Fire is a major agent involved in landscape transformation and an indirect cause of changes in species composition. Responses to fire may vary greatly depending on life histories and functional traits of species. We have examined the taxonomic and functional responses to fire of eight taxonomic animal groups displaying a gradient of dietary and mobility patterns: Gastropoda, Heteroptera, Formicidae, Coleoptera, Araneae, Orthoptera, Reptilia and Aves. The fieldwork was conducted in a Mediterranean protected area on 3 sites (one unburnt and two burnt with different postfire management practices) with five replicates per site. We collected information from 4606 specimens from 274 animal species. Similarity in species composition and abundance between areas was measured by the Bray-Curtis index and ANOSIM, and comparisons between animal and plant responses by Mantel tests. We analyze whether groups with the highest percentage of omnivorous species, these species being more generalist in their dietary habits, show weak responses to fire (i.e. more similarity between burnt and unburnt areas), and independent responses to changes in vegetation. We also explore how mobility, i.e. dispersal ability, influences responses to fire. Our results demonstrate that differences in species composition and abundance between burnt and unburnt areas differed among groups. We found a tendency towards presenting lower differences between areas for groups with higher percentages of omnivorous species. Moreover, taxa with a higher percentage of omnivorous species had significantly more independent responses of changes in vegetation. High- (e.g. Aves) and low-mobility (e.g. Gastropoda) groups had the strongest responses to fire (higher R scores of the ANOSIM); however, we failed to find a significant general pattern with all the groups according to their mobility. Our results partially support the idea that functional traits underlie the response of organisms to environmental changes caused by fire. Riparian zones play a fundamental role in regulating the amount of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) that is exported from catchments. However, C and N removal via soil gaseous pathways can influence local budgets of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to climate change. Over a year, we quantified soil effluxes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) from a Mediterranean riparian forest in order to understand the role of these ecosystems on catchment GHG emissions. In addition, we evaluated the main soil microbial processes that produce GHG (mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification) and how changes in soil properties can modify the GHG production over time and space. Riparian soils emitted larger amounts of CO₂ (1.2-10 g C m⁻² d⁻¹) than N₂O (0.001-0.2 mg N m⁻² d⁻¹) to the atmosphere attributed to high respiration and low denitrification rates. Both CO₂ and N₂O emissions showed a marked (but antagonistic) spatial gradient as a result of variations in soil water content across the riparian zone. Deep groundwater tables fueled large soil CO₂ effluxes near the hillslope, while N2O emissions were higher in the wet zones adjacent to the stream channel. However, both CO₂ and N₂O emissions peaked after spring rewetting events, when optimal conditions of soil water content, temperature, and N availability favor microbial respiration, nitrification, and denitrification. Overall, our results highlight the role of water availability on riparian soil biogeochemistry and GHG emissions and suggest that climate change alterations in hydrologic regimes can affect the microbial processes that produce GHG as well as the contribution of these systems to regional and global biogeochemical cycles.

Estudiar el cambio global de origen antropogénico en los ecosistemas mundiales, y sus efectos sobre los mismos, es y será uno de los principales retos de la ecología del siglo XXI. Los ecosistemas forestales españoles ya se encuentran actualmente limitados por el estrés hídrico. Esta limitación se verá agravada por los efectos del cambio climático debido tanto a una reducción del agua disponible como a un incremento de la demanda evaporativa. Una gestión forestal adecuada puede incrementar la resiliencia de los ecosistemas forestales mediterráneos al cambio climático. Los modelos de procesos ecofisiológicos como GOTILWA+ son herramientas muy potentes a la hora de proyectar los efectos del cambio climático sobre los ecosistemas forestales, asimismo como evaluar la gestión forestal. GOTILWA+ incluye un potente motor de optimización de la gestión forestal basado en el "Particle Swarm Algorithm" (PSO) -, que permite proyectar la gestión óptima en función de las variables ambientales tanto climáticas como estructurales y de los objetivos de gestión. Una gestión adaptativa al cambio climático será imprescindible para combatir los impactos negativos de este sobre los bosques españoles. En este artículo se presentan tres ejemplos de aplicación del modelo GOTILWA+: en el primero se estudia la respuesta de los hayedos (Fagus sylvatica L.) españoles a distintos escenarios de cambio climático. En el segundo se evalúan distintos itinerarios de gestión de pino carrasco (Pinus halepensis Mill.) en función de distintos objetivos de gestión. En el tercero, se aplica el PSO en un rodal de pino silvestre (Pinus sylvestris L.) para obtener la gestión óptima del rodal. Se concluye que, si bien el cambio climático supondrá severas constricciones sobre los ecosistemas forestales españoles, una gestión adaptativa permitirá en parte mitigar dichos impactos [...].

Assessing the potential future of current forest stands is a key to design conservation strategies and understanding potential future impacts to ecosystem service supplies. This is particularly true in the Mediterranean basin, where important future climatic changes are expected. Here, we assess and compare two commonly used modeling approaches (niche- and process-based models) to project the future of current stands of three forest species with contrasting distributions, using regionalized climate for continental Spain. Results highlight variability in model ability to estimate current distributions, and the inherent large uncertainty involved in making projections into the future. CO2 fertilization through projected increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations is shown to increase forest productivity in the mechanistic process-based model (despite increased drought stress) by up to three times that of the non-CO2 fertilization scenario by the period 2050-2080, which is in stark contrast to projections of reduced habitat suitability from the niche-based models by the same period. This highlights the importance of introducing aspects of plant biogeochemistry into current niche-based models for a realistic projection of future species distributions. We conclude that the future of current Mediterranean forest stands is highly uncertain and suggest that a new synergy between niche- and process-based models is urgently needed in order to improve our predictive ability.

Water stress is a defining characteristic of Mediterranean ecosystems, and is likely to become more severe in the coming decades. Simulation models are key tools for making predictions, but our current understanding of how soil moisture controls ecosystem functioning is not sufficient to adequately constrain parameterisations. Canopy-scale flux data from four forest ecosystems with Mediterranean-type climates were used in order to analyse the physiological controls on carbon and water flues through the year. Significant non-stomatal limitations on photosynthesis were detected, along with lesser changes in the conductance-assimilation relationship. New model parameterisations were derived and implemented in two contrasting modelling approaches. The effectiveness of two models, one a dynamic global vegetation model ("ORCHIDEE"), and the other a forest growth model particularly developed for Mediterranean simulations ("GOTILWA+"), was assessed and modelled canopy responses to seasonal changes in soil moisture were analysed in comparison with in situ flux measurements. In contrast to commonly held assumptions, we find that changing the ratio of conductance to assimilation under natural, seasonally-developing, soil moisture stress is not sufficient to reproduce forest canopy CO₂ and water fluxes. However, accurate predictions of both CO₂ and water fluxes under all soil moisture levels encountered in the field are obtained if photosynthetic capacity is assumed to vary with soil moisture. This new parameterisation has important consequences for simulated responses of carbon and water fluxes to seasonal soil moisture stress, and should greatly improve our ability to anticipate future impacts of climate changes on the functioning of ecosystems in Mediterranean-type climates.

Semiarid environments throughout the world have lost a major part of their woody vegetation and biodiversity due to the effects of wood cutting, cattle grazing and subsistence agriculture. The resulting state is typically used for cattle production, but the productivity of these systems is often very low, and erosion of the unprotected soil is a common problem. Such dry-land degradation is of great international concern, not only because the resulting state is hardly productive but also because it paves the way to desertification. The natural distribution of the genus Prosopis includes arid and semiarid zones of the Americas, Africa and Asia, but the majority of the Prosopis species are, however, native to the Americas. In order to assess a likely gradient in the response of tree species to precipitation, temperature and their connection to El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) events, two Prosopis species were chosen along a latitudinal gradient in Latin America, from northern Peru to central Chile: Prosopis pallida from a semi-arid land in northern and southern Peru and P. chilensis from a semiarid land in central Chile. Growth rings of each species were crossdated at each sampling site using classical dendrochronological techniques. Chronologies were related with instrumental climatic records in each site, as well as with SOI and N34 series. Cross-correlation, spectral and wavelet analysis techniques were used to assess the relation of growth with precipitation and temperature. Despite the long distance among sites, the two Prosopis species presented similar responses. Thus, the two species' growth is positively correlated to precipitation, while with temperature it is not. In northern Peru, precipitation and growth of P. pallida present a similar cyclic pattern, with a period of around 3 years. On the other hand, P. pallida in southern Peru, and P. chilensis also present this cyclic pattern, but also another one with lower frequency, coinciding with the pattern of precipitation. Both cycles are within the range of the ENSO band.

L'objectiu general d'aquesta tesi queda emmarcat dins del coneixement del bosc mediterrani i en concret de l'alzinar. El que s'ha pretés és analitzar en el cas de l'alzina (Quercus ilex L.). 1) Com la disponibilitat d'aigua i nutrients es relacionen amb les característiques estructurals i el contingut de nutrients que composen la capçada. 2) Quins patrons temporals de variació presenten. 3) Com aquests patrons temporals es poden relacionar amb la utilització dels nutrients, la seva reabsorció o retranslocament i l'eficiència en el seu ús. Aquestes análisis s'han fet sota diferents situacions de dísponibilitat d'aigua i nutrients.1r. cas. Seguiment a la part alta (coster) i baixa (vall) de la conca de L'Avic Entre aquests dos extrems es troba un gradient de disponibilitat dins del qual la vall reb menys radiació, té sols més profimds i, a més de la pluja, reb aports laterals d'aigua per drenatge de les parts més altes de la conca. També s'han analitzat quines diferències apareixen en el perfil vertical de les capçades i s'ha seguit en diferents moments de l'any. La massa de nutrient per unitat de superfície de fulla és diferent entre el coster i la vall reflectint les diferéncies de disponibilitat entre la part alta o coster i la baixa o vall. A la vall s'ha trobat més massa de nitrògen i de magnesi per unitat de superfície de fulla. Això es pot associar a una més alta capacitat fotosintètica en aquest lloc, que estimula un bosc menys dens i més alt quan es compara amb el coster. En canvi, s'ha trobat més massa i concentració de potassi al coster que a la vall, fet que pot estar relacionat amb un major control estomatic al coster que a la vall. El contingut de nutrients a les fulles al llarg del perfil vertical a la capçada aixi com la seva reabsorció decreixent des de la part alta a la part baixa de la capçada. Les fulles de la part inferior de la capçada tenen més restringit el magatzem de nutrients que poden ser reutilitzats. Les variacions en la massa de nitrogen i fòsfor per unitat de superfície de fulla posen en evidència processos de descarrega de nitrogen i fòsfor abans de l'estiu, i nova càrrega d'aquests nutrients en els períodes de menys producció. Les variacions de massa de nitrogen i fòsfor a les fulles vives van ser més grans a la vall. La reabsorció de nutrients de la fullaraca va ser lleugerament més alta pel nitrogen i més baixa pel fòsfor al coster. La reabsorció de fòsfor va ser sempre més alta a la vall. Un major creixement a la vall estimula la reabsorció de nutrients per l'efecte conegut per "source-sink".2n. cas: Manipulació experimental a partir de la irrigació i la fertilització.L'alzinar manipulat és relativament homogeni i se situa a uns 900 m d'altitud i en el vessant d'orientació E-SE del Barranc dels Torners; amb alzines d'uns 6 m d'alçada i una densitat mitjana de 18.500 peus/ha. Es va dissenyar un experiment factorial que ens permetés analitzar el paper de l'aigua, el nitrogen i el fòsfor, i les seves interaccions, per la qual cosa es van delimitar 24 parcel.les de 5 x 8 m., agrupades en blocs de vuit parcel.les. El fertilitzant es va aplicar de forma sòlida el març del 1989 i en una sola dosi, que consistia a 250 kg de N/ha en forma de nitrat amonic en els tractaments amb nitrogen i 125 kg de P/ha en forma de superfosfato calcic en els tractaments amb fòsfor. L'aigua es va proporcionar amb reg per goteig, amb un aport setmanal de 20-30 mm durant les èpoques més càlides de 1989, 1990 i 1991. El període d'estudi que presentem va des de la tardor de 1988 (abans de la manipulació) fins l'estiu de 1990. Diferències interannuals de les condicions ambientals en l'experiment de fertilització i d'irrigació han influenciat les característiques estructurals de la capçada a part dels canvis induits per l'experiment, de manera que fulles i branquillons produïts en anys secs (1989) són més petits que els produïts en anys més humits (1988). Aquestes diferències ja es van observar abans del tractament (comparant 1987 amb 1988). Malgrat això, la producción de 1990 reflecteix més clarament els efectes de l'expriment, atès que la irrigació es va poder començar a principis de primavera i no ja iniciat l'estiu (mitjans de juliol) com va succeir l'any 1989. L'aigua i el nitrogen son els principals factors que limiten el creixement de l'alzina. Malgrat això l'efecte negatiu del fosfor aplicat en forma de superfosfat càlcic no és clar. Els efectes negatius dels tractaments amb fòsfor possiblement es deuen a la interacció del calci amb el potassi en reduir l'absorció de potassi i per tant afectant el creixement de la capçada. L'efecte de l'aigua queda clarament reflectit en les característiques estructurals dels elements que composen la capçada: més pes i longitud dels brots així com de l'àrea de fulles. En canvi, contràriament al que esperariem, el pes especific de les fulles no és més baix en els tractaments amb aigua. Atès que la irrigació aplicada no ha modificat la radiació que arriba a les capçades, però en canvi la pluja sí que l'hagués modificat (degut als núvols), creiem que altres variables com la radiació incident semblen la causa més important que determina el pes específic. L'efecte de l'aigua en la concentració de nutrients ha estat en general una concentració més baixa en els tractaments amb aigua. Aquesta es pot explicar per una major producció en els tractaments amb aigua que ha donat com a resultat una dilució dels nutrients inclosos en una matèria orgànica més estructural. L'efecte del nitrogen també ha quedat reflectit en un major creixement dels elements que composen la capçada. S'ha obtingut més per mitja i longitud dels branquillons en aquest tractament. A més les fulles produïdes a la primavera de 1990 (menors d'un any) han presentat menys pes específic, i més pes i àrea mitjana. L'efecte del nitrogen en la concentració de nutrients ha quedat recollit en una major concentració a les fulles produïdes a la primavera de 1990 amb els tractaments de nitrogen. L'aigua i el nitrogen han augmentat l'àrea nova de fulles i l'índex foliar; aquests efectes a la capçada s'han produït abans i de forma més accentuada en els tractaments amb nitrogen que en els tractaments amb aigua, però aquests últims a més han incrementat el diàmetre dels arbres. Per tant la distribució de la producció en la fertilització amb nitrógeno sembla que s'ha dirigit més a les capçades que en el cas de la irrigació. Els tractaments amb nitrogen han augmentat la reabsorció de nitrogen i fòsfor en les fulles produïdes a la primavera de 1987 abans de la seva caiguda. Això es pot relacionar amb la major producció de fulles noves i per tant amb l'augment de la demanda de nutrients (efecte "source-sink"). Els tractaments amb aigua han augmentat la massa de fosfor reabsorbida però no el seu percentatge. Els tractaments amb fosfor han reduït l'àrea i pes mitjà de les fulles i la longitud mitjana dels branquillons. Això possiblement es pot explicar per la més baixa concentració de potassi en aquests elements i el seu paper en els processos d'expansió d'àrea foliar i de creixement en longitud dels branquillons. El tractament amb fòsfor no ha modificat la concentració d'aquest element.3r cas: Manipulació experimental a partir de pertorbacions: efecte del foc i la tallada arreu. En una zona d'alzinar, relativament homogènia, a finals de l'estiu del 1988 es va fer una tallada arreu en dues superficies (una al costat de l'altra) de 40m x 20m d'alzinar. D'aquestes es van treure els troncs de més de 2 cm de diàmetre i s'hi va deixar la resta. Les restes es van distribuir homogèniament, deixant al voltant d'una d'elles una zona totalment neta per controlar el foc que a la tardor de 1988 se li va practicar. S'han analitzat tres situacions: (1) Tallada arreu deixant les branques; (2) Tallada arreu sense deixar-hi res (tallafocs); i (3) després del foc. La regeneració de l'alzina ha estat un element comé en totes les pertorbacions practicades. Característiques comunes entre la parcel.la cremada, la parcel.la tallada arreu deixant les branques i la parcel.la tallada arreu i neta (tallafocs) han estat fulles de mida més gran en els rebrots que a les alzines no pertorbades. Les diferències han estat a les fulles de l'eix de creixement principal. A mesura que han anat apareixent nous eixos de creixement, les característiques estructurals de les fulles i branquillons dels rebrots s'han acostat més a les del bosc no pertorbat. Així, les diferències amb el bosc no pertorbat han desaparegut a les fraccions produïdes durant el segon any després de la pertorbació. Fraccions distribuïdes bàsicament en els eixos de creixement d'ordre més gran (quart i cinquè eix de creixement). Els rebrots de la parcel.la tallada amb branques han presentat diferències estructurals a les etapes inicials del seu creixement degut a la intercepció de la llum produïda per les branques tallades i deixades. Això s'ha reflectit en un creixement inicial més gran en l'eix principal i un menor desenvolupament lateral de la capçada, així com també un menor pes espectlic. Aquestes diferències han desaparegut un cop s'han superat les branques deixades a la parcel.la. La parcel.la tallada i neta (tallafocs) ha presentat un menor creixement com reflecteixen una menor àrea de fulla i àrea basal i un menor pes mitjà de l'eix principal dels rebrots. Les concentracions de nitrogen, fòsfor i sofre tendeixen a ser més baixes als estius i més altes a la tardor i la primavera, períodes en què el creixement és mes baix. Les variacions temporals de la massa de nitrogen i fòsfor per unitat de superfície de fulla posen en evidència la importància de la reabsorció de nitrogen i fòsfor en aquestes etapes inicials de creixement que poden alimentar les noves estructure:s produïdes. Podem afirmar que l'alzina presenta una gran plasticitat pel que fa als elements que composen la seva capçada en relació a les disponibilitats d'aigua i nutnents. Aquesta plasticitat que queda recollida en mesures com el pes mitjà de les fulles i la seva àrea mitjana així com el pes mitjà i la longitud dels branquillons. El contingut de nutrients també recull les diferències de disponibilitat d'aquests elements. En general s'observen a les fulles d'alzina, valors més baixos de nitrogen i fòsfor als estius i valors més alts a la tardor i la primavera. Això corrobora l'existència de la reabsorció d'aquests elements al llarg de la vida de les fulles i per tant un cert paper d'aquests processos en el subministre de nutrients en els moments de creixement a la primavera., Canopy structure and nutrient content in a "Quercus ilex" L. forest in NE Spain were analysed in three conditions. 1. Seasonal and spatial variation within a catchment. Two locations (ridge-top - RT-, at 975 m and valley bottom -VB-, al 700 m were compared. N, P and Mg concentration (% dry weight) and N and Mg mass (micrograms/cm2) in leaves were higher al the VB site. K concentration and mass in leaves was higher at the RT site. N resorption increased from top to bottom of the canopy. Higher N and lower P resorption at the RT site was found. Seasonal changes of P and N concentration on a leaf area basis suggested P and N replenishment during lower growth activity. These variations were larger at the VB site. 2. Fertilization with Nitrogen and/or phosphorus and irrigation effects. Water and nitrogen treatments had a positive effect on growth. Increased mean weight of leaves and stems, stem length, leaf turnover and leaf area index were found. Nitrogen produced the increase in mean leaf area. Mean leaf area and stem length of current leaves after treatments were smaller m phosphorus treatments. Nitrogen treatments increased the N concentration in young leaves. The increased N and P resorptions in nitrogen treatments were probably stimulated by increased new leaf growth.3. Effects of clearcutting and fire. It was analysed how "Quercus ilex" responds after (1) burning, (2) clearcutting and leaving the slash and (3) clearcutting and removing the slash (firebreak area). Large leaves on the main axis resprouts were produced. The largest stem elongation occurred the first year. During the second year new leaves and stems tended to show similar structural characteristics than those from the undisturbed forest. The slash presence reduced lateral biomass expansion and the initial specific leaf weight. The firebreak area showed initial lower production. Minimum N, P, and S concentrations were found in summers. N and P mass variations showed the importance of resorption. Differences between treatments were a lower N concentration in the burned plot, lower initial importance of N mass resorption in the clearcut plot and lower K concentration in firebreak area.

According to the IPCC (2007), the Mediterranean basin is expected to suffer important changes in temperature and precipitation in the next few decades, leading the climate warmer and dryer. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the possible effects of increased drought on species with different structural and physiological traits, to be able to predict possible changes in the structure and composition of Mediterranean forests. Moreover, it will be necessary to assess whether traditional management practices can mitigate the effects of climate change on these forests. The main aim of this study has been to analyze the effects of increased drought on the mortality, growth and resprouting patterns of two co-occurring Mediterranean oak species with contrasting leaf habit (the evergreen Quercus ilex and the winter-deciduous Quercus cerrioides), and to assess the effects of selective thinning on their response to increased drought. Our results show a differential effect of increased drought between species: no differences were observed in the growth of Q. ilex while Q. cerrioides reduced its growth under increased drought conditions. Selective thinning reduced the negative effects of increased drought on tree growth, although this beneficial effect tended to decrease during the experiment. Our results show that increasing aridity in Mediterranean areas can be a constraining factor for deciduous oaks, thus potentially causing their decline in mixed forests and favouring their substitution by the evergreen congeneric species. However, as seen in this study, management can strongly encourage growth both for deciduous and evergreen species, thus reversing the effects of increased water stress on Mediterranean coppices.

[eng] Semi-arid environments are zones where annual precipitation is less than a half of annual potential evapotranspiration, yet water availability is high enough to allow tree growth. Climate change is expected to have a major impact on forests growing at those regions. Rising atmospheric [CO2] (Ca) is expected to increase forest productivity. However, this fertilizing effect may be partially offset by an increase in water stress, either by reductions in water availability or by increases in atmospheric evaporative demand. Additionally, species-specific responses to climate change may further promote invasive tree species expansion. GOTILWA+ process-based model was used to project the performance of sub-humid forests growing in semi-arid conditions under climate change. However, a carpenter is just as good as the least sharpened of his tools. So, firstly it was developed and tested the RheaG Weather Generator Algorithm, a first-order Markov transition matrix-based WGA, in order to assure the ability to generate statistically robust meteorological time-series. Then, Bayesian inverse modeling was applied in order to calibrate GOTILWA+ model from “in situ” observations from two different forest stands, both occupied by water-demanding tree species growing surrounded by semi-arid conditions. Firstly, combined effects of increased vapor pressure deficit (D), increased Ca and decreased water availability in an S.W. Australian Eucalyptus salinga Sm. plantation were evaluated. Increasing Ca up to 700 ppm alone was projected to increase E. saligna productivity up to a 33%, and forest carbon stock up to a ~60%. However, combined reductions in water availability and D increases offset part of this fertilizing effect, down to 13% and 35%, respectively. Furthermore, limitations on forest productivity due to D increases were projected to occur in a magnitude similar than productivity reductions due to reduced soil water availability. Afterwards, in a N.E. Iberian Mediterranean riparian forest where black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is outcompeting three autochthonous deciduous tree species, sap flow observations were used to calibrate GOTILWA+ model for black locust and European Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior L.). Field observations suggested that black locust success was explained by its facultative phreatophytic behavior, as well as an increased water use efficiency in stem growth, when compared with co-occurring autochthonous tree species. GOTILWA+ projections, including regionalized climate change scenarios, suggested that under global warming black locust productivity and growth would be further enhanced than its native counterpart, the European ash. The reasons are an increase on daily productivity as Ca increases, and an enlargement of its vegetative period as temperature rises. As conclusions, the invasive black locust growth performance is expected to be favored by global warming in Mediterranean riparian forests. On the other hand, E. saligna responses to climate change will strongly depend on the balance between the beneficial effects of increasing Ca and physiological limitations due to water stress increase. At stand level, results highlight the importance of accounting for the water available for the trees at the whole soil column, and not only at the superficial soil layers, a challenging issue that is often not resolved in simulation models. Moreover, results also highlight that properly accounting for vapor pressure deficit changes is of a major importance when projecting forest responses to climate change, as it will strongly determine stand changes in productivity and water use efficiency. This thesis also highlights the importance of training simulation models from field observations, not only to describe ecophysiological processes, but also to obtain the most likely set of parameters providing "in situ" observations.

[eng] Pre-dispersal seed predation (PDSP, hereafter) significantly reduces plant reproductive output. The negative effects on plant fitness have triggered the development of different strategies to protect the seeds and/or reduce the impact of PDSP. These strategies, in turn, have promoted insect trophic specialization by means of morphological, physiological and behavioral adaptations. The close relationship between specialist insects and their host plants conditions insect community assemblage and population dynamics. Specialization would favour multi-species co-occurrence according to the Competitive Exclusion Principle, as different species cannot use the same limited resources. At the same time, specificity makes these species strongly dependent on a particular trophic resource, so that host plant population dynamics may lead to bottom-up forces influencing insect numbers. In this Thesis, I have studied the consequences of trophic specialization on species assemblage and demography in the most prevalent pre-dispersal predators of oak Quercus spp., chestnuts Castanea sativa and hazelnut Corylus avellana seeds, namely the weevils of the genus Curculio (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Using DNA barcoding I could identify larvae infesting the seeds to the species level and hence assess resource partitioning among Curculio spp. in oak-hazelnut mixed forests. These forests were distributed along a latitudinal gradient in which the degree of overlap in the timing of seeding between the two species differed. The results showed that there was a strict host-based segregation, as the species found in hazelnuts was never recorded on oak acorns and vice versa. Contrary to other studies, segregation of seed parasites was not driven by seed size, as the seeds of both plants were large enough to host the larvae of any species. Rather, co-existence was more likely modulated by the combination of time partitioning, and probably by dissimilarities in dispersal-dormancy strategies among weevils. The timing of oogenesis differs among Curculio spp. and does the timing of seeding between oaks and hazelnuts. Early maturing hazelnuts are thus exploited only by Curculio nucum, as its eggs mature earlier too. Such specialization on a patchily distributed host plant conditioned its population genetics, as gene-flow between populations showed restrictions undetected in the other Curculio spp. that fed on the widespread oaks. Regarding the bottom-up effects of food availability on insect numbers we assessed that, as expected, irregular seed crops (masting) conditions weevil population dynamics and certainly help reducing acorn predation in Mediterranean oaks. However, we found that the effects of rainfall stochasticity on the success of weevil emergence from the soil (i.e. rain is needed to soften the soil) contributed to decrease seed predation in a similar magnitude to masting. The present Thesis stresses the need of introducing the time/phenology component (i. e. egg maturation, timing of seeding) to assess the mechanisms underlying host plant-specialist insect associations. Also, it shows that, despite their specificity, other environmental variables apart from food availability condition weevil numbers. This result must be considered in further studies on the significance of oak masting as a strategy to reduce pre-dispersal seed predation. Lastly, the results provide an insight into the potential consequences of Global Change on the communities of these specialist insects linked to oaks. The populations of a narrow specialist like the hazelnut feeding C. nucum will be very vulnerable to forest fragmentation, which will reduce more severely inter-population gene-flow and lead to population bottlenecks. In turn, climate change (e.g. temperature rising, rainfall decrease) could disrupt the matching phenologies of insects and their host plants and reduce insect population size., [spa] La depredación de semillas predispersión (PDSP, de aquí en adelante) reduce significativamente el desempeño reproductivo de las plantas. Los efectos negativos han desencadenado el desarrollo de diferentes estrategias para proteger las semillas y/o reducir el impacto de PDSP. Estas estrategias, han promovido la especialización trófica de insectos a través de adaptaciones morfológicas, fisiológicas y de comportamiento. La estrecha relación entre los insectos especialistas y sus plantas hospedantes condiciona el ensamblaje de las comunidades de insectos y la dinámica poblacional. La especialización favorecería la coexistencia de múltiples especies de acuerdo con el Principio de Exclusión Competitiva, ya que estas no pueden usar los mismos recursos limitados. Al mismo tiempo, la especificidad hace que estas especies dependan fuertemente de un recurso trófico particular, de modo que la dinámica poblacional de plantas hospedadoras puede conllevar a que las fuerzas “bottom-up” influyan en el número de insectos. En esta Tesis, he estudiado las consecuencias de la especialización trófica en el ensamblaje de especies y la demografía en los depredadores pre-dispersión más prevalentes de Quercus spp., castañas Castanea sativa y avellanas Corylus avellana, principalmente los gorgojos del género Curculio (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Usando técnicas de secuenciación de ADN pude identificar las larvas que parasitan las semillas a nivel de especie y, por lo tanto, evaluar la segregación de recursos entre especies de Curculio spp. en bosques mixtos de roble y avellana. Estos bosques se distribuyeron a lo largo de un gradiente latitudinal en el cual el grado de superposición de su distribución espacial difería entre las dos especies hospederas. Los resultados mostraron que hubo una estricta segregación basada en el hospedador, ya que la especie encontrada en avellanas nunca se registró en bellotas de roble y viceversa. Contrariamente a otros estudios, la segregación de los parásitos de las semillas no se debió al tamaño de la semilla, ya que las semillas de ambas plantas eran lo suficientemente grandes como para albergar las larvas de cualquier especie. Por el contrario, la coexistencia fue modulado con mayor probabilidad por la combinación de la partición de tiempo, y las diferencias en las estrategias de latencia y dispersión entre los gorgojos. El periodo de oogénesis de Curculio spp difiere con el periodo producción de semillas en robles y avellanas. Las avellanas de maduración temprana son explotadas solo por Curculio nucum, ya que sus huevos también maduran antes. Dicha especialización en una planta hospedera distribuida en forma dispersa condicionó su genética poblacional, ya que el flujo genético entre poblaciones mostró restricciones no detectadas en las otras especies de Curculio spp. que se alimentaban de los robles con distribución continua. Con respecto a los efectos “bottom-up” de la disponibilidad de alimentos sobre el número de insectos, evaluamos que, como era de esperar, la producción irregular de semillas (masting) condicionan la dinámica poblacional de los gorgojos y ciertamente contribuyen a reducir la depredación de las bellotas en los robles del Mediterráneo. Sin embargo, encontramos que los efectos de la estocasticidad de las lluvias sobre el éxito de la emergencia del gorgojo desde el suelo (la lluvia es necesaria para ablandar el suelo) contribuyeron a disminuir la depredación de semillas en una magnitud similar a la del masting. La presente Tesis enfatiza la necesidad de introducir el componente tiempo/fenología (es decir, la maduración del óvulo, el momento producción de semillas) para evaluar los mecanismos que subyacen a las asociaciones de insectos especialistas en plantas hospederas. Además, muestra que, a pesar de su especificidad, otras variables ambientales aparte de la disponibilidad de alimentos condicionan el número de gorgojos. Este resultado debe considerarse en estudios posteriores sobre la importancia de la producción irregular de semillas de roble como una estrategia para reducir la depredación de semillas pre-dispersión. Por último, los resultados proporcionan una idea de las posibles consecuencias del cambio global en las comunidades de estos insectos especializados vinculados a los robles. Las poblaciones de un especialista, como C. nucum que se alimenta de la avellana, será muy vulnerables a la fragmentación de los bosques, lo que reducirá el flujo genético entre las poblaciones y provocará cuellos de botella en la población. [eng] During the last decades, most of the studies based on climate change effects on vegetation physiology have focused on upland forests and species at their border of distribution, since, in both conditions, species are highly affected by water scarcity. Although few studies have focused on water availability effects on riparian vegetation, these species could be extremely affected by water scarcity as they are usually found in wet environments and they may not have enough ecophysiological controls to cope with prolonged drought periods. Moreover, riparian zones are considered hotspots of nitrogen (N) processes. These ecotones can reduce part of the N loads received from adjacent ecosystems before they reach the stream, mainly via denitrification and vegetation uptake. In Mediterranean regions, where shallow organic soil layers are disconnected from groundwater, denitrification process is limited by the weak anoxic conditions on riparian forests soils. There, vegetation uptake becomes the main driver for N removal in Mediterranean riparian zones. Climate change effects on riparian vegetation may cascade down and modify this well-known capacity to remove N from riparian zones. The findings from two Mediterranean riparian forests in La Tordera catchment showed that riparian tree species are already experiencing the effects of drought periods in the Mediterranean region. Quercus robur species, typically found in mid-European floodplains, is already experiencing tree growth decline at its southernmost distribution range edge. On the other hand, riparian tree species at Mediterranean forests showed high dependence on soil water availability during summer, obtaining more than 80% of the water transpired from the vadose zone. Phreatophitic species, Alnus glutinosa and Populus nigra, took up water from the groundwater compartment during spring but soil water was their main water source during summer. A. glutinosa did not present ecophysiological controls to avoid drought situations, while P. nigra increased its iWUE during dry years. Fraxinus excelsior was cohabiting with both species in the riparian forest. This species, located far away from the stream channel, was more depending on soil water availability and did not present any ecophysiological mechanism to cope with summer drought. Conversely, the N-fixing invasive species Robinia pseudoacacia, which was co-occurring all across the riparian forest, showed high plasticity to cope with different water availability conditions. Additionally, the findings obtained from the effects of riparian vegetation on water and N fluxes highlighted the high spatial heterogeneity of Mediterranean riparian forests within relatively small distances (~25 m). The studied Mediterranean riparian forest showed a remarkable spatial heterogeneity on water availability, with groundwater levels increasing from the near-stream zone (~0.6m deep) to the hillslope edge (~2.2m deep). Shallow groundwater tables enhanced the connectivity between vadose zone and groundwater at the near-stream zone, allowing greater transpiration and N uptake rates compared to the hillslope edge. Conversely, denitrification rates were generally low across all the riparian area due to water limitation and its weak anoxic conditions. Nevertheless, these soil conditions promote respiration rates all across the riparian forest soil, and thus, riparian soils emitted large CO2 fluxes. Finally, simulation based on climate change projections suggested a future increase in soil N concentrations as well as a reduction of the effective N-removal area of this riparian zones. The feasible substitution of autochthonous species by the already present R. pseudoacacia may homogenize soil N availability across the riparian area but would not increase the future soil N availability. Overall, our findings highlight the spatial heterogeneity of Mediterranean riparian zones and the need to better evaluate spatio-temporal processes to understand their mechanisms. N retention in Mediterranean riparian soils occur mainly by vegetation uptake. Yet, future climate projections may exacerbate water scarcity problems, inhibiting denitrification rates and reducing vegetation uptake. Therefore, these results challenge the well-accepted capacity to reduce N loads reaching the stream, and suggest that Mediterranean riparian soils can become a potential source of N to adjacent aquatic ecosystems in the future., [cat] Durant les darreres dècades, la majoria d'estudis sobre els efectes del canvi climàtic en la vegetació s'han centrat en boscos d'alta muntanya amb un gradient latitudinal i espècies en els seus límits de distribució geogràfica, ja que, en ambdues situacions, els individus poden trobar-se afectades per l'escassetat d'aigua. Tot i que pocs estudis s'han centrat en els efectes de disponibilitat d'aigua en la vegetació de ribera, aquestes espècies podrien veure's extremadament afectades per l'escassetat d'aigua, donat que normalment es troben en ambients humits i poden no disposar de controls ecofisiològics suficients per afrontar períodes sequera prolongada. D'altra banda, les zones de ribera es consideren hotspots dels processos del nitrogen (N). Aquests ecotons poden reduir part de les càrregues N que arriben dels ecosistemes adjacents abans d'arribar al riu, principalment a través de la desnitrificació i l'absorció per part de la vegetació. A les regions mediterrànies, on els horitzons orgànics dels sòls orgànics queden desconnectats de l'aigua del freàtic, el procés de desnitrificació està limitat per les baixes condicions anòxiques dels sòls de ribera. Així doncs, l'absorció de N per part de la vegetació es converteix en el principal procés de retenció de N a les zones de ribera mediterrànies. Els efectes del canvi climàtic en la vegetació de ribera poden també modificar aquesta capacitat d'eliminar N de les zones de ribera. Els resultats obtinguts en dos boscos de ribera mediterranis de la conca de La Tordera mostren que les espècies arbòries de ribera estan experimentant els efectes de la sequera a la regió mediterrània. Quercus robur, que normalment es troba en planes d'inundació d'Europa central, estan experimentant un declivi en el creixement anual dels individus en el seu límit de distribució geogràfica més meridional. D'altra banda, les espècies arbòries dels boscos de ribera mediterranis una elevada dependència a la disponibilitat d'aigua del sòl durant el període d'estiu, obtenint més del 80% de l'aigua transpirada a la zona de no saturada del sòl. Les espècies freatòfiles, Alnus glutinosa i Populus nigra, obtenen l'aigua principalment del freàtic durant la primavera, però el sòl no saturat és la principal font d'obtenció d'aigua durant l'estiu. A. glutinosa no presenta controls ecofisiològics per evitar les situacions de sequera, mentre que P. nigra augmenta la seva iWUE durant els anys secs. Fraxinus excelsior conviu amb ambdues espècies al bosc de ribera. Aquesta espècie, situada a les zones allunyades del llit del riu, presenta una forta dependència a la disponibilitat d'aigua del sòl tot i no tenir mecanismes ecofisiològics per afrontar la sequera estival. Contràriament, l'espècie invasora fixadora de N, Robinia pseudoacacia, es troba distribuida al llarg de tot el bosc de ribera i presenta una gran plasticitat per fer front a les diferents condicions de disponibilitat d'aigua. A més, els resultats obtinguts sobre els efectes de la vegetació de ribera sobre els fluxos d'aigua i N han destacat la gran heterogeneïtat espacial dels boscos de ribera mediterranis en distàncies relativament curtes (~ 25 m). El bosc de ribera mediterrània estudiat mostra una notable heterogeneïtat espacial en la disponibilitat d'aigua, amb nivells freàtics decreixents des de la zona pròxima a la llera del riu (~ 0,6 m de profunditat) fins a les zones més allunyades (~ 2,2 m de profunditat). Els nivells freàtics més superficials faciliten l'intercanvi entre la zona saturada i no saturada del sòl, permetent també una major transpiració de la vegetació i absorció de N per part d'aquesta a les zones més pròximes a la llera del riu. Per contra, les taxes de desnitrificació són baixes a tota la zona de ribera degut a la limitació del sòl de ribera en quant a contingut d'aigua del sòl, i la conseqüent anòxia que afavoreix l'activitat dels bacteris desnitrificadors. No obstant això, aquestes condicions aeròbiques del sòl, amb relativa humitat, promouen altes taxes de respiració a tot el sòl forestal de ribera, i la conseqüent elevada emissió de CO2. Finalment, la simulació basada en les projeccions del canvi climàtic suggereixen un augment futur de les concentracions del N al sòl, així com una reducció de l'àrea de ribera capaç de retenir N de forma efectiva. La possible substitució de les espècies autòctones per la invasora R. pseudoacacia podria homogeneïtzar la disponibilitat de N del sòl al llarg de la zona de ribera, però no augmentaria la futura disponibilitat de N del sòl. Així doncs, els nostres resultats destaquen l'heterogeneïtat espacial de les zones de ribera mediterrànies i la necessitat d'avaluar els processos a escala espaciotemporal per comprendre'ls millor. La retenció de N en sòls de ribera mediterranis es produeix principalment per l'absorció d'aquest per part de la vegetació. No obstant, les projeccions climàtiques poden agreujar els problemes d'escassetat d'aigua, inhibint les taxes de desnitrificació i reduint l'absorció de N per part de la vegetació. Per tant, aquests resultats qüestionen la capacitat de les zones de ribera mediterrànies de reduir les càrregues de N que arriben als rius, així com suggereixen que els sòls de ribera mediterranis poden esdevenir una font potencial de N als ecosistemes aquàtics adjacents en el futur.

[eng] The variations of ecosystem and soil respiration are mainly driven by temperature and precipitation, but the importance of temperature and precipitation could vary across temporal and spatial. At diurnal to annual temporal scales, ecosystem and soil respiration generally increase with average annual temperature, but very low or very high soil moisture has been shown to diminish the temperature response of respiration. Therefore, in water-limited ecosystem, such as the Mediterranean region where the seasonal pattern is characterized with significant summer drought, precipitation patterns are likely to play a particularly important role in regulating ecosystem and soil respiration inter annual whereas temperature may be much less factor. In this dissertation, I try to reduce the uncertainties of terrestrial net ecosystem exchange in Mediterranean region by measuring the interaction between environmental factors and soil respiration at short (i.e., diurnal) and medium (i.e., seasonal-years) temporal scales. Three in situ experiments were employed to investigate how soil respiration responds to environmental variations and management. Together, these three studies gave a consistent picture on how soil moisture strongly affects the dynamic and magnitude of soil respiration in Mediterranean forests. Results elucidated a clear soil moisture threshold; when soil moisture is above this threshold, soil temperature is the main driver of soil respiration, meanwhile, when soil moisture is below this threshold, soil respiration decoupled from soil temperature and is controlled by soil moisture. This suggests that soil moisture modified, at least in Mediterranean ecosystems, the temperature sensitivity of respiration through threshold-like response., [spa] Las variaciones de la respiración del ecosistema y del suelo son principalmente impulsadas por la temperatura y la precipitación, pero la importancia de la temperatura y la precipitación puede variar a lo largo del tiempo y el espacio. En conjunto, estos tres estudios dieron una imagen consistente de cómo la humedad del suelo afecta fuertemente la dinámica y la magnitud de la respiración del suelo en los bosques mediterráneos. Los resultados dilucidaron un umbral claro de humedad del suelo; Cuando la humedad del suelo está por encima de este umbral, la temperatura del suelo es el principal impulsor de la respiración del suelo, mientras que la humedad del suelo está por debajo de este umbral, la respiración del suelo está desacoplada de la temperatura del suelo y controlada por la humedad del suelo. [eng] The Mediterranean Basin is a climate-change hotspot of the world. Predicted reductions in annual precipitation, increases in mean temperature, and increases in the variability and occurrence of extreme droughts and heat waves are likely to affect species abundance and distribution. The existence of sympatric plants with different morphological and phenological strategies raises the question how they will respond to novel climate conditions. There is a strong need to improve the mechanistic understanding of key foliar ecophysiological parameters in response to abiotic stressors on a small scale if we are to predict the carbon budget of plant ecosystems in larger scales. We first reviewed contrasting growth responses to temperature of angio- and gymnosperms in the Iberian Peninsula. Secondly, we studied the seasonal acclimation of different foliar ecophysiological traits in two leaf positions of four Mediterranean tree species in extensive field experiments. We aimed to shed light on the mechanistic understanding of the foliar respiratory and photosynthetic responses to abiotic stress such as drought and temperature. We found contrasting demographic responses in Mediterranean conifer and angiosperm trees. Widespread forest successional advance of angiosperms and negative growth responses of gymnosperms to temperature are currently occurring in the Iberian Peninsula. Trait-based differences in these two groups contribute to explain their different responses to temperature and their different role during successional processes. The acclimation behaviour of photosynthetic and morphological traits to seasonal variable growth conditions was strongly pronounced in all tree species. Photosynthetic machineries were resilient to moderate drought, whereas severe drought induced acclimation of morphological traits, photosynthetic downregulation and leaf abscission. The lack of replenishment of soil-water reserves during the early growing season critically enforced the summer drought. We also observed a notable seasonal acclimation of the thermal optima and of the curvature of temperature responses of photosynthetic assimilation. The photosynthetic system was better acclimated to lower temperatures in winter and to heat stress in the drier and hotter year. Mild winter temperatures provided a period of growth and recovery that resulted in biochemical recovery, new shoot growth, and moderate transpiration across all evergreen species. High radiation and sudden low temperatures had a combinatory negative effect on the photosynthetic apparatus leading to photoinhibitory stress -especially in sunlit leaves. Species-specific acclimation partly offset these overall trends in responses to drought and temperature stress. Quercus ilex L. and to a lesser extent Q. pubescens Wild. showed the highest plasticity in photosynthetic traits whereas Pinus halepensis Mill. was most tolerant across the seasons with the most stable temperature response pattern. Arbutus. unedo L. was the most vulnerable to drought and photoinhibitory stress in winter. A. unedo and Q. pubescens had a less sclerophyllic leaf habit and invested the least in acclimation of the morphological structure being most vulnerable to drought-induced leaf abscission. Shaded leaves showed generally a lower photosynthetic potential, but cushioned negative impacts under stress periods. A long-term rainfall-exclusion experiment in a Q. ilex forest increased the foliar carbon-use efficiency and the plasticity of foliar respiratory and photosynthetic traits, but did not affect the biochemical photosynthetic potential. A favourable growth period was thus exploited more efficiently. Overall, our results indicate that Mediterranean climax-species exhibit a strong acclimatory capacity to warmer and drier conditions, but can be sensitive to extreme drought and extreme temperature stress. The performance of the plants during winter might give important insights in the dynamics of Mediterranean forest communities under novel environmental conditions. Leaf position is an indispensable factor when estimating the canopy carbon balance. Angiosperms and gymnosperms had fundamental different photosynthetic strategies of stress-avoidance versus stress-tolerance, respectively., [spa] El cambio climático aumentará la sequía en la Cuenca Mediterránea y posiblemente afectará a la abundancia y la distribución de especies. Revisamos las respuestas contrastadas del crecimiento a la temperatura de angio- y gimnospermas en la Península Ibérica. Estudiamos la variación de los efectos del estrés térmico y por sequía en rasgos morfológicos, fotosintéticos y de la respiración foliar según la especie y la posición en el dosel. Además, evaluamos el efecto de una sequía crónica sobre la respiración foliar y la fotosíntesis de Quercus ilex L. La maquinaria fotosintética se mostró resiliente frente a la sequía moderada, mientras que la sequía extrema, agravada por las bajas reservas de agua en el suelo, indujo la aclimatación de la morfología foliar, la inhibición de la bioquímica fotosintética y la abscisión foliar. El sistema fotosintético se aclimató mejor a las temperaturas bajas que al estrés por calor. Las temperaturas suaves en invierno derivaron en la recuperación bioquímica, un nuevo crecimiento de los brotes y una transpiración moderada. La elevada radiación y el frío repentino mostraron un efecto combinado negativo, causando estrés fotoinhibitorio. El estrés térmico y por sequía fue más pronunciado en hojas de sol y aminorado en hojas de sombra. Q.ilex y, en menor grado, Q. pubescens Wild. mostraron la plasticidad más elevada de los rasgos fotosintéticos, mientras que Pinus halepensis Mill. fue más tolerante, mostrando la respuesta más estable a la temperatura. Arbutus unedo L. fue la especie más vulnerable a la sequía y al estrés fotoinhibitorio. En respuesta a la sequía crónica, Q. ilex incrementó la eficiencia en el uso del carbono y la plasticidad de los atributos fotosintéticos y de respiración foliar, pero no afectó al potencial fotosintético. En resumen, las especies climácicas mediterráneas se aclimatan frente a condiciones más cálidas y secas, pero pueden ser sensibles ante sequías extremas. El funcionamiento durante el invierno es vital para entender la dinámica de los bosques mediterráneos. La posición de las hojas en la copa es indispensable para estimar el balance de carbono del dosel. Angiospermas y gimnospermas presentan estrategias fotosintéticas contrastadas, de evitación y tolerancia del estrés, respectivamente.

According to the IPCC (2007), the Mediterranean basin is expected to suffer important changes in temperature and precipitation in the next few decades, leading the climate warmer and dryer. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the possible effects of increased drought on species with different structural and physiological traits, to be able to predict possible changes in the structure and composition of Mediterranean forests. Moreover, it will be necessary to assess whether traditional management practices can mitigate the effects of climate change on these forests. The main aim of this study has been to analyze the effects of increased drought on the mortality, growth and resprouting patterns of two co-occurring Mediterranean oak species with contrasting leaf habit (the evergreen Quercus ilex and the winter-deciduous Quercus cerrioides), and to assess the effects of selective thinning on their response to increased drought. Our results show a differential effect of increased drought between species: no differences were observed in the growth of Q. ilex while Q. cerrioides reduced its growth under increased drought conditions. Selective thinning reduced the negative effects of increased drought on tree growth, although this beneficial effect tended to decrease during the experiment. Our results show that increasing aridity in Mediterranean areas can be a constraining factor for deciduous oaks, thus potentially causing their decline in mixed forests and favouring their substitution by the evergreen congeneric species. However, as seen in this study, management can strongly encourage growth both for deciduous and evergreen species, thus reversing the effects of increased water stress on Mediterranean coppices.
