Given the rapidly expanding capabilities of generative AI models for radiology, there is a need for robust metrics that can accurately measure the quality of AI-generated radiology reports across diverse hospitals. We develop ReXamine-Global, a LLM-powered, multi-site framework that tests metrics across different writing styles and patient populations, exposing gaps in their generalization. First, our method tests whether a metric is undesirably sensitive to reporting style, providing different scores depending on whether AI-generated reports are stylistically similar to ground-truth reports or not. Second, our method measures whether a metric reliably agrees with experts, or whether metric and expert scores of AI-generated report quality diverge for some sites. Using 240 reports from 6 hospitals around the world, we apply ReXamine-Global to 7 established report evaluation metrics and uncover serious gaps in their generalizability. Developers can apply ReXamine-Global when designing new report evaluation metrics, ensuring their robustness across sites. Additionally, our analysis of existing metrics can guide users of those metrics towards evaluation procedures that work reliably at their sites of interest.

The projected sensitivity of the effective electron neutrino-mass measurement with the KATRIN experiment is below 0.3 eV (90 % CL) after five years of data acquisition. The sensitivity is affected by the increased rate of the background electrons from KATRIN's main spectrometer. A special shifted-analysing-plane (SAP) configuration was developed to reduce this background by a factor of two. The complex layout of electromagnetic fields in the SAP configuration requires a robust method of estimating these fields. We present in this paper a dedicated calibration measurement of the fields using conversion electrons of gaseous $^\mathrm{83m}$Kr, which enables the neutrino-mass measurements in the SAP configuration., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

We present the design of the mechanical structure of the miniBeBe detector, a subsystem of the Multi-Purpose Detector, soon to enter into operation at the Nuclotron based Ion Collider fAcility of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The miniBeBe detector was designed and is currently being developed by the MexNICA Collaboration to contribute to the level-zero trigger of the Time of Flight. The mechanical structure meets the requirements of minimizing the material budget and be free of ferromagnetic materials, without compromising its robustness. The design also allows easy module replacement for maintenance and overall removal at the end of the first stage of the experiment, without affecting the rest of the subsystems, to leave room for the installation of the Inner Tracking System. In addition, a Finite Element Method analysis of the mechanical components under load was performed. Based on this analysis, it was determined that the design meets the space constraints within the Multi-Purpose Detector, as well as a deformation of less than 1 mm with overall stress of less than 2 MPa, such that no material used in the design is at risk of mechanical failure during operation. A cooling system heat transfer analysis was performed showing that the detector Silicon Photo-Multipliers can be kept within a temperature range of 19$^{\circ}$C to 23$^{\circ}$C, which is adequate for their optimal performance., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables

We perform a complete classification of the consistent two-derivative cubic couplings for a system containing an arbitrary number of massless spin-1, massless spin-2, and partially massless (PM) spin-2 fields in $D$-dimensional (anti-)de Sitter space. In addition to previously known results, we find a unique candidate mixing between spin-1 and PM spin-2 fields. We derive all the quadratic constraints on the structure constants of the theory, allowing for relative ``wrong-sign'' kinetic terms for any of the fields. In the particular case when the kinetic terms in each sector have no relative signs, we find that the unique consistent non-trivial theory is given by multiple independent copies of conformal gravity coupled to a Yang-Mills sector in $D=4$. Our results strengthen the well-known no-go theorems on the absence of mutual interactions for massless and PM spin-2 fields., Comment: 26 pages

The fact that neutrinos carry a non-vanishing rest mass is evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. Their absolute mass bears important relevance from particle physics to cosmology. In this work, we report on the search for the effective electron antineutrino mass with the KATRIN experiment. KATRIN performs precision spectroscopy of the tritium $\beta$-decay close to the kinematic endpoint. Based on the first five neutrino-mass measurement campaigns, we derive a best-fit value of $m_\nu^{2} = {-0.14^{+0.13}_{-0.15}}~\mathrm{eV^2}$, resulting in an upper limit of $m_\nu < {0.45}~\mathrm{eV}$ at 90 % confidence level. With six times the statistics of previous data sets, amounting to 36 million electrons collected in 259 measurement days, a substantial reduction of the background level and improved systematic uncertainties, this result tightens KATRIN's previous bound by a factor of almost two., Comment: 61 pages, 20 figures, 2 tables

We describe the notion of stability of coherent systems as a framework to deal with redundancy. We define stable coherent systems and show how this notion can help the design of reliable systems. We demonstrate that the reliability of stable systems can be efficiently computed using the algebraic versions of improved inclusion-exclusion formulas and sum of disjoint products.

The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$\sigma$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Recent imaging observations with ALMA and other telescopes found widespread signatures of planet presence in protoplanetary discs at tens of au separations from their host stars. Here we point out that the presence of very massive planets at 0.1 au sized orbits can be deduced for protostars accreting gas at very high rates, when their discs display powerful Thermal Instability bursts. Earlier work showed that a massive planet modifies the nature of this instability, with outbursts triggered at the outer edge of the deep gap opened by the planet. We present simulations of this effect, finding two types of TI outbursts: downstream and upstream of the planet, which may or may not be causally connected. We apply our model to the outburst in Gaia20eae. We find that the agreement between the data and our disc thermal instability model is improved if there is a planet of 6 Jupiter masses orbiting the star at 0.062 au separation. Gaia20eae thus becomes the second episodically erupting star, after FU Ori, where the presence of a massive planet is strongly suspected. Episodic accretion in protostars leads to luminosity outbursts that end up heating their surroundings. This rise in temperature pushes the snow lines back, enabling the desorption of chemical species from dust grain surfaces, which may significantly alter the chemical history of the accreting envelope. However, a limited number of extensive chemical surveys of eruptive young stars have been performed thus far. In the present study, we carry out a large spectral survey of the binary Class I protostar L1551 IRS 5, known to be a FUor-like object, in the 3mm and 2mm bands with the IRAM-30m telescope. As a result, we detected more than 400 molecular lines. The source displays a great chemical richness with the detection of 75 species, including isotopologues. Among these species, there are 13 hydrocarbons, 25 N-bearing species, 30 O-bearing species, 15 S-bearing species, 12 deuterated molecules, and a total of 10 complex organic molecules (l-C4H2, CH3CCH, CH2DCCH, CH3CHO, CH3CN, CH3OCH3, CH3OCHO, CH3OH, CH2DOH, and HC5N). With the help of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE models, we determined the column densities of most molecules as well as excitation and kinetic temperatures. While most of those molecules trace the cold envelope (< 20 K), the OCS and CH3OH emission arise from the warm (> 100 K) innermost (< 2'' ) regions. We compared the chemical inventory of L1551 IRS 5 and its column density ratios, including isotopic ratios, with other protostellar sources. A broad chemical diversity is seen among Class I objects. More observations with both single-dish telescopes and interferometers are needed to characterize the diversity in a larger sample of protostars, while more astrochemical models would help explain this diversity, in addition to the impact of luminosity outbursts on the chemistry of protostellar envelopes., Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publications in A&A

The question of geodesic completeness of cosmological spacetimes has recently received renewed scrutiny. A particularly interesting result is the observation that the well-known Borde-Guth-Vilenkin (BGV) theorem may misdiagnose geodesically complete cosmologies. We propose a simple amendment to the BGV theorem which addresses such loopholes while retaining much of its generality. We give straightforward proofs of some recently offered conjectures concerning (generalized) Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes: geodesic completeness implies (i) the existence of a bounce, loitering phase or an emergent cosmology, and (ii) a phase of accelerated expansion with strictly increasing Hubble rate. We present a comprehensive analysis of fidelity decay and error accumulation in faulty quantum circuit models. Our work devises an analytical bound for the average fidelity between desired and faulty output states, accounting for errors that may arise during the implementation of two-qubit gates and multi-qubit permutations. It is shown that fidelity decays exponentially with both circuit depth and the number of qubits raised to an architecture-dependent power, and determine the decay rates as a function of the two types of errors. Furthermore, we establish a robust linear relationship between fidelity and the heavy output frequency used in Quantum Volume tests to benchmark quantum processors, under the considered errors protocol. These findings pave the way for predicting the behavior of fidelity in the presence of specific errors and offer insights into the best strategies for increasing Quantum Volume., Comment: v2.Main: 5 pages and 4 figures. On March 6 2023, the Gaia telescope has alerted a 2-magnitude burst from Gaia23bab, a Young Stellar Object in the Galactic plane. We observed Gaia23bab with the Large Binocular Telescope obtaining optical and near-infrared spectra close in time to the peak of the burst, and collected all public multi-band photometry to reconstruct the historical light curve. This latter shows three bursts in ten years (2013, 2017 and 2023), whose duration and amplitude are typical of EXor variables. We estimate that, due to the bursts, the mass accumulated on the star is about twice greater than if the source had remained quiescent for the same period of time. Photometric analysis indicates that Gaia23bab is a Class,II source with age < 1 Myr, spectral type G3-K0, stellar luminosity 4.0 L_sun, and mass 1.6 M_sun. The optical/near infrared spectrum is rich in emission lines. From the analysis of these lines we measured the accretion luminosity and the mass accretion rate L_acc(burst)=3.7 L_sun, M_acc(burst) 2.0 10 $^(-7) M_sun/yr, consistent with those of EXors. More generally, we derive the relationships between accretion and stellar parameters in a sample of EXors. We find that, when in burst, the accretion parameters become almost independent of the stellar parameters and that EXors, even in quiescence, are more efficient than classical T Tauri stars in assembling mass., Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

Context. Gaia18cjb is one of the Gaia-alerted eruptive young star candidates which has been experiencing a slow and strong brightening during the last 13 years, similar to some FU Orionis-type objects. Aims. The aim of this work is to derive the young stellar nature of Gaia18cjb, determine its physical and accretion properties to classify its variability. Methods. We conducted monitoring observations using multi-filter optical and near-infrared photometry, as well as near-infrared spectroscopy. We present the analysis of pre-outburst and outburst optical and infrared light curves, color-magnitude diagrams in different bands, the detection of near-IR spectral lines, and estimates of both stellar and accretion parameters during the burst. Results. The optical light curve shows an unusually long (8 years) brightening event of 5 mag in the last 13 years, before reaching a plateau indicating that the burst is still on-going, suggesting a FUor-like nature. The same outburst is less strong in the infrared light curves. The near-infrared spectra, obtained during the outburst, exhibit emission lines typical of highly accreting low-intermediate mass young stars with typical EXor features. The spectral index of Gaia18cjb SED classifies it as a Class I in the pre-burst stage and a Flat Spectrum young stellar object (YSO) during the burst. Conclusions. Gaia18cjb is an eruptive YSO which shows FUor-like photometric features (in terms of brightening amplitude and length of the burst) and EXor-like spectroscopic features and accretion rate, as V350 Cep and V1647 Ori, classified as objects in between FUors and EXors, Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures

In the classical grouping of large magnitude episodic variability of young accreting stars, FUORs outshine their stars by a factor of $\sim$ 100, and can last for up to centuries; EXORs are dimmer, and last months to a year. A disc Hydrogen ionisation Thermal Instability (TI) scenario was previously proposed for FUORs but required unrealistically low disc viscosity. In the last decade, many intermediate type objects, e.g., FUOR-like in luminosity and spectra but EXOR-like in duration were found. Here we show that the intermediate type bursters Gaia20eae, PTF14jg, Gaia19bey and Gaia21bty may be naturally explained by the TI scenario with realistic viscosity values. We argue that TI predicts a dearth (desert) of bursts with peak accretion rates between $\dot M \sim 10^{-6} M_\odot$/yr and $\dot M \sim 10^{-5} M_\odot$/yr, and that this desert is seen in the sample of all the bursters with previously determined $\dot M$ burst. Most classic EXORs (FUORs) appear to be on the cold (hot) branch of the S-curve during the peak light of their eruptions; thus TI may play a role in this class differentiation. At the same time, TI is unable to explain how classic FUORs can last for up to centuries, and over-predicts the occurrence rate of short FUORs by at least an order of magnitude. We conclude that TI is a required ingredient of episodic accretion operating at R < 0.1 au, but additional physics must play a role at larger scales. An analysis of the relationship between the bandwidth of acoustic signals and the required resolution of steered-response power phase transform (SRP-PHAT) maps used for sound source localization is presented. This relationship does not rely on the far-field assumption, nor does it depend on any specific array topology. The proposed analysis considers the computation of a SRP map as a process of sampling a set of generalized cross-correlation (GCC) functions, each one corresponding to a different microphone pair. From this approach, we derive a rule that relates GCC bandwidth with inter-microphone distance, resolution of the SRP map, and the potential position of the sound source relative to the array position. This rule is a sufficient condition for an aliasing-free calculation of the specified SRP-PHAT map. Simulation results show that limiting the bandwidth of the GCC according to such rule leads to significant reductions in sound source localization errors when sources are not in the immediate vicinity of the microphone array. Acoustic reverberation is one of the most relevant factors that hampers the localization of a sound source inside a room. To date, several approaches have been proposed to deal with it, but have not always been evaluated under realistic conditions. This paper proposes exploiting spatial diversity as an alternative approach to achieve robustness against reverberation. The theoretical arguments supporting this approach are first presented and later confirmed by means of simulation results and real measurements. Simulations are run for reverberation times up to 2 s, thus providing results with a wider range of validity than in other previous research works. It is concluded that the use of systems consisting of several, sufficiently separated, small arrays leads to the best results in reverberant environments. Some recommendations are given regarding the choice of the array sizes, the separation among them, and the way to combine SRP-PHAT maps obtained from diverse arrays.

A transversal study of the pitch variability of parkinsonian voices in read speech is presented. 30 patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD) and 32 healthy speakers were recorded while reading a text without voiceless phonemes. The fundamental frequency contours were calculated from the recordings, and the following measures were used for describing them: mean, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation of the estimated fundamental frequencies. Results based on these measures indicate that the influence of PD on some aspects of intonation can be masked by the effects of aging, especially for male voices. However, some parameters such as the relative fundamental frequency range exhibit lower correlations with age than with PD stage, as evaluated using the Hoehn and Yahr scale. These correlations between relative fundamental frequency range and PD stage reach moderate-to-high values in the case of women. Additionally, three parameters describing the form of the fundamental frequency modulation spectrum were investigated for correlation with age and PD stage. The study of this modulation spectrum provides some insight into the ability of the speakers to plan the intonation of full phrases. For both male and female populations, significant correlations were found between parameters obtained from the modulation spectrum of fundamental frequency and the PD stage. Nevertheless, the quantitative assessment of the performance of regression models built from these modulation parameters and fundamental frequency range suggests that such measures are likely to be of limited value in the early diagnosis of PD due to inter-speaker variability.

We introduce TopoX, a Python software suite that provides reliable and user-friendly building blocks for computing and machine learning on topological domains that extend graphs: hypergraphs, simplicial, cellular, path and combinatorial complexes. TopoX consists of three packages: TopoNetX facilitates constructing and computing on these domains, including working with nodes, edges and higher-order cells; TopoEmbedX provides methods to embed topological domains into vector spaces, akin to popular graph-based embedding algorithms such as node2vec; TopoModelx is built on top of PyTorch and offers a comprehensive toolbox of higher-order message passing functions for neural networks on topological domains. The extensively documented and unit-tested source code of TopoX is available under MIT license at https://pyt-team.github.io/.

We prove that the Pommaret-Seiler resolution for quasi-stable ideals is cellular and give a cellular structure for it. This shows that this resolution is a generalization of the well known Eliahou-Kervaire resolution for stable ideals in a deeper sense. We also prove that the Pommaret-Seiler resolution can be reduced to the minimal one via Discrete Morse Theory and provide a constructive algorithm to perform this reduction.

Let $I$ be a monomial ideal in two variables generated by three monomials and let $\mathcal{R}(I)$ be its Rees ideal. We describe an algorithm to compute the minimal generating set of $\mathcal{R}(I)$. Based on the data obtained by this algorithm, we build a graph that encodes the minimal free resolution of $\mathcal{R}(I)$. We explicitly describe the modules and differentials on the minimal free resolution of $\mathcal{R}(I)$.

Context. Rocky planets form by the concentration of solid particles in the inner few au regions of planet-forming disks. Their chemical composition reflects the materials in the disk available in the solid phase at the time the planets were forming. Aims. We aim to constrain the structure and dust composition of the inner disk of the young star HD 144432, using an extensive set of infrared interferometric data taken by the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), combining PIONIER, GRAVITY, and MATISSE observations. Methods. We introduced a new physical disk model, TGMdust, to image the interferometric data, and to fit the disk structure and dust composition. We also performed equilibrium condensation calculations with GGchem. Results. Our best-fit model has three disk zones with ring-like structures at 0.15, 1.3, and 4.1 au. Assuming that the dark regions in the disk at ~0.9 au and at ~3 au are gaps opened by planets, we estimate the masses of the putative gap-opening planets to be around a Jupiter mass. We find evidence for an optically thin emission ($\tau<0.4$) from the inner two disk zones ($r<4$ au) at $\lambda>3\ \mu$m. Our silicate compositional fits confirm radial mineralogy gradients. To identify the dust component responsible for the infrared continuum emission, we explore two cases for the dust composition, one with a silicate+iron mixture and the other with a silicate+carbon one. We find that the iron-rich model provides a better fit to the spectral energy distribution. Conclusions. We propose that in the warm inner regions ($r<5$ au) of typical planet-forming disks, most if not all carbon is in the gas phase, while iron and iron sulfide grains are major constituents of the solid mixture along with forsterite and enstatite. There is a vast body of literature documenting the positive impacts that rater training and calibration sessions have on inter-rater reliability as research indicates several factors including frequency and timing play crucial roles towards ensuring inter-rater reliability. Additionally, increasing amounts research indicate possible links in rater-reliability and grade inflation pertaining to faculty status and length of employment. This research study analyzed the impact that consistent and collaborative training and rubric calibration, or the lack thereof, has on inter-rater reliability. Additionally, this study investigated whether faculty status and faculty length of employment has an influence on scoring reliability. Finally, participatory action research was planned to assist in the creation of a formal training policy and processed that could then be tested to explore the impact that such training would have on future examination rater-reliability. Five years of examination scoring data was utilized from a small Midwest region private graduate school. Intraclass correlation coefficient statistical analysis was employed to determine inter-rater reliability along with independent samples t-test to determine statistical significance the faculty groups. Mean scoring differences outputs were then tested utilizing a Likert-type scale to evaluate scoring gaps amongst faculty. The findings within this study indicate that inter-rater reliability is negatively impacted when no formal or consistent training. However, no significant differences between the mean scores were found based on faculty status nor between faculty length of employment. The hypothesis testing yielded support of the main hypothesis within this research study and the current literature in which inter-rater reliability is negatively impacted when no formal or consistent rater-training and rubric calibrations are performed for raters of examinations. The implications for practice resulting from this study display the need for formal training policy and processes be created, and consistently completed to ensure inter-rater reliability will be positively impacted.

Due to their ability to model meaningful higher order relations among a set of entities, higher order network models have emerged recently as a powerful alternative for graph-based network models which are only capable of modeling binary relationships. Message passing paradigm is still dominantly used to learn representations even for higher order network models. While powerful, message passing can have disadvantages during inference, particularly when the higher order connectivity information is missing or corrupted. To overcome such limitations, we propose Topo-MLP, a purely MLP-based simplicial neural network algorithm to learn the representation of elements in a simplicial complex without explicitly relying on message passing. Our framework utilizes a novel Higher Order Neighborhood Contrastive (HONC) loss which implicitly incorporates the simplicial structure into representation learning. Our proposed model's simplicity makes it faster during inference. Moreover, we show that our model is robust when faced with missing or corrupted connectivity structure.

In this study, the classical two-dimensional potential $V_N=\frac{1}{2}\,m\,\omega^2\,r^2 + \frac{1}{N}\,r^N\,\sin(N\,\theta)$, $N \in {\mathbb Z}^+$, is considered. At $N=1,2$, the system is superintegrable and integrable, respectively, whereas for $N>2$ it exhibits a richer chaotic dynamics. For instance, at $N=3$ it coincides with the H\'enon-Heiles system. The periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic motions are systematically characterized employing time series, Poincar\'e sections, symmetry lines and the largest Lyapunov exponent as a function of the energy $E$ and the parameter $N$. Concrete results for the lowest cases $N=3,4$ are presented in complete detail. This model is used as a benchmark system to estimate the accuracy of the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems (SINDy) method, a data-driven algorithm which reconstructs the underlying governing dynamical equations. We pay special attention at the transition from regular motion to chaos and how this influences the precision of the algorithm. In particular, it is shown that SINDy is a robust and stable tool possessing the ability to generate non-trivial approximate analytical expressions for periodic trajectories as well.

Graph-based signal processing techniques have become essential for handling data in non-Euclidean spaces. However, there is a growing awareness that these graph models might need to be expanded into `higher-order' domains to effectively represent the complex relations found in high-dimensional data. Such higher-order domains are typically modeled either as hypergraphs, or as simplicial, cubical or other cell complexes. In this context, cell complexes are often seen as a subclass of hypergraphs with additional algebraic structure that can be exploited, e.g., to develop a spectral theory. In this article, we promote an alternative perspective. We argue that hypergraphs and cell complexes emphasize \emph{different} types of relations, which may have different utility depending on the application context. Whereas hypergraphs are effective in modeling set-type, multi-body relations between entities, cell complexes provide an effective means to model hierarchical, interior-to-boundary type relations. We discuss the relative advantages of these two choices and elaborate on the previously introduced concept of a combinatorial complex that enables co-existing set-type and hierarchical relations. Finally, we provide a brief numerical experiment to demonstrate that this modelling flexibility can be advantageous in learning tasks.

In this work we analyze how reputation-based interactions influence the emergence of innovations. To do so, we make use of a dynamic model that mimics the discovery process by which, at each time step, a pair of individuals meet and merge their knowledge to eventually result in a novel technology of higher value. The way in which these pairs are brought together is found to be crucial for achieving the highest technological level. Our results show that when the influence of reputation is weak or moderate, it induces an acceleration of the discovery process with respect to the neutral case (purely random coupling). However, an excess of reputation is clearly detrimental, because it leads to an excessive concentration of knowledge in a small set of people, which prevents a diversification of the technologies discovered and, in addition, leads to societies in which a majority of individuals lack technical capabilities.

In this work, we study the silicate dust content in the disk of one of the youngest eruptive stars, V900 Mon, at the highest angular resolution probing down to the inner 10 au of said disk, and study the historical evolution of the system traced in part by a newly discovered emission clump. We performed high-angular resolution mid-infrared interferometric observations of V900 Mon with MATISSE/VLTI with a spatial coverage ranging from 38-m to 130-m baselines, and compared them to archival MIDI/VLTI data. We also mined and re-analyzed archival optical and infrared photometry of the star to study its long-term evolution since its eruption in the 1990s. We complemented our findings with integral field spectroscopy data from MUSE/VLT. The MATISSE/VLTI data suggest a radial variation of the silicate feature in the dusty disk, whereby at large spatial scales ($\geq10$ au) the protostellar disk's emission is dominated by large-sized ($\geq1\,\mu m$) silicate grains, while at smaller spatial scales and closer to the star ($\leq5$ au), silicate emission is absent suggesting self-shielding. We propose that the self-shielding may be the result of small dust grains at the base of the collimated CO outflow previously detected by ALMA. A newly discovered knot in the MUSE/VLT data, located at a projected distance approximately 27,000 au from the star, is co-aligned with the molecular gas outflow at a P.A. of $250^o$ ($\pm5^o$) consistent with the position angle and inclination of the disk. The knot is seen in emission in H$\alpha$, [N II], and the [S II] doublet and its kinematic age is about 5150 years. Identifying molecular signatures from complex disease patients with underlying symptomatic similarities is a significant challenge in the analysis of high dimensional multi-omics data. Topological data analysis (TDA) provides a way of extracting such information from the geometric structure of the data and identifying multiway higher-order relationships. Here, we propose an application of Harmonic persistent homology, which overcomes the limitations of ambiguous assignment of the topological information to the original elements in a representative topological cycle from the data. When applied to multi-omics data, this leads to the discovery of hidden patterns highlighting the relationships between different omic profiles, while allowing for common tasks in multi-omics analyses, such as disease subtyping, and most importantly biomarker identification for similar latent biological pathways that are associated with complex diseases. Our experiments on multiple cancer data show that harmonic persistent homology effectively dissects multi-omics data to identify biomarkers by detecting representative cycles predictive of disease subtypes.

Automatically generated reports from medical images promise to improve the workflow of radiologists. Existing methods consider an image-to-report modeling task by directly generating a fully-fledged report from an image. However, this conflates the content of the report (e.g., findings and their attributes) with its style (e.g., format and choice of words), which can lead to clinically inaccurate reports. To address this, we propose a two-step approach for radiology report generation. First, we extract the content from an image; then, we verbalize the extracted content into a report that matches the style of a specific radiologist. For this, we leverage RadGraph -- a graph representation of reports -- together with large language models (LLMs). In our quantitative evaluations, we find that our approach leads to beneficial performance. Our human evaluation with clinical raters highlights that the AI-generated reports are indistinguishably tailored to the style of individual radiologist despite leveraging only a few examples as context., Comment: Accepted to Findings of EMNLP 2023

Understanding the ability of particles to maneuver through disordered environments is a central problem in innumerable settings, from active matter and biology to electronics. Macroscopic particles ultimately exhibit diffusive motion when their energy exceeds the characteristic potential barrier of the random landscape. In stark contrast, wave-particle duality causes electrons in sufficiently disordered media to come to rest even when the potential is weak -- a remarkable phenomenon known as Anderson localization. Here, we present a hydrodynamic active system with wave-particle features, a millimetric droplet self-guided by its own wave field over a submerged random topography, whose dynamics exhibits localized statistics analogous to those of electronic systems. Consideration of an ensemble of particle trajectories reveals a suppression of diffusion when the guiding wave field extends over the disordered topography. We rationalize mechanistically the emergent statistics by virtue of the wave-mediated resonant coupling between the droplet and topography, which produces an attractive wave potential about the localization region. This hydrodynamic analog, which demonstrates how a classical particle may localize like a wave, suggests new directions for future research in various areas, including active matter, wave localization, many-body localization, and topological matter.

The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN) aims to determine the effective mass of the electron antineutrino via a high-precision measurement of the tritium beta-decay spectrum in its end-point region. The target neutrino-mass sensitivity of 0.2 eV / c^2 at 90% C.L. can only be achieved in the case of high statistics and a good control of the systematic uncertainties. One key systematic effect originates from the calculation of the molecular final states of T_2 beta decay. In the first neutrino-mass analyses of KATRIN the contribution of the uncertainty of the molecular final-states distribution (FSD) was estimated via a conservative phenomenological approach to be 0.02 eV^2 / c^4. In this paper a new procedure is presented for estimating the FSD-related uncertainties by considering the details of the final-states calculation, i.e. the uncertainties of constants, parameters, and functions used in the calculation as well as its convergence itself as a function of the basis-set size used in expanding the molecular wave functions. The calculated uncertainties are directly propagated into the experimental observable, the squared neutrino mass m_nu^2. With the new procedure the FSD-related uncertainty is constrained to 0.0013 eV^2 / c^4, for the experimental conditions of the first KATRIN measurement campaign.

The complex behavior of many systems in nature requires the application of robust methodologies capable of identifying changes in their dynamics. In the case of time series (which are sensed values of a system during a time interval), several methods have been proposed to evaluate their irregularity. However, for some types of dynamics such as stochastic and chaotic, new approaches are required that can provide a better characterization of them. In this paper we present the simplicial complex approximate entropy (SCAE), which is based on the conditional probability of the occurrence of elements of a simplicial complex. Our results show that this entropy measure provides a wide range of values with details not easily identifiable with standard methods. In particular, we show that our method is able to quantify the irregularity in simulated random sequences and those from low-dimensional chaotic dynamics. Furthermore, it is possible to consistently differentiate cardiac interbeat sequences from healthy subjects and from patients with heart failure, as well as to identify changes between dynamical states of coupled chaotic maps. We examine the long-term spectroscopic and photometric variability of EX~Lupi and TW~Hya, studying the presence of stable accretion and the role it plays in the observed variability. Analysing the velocity modulations of the emission lines with STAR-MELT, we obtain information on the structure of the accretion columns and the disk-star connection. The emission line radial velocities reveal that TW Hya, like EX Lupi, has a remarkably stable or slow-varying accretion column footprint, locked to the star for several years. The line-emitting regions are non-polar for both EX Lupi and TW Hya, and species with different energies differ in position. In contrast, the continuum emission as observed in the photometry is very variable and can be modelled by hot spot(s) that change over time in phase, shape, temperature, size, and location with respect to the emission line region. The continuum emission region may not be limited to the stellar surface, especially during episodes of high accretion. The broad line emission observed in EX Lupi during episodes of increased accretion reveals a further structure, which can be fitted by non-axisymmetric disk in Keplerian rotation inwards of the corotation radius. Since the radial velocity modulation due to accretion footprints is so stable, we used it to search for further velocity modulations. While no residual modulation (other than caused by stellar rotation) is found in these objects, a similar analysis could help to identify young planets/companions. Over the last couple of years, we have seen increased concerns about the teacher workforce and intensified news reporting describing teacher shortages. In response, many states have enacted policies largely in the absence of data on the precise nature of their staffing challenges, such as lowering standards across the board for entry into teaching. The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) set out to understand the key data elements states are currently collecting, which data is missing, and the level of detail that is needed to meaningfully answer questions about the teacher workforce. This work expands on a "State of the States 2021: State Reporting of Teacher Supply and Demand Data" (ED617872) that focused on the teacher supply and demand data states make public, which revealed serious gaps in the public availability of data. In July 2022, NCTQ surveyed states to determine the extent to which they collect data on 39 distinct data elements related to teacher supply, demand, and demographics. Three aspects of the data were looked at: (1) organization; (2) subject-area; and (3) timing. Forty-three states provided responses to the survey. This brief outlines the survey findings considering three dimensions of the teacher workforce: (1) health of the teacher pipeline; (2) teacher turnover (attrition), mobility, and shortages; and (3) equitable assignment of teachers. Findings indicate that many states have data available, but not all data elements are connected, limiting states' ability to answer key questions. It was also found that states often collect information on teachers as individuals, but not on teaching positions, a key missing element to accurately understand teacher demand and the local teacher labor market.

Strong teacher and principal evaluation systems have the potential to help teachers and principals improve their practice, to exit teachers who are perennially ineffective, to retain teachers who are effective and learn from them, and to increase the overall quality of a district's teacher workforce. As states respond to widespread concerns (both real and perceived) about teacher shortages and resignations, evaluation systems also have a role to play: Schools need access to fair, valid evaluation systems to help identify and retain highly effective teachers and principals, as well as to support those who are struggling. Given the importance of state policies to set the conditions for successful evaluation systems, National Council on Teacher Quality has regularly collected data, starting in 2011, to chart states' progress in adopting evidence-based evaluation practices. This report analyzes statewide policies for teacher and principal evaluations in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, using data collected in fall of 2021 and verified by states in early 2022, in order to answer the following questions: (1) What role does the state play in teacher and principal evaluation design?; (2) What components are included in a teacher or principal's evaluation?; (3) When, where, how, and by whom are evaluations conducted?; and (4) Are evaluations used for support and improvement?
