Abstract

We present a description of the new complex installation for the study of extensive air showers which was created at the Tien Shan mountain cosmic ray station, as well as the results of the test measurements made there in 2014-2016. At present, the system for registration of electromagnetic shower component consists of $\sim$100 detector points built on the basis of plastic scintillator plates with the sensitive area of 0.25m$^2$ and 1m$^2$, spread equidistantly over $\sim$10$^4$m$^2$ space. The dynamic range of scintillation amplitude measurements is currently about $(3-7)\cdot 10^4$, and there is a prospect of it being extended up to $\sim$10$^6$. The direction of shower arrival is defined by signal delays from a number of the scintillators placed cross-wise at the periphery of the detector system. For the investigation of nuclear active shower components there was created a multi-tier 55m$^2$ ionization-neutron calorimeter with a sum absorber thickness of $\sim$1000g/cm$^2$, typical spatial resolution of the order of 10cm, and dynamic range of ionization measurement channel about $\sim$10$^5$. Also, the use of saturation-free neutron detectors is anticipated for registration of the high- and low-energy hadron components in the region of shower core. A complex of underground detectors is designed for the study of muonic and penetrative nuclear-active components of the shower. The full stack of data acquisition, detector calibration, and shower parameters restoration procedures are now completed, and the newly obtained shower size spectrum and lateral distribution of shower particles occur in agreement with conventional data. Abstract

We present a general description as well as a sample of illustrative experimental results of the Tien Shan high altitude detector complex which is aimed for fundamental and applied investigations in different fields of astroparticle, atmospheric, and environmental physics. The unique natural conditions of the Tien Shan Mountain Scientific Station where this complex resides, the presence of a modern equipment, and the use of multi-messenger integrated approach by detection of various radiation types open a new stage of research in cosmic ray physics and high-energy atmospheric phenomena.

Abstract

Extensive air showers characterized by a multicomponent time structure were detected at the experimental Horizon-T array deployed at the Tien Shan High-Altitude Science Station of Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, at an altitude of 3346 meters above sea level. Such a structure manifested itself in showers of energy above 1017 eV and suggests that, in contrast to the standard mechanism of the development of a nuclear-electromagnetic cascade, shower particles reach the observation level as components of several shower disks. Abstract

The elastic and inelastic scatterings of α -particles were investigated at an energy of 40 MeV with excitation of low-lying states of the 1 1 B nucleus [0.0 (3/2 − ), 4.445 (5/2 − ), 6.74 (7/2 − ), 2.125 (1/2 − ) and 5.02 MeV (3/2 − )]. The analysis of the experimental angular distributions was carried out via the coupled channels method within the framework of the collective model. The value of the quadrupole deformation parameter β 2 = 0. 5 4 5 was extracted. Calculations indicate a preference for a negative sign for deformation. It is shown that the exchange mechanism with the transfer of the heavy 7Li cluster does not play an important role in the scattering of α -particles on 1 1 B nuclei at an energy of 40 MeV. Abstract

Elastic and inelastic scattering of -particles at 48.1MeV and 3He at 60MeV on O nuclei has been measured with excitation of states at 6.05 (0)-6.13 (3)MeV, 6.92 (2)-7.12 (1)MeV and 8.87 (2)MeV. The center-of-mass beam momenta are the same for these two strongly absorbed particles. Analysis of angular distributions was performed in the frameworks of the optical model, the coupled channels method and the Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA). A good description of experimental data was obtained over the full angular range without taking into account the spin-orbit interaction and the cluster transfer mechanism with real potentials that have volume integrals of about 400MeV fm3. Collective and microscopic models were used in the analysis of the inelastic scattering. The values of the octupole deformation lengths were extracted. It is shown that nuclear rainbow effects appear not only in the elastic, but also in the inelastic scattering with excitation of the 3 state of O. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
