This paper presents NFDIcore 2.0, an ontology compliant with the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) designed to represent the diverse research communities of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany. NFDIcore ensures the interoperability across various research disciplines, thereby facilitating cross-domain research. Each domain's individual requirements are addressed through specific ontology modules. This paper discusses lessons learned during the ontology development and mapping process, supported by practical validation through use cases in diverse research domains. The originality of NFDIcore lies in its adherence to BFO, the use of SWRL rules for efficient knowledge discovery, and its modular, extensible design tailored to meet the needs of heterogeneous research domains.

The NFDI4DataScience (NFDI4DS) project aims to enhance the accessibility and interoperability of research data within Data Science (DS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) by connecting digital artifacts and ensuring they adhere to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles. To this end, this poster introduces the NFDI4DS Ontology, which describes resources in DS and AI and models the structure of the NFDI4DS consortium. Built upon the NFDICore ontology and mapped to the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), this ontology serves as the foundation for the NFDI4DS knowledge graph currently under development.

Ontologies are widely used in materials science to describe experiments, processes, material properties, and experimental and computational workflows. Numerous online platforms are available for accessing and sharing ontologies in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). Additionally, several surveys of these ontologies have been conducted. However, these studies often lack comprehensive analysis and quality control metrics. This paper provides an overview of ontologies used in Materials Science and Engineering to assist domain experts in selecting the most suitable ontology for a given purpose. Sixty selected ontologies are analyzed and compared based on the requirements outlined in this paper. Statistical data on ontology reuse and key metrics are also presented. The evaluation results provide valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the investigated MSE ontologies. This enables domain experts to select suitable ontologies and to incorporate relevant terms from existing resources.

Ontology and knowledge graph matching systems are evaluated annually by the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI). More and more systems use machine learning-based approaches, including large language models. The training and validation datasets are usually determined by the system developer and often a subset of the reference alignments are used. This sampling is against the OAEI rules and makes a fair comparison impossible. Furthermore, those models are trained offline (a trained and optimized model is packaged into the matcher) and therefore the systems are specifically trained for those tasks. In this paper, we introduce a dataset that contains training, validation, and test sets for most of the OAEI tracks. Thus, online model learning (the systems must adapt to the given input alignment without human intervention) is made possible to enable a fair comparison for ML-based systems. Terminology sources, such as controlled vocabularies, thesauri and classification systems, play a key role in digitizing cultural heritage. However, Information Retrieval (IR) systems that allow to query and explore these lexical resources often lack an adequate representation of the semantics behind the user's search, which can be conveyed through multiple expression modalities (e.g., images, keywords or textual descriptions). This paper presents the implementation of a new search engine for one of the most widely used iconography classification system, Iconclass. The novelty of this system is the use of a pre-trained vision-language model, namely CLIP, to retrieve and explore Iconclass concepts using visual or textual queries.

Due to the open world assumption, Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are never complete. In order to address this issue, various Link Prediction (LP) methods are proposed so far. Some of these methods are inductive LP models which are capable of learning representations for entities not seen during training. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of the existing inductive LP models focus on learning representations for unseen relations. In this work, a novel Relation Aware Inductive Link preDiction (RAILD) is proposed for KG completion which learns representations for both unseen entities and unseen relations. In addition to leveraging textual literals associated with both entities and relations by employing language models, RAILD also introduces a novel graph-based approach to generate features for relations. Experiments are conducted with different existing and newly created challenging benchmark datasets and the results indicate that RAILD leads to performance improvement over the state-of-the-art models. Moreover, since there are no existing inductive LP models which learn representations for unseen relations, we have created our own baselines and the results obtained with RAILD also outperform these baselines.

The entity type information in Knowledge Graphs (KGs) such as DBpedia, Freebase, etc. is often incomplete due to automated generation or human curation. Entity typing is the task of assigning or inferring the semantic type of an entity in a KG. This paper presents \textit{GRAND}, a novel approach for entity typing leveraging different graph walk strategies in RDF2vec together with textual entity descriptions. RDF2vec first generates graph walks and then uses a language model to obtain embeddings for each node in the graph. This study shows that the walk generation strategy and the embedding model have a significant effect on the performance of the entity typing task. The proposed approach outperforms the baseline approaches on the benchmark datasets DBpedia and FIGER for entity typing in KGs for both fine-grained and coarse-grained classes. The results show that the combination of order-aware RDF2vec variants together with the contextual embeddings of the textual entity descriptions achieve the best results.

Scholarly data is growing continuously containing information about the articles from a plethora of venues including conferences, journals, etc. Many initiatives have been taken to make scholarly data available as Knowledge Graphs (KGs). These efforts to standardize these data and make them accessible have also led to many challenges such as exploration of scholarly articles, ambiguous authors, etc. This study more specifically targets the problem of Author Name Disambiguation (AND) on Scholarly KGs and presents a novel framework, Literally Author Name Disambiguation (LAND), which utilizes Knowledge Graph Embeddings (KGEs) using multimodal literal information generated from these KGs. This framework is based on three components: 1) Multimodal KGEs, 2) A blocking procedure, and finally, 3) Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering. Extensive experiments have been conducted on two newly created KGs: (i) KG containing information from Scientometrics Journal from 1978 onwards (OC-782K), and (ii) a KG extracted from a well-known benchmark for AND provided by AMiner (AMiner-534K). The results show that our proposed architecture outperforms our baselines of 8-14% in terms of the F1 score and shows competitive performances on a challenging benchmark such as AMiner. With the increasing trend in the topic of migration in Europe, the public is now more engaged in expressing their opinions through various platforms such as Twitter. Understanding the online discourses is therefore essential to capture the public opinion. The goal of this study is the analysis of social media platform to quantify public attitudes towards migrations and the identification of different factors causing these attitudes. The tweets spanning from 2013 to Jul-2021 in the European countries which are hosts to immigrants are collected, pre-processed, and filtered using advanced topic modeling technique. BERT-based entity linking and sentiment analysis, and attention-based hate speech detection are performed to annotate the curated tweets. Moreover, the external databases are used to identify the potential social and economic factors causing negative attitudes of the people about migration. To further promote research in the interdisciplinary fields of social science and computer science, the outcomes are integrated into a Knowledge Base (KB), i.e., MigrationsKB which significantly extends the existing models to take into account the public attitudes towards migrations and the economic indicators. The field of Materials Science is concerned with, e.g., properties and performance of materials. An important class of materials are crystalline materials that usually contain ``dislocations'' -- a line-like defect type. Dislocation decisively determine many important materials properties. Over the past decades, significant effort was put into understanding dislocation behavior across different length scales both with experimental characterization techniques as well as with simulations. However, for describing such dislocation structures there is still a lack of a common standard to represent and to connect dislocation domain knowledge across different but related communities. An ontology offers a common foundation to enable knowledge representation and data interoperability, which are important components to establish a ``digital twin''. This paper outlines the first steps towards the design of an ontology in the dislocation domain and shows a connection with the already existing ontologies in the materials science and engineering domain.

One of the grand challenges discussed during the Dagstuhl Seminar "Knowledge Graphs: New Directions for Knowledge Representation on the Semantic Web" and described in its report is that of a: "Public FAIR Knowledge Graph of Everything: We increasingly see the creation of knowledge graphs that capture information about the entirety of a class of entities. [...] This grand challenge extends this further by asking if we can create a knowledge graph of "everything" ranging from common sense concepts to location based entities. This knowledge graph should be "open to the public" in a FAIR manner democratizing this mass amount of knowledge." Although linked open data (LOD) is one knowledge graph, it is the closest realisation (and probably the only one) to a public FAIR Knowledge Graph (KG) of everything. Surely, LOD provides a unique testbed for experimenting and evaluating research hypotheses on open and FAIR KG. One of the most neglected FAIR issues about KGs is their ongoing evolution and long term preservation. We want to investigate this problem, that is to understand what preserving and supporting the evolution of KGs means and how these problems can be addressed. Clearly, the problem can be approached from different perspectives and may require the development of different approaches, including new theories, ontologies, metrics, strategies, procedures, etc. This document reports a collaborative effort performed by 9 teams of students, each guided by a senior researcher as their mentor, attending the International Semantic Web Research School (ISWS 2019). Each team provides a different perspective to the problem of knowledge graph evolution substantiated by a set of research questions as the main subject of their investigation. In addition, they provide their working definition for KG preservation and evolution.

Open Knowledge Graphs (such as DBpedia, Wikidata, YAGO) have been recognized as the backbone of diverse applications in the field of data mining and information retrieval. Hence, the completeness and correctness of the Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are vital. Most of these KGs are mostly created either via an automated information extraction from Wikipedia snapshots or information accumulation provided by the users or using heuristics. However, it has been observed that the type information of these KGs is often noisy, incomplete, and incorrect. To deal with this problem a multi-label classification approach is proposed in this work for entity typing using KG embeddings. We compare our approach with the current state-of-the-art type prediction method and report on experiments with the KGs.

Most Knowledge Graphs (KGs) contain textual descriptions of entities in various natural languages. These descriptions of entities provide valuable information that may not be explicitly represented in the structured part of the KG. Based on this fact, some link prediction methods which make use of the information presented in the textual descriptions of entities have been proposed to learn representations of (monolingual) KGs. However, these methods use entity descriptions in only one language and ignore the fact that descriptions given in different languages may provide complementary information and thereby also additional semantics. In this position paper, the problem of effectively leveraging multilingual entity descriptions for the purpose of link prediction in KGs will be discussed along with potential solutions to the problem.

Representation Learning of words and Knowledge Graphs (KG) into low dimensional vector spaces along with its applications to many real-world scenarios have recently gained momentum. In order to make use of multiple KG embeddings for knowledge-driven applications such as question answering, named entity disambiguation, knowledge graph completion, etc., alignment of different KG embedding spaces is necessary. In addition to multilinguality and domain-specific information, different KGs pose the problem of structural differences making the alignment of the KG embeddings more challenging. This paper provides a theoretical analysis and comparison of the state-of-the-art alignment methods between two embedding spaces representing entity-entity and entity-word. This paper also aims at assessing the capability and short-comings of the existing alignment methods on the pretext of different applications.

Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are composed of structured information about a particular domain in the form of entities and relations. In addition to the structured information KGs help in facilitating interconnectivity and interoperability between different resources represented in the Linked Data Cloud. KGs have been used in a variety of applications such as entity linking, question answering, recommender systems, etc. However, KG applications suffer from high computational and storage costs. Hence, there arises the necessity for a representation able to map the high dimensional KGs into low dimensional spaces, i.e., embedding space, preserving structural as well as relational information. This paper conducts a survey of KG embedding models which not only consider the structured information contained in the form of entities and relations in a KG but also the unstructured information represented as literals such as text, numerical values, images, etc. Along with a theoretical analysis and comparison of the methods proposed so far for generating KG embeddings with literals, an empirical evaluation of the different methods under identical settings has been performed for the general task of link prediction.

Linked Open Data (LOD) is the publicly available RDF data in the Web. Each LOD entity is identfied by a URI and accessible via HTTP. LOD encodes globalscale knowledge potentially available to any human as well as artificial intelligence that may want to benefit from it as background knowledge for supporting their tasks. LOD has emerged as the backbone of applications in diverse fields such as Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Computer Vision, Speech Recognition, and many more. Nevertheless, regardless of the specific tasks that LOD-based tools aim to address, the reuse of such knowledge may be challenging for diverse reasons, e.g. semantic heterogeneity, provenance, and data quality. As aptly stated by Heath et al. Linked Data might be outdated, imprecise, or simply wrong": there arouses a necessity to investigate the problem of linked data validity. This work reports a collaborative effort performed by nine teams of students, guided by an equal number of senior researchers, attending the International Semantic Web Research School (ISWS 2018) towards addressing such investigation from different perspectives coupled with different approaches to tackle the issue.

Many datasets change over time. As a consequence, long-running applications that cache and repeatedly use query results obtained from a SPARQL endpoint may resubmit the queries regularly to ensure up-to-dateness of the results. While this approach may be feasible if the number of such regular refresh queries is manageable, with an increasing number of applications adopting this approach, the SPARQL endpoint may become overloaded with such refresh queries. A more scalable approach would be to use a middle-ware component at which the applications register their queries and get notified with updated query results once the results have changed. Then, this middle-ware can schedule the repeated execution of the refresh queries without overloading the endpoint. In this paper, we study the problem of scheduling refresh queries for a large number of registered queries by assuming an overload-avoiding upper bound on the length of a regular time slot available for testing refresh queries. We investigate a variety of scheduling strategies and compare them experimentally in terms of time slots needed before they recognize changes and number of changes that they miss., Comment: This document is an extended version of a paper published in ODBASE 2016

Today's Web of Data is noisy. Linked Data often needs extensive preprocessing to enable efficient use of heterogeneous resources. While consistent and valid data provides the key to efficient data processing and aggregation we are facing two main challenges: (1st) Identification of erroneous facts and tracking their origins in dynamically connected datasets is a difficult task, and (2nd) efforts in the curation of deficient facts in Linked Data are exchanged rather rarely. Since erroneous data often is duplicated and (re-)distributed by mashup applications it is not only the responsibility of a few original publishers to keep their data tidy, but progresses to be a mission for all distributers and consumers of Linked Data too. We present a new approach to expose and to reuse patches on erroneous data to enhance and to add quality information to the Web of Data.
