Abstract

The battle against methane emissions has evolved into a global mission, with 150 producing countries worldwide, including the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, and others, pledging their commitment to the Global Methane Pledge. This new initiative was introduced in 2021 during COP26 in Glasgow, United Kingdom, as part of the ongoing efforts to implement the Paris Agreement. The primary objective of this Agreement is a collective endeavour to reduce methane emissions by 30% by the year 2030. In this article, the authors analyse current methane emissions and provide recommendations to the country’s government regarding its participation in the Global Methane Pledge by utilising official national statistical data and insights from the EIA and employing predictive modelling techniques.

Abstract

Many countries have implemented national climate policies to accomplish pledged Nationally Determined Contributions and to contribute to the temperature objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change. In 2023, the global stocktake will assess the combined effort of countries. Here, based on a public policy database and a multi-model scenario analysis, we show that implementation of current policies leaves a median emission gap of 22.4 to 28.2 GtCO2eq by 2030 with the optimal pathways to implement the well below 2 °C and 1.5 °C Paris goals. If Nationally Determined Contributions would be fully implemented, this gap would be reduced by a third. Interestingly, the countries evaluated were found to not achieve their pledged contributions with implemented policies (implementation gap), or to have an ambition gap with optimal pathways towards well below 2 °C. This shows that all countries would need to accelerate the implementation of policies for renewable technologies, while efficiency improvements are especially important in emerging countries and fossil-fuel-dependent countries.

Abstract

The bombardment of thick silicon crystalline targets by monodirectional and monoenergetic beams of 25 to 250 MeV protons is considered. By use of a proton fluence model that accounts for straggling effects, total ionization dose and silicon atom displacement density particle energy. For assumed values of total dose (1 Mrad (Si) ) and displacement( 10 to the 14th power 1-Mev-equivalent-neutrons/sq cm) levels that would disable typical semiconductors, the times required fora beam of 'reference' proton flux (10 to the 13th power protons/(sq cm) (sec) to disable such devices by each of the two mechanisms are computed. Profiles of the ratio of the two disablement times are presented as functions of incident proton energy. For the reference disablement criteria, ionization disablement is found to precede displacement-disablement. Means to scale results to other values of these criteria are noted. Plans to extend the work to cover all three of the hydrogen iostope beams are noted and the desirability of certain related experimental data is discussed. An appendix details the construction of a function assumed to represent the displacement damage coefficient. Abstract

RAND was engaged in a rather broad theoretical survey of homogeneous water-uranium reactors. The aim was to explore the critical nuclear parameters of simple oneregion systems consisting of all those mixtures of the four ingredients, U235, U238, H2O and D2O, which may sustain a chain reaction. The end product was to be a series of maps which show the relative characteristics of the spectrum of water-uranium systems. This article describes part of the program. The calculational scheme employed, a review of rationalizations made, and some resonance escape results for mixtures of natural uranium and water with varying amounts of light and heavy components are given.
