- Abstract
The development of implicit and explicit racial attitudes were investigated in 542 White, Pardo, and Black Brazilian children and adolescents (aged 6 to 14) from 2 different regional contexts that vary dramatically in their racial diversity, Bahia (BA) and Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Results revealed the pervasive presence of race biases favoring higher status groups across multiple measures of implicit and explicit attitude. Contextual differences were also apparent, particularly in measures of group identification: Children from the more diverse context (BA), including Black children, identified themselves more strongly with lighter skin tones, particularly with Whites. Implicit attitudes were stable with age, whereas explicit attitudes generally showed less bias as a function of age. Implicit and explicit racial preference were related in younger but not older children, providing evidence of increasing divergence across early development. Differences between our findings and those reported from other regions underscores the need for greater diversity in our research efforts.

We conducted preregistered replications of 28 classic and contemporary published findings with protocols that were peer reviewed in advance to examine variation in effect magnitudes across sample and setting. Each protocol was administered to approximately half of 125 samples and 15,305 total participants from 36 countries and territories. Using conventional statistical significance (p < .05), fifteen (54%) of the replications provided evidence in the same direction and statistically significant as the original finding. With a strict significance criterion (p < .0001), fourteen (50%) provide such evidence reflecting the extremely high powered design. Seven (25%) of the replications had effect sizes larger than the original finding and 21 (75%) had effect sizes smaller than the original finding. The median comparable Cohen’s d effect sizes for original findings was 0.60 and for replications was 0.15. Sixteen replications (57%) had small effect sizes (< .20) and 9 (32%) were in the opposite direction from the original finding. Across settings, 11 (39%) showed significant heterogeneity using the Q statistic and most of those were among the findings eliciting the largest overall effect sizes; only one effect that was near zero in the aggregate showed significant heterogeneity. Only one effect showed a Tau > 0.20 indicating moderate heterogeneity. Nine others had a Tau near or slightly above 0.10 indicating slight heterogeneity. In moderation tests, very little heterogeneity was attributable to task order, administration in lab versus online, and exploratory WEIRD versus less WEIRD culture comparisons. Cumulatively, variability in observed effect sizes was more attributable to the effect being studied than the sample or setting in which it was studied.\ud \ud Data, materials and code available at: https://osf.io/8cd4r/

This paper aimed to assess the situation of children’s rights and the existence of corporal punishment in Angolan public primary schools. Both studies 1 and 2 used the ecological engagement as a methodological background. In study 1, quantitative, most of the 241 participants, children form 9 to 18 years old, said that at least once they have been grounded or victims of corporal punishment by teachers. In study 2, qualitative, all participants said that corporal punishment is frequently used in their schools. Although they do not like it, many of them said that this kind of punishment is a requisite for the learning process. Participants also identified infrastructural problems and lack of school suplies, water, electricity and food at the schools. Children’s rights are still incipient in Angola as a country and in the schools in particular. Participaram do estudo quantitativo 241 crianças e adolescentes.

This dissertation, composed by one theoretical and three empirical papers, aimed to investigate the development of race attitudes in children. The first study was a systematic review of Brazilian psychological studies on racial prejudice. The second one involved the development and validation of a set of children’s portraits to be used as stimuli on scientific research, the BIC-Multicor. The third one used implicit (Evaluative Priming and the Implicit Association Test) and explicit measures of attitude to investigate the development of race attitudes in White, Pardo and Black children (N = 542), aged six to 14, from Porto Alegre and Salvador. Implicit attitudes were different between cities and also between racial groups. The forth study assessed differences in racial categorization in Bahia, Rio Grande do Sul and the United States. Racial categorization was influenced by context and similar results were found between participants from Bahia and the US.

- Abstract
The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) provides research productivity grants (PQ) to professionals who meet certain criteria. Identifying the profile of PQ scholars from different fields of knowledge is important for the development of a broad mapping of the field and for the development of policies aimed at boosting scientific and technological development in sub-areas or specific locations. The goal of this study is to analyze the profile of CNPq PQ fellows working in Psychology, considering the three-year period concluded in 2014. The sample consisted of curricula from 338 productivity fellows working in Psychology. The data obtained from this survey indicated that six out of every 10 PQ fellows working in the field of Psychology are located on the layer 2 and that only 10 universities concentrate 56.7% of researchers awarded with PQ grants. There is still a high concentration in the Southeast, which receives 55.3% of grants and presents the highest proportion of PQ grants per inhabitants in Brazil. Fellows work mostly in public universities, mainly federal, and are mostly women. Moreover, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Psychological Treatment and Prevention are the most frequent fields among researchers who receive PQ grants. The identification of regional inequalities, concentration of grants in only a few institutions and also gender disparities, for example, can contribute so that questions regarding resource distribution can be reassessed., Resumo O Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) confere bolsas de produtividade em pesquisa (PQ) aos profissionais que preenchem determinados critérios.

This dissertation aimed to know the opinion of Angolan children with respect to their schools, investigate how the school of their dreams is and to verify how children’s rights are received in those institutions. This study encompassed Angola’s public primary education system, represented by 15 schools located in five Angolan provinces. The children participated in group interviews and the method used during data collection was the ecological engagement. Data analysis was done through the Bioecological Theory of Human Development and the results indicate that the interaction among children, teachers, directors and schools are characterized by the imbalance of power and authoritarianism, reason why the relationship lacks reciprocity. Children’s dream school is a place with minimal infrastructure where they feel welcomed and respected. In general, the promotion and respect to children’s rights are still incipient in Angola, especially in schools.

- Abstract
Culture shapes the meaning of race and, consequently, who is placed into which racial categories. Three experiments conducted in the United States and Brazil illustrated the cultural nature of racial categorization. In Experiment 1, a target’s racial ancestry influenced Americans’ categorizations but had no impact on Brazilians’ categorizations. Experiment 2 showed cultural differences in the reliance on two phenotypic cues to race; Brazilians’ categorizations were more strongly determined by skin tone than were Americans’ categorizations, and Americans’ categorizations were more strongly determined by other facial features compared to Brazilians' categorizations. Experiment 3 demonstrated cultural differences in the motivated use of racial categories. When the racial hierarchy was threatened, only Americans more strictly enforced the Black–White racial boundary. Cultural forces shape the conceptual, perceptual, and ideological construal of racial categories.

Prosociality, in the eyes of some evolution theorists, is seen as the key to understanding the success of humanity, being a factor found present from the first months of child development. The objective behind the present thesis is to investigate the effect of the exclusion suffered by pardo and black people, and the belonginess social group, on prosocial behavior in Brazilian children. To achieve this goal, use was made of implicit and explicit measures. The first chapter is a general introduction. The second chapter brings a theoretical review of the theories of evolution that cover prosocial behavior, and which focus on the theory of cultural evolution. The third chapter is composed of a systematic review of studies that investigate the effects of priming on prosocial behavior in children. The fourth chapter comprises of three empirical studies that analyze, (1) the association between sharing and the identification of the child how white, pardo and black, (2) the effect of skin color in prosocial priming, and (3) the choice of a black or white character as friends. Our findings pointed to an association between the identification how white, pardo and black of the child and sharing; an increase in sharing under the condition with prosocial priming, regardless of skin color bias; and the preference of a white character as a friend. The fifth chapter reports on the construction and validation of the Implicit Association Test for assessing prosociality in children (IAT-PSC). The test presented good internal consistency and a satisfactory validation of the items. The sixth chapter is comprised of two studies, in which the participants are children that reside in urban areas, rural zones and in quilombo communities. The results demonstrate greater sharing among urban children, but greater implicit prosocial preference among children from quilombo communities. Lastly, the seventh chapter summarizes the general conclusions of the thesis. When taken together, our studies suggest that ostracism, prejudice, and group belonging are factors that influence prosocial behavior in children, both explicitly and implicitly.
