The Kedougou Kenieba Inlier (KKI) (Paleoproterozoic of Eastern Senegal) is a portion of the West African Craton (WAC) containing a granite-greenstone terrain that experienced three distinct periods of magmatic activity, peaking at 2200, 2160–2130 and 2100–2070 Ma. In the Inlier, Paleoproterozoic granitoids and large-scale transcurrent shear zones are spatially associated, suggesting a genetic link between magma bodies and shear zones. Granitic intrusions are associated with all the volcanic episodes and phases of deformation, and have been used to constrain the age of many of these events. Our structural data and deformation sequence indicate that the Mako Greenstone Belt and the adjacent granitoid complexes have undergone a multi-phase evolutionary history that is spread over a prolonged period. The available geochronological data and field studies allowed classification of the granitoids of the KKI into four generations GI, GII, GIII and GIV. The current data suggest that the oldest rocks in the KKI, the Badon granites (2198 ± 2 Ma) and the tonalitic gneisses from Tonkouto (2200–2198 Ma) (GI), could be correlated with an early Birimian magmatic event. The gneisses, crystallized at depth, record the earliest deformation and in contrast to other tonalites, do not appear to have intruded volcanic rocks. The second manifestation of magmatism was intrusion of mafic diorite – the Gabbro Sandikounda Layered Igneous Complex type (GII) and development of the Laminia Kaourou Plutonic Complex (LKPC) (2160–2130 Ma). These bodies pre-date or are sometimes synchronous with a major deformational episode, and may, therefore, have formed very early in convergent Birimian orogenesis. The third major peak of magmatic activity occurred after the above major episode with the development of the oval shaped Diombalou and Bouroumbourou plutons (GIII). The orientation of these plutons parallel to the regional strike of the schistosity indicates structural control on granite emplacement. Eburnean magmatism was terminated in the Mako Belt following compressional Eburnean deformation, with the emplacement of the Tinkoto, Mamakono plutons (GIV) in the east of the complex and continued in the Diale–Dalema supergroup with the syntectonic emplacement of the Saraya batholith. Garnitiferous granites of crustal derivation were emplaced in the final period of extensional activity around 2080 Ma. Field observations suggest the early plutons of the complex granitic (Kakadian) batholith intruded during convergent deformation whereas later igneous activity accompanied regional orogen-parallel extension, followed by exhumation. In the Mako Belt, thickening of the crust was proposed to have caused heating and the ‘apparent diapiric rise’ of the Diombalou and Bouroumbourou plutons.

The Paleoproterozoic rocks in the Kedougou Kenieba Inlier (KKI) consist of volcanic and volcanosedimentary rocks intruded by granitoids with a wide compositional spectrum. Geochronological data based on single-grain zircon Pb-Pb evaporation, U-Pb single grain, Ar-Ar and K-Ar dating of several plutons point to a long lasting emplacement history in the KKI. The zircon data presented here yielded Paleoproterozoic ages for the emplacement/crystallization of the Badon granodiorite (2213 ± 3 to 2198 ± 2 Ma), tonalitic gneiss from Sandikounda (2194 ± 4 Ma), the Tinkoto pluton (2074 ± 9 Ma) as well as for the felsic host rocks of the Mamakono pluton (2067 ± 12Ma). The Badon granodiorite, formerly regarded to be relatively young and post-tectonic, is substantially older than all other known KKI intrusions. As a consequence, this new age may constrain the ongoing discussion on the existence of an Early Birimian cycle in the West African Craton (WAC). Ar-Ar and K-Ar ages on hornblende (2112 ± 12 and 2118 ± 31 Ma, respectively, in the tonalitic gneiss from Sandikounda) and biotite (2098 ± 26 and 2090 ± 21 Ma, respectively, in the Badon granodiorite) define an age of ca 2090 Ma, which is interpreted to mark the major tectonomagmatic episode in this part of the WAC. This is confirmed by the Paleoproterozoic ages of the Saraya, Tinkoto and Mamakono granite. A hydrothermal event at 2020 Ma followed the emplacement of the granitoids and caused the alteration of the Saraya granite. The new zircon ages, reflecting the magmatic and tectonothermal events in the study area correlate well with various magmatic and metamorphic events elsewhere in West Africa.

Birimian (Paleoproterozoic) granitoids and associated volcanic and sedimentary rocks from the Kedougou-Kenieba-Inlier (KKI) of Eastern Senegal have been analyzed for their major, trace, REE concentrations and their Sr-Nd isotopic compositions. The calc-alkaline I-type granitoids were previously divided into several structural groups. The new geochemical data, however, do not give evidence for this subdivision into pre-, syn- and post-deformational intrusions. The results demonstrate the juvenile character of the granitic igneous rock suite and its isotopic similarities to the adjacent volcanic Mako and sedimentary Diale-Dalema Supergroups. The Birimian rocks show uniform juvenile features such as low initial Sr isotopic composition (~0.700 to ~0.704), positive ∑Nd(t) values (2.1 to 4.3) and restricted Nd model ages (~2.0 to ~2.3 Ga). They preclude the contamination of the juvenile Birimian crust of the KKI by notable amounts of reworked Archean crustal material. Comparison with existing data helps to clarify the complex evolution of Birimian Supergroups of the WAC. It can be concluded that the Birimian rocks are the product of a large-scale crustal growth process with large amounts of juvenile crust formed from the depleted mantle in a geodynamic environment compared to modern volcanic arcs. These bimodal volcanic arcs were later accreted to the WAC.

The Sierra de San Luis constitutes the southernmost tip of the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas. Its Palaeozoic metamorphic basement units define a key location for the understanding of the accretional history along the proto-Andean margin of Gondwana. Although, it is largely accepted that the polyphase accretional history of the Sierras Pampeanas is preluded by the docking of the Pampean Terrane followed by the Famatinian Orogenic Cycle that involves subduction along the margin of Gondwana and the accretion of the Precordillera (Cuyania) Terrane and finally ceased with the collision of the Chilenia terrane, a vast amount of controversial information concerning the timing and mode of collisions as well as the origin of the different involved crustal fragments within the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas is published. In this paper, those different hypothesis are presented and evaluated under the light of new isotopic data of the Sierra de San Luis. Nd-systematics of the metasedimentary sequences of the Sierra de San Luis indicate that the studied sequences were developed on the Pampean Terrane. An Amazonian origin of the Pampean Terrane that was probably detached from the Arequipa Antofalla Craton is proposed. Furthermore, the correlation of two low-grade phyllitic belts (San Luis Formation) with the widespread Puncoviscana Formation is not supported by Sm-Nd data. It is suggested that the sedimentary precursors of the Pringles Metamorphic Complex and the topping phyllites were sourced on the Pampean Orogen and accommodated in a newly formed back arc basin during the early Famatinian. The cooling history of the basement complex is recorded by an extensive amount of K-Ar muscovite and biotite ages. A high variability in muscovite ages is only partly related to different intrusion times of two pegmatoid generations. Post Famatinian to Achalian crustal scale mylonite formation (-359 Ma) and a rotational exhumation of the central basement unit are causal for the observed K-Ar muscovite age pattern in the range from 395 Ma to 447 Ma. Therefore, the decrease in metamorphic degree from west to east is the result of the erosion level of a crustal profile from the mid lower crust to the upper crust. An even higher variability in K-Ar biotite cooling ages covering the range from 315 Ma to 418 Ma is related to the slow cooling after the Famatinian Orogenic Cycle or reheating during the Achalian Orogenic Cycle and consequent variable reset of the isotopic system. However, ages recorded by biotite booklets substantiate the hypothesis of a differential exhumation of the basement of the Sierra de San Luis.

In the Austroalpine Basement to the south of the Tauern Window, distinct suites of metabasites occur with orthogneisses in pre-Early-Ordovician units. Tholeiitic and alkaline within-plate basalt-type metabasites are associated with acid meta-porphyroids in the post-Early-Ordovician Thurntaler Phyllite Group. According to their correlated trace element abundances, metabasite zircons crystallized with their host rocks. Protolith Pb–Pb zircon ages, whole-rock Ta/Yb–Th/Yb and oxygen, Sr, Nd isotope data define two principal evolution lines. An older evolution at elevated Th/Yb typical of subduction-related magmatism, started by 590-Ma N-MORB-type and 550–530 Ma volcanic arc basalt type basic suites, which mainly involved depleted mantle sources. It finished with mainly crustal-source 470–450-Ma acid magmatites. An other evolution line by tholeiitic and 430-Ma alkaline within-plate basalt-type suites in both pre- and post-Early-Ordovician units is characterized by an intraplate mantle metasomatism and enrichment trend along multicomponent sources. These magmatic evolution lines can be related to a plate tectonic scenario that involved terranes in a progressively mature Neoproterozoic to Ordovician active margin, and a subsequent Palaeo-Tethys passive margin along the north Gondwanan periphery.

Fluids and sediments from Deep Sea Drilling Project/Ocean Drilling Program Legs (56, 57, 87 and 186) along a transect extending from the subducting plate, across the midslope and upper slope of the Japan Trench forearc were analyzed for B and B isotopes in order to assess their composition and fluid–sediment interaction. At the reference Site 436 on the subducting plate, changes in B contents and B isotopes are controlled by the lithology and diagenesis only. The midslope Sites 440 and 584 showed stronger variations in the B geochemistry, which can be related to diagenesis and tectonic dewatering along faults. The strongest changes in the B geochemistry were observed on the upper slope Sites 1150 and 1151, where profound down-hole freshening (chlorinities as low as ∼310 mmol) coincides with a B enrichment (up to 9.3 × seawater concentration). The B isotope pore fluid profile of Site 1150 displayed a bimodal variation with depth, first increasing to values more positive than seawater, then shifting to lower signatures typical for deep-seated fluids, whereas Site 1151 showed a constant B decrease with depth. Sites 1150 and 1151 sediments showed B increases with depth to values as high as ∼164 p.p.m. and isotopic compositions ranging from ∼+4 to −9‰. A linear decrease in Bsolid/Bfluid ratio, suggests that B geochemistry of the upper slope sites is controlled by fluid–rock interaction and deep-seated fluid flow, whereas constant Bsolid/Bfluid ratios were observed at the reference site on the incoming plate. This fluid overprint is probably caused by normal faults in the sediment cover which might be interconnected to deep thrusts in the underlying Cretaceous accreted wedge. This suggests that the erosive Japan Trench margin is characterized by back-flux of deep-seated, B-enriched fluids into the ocean, which is facilitated by extensional normal faulting as a result of tectonic erosion and subsidence.

Lenses of spessartine quartzites (coticules) are associated with greenschist intercalations in coastal exposures at Bahia Mansa within the mainly metapsammopelitic Western Series, which forms most of the basement in the Coastal Cordillera of central to southern Chile. The chemical compositions of the coticules can be explained by protoliths formed from ferriferous and manganiferous hydrothermal precipitates mixed with aluminous alteration-derived material on top of oceanic crust. The peak conditions of metamorphism were calculated with multivariant reactions: 270–370 °C, 6–8 kbar. A retrograde P–T evolution was marked by decompression to 2 kbar during cooling below 300°C, influx of an external fluid, and strain-free crystallization of retrograde phases. The appearance of “ferriwinchite”, “ferribarroisite” and phengite in coticules and surrounding metabasic roc ks marks the transition from greenschist to epidote blueschist facies. Oscillatory zoning in garnet within the coticules as well a s in epidote and tourmaline in the metabasic rocks seems to be governed by the local chemical environment during prograde growth of minerals. Although the garnet in the coticules formed by a continuous prograde dehydration–decarbonation reaction, the primary fluid inclusions are predominantly hydrous owing to massive influx of fluid during the early stage of decompression. Th e late stage of decompression is bracketed by isochores of primary fluid inclusions that are clearly below peak conditions of metamorphism. This is attributed to a volume increase of the fluid inclusions and stretching of the host minerals during decompression. Higher densities of fluid inclusions in garnet compared to those in quartz are due to differences in yield stren gth between the two minerals. The transient metamorphic gradient of approximately 12 °C/km revealed by the coticules and adjacent metabasic rocks of oceanic origin suggest slow subduction. Penetrative ductile deformation is mainly restricted to the late pro grade and early retrograde P–T path within an accretionary prism.
