Purpose: To evaluate the short-term effects of inferior oblique myectomy on the retinal neurovasculature, choroidal thickness, and choroidal vascularity index at the macula. Methods: Patients older than 5 years who were candidates for inferior oblique muscle myectomy surgery participated in the study. Patients with any systemic or ocular disease that could affect the macular neurovasculature were not included in the study. After recording demographic data, including age and gender, and conducting a complete ophthalmic examination, macular optical coherence tomography (OCT), enhanced depth imaging OCT, and OCT angiography imaging (AngioVue software (V.2017.1.0.151; Optovue, Inc) were performed before (1 day to 1 week) and in the specific time intervals (1 week, 1 month, and 3 months) after the surgery for all participants. Results: Eighteen patients (13 male and 5 female) who underwent inferior oblique muscle myectomy, with a mean ± standard deviation age of 24.22 ± 18.14 years, were included in this study. The baseline mean ± standard deviation of subfoveal choroidal luminal area and subfoveal total choroidal area were 0.390 ± 0.03 and 0.539 ± 0.04 mm2, respectively. The changing pattern of the subfoveal choroidal vascularity index and subfoveal choroidal luminal area was statistically significant (P =.013 and.035, respectively). Conclusions: Inferior oblique myectomy can lead to changes in choroid hemodynamics in the short term. However, these changes seem to be temporary. Purpose: To investigate prevalence of strabismus and related factors in Mashhad, Iran. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Khatam-al-Anbia Hospital affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Methods: Using multistage cluster sampling, participants were selected. All participants underwent detailed ocular examinations. A unilateral cover test was performed with the prism bar to achieve binocular alignment. Deviation magnitude was determined by considering the best refractive correction. Fixation targets were chosen as single letters one line above the best-corrected visual acuity on the distance and near chart. Results: This study included 5054 participants with a mean age of 35.35±19.4 years. Strabismus was detected in 110 participants (2.17%) including 26 (0.51%) with esodeviation, 74 (1.46%) with exodeviation and 10 (0.19%) with vertical deviation. The prevalence rates for strabismus, exotropia and esotropia were 2.38%, 1.64%, and 0.56% in females and 2.00%, 1.31%, and 0.51% in males respectively. The results did not indicate a significant gender difference in terms of strabismus prevalence (p>0.05). Among the deviated eyes, there were 25.5% with hyperopia, 39.1% with myopia and 35.5% with emmetropia. Anisometropia and amblyopia rates were 2.79% and 2.55%, respectively. The results did not reveal a significant correlation between strabismus prevalence, exotropia and esotropia and age (p=0.56). The familial strabismus prevalence was 5.45%. Conclusion: Exotropia was more prevalent form of strabismus. Myopia was the dominant refractive error associated with deviated eyes. Tropia showed no age-related association. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pterygium is a common disease of the eye affected by environmental factors, especially climatic parameters. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of climatic factors on pterygium in the cities of Mashhad and Zahedan in Iran eastern half. Methods: The data of 130,464 patients referred to Zahedan Alzahra Ophthalmology Clinic (from them, 28,776 patients with pterygium) and 974,542 patients referred to Mashhad Khatam ol-Anbia Ophthalmology Clinic (from them, 20,222 patients with pterygium) during 2006-2011 were used. Climatic data elements including sunshine hours, dusty days, wind speed, ultraviolet and total sunshine index, maximum and minimum temperature, and humidity for two stations in Zahedan and Mashhad were obtained from the Iran Meteorological Organization. To study and compare the relationship of climatic factors and pterygium, correlation model, to analyze time delays, autocorrelation functions (ACF) and partial and autocorrelation functions (PACF), to assess seasonal differences in prevalence of pterygium model, ANOVA test, and to compare the prevalence of pterygium among patients in both two cities, independent sample t-test were used. Findings: In Zahedan, dusty days, sunshine hours, wind speed indicator, and ultraviolet and total sunshine indexes were the most effective factors on the prevalence of pterygium, respectively; while in Mashhad, wind speed, dusty days, and ultraviolet index were the most effective factors, respectively. ANOVA test showed no significant differences in terms of prevalence in different seasons. The t-test results showed that the prevalence of eye disease among patients in Zahedan was more than the city of Mashhad significantly. There was delay time in influencing the prevalence of pterygium by seasonal climate elements. Conclusion: In general, the incidence of pterygium was higher in Zahedan than Mashhad. It seems that the role of climatic factors in the incidence and severity of pterygium is more notable in Zahedan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
