8. Molecular Epidemiological Study of a Mass Outbreak Caused by Enteropathogenic Escherichia coliO157:H45

Abstract

We made a molecular analysis of O157:H45 Escherichia coliisolated from a mass outbreak that occurred in Obihiro City. Using DNA analysis, we confirmed this infection case as a mass outbreak. Although the isolates expressed O157 antigen, they did not produce Vero toxin. We concluded they were enteropathogenic E. coli(EPEC) because they had a bfpgene and an EAF plasmid, and further they exhibited local adherence to HEp‐2 cells. We believe this is the first report of a mass outbreak by O157 EPEC, and we suggest that PCR using eae‐ and bfp‐specific primers and HEp‐2 adherence assay are useful to identify EPEC.

9. Effect of Infrasound and Low Frequency Sound Exposure at Intensities below 100 dB(SPL) on the Rota-Rod Treadmill Performance of Guinea Pigs

Abstract

A preliminary study to investigate whether or not long-term exposure to very low frequency sound at a moderate intensity below 100 dB(SPL) affects the vestibular function and/or motor coordination in guinea pigs was carried out. At first, optimal conditions of Rota-Rod Treadmill performance for guinea pigs were determined. Then, 20 and 40 Hz-low frequency sound at 80–90 dB(SPL) exposure was used for 150 minutes and measurement of the endurance time on the Rota-Rod Treadmill was carried out at rotation speeds of 8 rpm or 10 rpm. At 10 rpm rotation speed, and 20 Hz, 90 dB(SPL) stimulus, the endurance time was significantly reduced at 150 minutes, compared with that of the control, whereas no significant reduction in endurance time was obtained at 85 dB(SPL).

Abstract

Effects of a single exposure to toluene at a concentration of 1000 ppm for 4 h on rats' systolic blood pressure were investigated. 9 rats were used in each group (control and exposed groups). The basic blood pressure of the exposed group was significantly lower than that of the control group. The movement of systolic blood pressure due to impulse noise exposure was significantly smaller in the exposed group than in the control group. Toluene exposure at concentration of 1000 ppm for 4 h produced narcotic and inhibitory actions in the diencephalohypophysial and the adrenal gland system in rats.

Abstract

Rats were exposed to toluene at a concentration of 1000 ppm, 6 h/day, 6 times weekly, for 4 weeks. Functional disturbance of the circadian rhythm of spontaneous activity was found after repeated exposure to toluene, although single exposure under the same conditions did not influence the rhythm. The disturbance was characterized by a significant increase in distribution of activity in the ‘Light’ (L) period, and a significant relationship was observed between the total number of days of exposure and the activity level in the L period. The toluene concentration in the blood immediately after the exposure was 6.8–7.2 μg/ml after one and 18 days of exposure, respectively.
