Recent research has shown that Avocado-Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU) greatly reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA). It’s yet unknown exactly how ASU works, however, it has been demonstrated to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. These qualities can potentially lessen the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) and their secondary effects. This review aims to examine the current literature on ASU, focusing on their efficacy, mechanism of action, and potential utility in treating OA for managing chronic pain associated with this condition. The literature review was conducted manually through Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) databases, covering studies from 2000 to 2022 with terms like “osteoarthritis,” “OA,” “animal models,” “ASU,” and “soy/avocado.” Two reviewers independently screened each article using inclusion and exclusion criteria and categorized the studies into in vitro, preclinical, and clinical groups. According to in vitro research, ASU affect the regulation of molecules related to OA, increasing structural elements like collagen and aggrecan and decreasing pro-inflammatory mediators. Although results vary, pre-clinical research in different animal models has demonstrated positive effects, such as ameliorating histopathological changes and reduced inflammation. Despite some discrepancies regarding structural changes in the joints, clinical trials typically demonstrate symptom relief and slow down the disease progression. While ASU demonstrates significant promise in alleviating OA symptoms and reducing reliance on NSAIDs, further research is essential to fully understand its mechanisms of action. More studies are needed to determine the precise pathways through which ASU exerts its effects and to establish the most effective dosages for its administration, either alone or in combination with other treatments.

BackgroundPsychotherapy for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), a condition characterized by an intense and persistent grief response, has received increased attention over the past decades. Evidence-based approaches to prevent PGD are currently scarce, and not always effective. This paper introduces a protocol for a clinical trial exploring the effectiveness of a Meaning Reconstruction psychotherapy approach (MR) assisted with ayahuasca, a traditional indigenous medicine.MethodThe outlined protocol is a three-arm, non-randomized controlled trial focused on reducing normal and pathological grief symptoms, comparing the effectiveness of Ayahuasca-assisted MR therapy (A-MR), MR therapy alone (MR) and No Treatment (NT). At least 69 people who lost a first-degree relative during the prior year, and with a Texas Revised Inventory of Grief score up 39 (TRIG ≥ 40), will participate in the trial. Participants will be allocated to an A-MR (n ≥ 23), MR (n ≥ 23) or NT (n ≥ 23) group. Those from the A-MR and MR therapy groups will undergo a therapeutic process involving 9 sessions of online psychotherapy. In addition, the A-MR condition involves 2 group sessions of ayahuasca. The primary outcomes will be normal and pathological grief severity as measured by the TRIG and Traumatic Grief Inventory Self-Report (TGI-SR), administered at baseline, post-treatment, and 3-month follow up. Measures of quality of life, post-traumatic growth, meaning-made, psychological flexibility, and self-belief consistency will be also included. In addition, subjective effects of ayahuasca and acceptance-avoidance promoting effects will be assessed following ayahuasca administration. El objetivo fue desarrollar y evaluar una herramienta de gamificación para promover hábitos saludables utilizando blockchain. Se realizó un estudio pre-experimental con una muestra de conveniencia en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte de la Universidad de Vigo, con 47 participantes sanos (36 hombres y 11 mujeres), de 21,5 ± 2,3 años. Se desarrolló un entorno de gamificación híbrido que combina tecnología blockchain y bases de datos tradicionales para fomentar hábitos saludables a través de retos, recompensando de forma automática y transparente al usuario. La herramienta, accesible mediante una interfaz web, busca mejorar la adopción de estas prácticas. El sistema fue evaluado utilizando la Escala de Usabilidad del Sistema, con el test Alpha de Cronbach aplicado para medir su fiabilidad. La herramienta obtuvo una puntuación de 78,09 ± 10,63 puntos, con un máximo de 97,5 y un mínimo de 47,5, situándola en la categoría “Buena” en la Escala de Usabilidad del Sistema, a la que se le aplicó el Alpha de Cronbach, mostrándose una consistencia interna aceptable con un valor de 0,77. Se ha desarrollado una plataforma que utiliza la gamificación para fomentar hábitos saludables, apoyada en tecnología blockchain. El prototipo recompensa los desafíos de salud completados y ha demostrado alta usabilidad. La plataforma aprovecha las ventajas del blockchain, como la transparencia y confiabilidad en los datos, sin necesidad de intermediarios. The objective was to develop and evaluate a gamification tool to promote healthy habits using blockchain technology. A pre-experimental study was conducted with a convenience sample at the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, University of Vigo, involving 47 healthy participants (36 men and 11 women), aged 21.5 ± 2.3 years. A hybrid gamification environment was developed, combining blockchain technology with traditional databases to foster healthy habits through challenges, rewarding users automatically and transparently. The tool, accessible through a web interface, aims to improve the adoption of these practices. The system was evaluated using the System Usability Scale, with the Alpha Cronbach test applied to measure its reliability. The tool scored 78.09 ± 10.63 points, with a maximum of 97.5 and a minimum of 47.5, placing it in the “Good” category on the System Usability Scale. The Cronbach's Alpha test showed an acceptable internal consistency, with a value of 0.77. A platform was developed using gamification to promote healthy habits, supported by blockchain technology. The prototype rewards completed health challenges and has demonstrated high usability. The platform takes advantage of blockchain's benefits, such as transparency and reliability in data handling, without the need for intermediaries. Additionally, it respects user privacy, improving the overall experience in practicing physical activities. Decentralized wastewater treatment systems are a potential solution to the water crisis. However, in addition to advanced technology, successful implementation of these systems requires broad public willingness to use them. This paper presents the results of a three-phase psychosocial intervention with the users of a business building where a decentralized wastewater treatment plant was installed. The intervention, motivated by complaints from users due to their lack of knowledge about the existence of the plant, aimed at understanding and improving users’ perceptions of the building’s decentralized system. In the first phase, we conducted a focus group with a sample of workers (n = 6) to understand their knowledge and perception of the building’s decentralized wastewater treatment system. Once the main obstacles and facilitators were identified, we designed a second phase where a group of employees (n = 46) were exposed to environmental priming to improve attitudes toward the decentralized plant installed in the building. Finally, in the third phase, a bidirectional informative session was proposed, conducted by experts, to another group of workers (n = 25). Findings suggest that implementing specific psychosocial strategies, such as promoting environmental awareness and providing informative sessions, along with incorporating potential users throughout the process, contributes to better acceptance of the decentralized wastewater treatment plant. This work presents a real case in a pilot plant that can serve as a guide for addressing psychosocial resistance in similar projects.

(1) Background: Increasing life expectancy allows for more age-related health issues. Enhancing physical, cognitive, mental, and social health is crucial. Promoting healthy habits combats stress and diseases. Recommendation systems, like collaborative filtering, tailor suggestions but face challenges. Techniques such as artificial intelligence and machine learning are vital. Personalized health recommendations improve lifestyles and mitigate issues. (2) Methods: A systematic review adhering to the general principles of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses was conducted with the aim of identifying articles on innovative research about using recommendation algorithms, machine learning, or artificial intelligence to promote healthy habits and active aging. (3) Results: A total of 34 articles were included in this work. They address the topic of recommendation systems that use machine learning or artificial intelligence in the promotion of healthy habits. (4) Conclusions: This article reviews health-related activity recommendation techniques for the general population. With rising life expectancy and common health issues, effective recommendations are crucial for future public health. Limitations include excluding simpler models. Despite many proposals, systematic adherence mechanisms are lacking. Developing traceable, verifiable systems for healthy activity recommendations is vital for aging populations in developed countries.

Purpose: To evaluate how Video Display Terminal (VDT) use, Contact Lens (CL) wear, and eyedrop use affect ocular surface parameters in participants with ocular discomfort and how these factors may vary across different age groups. Methods: The current cross-sectional study initially involved a total of 252 participants who completed a self-administered survey to collect information about ocular discomfort and lifestyle factors. This online survey was composed of an Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire and three extra questions regarding lifestyle factors (VDT use, CL wear, and eyedrop use). Only 185 symptomatic participants, those with OSDI values > 12, were scheduled to undergo a comprehensive ocular examination that included tear film osmolarity, Fluorescein Break-Up Time (FBUT), Maximum Blink Interval (MBI), and corneal staining. Results: Differences in ocular parameters and lifestyle factors across age groups (60 years) were analyzed, along with their correlations and regression. Significant age group differences were found in OSDI, osmolarity, FBUT, and MBI (One-way ANOVA, all p ≤ 0.029). Correlations were observed between CL wear and osmolarity and MBI (Pearson’s correlation, both p ≤ 0.049). Multiple regression confirmed age associations with OSDI, osmolarity, FBUT, and MBI (Multiple linear regression, all p ≤ 0.040) and found links between VDT use and osmolarity and MBI (Multiple linear regression, both p ≤ 0.038) and between eyedrop use and OSDI (Multiple linear regression, p = 0.040). Conclusion: Aging is a primary factor affecting ocular homeostasis, with older adults showing lower FBUT and MBI values and higher osmolarity. Prolonged use of VDTs exacerbates this effect, further contributing to ocular discomfort and destabilized tear film. No associations between CL wear and any of the ocular parameters were found. Eyedrop use shows varied effects on ocular comfort across age groups, emphasizing the need for age-specific ocular care. Overall, these findings confirm that aging and extended VDT use play a significant role in ocular surface discomfort.

People sometimes protest government corruption, yet our current understanding of why they do so is culturally constrained. Can we separate pancultural factors influencing people’s willingness to protest government corruption from factors culturally specific to each socioecological context? Surprisingly little cross-cultural data exist on this important question. To fill this gap, we performed a cross-cultural test of the Axiological-Identitary Collective Action Model (AICAM) regarding the intention to protest against corruption. As a collective action framework, AICAM integrates three classical antecedents of collective action (injustice, efficacy, identity) with axiological variables (ideology and morality). A total sample of 2,316 participants from six countries (Nigeria, Russia, India, Spain, United States, Germany) in a multilevel analysis of AICAM predictions showed that the positive relationship of the intention to protest corruption with moral obligation, system-based anger, and national identification can be considered pancultural. In contrast, the relationships between system justification and perceived efficacy are culturally specific. System justification negatively predicted the intention to participate only in countries with high levels of wealth, while perceived efficacy positively predicted it only in countries perceived as less corrupt. These findings highlight the importance of accounting features of socioecology and separating pancultural from culture-specific effects in understanding collective action.

(1) Background: In developed countries, public health faces a number of problems, including sedentary lifestyles and poor diets, which collectively contribute to the occurrence of preventable diseases. Noncommunicable diseases represent the leading cause of global mortality. Despite the promotion of healthy living, compliance remains a significant challenge. The integration of gamification into health apps has been demonstrated to facilitate behavioral change. Blockchain technology enhances the effectiveness of gamification by providing data trustability and support for auditable incentives. This feature is possible and easy due to the inherent characteristics of blockchain automating processes through Smart Contracts, rewarding participants and creating leaderboards in a transparent and reliable manner. The use of smart contracts and events enhances the traceability and reliability of decentralized applications, including healthcare. Interoperability in blockchain tools facilitates the deployment of complex environments. The aim of this research is the deployment of a tool for the implementation and testing of a gamification platform based on blockchain technology. (2) Methods: Pre-experimental research was carried out to assess the usability of the decentralized application developed. (3) Results: A decentralized application was developed with the objective of gamifying healthy habits. The application was evaluated using the System Usability Scale, obtaining a score of 80.49, and the Cronbach’s Alpha score, which was found to be 0.75. (4) Conclusions: A prototype of a decentralized application connected with a blockchain network to reward challenge fulfilment was deployed. Despite being in early development, it demonstrated high usability. Employing blockchain technology guarantees transparency and traceability while remaining in compliance with legal requirements like the General Data Protection Regulation.

Background: Dry eye disease (DED) is characterized by the loss of ocular surface homeostasis with specific signs and symptoms. Studying the progression of a multifactorial disease is exceedingly challenging for researchers because several factors can influence it. The present study aims to study changes in tear meniscus height (TMH), lipid layer pattern (LLP), and bulbar hyperemia over time in untreated DED participants. Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study included 73 participants (146 eyes) diagnosed with DED since at least 2013. Participants underwent new examinations between 2021 and 2023, grouped by 8-, 6-, or 4-year follow-up periods. TMH, LLP, and bulbar hyperemia were assessed in both examinations. No participant received pharmacological treatment for DED. Results: Differences in TMH, bulbar hyperemia, and LLP between sessions were obtained in the 8-year group (p ≤ 0.027). Differences in bulbar hyperemia and LLP between sessions were obtained in the 6-year group (p ≤ 0.022). The only differences in LLP between sessions were obtained in the 4-year group (p < 0.005). Conclusion: Changes in TMH were obtained after periods of eight years from the first eye examination. Also, changes in bulbar hyperemia were obtained at periods of 8 and 6 years; however, changes in LLP could be found from 4-year follow-ups.

The current research investigates whether moral obligation and perceived close vs. distant risks of high vs. moderate risk collective actions are associated with willingness to participate in collective action in the case of Turkey. Two studies were conducted: one with re-placed university students after the July 15, 2016 coup d'état attempt (high-risk context; N₁ = 258) and one with climate strikes (moderate risk context; N₂ = 162). The findings showed that moral obligation predicts collective action in both studies, however, the strength of this relationship is contingent on the level of subjective likelihood of protest risk in the high-risk collective action (Study 1), but not in the moderate-risk collective action (Study 2). Study 2 extended the findings of Study 1 by showing that higher perceived climate crisis risks (e.g., extinction of many species, destroying the vast majority of vital resources; distant risk), but not risks of protest (e.g., being arrested, blacklisted; close risk) predicts higher willingness to participate in collective action. We discussed the role of moral obligation and different risk perceptions (e.g., distant, close, moderate, high) on climate movements and collective action of marginalized groups in repressive political contexts.

Enmarcada en la orientación humanista-existencial, y con más de ochenta años de historia, la psicoterapia centrada en la persona continúa siendo uno de los principales sistemas de intervención psicológica. Las ideas de su principal creador, Carl R. Rogers, han sido claves en el desarrollo de la investigación y el ejercicio de la psicoterapia tal y como la conocemos en la actualidad, tanto dentro como fuera de las fronteras de la orientación. Tras una introducción a la teoría psicopatológica y psicoterapéutica que subyace al sistema, este artículo se centra tanto en los nuevos desarrollos dentro de la teoría rogeriana como en la investigación llevada a cabo hasta el momento sobre ella. Revisando algunos de los debates centrales en el ámbito, desde la perspectiva del siglo XXI, el artículo concluye con una reflexión sobre la situación actual del sistema.

La reexperimentación emocional (re) permite dar sentido a hechos traumáticos o estresantes mediante un proceso dirigi-do por instrucciones verbales o escritas, y por ello puede generar beneficios en el bienestar psicológico y la salud física autoinformada. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la comprensión de tres tipos de instrucciones experimentales (re tradicional, re con claves de aceptación y compromiso, y re psicosocial) y una instrucción para el grupo control (retrivial), mediante técnicas de validación cognitiva (pruebas centradas en el significado y verbalización de pensamiento) en personas expuestas a hechos de violencia política en Colombia. Para ello, se desarrolló un estudio de tipo cualitativo con corte instrumental, en el que se entrevistó a 42 colombianos víctimas de violencia política, en su mayoría mujeres, elegidos con un muestro por conveniencia. Las entrevistas fueron transcritas y codificadas mediante un análisis categorial mixto que tomó como referente procedimientos del Movimiento de Aspectos Cognitivos de la Metodología de Encuestas. Como resultado, los participantes comprendieron de manera diferencial las instrucciones dadas en cada protocolo, enfocándose en aspectos como el contexto sociopolítico en el caso del protocolo psicosocial, y en respuestas asociadas a la aceptación en el protocolo con claves de aceptación y compromiso. Se identificaron dificultades en la comprensión de algunas secciones de los protocolos, las cuales fueron ajustadas. Finalmente, se enfatiza la importancia de implementar técnicas de validación cognitiva para verificar la comprensión de instrucciones, protocolos o instrumentos, dado que el desempeño de los partici-pantes y la calidad de las medidas de las intervenciones pueden verse afectados por la comprensión e interpretación de las instrucciones propuestas.

Background: The aim of the present study was to establish a cut-off value of the Lipid Layer Pattern (LLP) between participants with different subtypes of Dry Eye Disease (DED) including Deficient Dry Eye (ADDE), Evaporative Dry Eye (EDE), and Mixed Dry Eye (MDE). Methods: 240 participants diagnosed with DED according to the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society in the Dry Eye Workshop II guidelines were included in the study. Tear Meniscus Height (TMH) using the Tearscope illumination and Meibomian Gland Loss Area (MGLA) using the Keratograph 5M were assessed to categorize the participants into an ADDE group, EDE group, or MDE group. Then, the LLP was assessed using the Tearscope following the Guillon (LLP-G) and Colour (LLP-C) schemes. Results: Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) showed that both LLP-G and LLP-C have no diagnostic potential in distinguishing between ADDE and EDE participants (both p ≥ 0.724). However, to differentiate the ADDE participants from the MDE, ROC procedures showed a good diagnostic potential with cut-off values of Closed Meshwork-Wave (AUC ± SD = 0.609 ± 0.049, p = 0.038, sensitivity: 23.9%; specificity: 76.1%) and Grey-White (AUC ± SD = 0.611 ± 0.050, p = 0.034, sensitivity: 40.7%; specificity: 73.9%) for LLP-G and LLP-C, respectively. Also, a significant potential to distinguish between the EDE from MDE participants was found, with cut-off values of Closed Meshwork (AUC ± SD = 0.604 ± 0.049, p = 0.043, sensitivity: 40.8%; specificity: 76.1%) and Grey-White (AUC ± SD = 0.604 ± 0.051, p = 0.038, sensitivity: 44.7%; specificity: 73.9%) for LLP-G and LLP-C, respectively. Conclusions: Using the Tearscope, both LLP-G and LLP-C has diagnostic potential to distinguish MDE participants from the other subtypes of DED. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on a single case of ayahuasca-assisted grief therapy for the prevention of complicated grief, conducted within a clinical trial. The participant, a woman in her thirties who lost her father to cancer, completed a 9-session process of Meaning Reconstruction Therapy (MRT) organised around two ayahuasca sessions. Following each psychedelic experience, she also completed a psychedelic integration session. The case study investigates the effect of the intervention, the observed changes in the participant, and the potential processes of change which may account for this improvement. The analysis relies on a qualitative narrative approach to examine the content of each therapy session, as well as on the psychometric measures completed at baseline, post-treatment, and at the three-month follow-up. These results are linked to emerging theories in the field, with a particular focus on the role of meaning reconstruction, psychological flexibility, and a continuing bond with the deceased. Political polarization on social media, particularly during electoral campaigns, has become a growing concern. This study aimed to assess levels of affective polarization in political communication, considering temporal orientation, delegitimizing beliefs, and intergroup emotions. Two studies were conducted: one during the Andalusian elections in Spain, and another during the Colombian presidential campaign. Tweets from candidates and X users were analyzed in both studies. Linguistic analysis was used to develop an index for measuring affective polarization in linguistic pieces. This index offers an alternative to the lack of linguistic measurement tools for psychological processes regarding political polarization. Findings showed that communicative strategies often exhibited high indicators of ingroup bias in contexts without political violence, resulting in lower polarization that increased with positive emotions and a forward‐looking perspective. Conversely, in contexts of political violence, strategies shifted towards outgroup discrimination and delegitimization. Positive emotions decreased polarization in these situations, while a past focus intensified it. The study concluded that affective polarization could indicate the willingness to pursue reconciliation in violent contexts. Consequently, this research provides a map of emotions associated with polarization. Public significance statement: Two studies conducted in Spain and Colombia analyzed how political figures and users of the social network X communicate during elections. It was identified that the use of emotions can contribute to political polarization in both populations. Purpose: To evaluate how Video Display Terminal (VDT) use, Contact Lens (CL) wear, and eyedrop use affect ocular surface parameters in participants with ocular discomfort and how these factors may vary across different age groups. Methods: The current cross-sectional study initially involved a total of 252 participants who completed a self-administered survey to collect information about ocular discomfort and lifestyle factors. This online survey was composed of an Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire and three extra questions regarding lifestyle factors (VDT use, CL wear, and eyedrop use). Only 185 symptomatic participants, those with OSDI values > 12, were scheduled to undergo a comprehensive ocular examination that included tear film osmolarity, Fluorescein Break-Up Time (FBUT), Maximum Blink Interval (MBI), and corneal staining. Results: Differences in ocular parameters and lifestyle factors across age groups (<40 years, 40–60 years, >60 years) were analyzed, along with their correlations and regression. Significant age group differences were found in OSDI, osmolarity, FBUT, and MBI (One-way ANOVA, all p ≤ 0.029). Correlations were observed between CL wear and osmolarity and MBI (Pearson's correlation, both p ≤ 0.049). Multiple regression confirmed age associations with OSDI, osmolarity, FBUT, and MBI (Multiple linear regression, all p ≤ 0.040) and found links between VDT use and osmolarity and MBI (Multiple linear regression, both p ≤ 0.038) and between eyedrop use and OSDI (Multiple linear regression, p = 0.040). Conclusion: Aging is a primary factor affecting ocular homeostasis, with older adults showing lower FBUT and MBI values and higher osmolarity. Prolonged use of VDTs exacerbates this effect, further contributing to ocular discomfort and destabilized tear film. No associations between CL wear and any of the ocular parameters were found. Eyedrop use shows varied effects on ocular comfort across age groups, emphasizing the need for age-specific ocular care. Bereaved people frequently report perceiving the continued presence of the person they lost in the form of a voice, a vision, a felt presence or any other sensory perception. This report explores this psychological phenomenon, experiences of presence, using narrative interviewing and analysis. Ten people were interviewed, in English or Spanish, using a biographical narrative procedure. The analysis, part of a project focused on unwelcome continued presences, was focused on the sources of distress, ambivalence and comfort reported in participant narratives on their experiences, as well as on the sociocultural processes influencing them. Identified properties were grouped into nine categories, with this report being primarily focused on sources related to distress, or ambivalence, and their relevance for clinical practice.

This article explores the similarities between humanistic (and existential) psychotherapy, represented here by the ideas of Viktor Frankl, Erich Fromm and Irvin Yalom, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Despite the ongoing dialogue between both therapies during the last decade, regarding both their convergences and divergences, there is a gap in the literature concerning their complementarity in clinical practice. This analysis addresses this gap with the integrative (or pluralistic) clinician in mind, and approximates a theoretical and practical integration anchored upon the transtheoretical model.

BackgroundLow adherence to healthy habits, which is associated with a higher risk of disease and death, among citizens of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries is a serious concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the physical activity (PA) guidelines for Americans provide recommendations on PA and healthy diets. To promote these habits, we suggest using a blockchain-based platform, using the PA Messaging Framework to deliver messages and rewards to users. Blockchain is a decentralized secure platform for data management, which can be used for value-added controls and services such as smart contracts (SCs), oracles, and decentralized applications (dApps). Of note, there is a substantial penetration of blockchain technologies in the field of PA, but there is a need for more implementations of dApps to take advantage of features such as nonfungible tokens. ObjectiveThis study aimed to create a comprehensive platform for promoting healthy habits, using scientific evidence and blockchain technology. The platform will use gamification to encourage healthy PA and eating habits; in addition, it will monitor the activities through noninvasive means, evaluate them using open-source software, and follow up through blockchain messages. MethodsA literature search was conducted on the use of blockchain technology in the field of PA and healthy eating. On the basis of the results of this search, it is possible to define an innovative platform for promoting and monitoring healthy habits through health-related challenges on a dApp. Contact with the user will be maintained through messages following a proposed model in the literature to improve adherence to the challenges. ResultsThe proposed strategy is based on a dApp that relies on blockchain technology. The challenges include PA and healthy eating habits based on the recommendations of the WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization. The system is constituted of a blockchain network where challenge-related achievements are stored and verified using SCs. The user interacts with the system through a dApp that runs on their local device, monitors the challenge, and self-authenticates by providing their public and private keys. The SC verifies challenge fulfillment and generates messages, and the information stored in the network can be used to encourage competition among participants. The ultimate goal is to create a habit of healthy activities through rewards and peer competition. ConclusionsThe use of blockchain technology has the potential to improve people’s quality of life through the development of relevant services. In this work, strategies using gamification and blockchain are proposed for monitoring healthy activities, with a focus on transparency and reward allocation. The results are promising, but compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation is still a concern. Personal data are stored on personal devices, whereas challenge data are recorded on the blockchain.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits. It is crucial to promote proper training and healthy habits for all to prevent physical and cognitive decline. This should be a priority in health and education initiatives to reduce deaths and noncommunicable diseases. Guidelines for nutrition, physical activity, and sleep emphasize the importance of healthy habits. The goal is to develop a recommendation tool with a diverse range of challenges to positively impact users’ health. Methods: The process involves thoroughly obtaining precise user profiles through widely used questionnaires such as the Short-Form Health survey, the short Healthy Eating Index, and the Oviedo Sleep Questionnaire, and characterizing the challenges. Then, an algorithm will be developed to identify and prioritize the most suitable challenges for each user, ensuring personalized recommendations. Results: A pool of 30 health challenges was created based on reputable recommendations and experts. The system underwent validation by external experts and received positive user feedback, confirming its effectiveness. The panel of experts and users validated the personalized and reliable recommendations. Conclusions: Simple lifestyle interventions have shown promise for primary prevention in developed countries. A prototype system has been created to evaluate the individual weakness of users and suggest evidence-based lifestyle challenges. The system conducts a thorough health assessment and ensures feasibility for preventive purposes. Validation has proven the system’s effectiveness in recommending health-enhancing challenges with no adverse effects. The design of the model supports the seamless addition of new challenges by eventual third parties, ensuring interoperability and scalability.

The dataset presented in this paper were collected for testing a perceptive-axiological model of recycled water acceptance for low and high contact uses. Participants were selected by proportional random sampling by sex and age the two Spanish communities with the most extreme values of water stress (Galicia, the rainiest region and Murcia, the driest). Data were collected by a company specialized in market research using an online survey housed on Qualtrics. Participants who matched the specified profile were contacted by email. The company compensated them financially. The final sample size consisted of 726 valid responses. The survey collected data on a variety of variables related to three conceptual dimensions: the diagnosis of the environmental situation, the axiological influence and the public perceptions regarding recycled water. The survey also collected demographic data from respondents. The survey was designed and reviewed by four experts in social psychology and two experts in methodology. The dataset featured in this article provides the raw survey data plus sociodemographic distribution, survey items, and other statistical data. This is the first and most comprehensive set of comparative data known to the authors on public acceptance of water reuse for high and low contact uses comparing regions with and without water scarcity. The authors have published an open access paper based on this data set, which are linked to this paper. Water industry professionals, policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders aiming to implement wastewater reuse systems in society may be interested in using the data as a point of comparison for their own study on public acceptance of water reuse or examining the data for relationships not yet explored in the literature.

Purpose: Inter-eye variability is a recognized characteristic of Dry Eye Disease (DED) and has been proposed as a diagnostic indicator in clinical practice. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic potential of the absolute difference between eyes in three key diagnostic tests recommended by the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop II (TFOS DEWS II) Diagnostic Methodology report: tear film osmolarity, Fluorescein Break-Up Time (FBUT), and ocular surface staining. Methods: A total of 180 participants were included in a cross-sectional study. Before a dry eye examination, participants completed an online self-administered OSDI questionnaire. The TFOS DEWS II diagnostic criteria for DED assessment were used: along with OSDI, osmolarity, FBUT and ocular surface staining were measured in all participants in both eyes following standardized methodology. Based on signs and symptoms, participants were diagnosed as having No DED or DED. After diagnosis, the parameters were computed as the right and left eyes' absolute inter-eye difference (|OD-OS|). Results: Receiver Operating Characteristics analyses for computed parameters were used based on the previous diagnosis. ROC analyses showed that Osmolarity|OD-OS| have a diagnostic capability to differentiate between No DED and DED participants with a cut-off value of 9.5 mOsm/L (AUC = 0.745 ± 0.052, p < 0.003), whereas FBUT|OD-OS| and Corneal Stainning|OD-OS| have not (AUC, both p ≥ 0.160). Conclusion: The present study found that the Osmolarity|OD-OS| parameter could be used as a diagnostic indicator for DED assessment, while the FBUT|OD-OS| and the Corneal Staining|OD-OS| parameters do not have this capability. In this article, we focus on two demonstrations against climate change that took place in Portugal on the 12th of November 2016 and the 29th of April 2017. Two separate studies were conducted on the same protests. In Study 1, we conducted a quantitative study (N = 259), to examine the role of socio-demographics and socio-psychological predictors in predicting the actual protest. Participants were demonstrators (N = 158), as well as non-demonstrators (N = 101). Results indicated that moral motivation and identification as an environmentalist were the key variables in explaining actual protest. In Study 2, we conducted a framing analysis of the written manifestos (N = 2), to identify the core framing tasks which were used to inspire and legitimize the protests. The framing analysis suggests that the problems and paths for action were described by appealing to the interlinkage between the global and local dimensions of climate change, and that arguments of severity and urgency of the problem were the most salient. The implications of this research are discussed in relation to possible pathways for a more comprehensive understanding of the reasons why people engage in collective action in climate change related issues, and how these motives may relate to how social movements mobilize people for action.
