1. Towards the formation of a positronium coherent beam

Abstract

Positronium (Ps) has emerged as a promising test particle within the QUPLAS collaboration for investigating the gravitational effect. In this work, we present a novel approach to generate a monoenergetic and highly coherent Ps beam by creating a negative Ps ion (Ps$^-$, consisting of two electrons and one positron). The necessary positron beam is formed by using a high flux electron LINAC. Subsequently, we utilize a Fabry-Perot IR laser cavity operating at a wavelength of 1560 nm to selectively remove the extra electron. An alternative pulsed laser operating at a 3600 nm wavelength was studied to reduce broadening due to recoil and excitation. Here, we provide a Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the characteristics of the Ps beam, including its energy distribution and intensity profiles. The results obtained from this study will provide essential groundwork for future advancements in fundamental studies as Ps gravity measurements by using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This paper reports the study of a new interferometric configuration to measure the effect of gravity on positronium. A Mach-Zehnder matter-wave interferometer has been designed to operate with single-photon transitions and to transfer high momentum to a 200 eV positronium beam. The work shows the results and methods used to simulate the interferometer and estimate the operating parameters and the time needed to perform the experiment. It has been estimated that within less than one year, the acquisition time is sufficient to achieve a 10\% accuracy level in measuring positronium gravitational acceleration, even with a poorly collimated beam, which is significant for theoretical models describing matter-antimatter symmetry. These results pave the way for single photon transition large momentum transfer interferometry with fast atomic beams, which is particularly useful for studies with antimatter and unstable atoms., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The validity of the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) as predicted by General Relativity has been tested up to astounding precision using ordinary matter. The lack hitherto of a stable source of a probe being at the same time electrically neutral, cold and stable enough to be measured has prevented highaccuracy testing of the WEP on anti-matter. The AEg̅IS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) experiment located at CERN's AD (Antiproton Decelerator) facility aims at producing such a probe in the form of a pulsed beam of cold anti-hydrogen, and at measuring by means of a moiré deflectometer the gravitational force that Earth's mass exerts on it. Low temperature and abundance of the H̅ are paramount to attain a high precision measurement. A technique employing a charge-exchange reaction between antiprotons coming from the AD and excited positronium atoms is being developed at AEg̅IS and will be presented hereafter, alongside an overview of the experimental apparatus and the current status of the experiment

Abstract

The weak equivalence principle states that the motion of a body in a gravitational field is independent of its structure or composition. This postulate of general relativity has been tested to very high precision with ordinary matter, but no relevant experimental verification with antimatter has ever been carried out. The AEGIS experiment will measure the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen to ultimately 1% precision. For this purpose, a pulsed horizontal antihydrogen beam with a velocity of several 100 m s−1 will be produced. Its vertical deflection due to gravity will be detected by a setup consisting of material gratings coupled with a position-sensitive detector, operating as a moiré deflectometer or an atom interferometer. The AEGIS experiment is installed at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator, currently the only facility in the world which produces copious amounts of low-energy antiprotons. The construction of the setup has been going on since 2010 and is nearing completion. A proof-of-principle experiment with antiprotons has demonstrated that the deflection of antiparticles by a few μm due to an external force can be detected. Technological and scientific development pertaining to specific challenges of the experiment, such as antihydrogen formation by positronium charge exchange or the position-sensitive detection of antihydrogen annihilations, is ongoing.

Abstract

Investigations on antimatter allow us to shed light on fundamental issues of contemporary physics. The only antiatom presently available, antihydrogen, is produced making use of the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility at CERN. International collaborations currently on the floor (ALPHA, ASACUSA and ATRAP) have succeeded in producing antihydrogen and are now involved in its confinement and manipulation. The AEGIS experiment is currently completing the commissioning of the apparatus which will generate and manipulate antiatoms. The present paper, after a report on the main results achieved with antihydrogen physics, gives an overview of the AEGIS experiment, describes its current status and discusses its first target.

Abstract

The characteristics of low energy antiproton annihilations on nuclei (e.g. hadronization and product multiplicities) are not well known, and Monte Carlo simulation packages that use different models provide different descriptions of the annihilation events. In this study, we measured the particle multiplicities resulting from antiproton annihilations on nuclei. The results were compared with predictions obtained using different models in the simulation tools GEANT4 and FLUKA. For this study, we exposed thin targets (Cu, Ag and Au) to a very low energy antiproton beam from CERN's Antiproton Decelerator, exploiting the secondary beamline available in the AEgIS experimental zone. The antiproton annihilation products were detected using emulsion films developed at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics in Bern, where they were analysed at the automatic microscope facility. The fragment multiplicity measured in this study is in good agreement with results obtained with FLUKA simulations for both minimally and heavily ionizing particles.

Abstract

An attempt is made to investigate grain growth and the anatase-to-rutile phase transition in nanostructured titania using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal analysis. Thermal analysis highlighted that oxygen mobility in the titania lattice is affected by doping and related to the inhibition of grain coalescence and phase transition.

Abstract

International audience; The present status of the AEGIS experiment at CERN (AD-06), on the way of forming anti-hydrogen for a first gravity measurement, is reviewed.Recent results in trapping and cooling positrons and antiprotons in the main electromagnetic traps are presented, including the storage time measurement obtained during the 2014 run with antiprotons, the observation of centrifugal separation of a mixed antiproton/electron plasma and positron accumulation and transfer results obtained during 2015.

Abstract

The AEgIS experiment at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator (AD) aims at performing a direct measurement of the gravitational force on antimatter to probe the Weak Equivalence Principle of General Relativity with antimatter. The idea is to measure the vertical displacement of a cold antihydrogen beam, due to the gravitational force, by using a moiré deflectometer. Antihydrogen will be formed through the reaction of charge exchange between cold antiprotons and Rydberg positronium. An overview of the physics goals, experimental setup and preliminary results is presented.

Abstract

International audience; The AEGIS experiment 1 (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is planned to perform the first measurement of the gravitational acceleration on antimatter by observing the free fall of antihydrogen atoms. By combining techniques based on recent developments in the production of positronium and its laser excitation to Rydberg states, such a study seems indeed to be feasible for neutral antimatter. We present here some of the experimental techniques involved in the experiment as well as the status of the detector test envisioned for the gravity measurement.

Abstract

International audience; In the sociology of small- to mid-sized (O(100) collaborators) experiments the issue of data collection and storage is sometimes felt as a residual problem for which well-established solutions are known. Still, the DAQ system can be one of the few forces that drive towards the integration of otherwise loosely coupled detector systems. As such it may be hard to complete with off-the-shelf components only. LabVIEW and ROOT are the (only) two software systems that were assumed to be familiar enough to all collaborators of the AEḡIS (AD6) experiment at CERN: working out of the GXML representation of LabVIEW Data types, a semantically equivalent representation as ROOT TTrees was developed for permanent storage and analysis. All data in the experiment is cast into this common format and can be produced and consumed on both systems and transferred over TCP and/or multicast over UDP for immediate sharing over the experiment LAN. We describe the setup that has been able to cater to all run data logging and long term monitoring needs of the AEḡIS experiment so far.

Abstract

Zinc oxide nano-powders with different morphologies have been synthesized using a wet chemical route, starting from an aqueous solution of Zn(NO3)2o 6H2O. The obtained powders shaped like nanoparticles, bipyramidal nanoaggregates, nanoneedles and flower-like nanostructures. The screen-printing technique has been adopted to deposit the functional materials in form of thick films onto miniaturized alumina substrates or onto silicon substrates for PL measurements. Acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, ethanol and ammonia have been used as testing gases, highlighting that the bipyramidal samples exhibited the best performances versus all gases, but especially toward acetone at sub-ppm level.

Abstract

Investigations on antimatter allow us to shed light on fundamental issues of contemporary physics. The only antiatom presently available, antihydrogen, is produced making use of the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility at CERN. International collaborations currently on the floor (ALPHA, ASACUSA and ATRAP) have succeeded in producing antihydrogen and are now involved in its confinement and manipulation. The AEGIS experiment is currently completing the commissioning of the apparatus which will generate and manipulate antiatoms. The present paper, after a report on the main results achieved with antihydrogen physics, gives an overview of the AEGIS experiment, describes its current status and discusses its first target.

Abstract

After the first production of cold antihydrogen by the ATHENA and ATRAP experiments ten years ago, new second-generation experiments are aimed at measuring the fundamental properties of this anti-atom. The goal of AEGIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is to test the weak equivalence principle by studying the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter with a pulsed, cold antihydrogen beam. The experiment is currently being assembled at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator. In AEGIS, antihydrogen will be produced by charge exchange of cold antiprotons with positronium excited to a high Rydberg state (n > 20). An antihydrogen beam will be produced by controlled acceleration in an electric-field gradient (Stark acceleration). The deflection of the horizontal beam due to its free fall in the gravitational field of the earth will be measured with a moiré deflectometer. Initially, the gravitational acceleration will be determined to a precision of 1%, requiring the detection of about 105 antihydrogen atoms. In this paper, after a general description, the present status of the experiment will be reviewed.

Abstract

AEgIS (Expérience sur l'Antimatière: Gravité, Interférométrie, Spectrométrie) est une expérience approuvée par le CERN qui vise une étude globale de la physique de l'anti-hydrogène. Dans AEgIS, l'anti-hydrogène sera produit par des réactions d'échange de charges d'anti-protons froids avec des atomes de positronium excités dans un état de Rydberg (n > 20). Dans la première phase de l'expérience, l'accélération est contrôlée par un gradient de champ électrique (effet Stark); une mesure subséquente en chute libre dans un déflectomètre de Moiré nous fournira un test du principe d'équivalence faible. Dans une deuxième phase, l'anti-hydrogène sera ralenti, confiné et refroidi par laser pour des études de CPT et de spectroscopie de précision. Après une description générale de l'expérience, nous passons ici en revue l'état d'avancement des travaux en accordant une attention particulière à la production et l'excitation des atomes de positronium.

Abstract

The main goal of the AEGIS experiment at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator is the test of fundamental laws such as the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) and CPT symmetry.
