Despite the widespread applications of C–H functionalization, controlling site selectivity remains a significant challenge. Covalently attached directing groups (DGs) served as ancillary ligands to ensure ortho-, meta- and para-C–H functionalization over the last two decades. These covalently linked DGs necessitate two extra steps for a single C–H functionalization: introduction of DG prior to C–H activation and removal of DG post-functionalization. Here we report a temporary directing group (TDG) for meta-C–H functionalization via reversible imine formation. By overruling facile ortho-C–H bond activation by imine-N atom, a suitably designed pyrimidine-based TDG successfully delivered selective meta-C–C bond formation. Application of this temporary directing group strategy for streamlining the synthesis of complex organic molecules without any necessary pre-functionalization at the meta position has been explored., Site-selective C–H functionalization still faces some challenges, such as the introduction and removal of an appropriate directing group. The synthesis of novel, highly functionalized, C 2-symmetric sulfur-based catalysts is developed and their catalytic applications are explored in asymmetric bromo-, iodo- and seleno-functionalizations of alkenoic acids. This protocol provides the corresponding normal- and medium-sized bromo, iodo and selenolactones in up to 98% yield and 83% stereoselectivity.

The development of efficient and mild methods for the synthesis of organofluorine compounds is of foremost interest in various fields of chemistry. A direct pyrimidine-based selective meta-C-H perfluoroalkenylation of arenes involving several commercially available perfluoroolefins is described. The synthetic versatility of the protocol is demonstrated by an extensive substrate scope including different benzylsulfonyl, alkylarene and phenylacetic acid scaffolds. The generality of this methodology including the meta-C-H perfluoroalkenylation of Ibuprofen, the facile cleavage of the directing group and gram-scale reactions are presented.

Distal C-H bond functionalization of heterocycles remained extremely challenging with covalently attached directing groups (DG). Lack of proper site for DG attachment and inherent catalyst poisoning by heterocycles demand alternate routes for site selective functionalization of their distal C-H bonds. Utilizing non-productive coordinating property to hold the heterocycle into the cavity of a template system in a host-guest manner, we report distal C-H alkylation (C-5 of quinoline and thiazole, C-7 of benzothiazole and benzoxazole) of heterocycles. Upon complexation with heterocyclic substrate, nitrile DG in template directs the metal catalyst towards close vicinity of the specific distal C-H bond of the heterocycles. Our hypothesized pathway has been supported by various X-ray crystallographically characterized intermediates.

A simple base and ligand free copper catalyzed method for the construction of trifluoromethylated benzoxazines has been developed by using Umemoto's reagent. It involves the oxidative difunctionalization of alkenes through tandem C-O and C-CF3 bond formations. Furthermore, synthesized benzoxazines were selectively converted into trifluoromethylated allylic and (E)-vinylic benzamides by the treatment of KO(t)Bu and CH3Li, respectively.

A KO(t)Bu-mediated intermolecular oxidative C-C coupling of nitroarenes with indoles is presented in DMSO at room temperature in an open flask. By using this mild and economical methodology, syntheses of β-(2/4-nitroaryl)-indoles with sensitive functionalities such as bromo, iodo, cyano, and nitro were achieved chemo- and regioselectively. Synthesized β-(2/4-nitroaryl) indoles were transformed into densely functionalized biindoles, indoloindoles, and (4-aminoaryl)-indoles which demonstrate post-transformation utility of the developed methodology.

Unprecedented light-induced oxidant and metal-free tandem radical cyclization–trifluoromethylation and dehydrogenative oxygenation of 1,6-enynes have been achieved using a photoredox catalyst, CF3SO2Na, and water as the oxygen source., Generally, oxy-trifluoromethylation in olefins is achieved using oxidants and transition metal catalysts. However, labile olefins remain unexplored due to their incompatibility with harsh reaction conditions. Here, unprecedented light-induced oxidant and metal-free tandem radical cyclization–trifluoromethylation and dehydrogenative oxygenation of 1,6-enynes have been achieved using a photoredox catalyst, CF3SO2Na, and phenanthrene-9,10-dione (PQ), Langlois’ reagent (CF3SO2Na) and water as the oxygen source. This benign protocol allows for access to various CF3-containing C3-aryloyl/acylated benzofurans, benzothiophenes, and indoles. Moreover, the oxidized undesired products, which are inherently formed by the cleavage of the vinylic carbon and heteroatom bond, have been circumvented under oxidant free conditions. The mechanistic investigations by UV-visible and ESR spectroscopy, electrochemical studies, isotope labelling and density functional theory (DFT) suggest that light induced PQ produced a CF3 radical from CF3SO2Na. The generated CF3 radical adds to the alkene, followed by cyclization, to provide a vinylic radical that transfers an electron to PQ and generates a vinylic cation. Alternatively, electron transfer may occur from the CF3-added alkene moiety, forming a carbocation, which would undergo cationic cyclization to generate a vinylic carbocation. The subsequent addition of water to the vinylic cation, followed by the elimination of hydrogen gas, led to the formation of trifluoromethylated C3-aryloyl/acylated heterocycles.

A series of electron withdrawing or donating group substituted phenols were chemoselectively arylated with various substituted bromo-nitroarenes using KO(t)Bu at room temperature via an SNAr pathway. The synthesis of natural alkaloids (carbazoles), dibenzofurans, and a biaryl-indole was achieved from the synthesized nitro-biaryl-ols.

A catalytic system consisting of bis(4-methoxyphenyl)selenide and 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) has been developed for the regioselective synthesis of medium-sized bromo/iodo lactones and bromooxepanes possessing high transannular strain. (77)Se NMR, mass spectrometry and theoretical studies reveal that the reaction proceeds via a quaternary selenium intermediate.

In this study Co(Ni)/MoS2 unsupported nanocatalysts (nanorods and nanoribbons) were synthesized with Co(Ni)/(Co(Ni) + Mo) = 0.3, 0.5 molar ratios for Co and Ni respectively. First the alpha-MoO3 nanostructures were impregnated with an aqueous solution of Co(Ni)Cl2 x 6H2O or Co(Ni)(NO3)2 x 6H2O, then were treated for 2 h at 473 K, and finally the precursors were activated under a H2S/H2 mixture (15% v/v H2S) by ramping the temperature from room temperature to 773 K and keeping it at that value for 2 h. The resulting materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, specific surface area and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and tested as catalysts for the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT). It was found that these materials presented specific surface areas below 25 m2/g. The catalytic test showed that only when Co is added a promoter effect is observed compared with MoS2 unpromoted catalysts. Among the materials prepared, the Co/MoS2 catalyst made from cobalt chloride presented the highest catalytic activity (6.95 mol s(-1) g(-1)catalyst) for the HDS of DBT. The selectivity for the latter indicated a clear preference for the direct desulphurization over the hydrogenating pathway.
