Abstract

Work is frequently interrupted. What is known about how interruptions affect productivity? This important question has been studied using a variety of research methods, from controlled experiments designed to learn about the effect of interruptions on task performance, to analytical cognitive models that explain what makes an interruption disruptive, to in-situ observational studies that document the kinds of interruptions people experience in their actual workplaces. In this chapter, we review research on interruptions that has used these three research methods. We review what the methods entail, and what insights it has given on how interruptions affect productivity.

9. Fitbit for Developers: Self-Monitoring at Work

Abstract

Recently, we have seen an explosion in the number of devices and apps that we can use to track various aspects of our lives, such as the steps we walk, the quality of our sleep, or the calories we consume. People use devices such as the Fitbit activity tracker to increase and maintain their physical activity level by tracking their behavior, setting goals (e.g. 10'000 steps a day) and competing with friends. Many of these approaches have been shown to successfully encourage users to change their behaviors, often motivated through persuasive technologies, such as goal-setting, social encouragement and sharing mechanisms. We explored how we can map the tremendous success of these smart devices to the workplace, with the aim to increase software developers' self-awareness about productivity through self-monitoring. Yet, little is known about expectations of, the experience with, and the impact of self-monitoring in the workplace. From a mixed-methods approach we inferred design elements for building workplace self-monitoring tools, which we then implemented as a technology probe called WorkAnalytics. We field-tested these design elements during a three-week study with software development professionals. In the field study, we found that self-monitoring paired with experience sampling increases developers' awareness about work and motivates many to improve their behaviors, and that a wide variety of different metrics is needed to fulfill developers' expectations. Our work can serve as a starting point for researchers and practitioners to build self-monitoring tools for the workplace.

10. Developers’ Diverging Perceptions of Productivity

Abstract

To overcome the ever-growing demand for software, software development organizations strive to enhance the productivity of their developers. But what does productivity mean in the context of software development? A substantial amount of work on developer productivity has been undertaken over the past four decades. The majority of this work considered productivity from a top-down perspective (the manager view) in terms of the artifacts and code created per unit of time. Common examples of such productivity measures are the lines of source code modified per hour, the resolution time for modification requests, or function points created per month. These productivity measures focus on a single, output-oriented factor for quantifying productivity, and do not take into account developers’ individual work roles, practices and other factors that might affect their productivity, such as work fragmentation, the tools used, or the work/office environment. In our research, we investigated how productivity could be quantified from the bottom-up, following a mixed-methods approach that involved more than 800 software developers. By investigating developers’ individual productivity, it is possible to better understand the individual work habits and patterns, how they relate to the productivity perceptions and also which factors are most relevant for a developer’s productivity.

11. Reducing Interruptions at Work with FlowLight

Abstract

Interruptions at the workplace can consume a lot of time and cause frustration, especially if they happen at moments of high focus. To reduce costly interruptions, we developed the FlowLight, a small LED Lamp mounted at a worker's desk that computes a worker's availability for interruptions based on computer interaction and indicates it to her coworkers with colors, similar to a traffic light. In a large study with 449 participants, we found that the FlowLight reduced interruptions by 46%. We also observed an increased awareness of the potential harm of interruptions and an increased feeling of productivity. In this chapter, we present our insights from developing and evaluating FlowLight, and reflect on the key factors that contributed to its success.

Abstract

State-to-state and total rotational energy transfer (RET) rate constants were measured for collisions of CN(B²Σ[sup +], υ = 0,N[sub i] = 4,7,8,11) with H[sub 2], CN(X²Σ[sup +], υ = 2,N[sub i] = 4,11) with H[sub 2] and D[sub 2], and CN(X²Σ[sup +],υ = 3,N[sub i] = 4) with NO at room temperature and under single, or near-single, collision conditions. Rate constants were also measured for electronic quenching of CN(B²Σ[sup +],υ = 0,N[sub i] = 4,7,8,and 11) by H[sub 2]. In general, state-to-state RET rate constants showed very small or no even-odd alternations as the final rotational state varied. Total rate constants for CN(X²Σ[sup +],υ = 2,N)/H[sub 2], D[sub 2] were found to decrease with increasing rotational quantum number, N. By contrast, total rate constants for CN(B²Σ[sup +],υ = 0,N)/H[sub 2] were found to be relatively independent of N. Exponential energy gap and angular momentum fitting functions were found to represent measured state-to-state RET rate constants very well and were substantially equally effective in this regard. Abstract

Stimulated emission pumping state preparation and laser induced fluorescence state detection in the CN(B 2Σ+–X 2Σ+) violet system have been employed to study relaxation of single rotational states of CN(X 2Σ+, v=2) in collisions with He at 295 K. Approximately 2/3 of the value of the total removal rate constant for CN(X 2Σ+, v=2, N=2, 11, or 14) corresponds to changes in the rotational quantum number of |ΔN|≤3 and a strong propensity is evident which favors even changes in N for |ΔN|≤4. The measured rate constants are consistent with detailed balance, can be described with statistical power-gap and exponential energy-gap fitting functions and, where compared, are in accord with an IOS-based scaling function. No significant difference is found between a sum of state-to-state rate constants and separately measured total removal rate constants for N=2, 11, and 14. The total removal rate constants decrease monotonically between N=0 and N=41 to about 1/3 of their value at N=0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

23. [Mason vertical gastroplasty in treatment of morbid obesity. Results of a prospective clinical study]

Abstract

Morbid obesity (body mass index > 40 kg/m2) is a risk factor for cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, neoplastic, and psychologic sequelae. In the present prospective clinical study 65 patients (11 men, 54 women) underwent vertical banded gastroplasty (Mason procedure) from June 1994 to October 1997. The median age was 41 +/- 5.3 years (range 18-69; n = 65). Preoperative body weight was 135 +/- 23 kg (96-229; n = 65), excess body weight in kg was 75 +/- 6.9 (44-155; n = 65) or in % 126 +/- 10 (78-223; n = 65) and BMI was 49 +/- 7.4 kg/m2 (39-69; n = 65). Mean hospital stay was 9.7 +/- 2.4 days (6-18; n = 65). Hospital mortality was 0% (0/65). Early complications were vomiting (30%) and problems in wound healing (15%; n = 65). Late complications (> 30 days) were incisional hernias (13.8%) and staple-line disruptions (12.3%; n = 65) with a reoperation rate of 23% (15/65). Median follow-up was 15.0 +/- 5.2 months (2-42) with a follow up rate of 100%. Mean weight loss after 12 months was 38.5 +/- 17 kg (30-98; n = 34) (P < 0.0001) and loss of excessive body weight 65 +/- 10% (57-86; n = 34), respectively (P < 0.0001). Cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia) were significantly improved within 12 months (n = 34). Vertical banded gastroplasty (Mason procedure)--well established for 20 years--is a good, safe therapy for morbid obesity if strict indications for operation are observed and if there is multidisciplinary long-term follow-up. Comorbid risk factors are considerably reduced and a long-term weight loss of more than 50% can be achieved without the risk of pathological metabolic changes.

EMR alerts may not be considered relevant or informative in the clinician context, leading to a phenomenon colloquially known as “alert fatigue.”Objective: To assess the frequency of clinical interaction with EMR alerts and associated deprescribing behaviors in ambulatory settings.Methods: This is a retrospective observational study in two ambulatory clinics (the Kaye Edmonton Clinic Senior’s Clinic and the Lynnwood Family Practice Clinic) in Edmonton over an observational period of 30 months. Statistical analysis was done using descriptive statistics, chi-square and regression analysis.Results: The reminder performance for interactions with the alert was 17.2% across the two clinics. The Number Needed to Remind (NNR) or mean number of alerts shown on clinician screens prior to a single interaction of any kind with the alert was 5.8. Abstract

Absolute rate constants for the deactivation of O(1D) atoms by some atmospheric gases have been determined by observing the time-resolved emission of O(1D) at 630 nm. O(1D) atoms were produced by the dissociation of ozone via repetitive laser pulses at 266 nm. Absolute rate constants for the relaxation of O(1D) at 298 K are reported for N2, O2, CO2, O3, H2, D2, CH4, HCl, NH3, H2O, N2O, and Ne. The results obtained are compared with previous relative and absolute measurements reported in the literature.

Abstract

Occurrence of culturable Fungi and Oomycota in root-soil habitat of potato cv. Owacja in organic and integrated production systems at Osiny (northern Poland) was compared in 2008-2010. The densities of both pathogens were significantly greater in the organic system. The eudominant fungal taxa (with frequency > 10% in at least one habitat) included species of Fusarium + Gibberella + Haematonectria, Penicillium, Phoma and Trichoderma. The dominant taxa (with frequency 5-10%) included species from 13 genera. In the rhizoplane, rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil, the total density of potential pathogens was greater in the integrated system, and of potential antagonists in the organic system. Among eudominant and dominant pathogens, Fusarium oxysporum and Gibellulopsis nigrescens occurred at greater density in the integrated system and Haematonectria haematococca and Phoma spp. in the organic system. Among eudominant antagonists, Trichoderma species occurred at greater density in the organic system. The organic system provided more disease suppressive habitat than the integrated system. The occurrence of brown leaf spot and potato blight was however similar in both systems. The mean yield of organic potatoes (24.9 t · ha-1) was higher than the mean organic potato yield in Poland (21.0 t · ha-1) and similar to the mean in other European countries (Germany 25.1 t · ha-1, Great Britain 25.0 t · ha-1). The organic system, based on a 5-year rotation, with narrow-leafed lupin, white mustard and buckwheat as a cover crop, inorganic fertilization based on ground rock phosphate + potassium sulphate, and biological and chemical control of insects and diseases (Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. tenebrionis + copper hydroxide + copper oxychloride), may be recommended for use in central Europe.

The use of clinical decision support (CDS) within an electronic medical record (EMR) could improve medication safety.Methods: Participatory action research methods were applied to preproduction design and development and postproduction optimization of an EMR-embedded CDS implementation of the Beers’ Criteria for medication management and the Cockcroft–Gault formula for estimating glomerular filtration rates (GFR). The “Seniors Medication Alert and Review Technologies” (SMART) intervention was used in primary care and geriatrics specialty clinics. Passive (chart messages) and active (order-entry alerts) prompts exposed potentially inappropriate medications, decreased GFR, and the possible need for medication adjustments. Physician reactions were assessed using surveys, EMR simulations, focus groups, and semi-structured interviews. EMR audit data were used to identify eligible patient encounters, the frequency of CDS events, how alerts were managed, and when evidence links were followed.Results: Analysis of subjective data revealed that most clinicians agreed that CDS appeared at appropriate times during patient care. Although managing alerts incurred a modest time burden, most also agreed that workflow was not disrupted. Prevalent concerns related to clinician accountability and potential liability. Approximately 36% of eligible encounters triggered at least one SMART alert, with GFR alert, and most frequent medication warnings were with hypnotics and anticholinergics. Approximately 25% of alerts were overridden and ~15% elicited an evidence check.Conclusion: While most SMART alerts validated clinician choices, they were received as valuable reminders for evidence-informed care and education. Data from this study may aid other attempts to implement Beers’ Criteria in ambulatory care EMRs. 50. Practical applications of a monoclonal antibody (NDOG2) against placental alkaline phosphatase in ovarian cancer.

Abstract

A monoclonal antibody (NDOG2) against placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) in ovarian cancer has been used in three ways by the Bristol University Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. First, in an indirect immunoperoxidase technique, NDOG2 demonstrated positive standing in 64% of 56 ovarian carcinomas as well as in 25% of 44 benign tumours. The majority of these positive tumours were serous cystadenocarcinomas or serous cystadenomas and there was considerable variation in the expression of this antigen from tumour to tumour. NDOG2 was also used as the basis of two serum assays and, when labelled with 123-iodine (123I), in radioimmunoscintigraphy (RIS) to monitor patients' response to therapy. The first serum assay measures the enzymic activity of PLAP and the second recognizes the antigenicity of the molecules. Assay 2 proved more useful in that it predicted the course of the disease in 45% of patients followed up, whereas Assay 1 was only of use in 25% of cases. RIS proved to be a useful imaging technique and was at least as sensitive as conventional imaging techniques. The common causes of false-positive and false-negative results are described.
