- Abstract
The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

• How is existential loneliness/isolation described in the existing literature? In what circumstances appear existential loneliness? This systematic review will focus on the phenomenon of existential loneliness or/and existential isolation. Yalom (1980), based on his clinical experience and theorizing, described existential isolation as a feeling of true separation or as a distinction between oneself and the rest of the world. Moustakas (1961) understood this experience as an intolerable emptiness, sadness, and longing, that results from the awareness of one’s fundamental separateness as a human being. He called it existential loneliness. This type of loneliness or isolation can be nullified neither by the presence of others nor by an adequate dealing with feelings and is thus distinct from social loneliness or emotional loneliness. Only recently, however, researchers started to empirically study this phenomenon and currently the terms existential loneliness and existential isolation are used interchangeable, without a clear description or definition. A first group of researchers studied frail older adults, and based on their studies, they use the term ‘existential loneliness’ and describe it as a deep awareness of being fundamentally separated from other people and from the universe (Bolmsjo et al., 2019). A second group of scholars (Helm et al., 2019; Pinel et al., 2017) investigated this phenomenon from a (social) psychological perspective, and predominantly in student populations, describing ‘existential isolation’ as the subjective sense of being alone in one’s experience and the realization that others will never fully understand one’s perspective. With this systematic review, we aim to provide an overview of the definitions and descriptions present in the literature and clarify which aspects/key components are shared or distinct. We aim that this might stimulate achieving a consensus or working definition in order to accelerate empirical research on this topic.

Only few studies scrutinize experience of meaning in life among the older people, vital connections and opportunities to embrace old age are missed because of the lack of research and practical know-how. Further, it is known that moving to a nursing home (NH) has significant impact to experiences and life realities of older people. The transition to NH results arouses numerous losses such as loss of physical and cognitive capacities, loss of functions and roles, and loss of significant others and social relations. From the viewpoint of care givers in NHs, this study scrutinizes phenomenon of meaninglessness and existential loneliness among older people. To provide interdisciplinary approach three sets of data are conducted as follows: -Nurses (study 3) -Pastoral caregivers (study 4) -Psychologists (study 5)

- Abstract
ABSTRACTThis article explores the possibility of time-bound hope for people with severe dementia residing in nursing homes in Finland. We begin with a short introduction to dementia and move on to unraveling the concept of hope and its connection with temporality. Then, by analyzing Lutheran Christian chaplains’ interviews, we present how the temporal dimensions of past, present, and future may be seen and utilized in pastoral care and counseling of people who have lost their own sense of temporality. While doing this, we introduce the concept of past-oral care to capture the basic nature of the chaplains’ work in nursing homes. In the end, we discuss the nature of Christian faith in the light of this new knowledge.

- Abstract
The article provides an image of the beginning, growth, and current situation of healthcare chaplaincy in Finland. The history of the chaplaincy takes us back decades, yet the healthcare chaplaincy as we know it today was formed in the 1960s. The Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland has played a significant role in the development of the chaplaincy. Two contexts exist as chaplaincy locales: Healthcare and the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland. It took decades for healthcare chaplaincy to find its place within and between these two contexts, yet the recent cutbacks in personnel do not promise easy years for the future. Research within this manifold subject is diverse, but new studies are still needed to tackle the challenges of the changing context, work climate, and divergent needs of the patients., Tidsskrift for Praktisk Teologi, Vol. 36 No. 2 (2019): Tidsskrift for Praktisk Teologi

Earlier studies show that experiencing life as meaningful in old age promotes holistic wellbeing and health among older people. As more and more people are living with reduced capacities in their own homes, there is an urgent need to find new ways of promoting holistic wellbeing of the ageing population. Analysing data gathered from existential discussion groups on Service TV (STV), we show how strongly relationality and meaning in life are intertwined for older people. Our findings indicate that respect and support for the autonomy of older people is very important: in order to continue living at home, and prepare for a future with reduced capacities, they need family members for support. Autonomy of ageing becomes relational as choices and wishes are negotiated with family members. Relationships also contribute to loss of meaning. When older people felt that they were not close enough to their family, longed for friends of the same age, were bereaved or widowed, the relational gap caused a violation of meaning. In contrast, participation and activities with peers brought deep joy and connectedness to the lives of the participants. STV provided a new channel for participants to find and form meaningful relationships. Therefore, it is concluded that relationality can be supported by technological means of care. teologia - Abstract
For young people, the occurrence of cancer disrupts the coherence of life and disturbs hopes and dreams for the future. The aim of this research was to discover, with a narrative approach, how religion and worldview impacted the coping process of emerging adults with cancer. The data consists of life tree drawings, autobiographical interviews, blogs, and a letter which were all subjected to narrative analysis. The textual data were analyzed utilizing both a narrative holistic analysis and a thematic perspective. Additionally, the drawings were analyzed by elaborating a visual-narrative analysis. The introductory article represents a meta-analysis of four independent articles. These articles encompass the appearance of religiosity in the coping process; spheres of religion, spirituality, and the secular as manifested in the meaning-making process; and the appearance of hope and despair in the participants future narratives. Since the drawings provided a novel approach to the visual-narrative analysis, one article scrutinizes the analytical process in more detail. Building on the results of the articles, the introductory article seeks to find answers to the following questions: 1.) How does the surrounding context of an individual, and their close relationships, affect the coping process and the experience of meaning? 2.) What are the conditions for the process of coping with cancer to become a meaningful part of the self and life? What is the relation between discovering meaning in cancer and experiencing meaning in life? These questions are scoped with a theoretical discussion about meaning in life within a narrative understanding. It was found that the meaning-making process occurs particularly within the spheres of self/others. For many of the participants, cancer caused a loss of meaning in multiple areas of life. Through the process of meaning-making, an individual can appraise cancer as a meaningful part of life and self. As the changes in the self were situated in the personal context of life, loved ones had a significant role in the coping and meaning-making. Further, the buffered self and important relationships were perceived as a source of meaning in cancer. Furthermore, not all individuals have the need to find meanings in cancer. Therefore, meanings made from the crisis cannot be dealt with as a parallel concept to meaning in life. Even though a meaningful life is constructed from multiple sources of meaning, hope and despair are likely to follow the emerging adults for years to come. Therefore, young people with cancer should be encountered as holistic human beings with individual needs in order to guide them through the emotional effusion that cancer arouses during treatment and in the long term.

As the changes in the self were situate, Syöpään sairastuminen nuorella iällä vaikuttaa kokemukseen elämän tasapainosta sekä tapaan, jolla nuori suhtautuu omaan tulevaisuuteensa. Minuud
