochemistry. We discuss a recent HIFI discovery of metastable rotational transitions of the hydronium ion (protonated water, H 3 O + ), with rotational level energies up to 1200 K above the ground state, in absorption towards Sagittarius B2(N) in the Galactic centre. Hydronium is an important molecular ion in the oxygen chemical network. Earlier HIFI observations have indicated a general deficiency of H 3 O + in the diffuse gas in the Galactic disc. The presence of hot H 3 O + towards Sagittarius B2(N) thus appears to be related to the unique physical conditions in the central molecular zone, manifested, for example, by the widespread presence of abundant H . One intriguing theory for the high rotational temperature characterizing the population of the H 3 O + metastable levels may be formation pumping in molecular gas irradiated by X-rays emitted by the Galactic centre black hole. Alternatively, the pervasive presence of enhanced turbulence in the central molecular zone may give rise to shocks in the lower-density medium that is exposed to energetic radiation.

We performed a spectral line survey called Exploring Molecular Complexity with ALMA (EMoCA) toward Sagittarius~B2(N) between 84.1 and 114.4 GHz with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in its Cycles 0 and 1. We determined line intensities of n-propyl cyanide in the ground vibrational states of its gauche and anti conformers toward the hot molecular core Sagittarius B2(N2) which suggest that we should also be able to detect transitions pertaining to excited vibrational states. We wanted to determine spectroscopic parameters of low-lying vibrational states of both conformers of n-propyl cyanide to search for them in our ALMA data. We recorded laboratory rotational spectra of n-propyl cyanide in two spectral windows between 36 and 127 GHz. We searched for emission lines produced by these states in the ALMA spectrum of Sagittarius B2(N2). We modeled their emission and the emission of the ground vibrational states assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We have made extensive assignments of a- and b-type transitions of the four lowest vibrational states of the gauche conformer which reach J and Ka quantum numbers of 65 and 20, respectively. We assigned mostly a-type transitions for the anti conformer with J and Ka quantum numbers up to 48 and 24, respectively. Rotational and Fermi perturbations between two anti states allowed us to determine their energy difference. The resulting spectroscopic parameters enabled us to identify transitions of all four vibrational states of each conformer in our ALMA data. Chiral molecule discovered in space A chiral molecule is one that has two forms that are mirror images of each other: enantiomers. Biological systems overwhelmingly use one enantiomer over another, and some meteorites show an excess of one type. The two forms are almost identical chemically, so how this excess first arose is unknown. McGuire et al. used radio astronomy to detect the first known chiral molecule in space: propylene oxide. The work raises the prospect of measuring the enantiomer excess in various astronomical objects, including regions where planets are being formed, to discover how and why the excess first appeared. We model the dust and free-free continuum emission in the high-mass star-forming region Sagittarius B2 in order to reconstruct the three-dimensional density and dust temperature distribution, as a crucial input to follow-up studies of the gas velocity field and molecular abundances. We employ the three-dimensional radiative transfer program RADMC-3D to calculate the dust temperature self-consistently, provided a given initial density distribution. This density distribution of the entire cloud complex is then recursively reconstructed based on available continuum maps, including both single-dish and high-resolution interferometric maps covering a wide frequency range (40 GHz - 4 THz). The model covers spatial scales from 45 pc down to 100 au, i.e. a spatial dynamic range of 10^5. We find that the density distribution of Sagittarius B2 can be reasonably well fitted by applying a superposition of spherical cores with Plummer-like density profiles. In order to reproduce the spectral energy distribution, we position Sgr B2(N) along the line of sight behind the plane containing Sgr B2(M). We find that the entire cloud complex comprises a total gas mass of 8.0 x 10^6 Msun within a diameter of 45 pc, corresponding to an averaged gas density of 170 Msun/pc^3. We estimate stellar masses of 2400 Msun and 20700 Msun and luminosities of 1.8 x 10^6 Lsun and 1.2 x 10^7 Lsun for Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(M), respectively. We report H_2 column densities of 2.9 x 10^24 cm^-2 for Sgr B2(N) and 2.5 x 10^24 cm^-2 for Sgr B2(M) in a 40" beam. For Sgr B2(S), we derive a stellar mass of 1100 Msun, a luminosity of 6.6 x 10^5 Lsun and a H_2 column density of 2.2 x 10^24 cm^-2 in a 40" beam. We calculate a star formation efficiency of 5% for Sgr B2(N) and 50% for Sgr B2(M), indicating that most of the gas content in Sgr B2(M) has already been converted to stars or dispersed., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 30 pages, 24 figures, 6 tables

We have performed a spectral line survey called EMoCA toward Sagittarius B2(N) between 84 and 114 GHz with ALMA. Line intensities of the main isotopic species of ethyl cyanide and its singly 13C-substituted isotopomers observed toward the hot molecular core Sgr B2(N2) suggest that the doubly 13C-substituted isotopomers should be detectable also. We want to determine the spectroscopic parameters of all three doubly 13C-substituted isotopologues of ethyl cyanide to search for them in our ALMA data. We investigated the laboratory rotational spectra of the three species between 150 and 990 GHz. We searched for emission lines produced by these species in the ALMA spectrum of Sgr B2(N2). We modeled their emission as well as the emission of the 12C and singly 13C-substituted isotopologues assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium. We identified more than 5000 rotational transitions, pertaining to more than 3500 different transition frequencies, in the laboratory for each of the three isotopomers. The quantum numbers reach J ~ 115 and K_a ~ 35, resulting in accurate spectroscopic parameters and accurate rest frequency calculations beyond 1000 GHz for strong to moderately weak transitions of either isotopomer. All three species are unambiguously detected in our ALMA data. The 12C/13C column density ratio of the isotopomers with one 13C atom to the ones with two 13C atoms is about 25. Ethyl cyanide is the second molecule after methyl cyanide for which isotopologues containing two 13C atoms have been securely detected in the interstellar medium. The model of our ethyl cyanide data suggests that we should be able to detect vibrational satellites of the main species up to at least v_19 = 1 at 1130 K and up to v_13 + v_21 = 2 at 600 K for the isotopologues with one 13C atom in our present ALMA data. Such satellites may be too weak to be identified unambiguously for isotopologues with two 13C atoms., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We present a study of the kinematics of 101 stars observed with VIMOS around Whiting1, a globular cluster embedded in the Sagittarius tidal stream. The obtained velocity distribution shows the presence of two wraps of that halo substructure at the same heliocentric distance as that of the cluster and with well differentiated mean radial velocities. The most prominent velocity component seems to be associated with the trailing arm of Sagittarius with $$ ~ -130 km/s, which is consistent with the velocity of Whiting1. This result supports that this globular cluster was formed in Sagittarius and recently accreted by the Milky Way. The second component with $$ ~ 120 km/s might correspond to the leading arm of Sagittarius, which has been predicted by numerical simulations but with no conclusive observational evidence of its existence presented so far. This detection of the old leading wrap of Sagittarius in the southern hemisphere may be used to confirm and further constrain the models for its orbit and evolution., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters
