In this study, a broadband polarization and angle‐independent metamaterial absorber (MA) is investigated in the microwave range. It is made up of a periodic array of multi‐layered metal‐dielectric stepped cones. Since the dimensions of the layers forming the unit cell are different, each layer resonates at different frequencies with overlapping bands. The overall response of the structure, with its extremely wide bandwidth, can be obtained by summing all the overlapping frequency responses corresponding to each layer. In numerical simulation, it is observed that the absorption at normal incidence is above 90% in the frequency range between 9.68 and 17.45 GHz and 95% in the frequency range between 9.91 and 14.86 GHz. The energy harvesting ratios of the structure are also evaluated in a wide spectral band. A power ratio of around 90% is obtained in the same frequency range in accordance with absorption response. A noticeable harvesting efficiency of up to 82% is observed, which represents the energy level converted into electrical energy on resistors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a promising candidate for electronic and optical switching applications in the terahertz frequency range due to the metal to insulator transition (MIT). In this study, the use of VO2 patterned as a metamaterial surface or coupled as a homogeneous layer with a metallic metamaterial surface on top is investigated in terms of performance. High-quality VO2 thin films were deposited on c-cut sapphire substrates by using the dc magnetron sputtering technique. A change in resistivity by a factor of 104 MIT in VO2 was observed allowing to investigate its use as a controllable metamaterial. The layer was patterned using a unique geometry (four-cross shaped) that operates in the THz frequency range. To understand its performance as a tunable THz filter, the four-cross structure fabricated from VO2 is compared to one fabricated from Au on VO2 bare film using UV lithography and ion beam etching techniques. The spectral performances of metamaterials were assessed using THz-Time Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and results were compared with simulations based on CST Microwave Studio. Absence of the resonant effects in the purely developed VO2 device, while clear observation of the MIT behavior shows the strong dependency of the inductive and/or capacitive effects of the four-cross structure on conductivity of the surface metamaterial, which is clearly observable for the Au-based device. One of the challenging riddles that is set by light is: do photons have wavefunctions like other elementary particles do? Wave–particle duality has been a prevailing fact since the beginning of quantum theory thought; in electromagnetism, light is already a kind of undulation, so what about the waves of probability then? Well, Quantum Field Theory (QFT) has a rigorous explanation and supports the idea when they are considered as fields of particles via second quantization; they do have wavefunctions of probability, and it does not have anything to do with the regular oscillations. They can be related to the energy and momentum signatures of harmonic oscillations, resembling an imitation of the behavior of a classical harmonic oscillator, which then has a wavefunction to solve the corresponding time-independent Schrödinger equation. For the last half century, electrical engineering has owned the best out of these implications of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and QFT by engineering better semiconductor techniques with finely miniaturized transistors and composite devices for digital electronics and optoelectronics fields. More importantly, these engineering applications have also greatly evolved into combined fields like quantum computing that have introduced a completely new and extraordinary world to electronics applications. The study takes advantage of the power of QFT to mathematically reveal the bosonic modes (Laguerre–Gaussian) that appear in a sub-diffraction cylindrical aperture. In this way, this may lead to the construction of the techniques and characteristics of room-temperature photonic quantum gates which can isolate photon modes under a diffraction limit. In this work, the concept of mass-energy equivalence in left-handed metamaterials is discussed by following Einstein's box thought experiment. Left-handed metamaterials are artificial composite structures that exhibit unusual properties, especially negative refractive index, in which phase and group velocities are directed oppositely. Equation E = mc2 assumes that, in vacuum, the propagation of an electromagnetic radiation from emitter to receiver is accompanied by the transfer of mass. It was hypothesized previously that if the space between emitter and receiver is medium with a negative refractive index, then radiation transfers the mass not from the emitter to receiver as expected, but rather from the receiver to the emitter due to the opposite directions of phase and group velocities. In this paper, it is shown that even though one radiating atom is taken, the negative mass transferring must be in force. In particular, it means that, if the atom radiates a photon in a medium with negative refractive index, photon transfers the mass not from the atom, but to the atom.
