Myiasis is an infestation of vertebrates with dipteran larvae. In humans myiasis of cutaneous wound is common and that of the oral cavity is less common. Oral myiasis occurs due to deposition of eggs by the female fly belonging to Chrysomyabezziana. The condition is common in patients unable to maintain proper oral hygiene such as mentally challenged individuals, epileptic patients, patients with cerebrovascular accidents and those with non-healing oral ulcers. Predisposing factors include mouth breathing, incompetent lip seal, alcoholism, halitosis, poor oral hygiene, disability, senility, facial trauma, periodontal diseases and oral extraction wounds. Presence of oral myiasis in patients who are medically stable and able to maintain good oral hygiene is rare. Due to increasing incidence of predisposing factors, myiasis can also occur in those who cannot maintain a lip seal. Here we present a case of oral myiasis in a medically stable male individual with chronic alcoholism and discuss the entomological aspect, identification and management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In imaging spectroscopy, gathering oral tissue spectral data from resected samples may not accurately represent tissue signatures due to time-dependent changes, blood loss, protein degeneration, and preservation chemicals. In-vivo spectral imaging is employed to address these limitations, but it poses challenges like device dimensions, tissue accessibility, and motion artifacts, impacting data quality and reliability. Our study publishes a dataset of spectral images focusing on oral diseases, addressing these challenges. We used a state-of-the-art multispectral camera, capturing images at 270*510 pixels resolution in 16 spectral bands (460 nm to 600 nm). The dataset includes 91 participants (15 healthy and 76 diseased), with multiple images per patient, totalling 243 spectral images. The dataset encompasses three oral health conditions: Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF), Leukoplakia, and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). Detailed patient history records accompany each case. This publicly available oral health multispectral dataset has the potential to advance spectroscopy diagnosis. Context: Age estimation in forensics employ various methods of which Raman microspectroscopy provides a noninvasive method by assessing various parts of dentin., Aim and Objectives: The aim of this study is to ascertain the age of carious tooth using Raman spectra of apical dentin and to correlate the similarity of the spectra in a defined age group., Settings and Design: Teeth of known age from Indian population (n=48) and morphology (incisors, canine, premolars, molars) indicated for extraction due to caries were allocated into four groups, i.e., Group A (21-30 years), Group B (31-40 years), Group C (41-50 years) and Group D (51-60 years)., Materials and Methods: Teeth were sectioned and the apical 2 mm of dentin was examined by a Raman microspectroscopy machine for spectra from 400 cm -1 to 1500 cm -1 , and peak at phosphate group at 963 cm -1 was taken for statistical analysis., Statistical Analysis Used: The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 20.0., Results: Pearson's correlation to test the strength of linear relation of the spectra of the teeth within an age group showed an " r " value approaching 1. Inversion has been defined as the malposition of a tooth in which the tooth is reversed and positioned upside down. Very few cases of inverted and impacted third molars have been reported in the literature. The most common location of such a third molar in the mandible is in the ascending ramus. In the maxilla, the teeth may be displaced as far as the floor of the orbit. Two cases of inverted and impacted third molars are described. They were conservatively managed without surgery. Background: Radiation mucositis is an early effect of head and neck radiotherapy. Mucositis can cause ulcers, and patients may experience pain and dysphagia which need proper management. This study was conducted in 60 patients with oral malignancy., Aim: To evaluate the effect of natural honey and 0.15% benzydamine hydrochloride on onset and severity of radiation mucositis and to compare it with control., Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Tamilnadu Government Dental College and Hospital, Chennai, from April to December 2010. The sample size comprised of 60 patients, of both genders, diagnosed with oral malignancy clinically and histopathologically and planned for radiotherapy. The patients were assigned into three groups by random sampling. Each group consisted of 20 patients. Group 1 patients were instructed for topical application of natural honey, groups 2 and 3 were instructed for topical application of 0.15% benzydamine hydrochloride and 0.9% normal saline respectively. The onset of mucositis and the severity of mucositis were graded during the course of the radiotherapy and two weeks after radiotherapy, with WHO mucositis grading in all the three groups and statistically analysed with SPSS version 11 software., Results: A significant reduction in mucositis in honey-received patients compared with 0.15% benzydamine hydrochloride, 0.9% normal saline applied patients occurred. The differences between the groups were statistically significant (P < 0.001)., Conclusion: Pure natural honey can be an effective agent in managing radiation induced oral mucositis. Honey could be a simple, potent and inexpensive agent, which is easily available, and it can be a better therapeutic agent in managing radiation mucositis in developing countries like India for the management of this morbidity.

Aims: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of color doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) in differentiating metastatic from reactive lymph nodes in oral cancer patients., Material and Methods: Study comprised 80 adult subjects with oral cancer, divided in two groups based on clinical criteria. Group I included 40 patients with clinically suspected metastatic cervical lymph nodes, Group II included 40 patients with clinically suspected reactive cervical lymph nodes. Study population was evaluated with CDUS for color flow signals and intranodal vascular resistance (Pulsatility Index and Resistivity Index), followed by Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology, used as a standard, to confirm the etiology of the lymph node enlargement., Statistical Analysis Used: Chi-Square Test (SPSS 15.0 version) was used to evaluate the significance of the parameters used between the two study groups., Results: Sensitivity of CDUS by vascular flow pattern was 94.1%, specificity of 100%, with accuracy of 95.4% and by vascular indices the sensitivity was 81.4%, specificity of 100%, and accuracy of 85.5%, with statistically significant correlation.(P < 0.05), Conclusion: CDUS plays a definitive role as an adjunct to clinical evaluation of differentiating metastatic from reactive cervical lymph involvement in patients with oral cancer as it aid in grading and staging of oral cancer and can determine the treatment plan prognosis and morbidity by diminishing the possibility nodal dissection.

Native fluorescence spectroscopy has shown potential to characterize and diagnose oral malignancy. We aim at extending the native fluorescence spectroscopy technique to characterize normal and oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) patients under pre- and post-treated conditions, and verify whether this method could also be considered in the monitoring of therapeutic prognosis noninvasively. In this study, 28 normal subjects and 28 clinically proven cases of OSF in the age group of 20 to 40 years are diagnosed using native fluorescence spectroscopy. The OSF patients are given dexamethasone sodium phosphate and hyaluronidase twice a week for 6 weeks, and the therapeutic response is monitored using fluorescence spectroscopy. The fluorescence emission spectra of normal and OSF cases of both pre- and post-treated conditions are recorded in the wavelength region of 350 to 600 nm at an excitation wavelength of 330 nm. The statistical significance is verified using discriminant analysis. The oxidation-reduction ratio of the tissue is also calculated using the fluorescence emission intensities of flavin adenine dinucleotide and nicotinamide adinine dinucleotide at 530 and 440 nm, respectively, and they are compared with conventional physical clinical examinations. This study suggests that native fluorescence spectroscopy could also be extended to OSF diagnosis and therapeutic prognosis.
