Fiber-reinforced plywood is a composite material that combines the natural strength and rigidity of plywood with the added durability and resilience provided by reinforcing fibers. This type of plywood is designed to offer improved characteristics over standard plywood, including enhanced strength, stiffness, resistance to impact and moisture, and environmental degradation. By integrating reinforcing fibers, such as glass, carbon, or natural fibers (like flax, bamboo, or hemp) into or onto plywood, manufacturers can create a material that is better suited for applications where traditional plywood might fall short or when a decrease in product weight or savings in wood raw material are necessary. This report reviews the current progress in fiber-reinforced plywood in the context of plywood as a construction material to better understand the potential gains in plywood applications, mechanical parameters, and material savings. It is found that a simple and cost-effective procedure of fiber reinforcement allows for substantial improvements in plywood's mechanical properties, typically to the extent of 10-40%. It is suggested that the wider adoption of fiber-reinforced plywood, especially in load- and impact-bearing applications, would greatly contribute to enhanced durability and longevity of the material while also allowing for more sustainable use of raw wood material.

In the view of the German government, the One Health approach is a pioneering compass for inter- and transdisciplinary thinking, networking, and action. To protect the health of humans, animals, plants, and ecosystems, it should always receive attention at all its interfaces and activities. The One Health approach has gained political importance in recent years and is being taken into account in several strategies.This article reports on the current strategies using a One Health approach. These include the German Antibiotic Resistance Strategy, the German Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change, the global initiative Nature for Health, and the international pandemic agreement, which is currently being drafted and in which prevention also plays an important role. The issues of biodiversity loss and climate protection must be placed in a common context that takes into account the interdependencies of the health status of humans, animals, plants, and ecosystems. By involving relevant disciplines at different levels as a matter of course, we can succeed in making a joint contribution to sustainable development, as required by the United Nations' Agenda 2030. This perspective guides Germany's global engagement in global health policy toward greater stability, freedom, diversity, solidarity, and respect for human rights. In the context of healthcare-acquired infections, microbial cross-contamination and the spread of antibiotic resistance, additional passive measures to prevent pathogen carryover are urgently needed. Antimicrobial high-touch surfaces that kill microbes on contact or prevent their adhesion could be considered to mitigate the spread. Here, we demonstrate that photocatalytic nano-ZnO- and nano-ZnO/Ag-based antibacterial surfaces with efficacy of at least a 2.7-log reduction in Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus viability in 2 h can be produced by simple measures using a commercial acrylic topcoat for wood surfaces. We characterize the surfaces taking into account cyclic wear and variable environmental conditions. The light-induced antibacterial and photocatalytic activities of the surfaces are enhanced by short-term cyclic wear, indicating their potential for prolonged effectivity in long-term use. As the produced surfaces are generally more effective at higher relative air humidity and silver-containing surfaces lost their contact-killing properties in dry conditions, it is important to critically evaluate the end-use conditions of materials and surfaces to be tested and select application-appropriate methods for their efficacy assessment.

The reinforcement of plywood is demonstrated by laminating pretensioned basalt fibers between veneer sheets, to fabricate so-called prestressed plywood. Belt type basalt fibers bearing a specific adhesion promoting silane sizing were aligned between veneer sheets with 20 mm spacing and were pretensioned at 150 N. Three-layer plywood samples were prepared and tested for tensile strength at room temperature and at 150 °C. The room temperature tensile tests revealed a 35% increase in tensile strength for prestressed plywood compared to that of the conventional specimen. The reinforcement effect deteriorated at 150 °C but was restored upon cooling to room temperature. The deterioration is attributed to the weakening of bonding between the basalt fibers and phenolic resin matrix at elevated temperatures due to the softening of the resin.

Several studies have shown that problematic smartphone use (PSU) is related to detrimental outcomes, such as worse psychological well-being, higher cognitive distraction, and poorer academic outcomes. In addition, many studies have shown that PSU is strongly related to social media use. Despite this, the relationships between PSU, as well as the frequency of social media use in lectures, and different approaches to learning have not been previously studied. In our study, we hypothesized that both PSU and the frequency of social media use in lectures are negatively correlated with a deep approach to learning (defined as learning for understanding) and positively correlated with a surface approach to learning (defined as superficial learning). The study participants were 415 Estonian university students aged 19-46 years (78.8% females; age M = 23.37, SD = 4.19); the effective sample comprised 405 participants aged 19-46 years (79.0% females; age M = 23.33, SD = 4.21). In addition to basic socio-demographics, participants were asked about the frequency of their social media use in lectures, and they filled out the Estonian Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale and the Estonian Revised Study Process Questionnaire. Bivariate correlation analysis showed that PSU and the frequency of social media use in lectures were negatively correlated with a deep approach to learning and positively correlated with a surface approach to learning. Mediation analysis showed that social media use in lectures completely mediates the relationship between PSU and approaches to learning. These results indicate that the frequency of social media use in lectures might explain the relationships between poorer academic outcomes and PSU., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The changes in optical properties during TiO₂ nanowire orientation in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix under the influence of an electric field are strongly influenced by nanowire (NW) diameter. It was demonstrated for the first time that either positive or negative change in transmittance can be induced by NW alignment parallel to the electric field depending on the NW diameter. These effects can be explained by the interplay between scattering and reflectance. Experimental findings reported could be important for smart window applications for the regulation of visible or even infrared transparency, thus reducing the energy consumption by air conditioning systems in buildings and automobiles in the future.

Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk for inappropriate or potentially harmful prescribing. The aim of this study was to examine whether a multifaceted intervention including the use of a software programme for the estimation of creatinine clearance and recommendation of individual dosage requirements may improve correct dosage adjustment of relevant medications for patients with CKD in primary care., Methods: A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted between January and December 2007 in small primary care practices in Germany. Practices were randomly allocated to intervention or control groups. In each practice, we included patients with known CKD and elderly patients (≥70 years) suffering from hypertension. The practices in the intervention group received interactive training and were provided a software programme to assist with individual dose adjustment. The control group performed usual care. Data were collected at baseline and at 6 months. The outcome measures, analyzed across individual patients, included prescriptions exceeding recommended maximum daily doses, with the primary outcome being prescriptions exceeding recommended standard daily doses by more than 30%., Results: Data from 44 general practitioners and 404 patients are included. The intervention was effective in reducing prescriptions exceeding the maximum daily dose per patients, with a trend in reducing prescriptions exceeding the standard daily dose by more than 30%., Conclusions: A multifaceted intervention including the use of a software program effectively reduced inappropriately high doses of renally excreted medications in patients with CKD in the setting of small primary care practices., Trial Registration: Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN02900734.

The aim of this work was to study the formation process of dielectrophoretic (DEP) carbon nanotube fibers (CNT-fibers) and characterize the fiber properties relevant to their technological applications. The fiber diameter was shown to increase when applied voltage was increased (up to 350 V(pp)) and when retraction speed was decreased (down from 400 µm s(-1)) in accordance with theoretical expectations. This paper represents the first demonstration of the formation of thick DEP CNT-fibers (up to ∼ ∅0.4 mm). This is an intriguing result, as it expands the diversity of possible applications of the fibers and facilitates their characterization by analytical methods that require large quantities of the material. The performance of these thick fibers was as follows: a density of ∼ 0.35 g cm(-3), a tensile strength of ∼ 15 MPa, a Young's modulus of ∼ 1 GPa, and an electrical resistivity of ∼ 70 mΩ cm.

Chronic diseases and multimorbidity are becoming a fundamental challenge for primary care which already requires a very high input of resources. Due to their broad range and continuity, general practices play a major role, but are poorly prepared to succeed in the structured healthcare of chronically ill patients. The reality of care in everyday practice is primarily characterized by the 'tyranny of the urgent', and such a reaction to acute problems leads to noticeable deficits in permanent care. Part one of a two-part article series asks to what extent demographic changes and medical progress are responsible for this development. Meanwhile, a large quantity of empirical evidence indicates that results improve when case management is implemented for chronically ill patients. Though disease management programs are being increasingly established in Germany, many general practices are only poorly prepared for their tangible implementation in everyday routine. The comparison of two case studies shows how the primary care of chronically ill patients might look like in the future. On the basis of both scientific evidence and the globally acknowledged 'Chronic Care Model', part two of the article looks at sustainable strategies and special tools which allow for an adequate care of chronically ill patients in general practice.

Family medicine remains strongly influenced by reactive medicine ('tyranny of the urgent') and the fragmentation of healthcare associated with it. In the first part of the present article the increasing practical and economic relevance of chronic diseases and multimorbidity were analyzed as a fundamental challenge for primary care and family medicine in particular. Part two describes a forward-looking approach to guidelines and special tools which are able to guide and support future healthcare tasks of general practice. Wagner's Chronic Care Model, which was developed on the basis of numerous controlled studies, integrates empirical results, theoretical ideas and real experience within a comprehensive concept for the treatment of chronic diseases. The model focuses on the'productive interaction' between an active patient and a proactive practice team. The various elements of the model help to better understand healthcare in general practices, for example by establishing reminder and recall systems by means of a structured reorganization, through patient registers, the implementation of consultation hours for chronically ill patients as well as patient training. 'Case management' is essential to the success of structured care. Taking care of patients with major depression as an example, it is demonstrated how case management through practice assistants in general practices enables the individual needs of chronically ill patients to be better taken into account. The professionalism of the practice team with new roles and task sharing as well as the implementation of modern strategies for the care of chronically ill patients provide a new chance and a sharpened profile for general practices of the future.

We demonstrate that an optically transparent and electrically conductive antimon-doped tin-oxide tip that is prepared in a sol-gel process can be used as a probe for scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), yielding atomic vertical and nanometre lateral resolution. Emission of visible light from the tunnelling junction between gold particles and the tip is observed for bias voltages above 7 V. In contrast to the metallic tips generally used in STM, this tip does not significantly perturb the local optical response. Therefore, the tunnelling induced light can be used to map the optical near-field of surface structures with the tunnel gap acting as highly localised light source for the investigation of near-field enhancement in complex metal structures.

Glucose oxidase (E.C 1.1.3.4) immobilized onto activated surface of mica was analyzed by enzymatic kinetics and visualization with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The activity of the immobilized enzyme decreased with the decrease of concentration of gamma-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane used for the first step of activation of mica, while AFM analysis showed similar homogeneous filling of the surface with the enzyme. The comparison of enzyme activity with its surface filling revealed that there has to be additional vertical structures, which cannot be visualized by the methods of AFM. The simultaneous decrease of the silanizing agent and the concentration of the enzyme led to molecular resolution for the enzyme on the surface of mica. This allows to propose the described method also for analyzing other surfaces of solid materials with coupled biomolecules.

Four well differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma cell lines from German patients have been established from primary tumors (St 23132, St 3051) and lymph node metastases (St 2474, St 2957). The tumor cells were isolated by enzymatic or mechanical treatment. All four lines grew as solid tumors in nude mice and formed colonies in soft agar. The doubling time of the cells in culture was 25-32 h. Further characteristics of the lines were a considerable chromosomal aneuploidy, (the chromosomal numbers varying from 30-109 with many numerical and structural abnormalities), a stable keratin expression (Ck 8, 18, 19), the expression and secretion of CEA and CA-19-9 and the overexpression of c-myc. The four stomach cancer cell lines described here are not only a useful addition to the small number of existing lines, but also represent ideal tools for studying tumorigenicity of human stomach cancers in vitro and in vivo.
