- Abstract
In April 2023, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote on newly proposed taxa, the phylum Negarnaviricota was amended and emended. The phylum was expanded by one new family, 14 new genera, and 140 new species. Two genera and 538 species were renamed. One species was moved, and four were abolished. This article presents the updated taxonomy of Negarnaviricota as now accepted by the ICTV

A putative new ampelovirus was detected in Vitis vinifera cv. Carnelian showing mild leafroll symptoms and molecularly characterized. The complete genome consisted of 13,625 nt and had a structure similar to that of members of subgroup I in the genus Ampelovirus (fam. Closteroviridae). In-depth analyses showed that the virus from cv. Carnelian is the most distinct member of the “GLRaV-4 lineage” of ampeloviruses, which comprises GLRaV-4, -5, -6, -9, and the recently characterized GLRaV-Pr, and GLRaV-De. This virus appears to be a new member of the family Closteroviridae, for which the provisional name grapevine leafroll-associated Carnelian virus is proposed.

- Abstract
Hypoviridae is a family of capsidless viruses with positive-sense RNA genomes of 7.3-18.3 kb that possess either a single large open reading frame (ORF) or two ORFs. The ORFs appear to be translated from genomic RNA by non-canonical mechanisms, i.e. internal ribosome entry site- and stop/restart translation. This family includes the genera Alphahypovirus, Betahypovirus, Gammahypovirus, Deltahypovirus, Epsilonhypovirus, Zetahypovirus, Thetahypovirus and Etahypovirus. Hypovirids have been detected in ascomycetous and basidiomycetous filamentous fungi and are considered to replicate in host, Golgi apparatus-derived, lipid vesicles that contain virus dsRNA as the replicative form. Some hypovirids induce hypovirulence to host fungi, while others do not. This is a summary of the ICTV report on the family Hypoviridae, which is available at www.ictv.global/report/hypoviridae.

Virology - Abstract
The family Yadokariviridae, with the genera Alphayadokarivirus and Betayadokarivirus, includes capsidless non-segmented positive-sense (+) RNA viruses that hijack capsids from phylogenetically distant double-stranded RNA viruses. Yadokarivirids likely replicate inside the hijacked heterocapsids using their own RNA-directed RNA polymerase, mimicking dsRNA viruses despite their phylogenetic placement in a (+) RNA virus lineage. Yadokarivirids can have negative or positive impacts on their host fungi, through interactions with the capsid donor dsRNA viruses. This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) report on the family Yadokariviridae, which is available at ictv.global/report/yadokariviridae.

- Abstract
The family Hadakaviridae, including the genus Hadakavirus, accommodates capsidless viruses with a 10- or 11-segmented positive-sense (+) RNA genome. Currently known hosts are ascomycetous filamentous fungi. Although phylogenetically related to polymycovirids with a segmented double-stranded RNA genome and certain encapsidated picorna-like viruses, hadakavirids are distinct in their lack of a capsid ('hadaka' means naked in Japanese) and their consequent inability to be pelleted by conventional ultracentrifugation; they show ribonuclease susceptibility in host tissue homogenates. This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the family Hadakaviridae, which is available at ictv.global/report/hadakaviridae.

- Abstract
In March 2021, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote on newly proposed taxa, the phylum Negarnaviricota was amended and emended. The phylum was expanded by four families (Aliusviridae, Crepuscuviridae, Myriaviridae, and Natareviridae), three subfamilies (Alpharhabdovirinae, Betarhabdovirinae, and Gammarhabdovirinae), 42 genera, and 200 species. Thirty-nine species were renamed and/or moved and seven species were abolished. This article presents the updated taxonomy of Negarnaviricota as now accepted by the ICTV.

- Abstract
Contains fulltext : 218147.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), The Executive Committee of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) recognizes the need for a standardized nomenclature for virus species. This article sets out the case for establishing a binomial nomenclature and presents the advantages and disadvantages of different naming formats. The Executive Committee understands that adopting a binomial system would have major practical consequences, and invites comments from the virology community before making any decisions to change the existing nomenclature. The Executive Committee will take account of these comments in deciding whether to approve a standardized binomial system at its next meeting in October 2020. Note that this system would relate only to the formal names of virus species and not to the names of viruses.

Of note, the ICTV has approved, by an absolute majority, the creation of additional taxonomical ranks above those recognized previously. A total of 15 ranks (realm, subrealm, kingdom, subkingdom, phylum, subphylum, class, subclass, order, suborder, family, subfamily, genus, subgenus, and species) are now available to encompass the entire spectrum of virus diversity. Classification at ranks above genus is not obligatory but can be used by the authors of new taxonomic proposals when scientific justification is provided.

- Abstract
The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) is tasked with classifying viruses into taxa (phyla to species) and devising taxon names. Virus names and virus name abbreviations are currently not within the ICTV’s official remit and are not regulated by an official entity. Many scientists, medical/veterinary professionals, and regulatory agencies do not address evolutionary questions nor are they concerned with the hierarchical organization of the viral world, and therefore, have limited use for ICTV-devised taxa. Instead, these professionals look to the ICTV as an expert point source that provides the most current taxonomic affiliations of viruses of interests to facilitate document writing. These needs are currently unmet as an ICTV-supported, easily searchable database that includes all published virus names and abbreviations linked to their taxa is not available. In addition, in stark contrast to other biological taxonomic frameworks, virus taxonomy currently permits individual species to have several members. Consequently, confusion emerges among those who are not aware of the difference between taxa and viruses, and because certain well-known viruses cannot be located in ICTV publications or be linked to their species. In addition, the number of duplicate names and abbreviations has increased dramatically in the literature. To solve this conundrum, the ICTV could mandate listing all viruses of established species and all reported unclassified viruses in forthcoming online ICTV Reports and create a searchable webpage using this information. The International Union of Microbiology Societies could also consider changing the mandate of the ICTV to include the nomenclature of all viruses in addition to taxon considerations. With such a mandate expansion, official virus names and virus name abbreviations could be catalogued and virus nomenclature could be standardized. As a result, the ICTV would become an even more useful resource for all stakeholders in

The family Asfarviridae includes the single species African swine fever virus, isolates of which have linear dsDNA genomes of 170–194 kbp. Virions have an internal core, an internal lipid membrane, an icosahedral capsid and an outer lipid envelope. Infection of domestic pigs and wild boar results in an acute haemorrhagic fever with transmission by contact or ingestion, or by ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. Indigenous pigs act as reservoirs in Africa, where infection is endemic, and from where introductions occur periodically to Europe. This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the taxonomy of the Asfarviridae, which is available at www.ictv.global/report/asfarviridae. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

- Abstract
Botanical, mycological, zoological, and prokaryotic species names follow the Linnaean format, consisting of an italicized Latinized binomen with a capitalized genus name and a lower case species epithet (e.g., Homo sapiens). Virus species names, however, do not follow a uniform format, and, even when binomial, are not Linnaean in style. In this thought exercise, we attempted toconvert all currently official names ofspecies included in the virusfamily Arenaviridae and the virus order Mononegavirales to Linnaean binomials, and to identify and address associated challenges and concerns. Surprisingly, this endeavor was not as complicated or time-consuming as even the authors of this article expected when conceiving the experiment.

viruses - Abstract
Molecular reagents have been developed for virus-specific and simultaneous (virus-non-specific) detection of Grapevine fleck virus (GFkV) and allied viruses, ie. Grapevine asteroid mosaic-associated virus (GAMaV) and Grapevine red globe virus (GRGV). Degenerate primers designed on nucleotide sequences of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RD) and methyltransferase (MTR) domains of the GFkV genome, were able to give amplification products of the expected size from total nucleic acid extracts of: • vines infected with GFkV, GAMaV, and GRGV; • a Californian grapevine accession infected by a marafi-like virus; • Greek grapevine accessions infected by an unidentified agent that induced symptoms reminiscent of those elicited by GAMaV in Vitis rupestris. Degenerate primers designed on the nucleotide sequence of the helicase (HEL) domain of the GFLV genome recognized all the above viruses except for GAMaV and the unidentified Greek viral agent. RD primer set worked well also with crude grapevine cortical scrapings, thus constituting a useful universal reagent for the non-specific molecular identification of GFkV-like viruses in Vitis . The marafi-like virus from California was amplified by all sets of primers, but was recognized only by the GRGV-specific probe, suggesting that it is a likely isolate of GRGV: Likewise, the unidentified virus from Greek vines shared sequence homology with GFkV and allied viruses (GAMaV and GRGV) but exhibited differences relevant enough that call for further investigations to establish its taxonomic position. While GRGV was identified, though with a very low incidence, in some 11 southern Italian grapevine cultivars, no evidence was obtained for infection by GAMaV in any of 50 cultivars analyzed., VITIS - Journal of Grapevine Research, Vol. 40 No. 2 (2001): Vitis
