International audience; Compared to green spaces, the ecological value of built elements has been largely ignored despite representing the main land cover in cities. In streets, pavements are linear built elements which are omnipresent in all neighborhood types and which extend over large cumulative areas in cities. We assessed the capacity of pavements to promote spontaneous flora and investigated the drivers of pavement plant assemblages. Based on a plant survey along 48 km of pavements in a French city which no longer uses pesticides, we examined the relative importance of multi-scale factors (i.e. landscape context, pavement characteristics and frequency of manual weeding) on different aspects of pavement plant communities including total plant cover, species richness and beta-diversity. More than 300 species were recorded. Plant assemblages were mainly determined by the pavement type, plant cover and species richness being much higher on sandy than on asphalt pavements. There were marked differences in species composition between pavement types with many more species associated with sandy than with asphalt pavements. We found a higher species richness and plant cover on pavements located in commercial and industrial areas than in residential neighborhoods. The effects of weeding frequency and the presence of green space around pavements were marginally important. We demonstrate that pavements with a high level of permeability play a major role in promoting urban biodiversity which should be taken into account by urban planners. We recommend that ecologists work with civil engineers and landscape architects to develop new urban ecological designs. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Urbanisation leads to natural habitats being fragmented with various effects according to the species and their ecological characteristics. Paradoxically, the urbanisation process creates relatively unused environments, wastelands, habitats which could contribute to biodiversity conservation in urban regions. In this review we examined the role of wastelands in maintaining biodiversity in the city and assessed the different factors responsible for wasteland biodiversity. 37 articles were suitable for our aim. Most of the studies have been conducted in large cities in Western and Central Europe. A wasteland is defined as an abandoned site with spontaneous vegetation (i.e. wild grown vegetation). In most cases, wastelands harbour more species than other urban green spaces. The processes which affect the biodiversity of wastelands operate on two different levels. Locally, the area size, age, soil, microclimate and the vegetation structure are the dominant factors. As in other environments, the species richness increases with the size of the wasteland. Wastelands of different ages include different stages of vegetation, ranging from pioneer to pre-forest stages, and consequently harbour different communities of plants and animals. The diversity of anthropogenic soil substrates leads to different plant communities. At the landscape scale, matrix composition and geographic connectivity between wastelands influence the biodiversity of wastelands, although to a lesser extent than the local features. We show that wastelands have a real potential to contribute to biodiversity conservation in urban regions. At the city scale, they represent habitats which urban planners need to take into account and include in dynamic urban planning.

Plasmodesmata are intercellular organelles in plants that establish cytoplasmic continuity between neighboring cells. Microinjection studies showed that plasmodesmata facilitate the cell-to-cell transport of a plant-encoded transcription factor, KNOTTED1 (KN1). KN1 can also mediate the selective plasmodesmal trafficking of kn1 sense RNA. The emerging picture of plant development suggests that cell fate is determined at least in part by supracellular controls responding to cellular position as well as lineage. One of the mechanisms that enables the necessary intercellular communication appears to involve transfer of informational molecules (proteins and RNA) through plasmodesmata.

Immunocytochemical techniques were employed to study the spatial distribution of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase within various cell types of the young reactive primary pulvinus ofMimosa pudica L. These cells were interconnected by large numbers of plasmodesmata, being concentrated within pit-fields. Although we could routinely detect evidence of the H+-ATPase along the plasma membrane, immunolabelling was rarely, if ever, observed along the plasma membranes of the plasmodesmata. This finding is discussed with respect to the likely specialized supramolecular structure of the plasmodesma.

Plasma membrane H+-ATPase was immunolocalized in several cell types of the sensitive plant Mimosa pudica L., and transmembrane potentials were measured on cortical cells. In comparison with the nonspecialized cortical cells of the petiole or stem, the proton pump was highly expressed in motor cells. These immunological data are in close agreement with electrophysiological data, because the active component of the transmembrane potential was low in the nonspecialized cortical cells and high in motor cells. Therefore, motor cells contain the plasma membrane H+-ATPase required to mediate the ionic fluxes that are involved in circadian leaf movements and that are necessary to recover the turgor potential that is considerably affected by the large K+ and Cl- efflux associated with seismonastic movement. With the exception of sieve tubes, the phloem also had a high density of H+-ATPase. This suggests that the recovery of the transmembrane ionic gradients (K+ and Cl-), which is affected by various stimuli, is more energized by the companion and parenchyma cells than by the sieve elements. In addition, at the phloem/cortex interface collocytes displayed the required properties for lateral transduction of the action potential toward the pulvinal motor cells.

The mature petiole of celery is an organ with versatile sink/source capacities where sucrose and mannitol are unloaded from and reloaded into the phloem cells. Plasma-membrane vesicles were purified by twophase partitioning either from phloem strands isolated from mature petioles of celery (Apium graveolens L.) or from mature petioles devoid of vascular bundles. Both types of vesicle were comparable in purity (more than 86% of plasma-membrane origin), size (135 nm diameter) and orientation (72% right-side-out). Plasma-membrane vesicles from phloem tissues had a higher vanadate-sensitive ATPase activity than plasma-membrane vesicles from petioles. Plasma-membrane vesicles from phloem tissues accumulated mannitol and sucrose in response to an artificial proton-motive force, in agreement with the existence of proton/substrate carriers. Plasma-membrane vesicles from petioles devoid of vascular bundles accumulated only mannitol following application of an artificial proton-motive force. The data suggest the volvement of apoplasmic transport events. The pathway for sucrose uptake in storage parenchyma cells is discussed in the light of the available physiological data.
