Abstract Background and objectives: In this research, the formation of chitosan-TiO2 nanocomposite and its antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus was investigated Material and Methods: to study the results, we used Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transition electron microscopy (TEM) images, infrared (IR) spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible. Optical Density (OD) was also measured by spectrophotometer then the effect of this nano composite, in the vicinity of aforementioned bacteria, on the sterilized gauze in solid Muller Hinton Agar and TSB liquid mediums was assessed Results: The mentioned nanocomposite was formed with the composition of 4mg/ml Chitosan concentration and 2% titanium dioxide concentration. Finally, we observed that this nanocomposite near 100% could prevent bacterial growth and in the presence of this material did not grow any bacteria. Conclusion: chitosan-Tio2 Nanocomposite can be useful on culture medium and sterilized gauze to control pathologic bacteria. The present study aims to examine the vibrational behavior of buckled Functionally Graded (FG) circular plates under clamped and simply-supported edge conditions. To this end, von Kffarmffan assumptions were taken into account to incorporate geometric nonlinearity into Kirchho plate theory and derive the nonlinear governing equations of motion using Hamilton's principle. Critical buckling load and linear natural frequencies were first calculated using Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method. Next, the postbuckling characteristics of the circular plate were identified through direct solving of the nonlinear governing equations. Several comparative studies have confirmed the reliability of the proposed model. Finally, the fundamental natural frequency of the plate was evaluated for pre- and postbuckled configurations. This study also evaluated the effects of material property and boundary conditions on the static bifurcation diagram and natural frequency of the initial undeffected and buckled plate. According to the findings, the trend of the fundamental natural frequency changes with the applied radial load around the pre-buckled configuration differed from the one around the buckled configuration. Web 2.0 tools and emerging technologies offer learners an abundance of information and resources. This brings more flexibility and choices for learners to better control their learning and benefit from the various available learning materials in different forms. This has resulted in new learning practices and environments in higher education. Such technology-mediated learning environments which are more open, flexible, and student-centered or, as it is called, Personal Learning Environments (PLE). This paper describes PLE as a set of learner-defined tools and services in the ecology of Web 2.0 used by participants in three open online courses. The aim of the study was to find out how participants create and utilize their PLEs for searching, aggregating, creating and sharing content and learning resources, and being engaged in online learning networks and communities. A particular interest was to explore how serendipity as a by-product of these open online encounters can occur. Data were gathered through an online survey, semi-structured interviews, and online artifacts. The findings suggest the serendipitous nature of content aggregation in a PLE and provide evidence of serendipity as a valuable and unexpected source for learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) play a fundamental role in angiogenesis. Herein, we introduce digital holographic microscopy (DHM) for the 3D quantitative morphological analysis of HUVECs in extracellular matrix (ECM)-based biomaterials as an angiogenesis model. The combination of volumetric information from DHM and the physicochemical and cytobiocompatibility data provided by fluorescence microscopy and cytology offers a comprehensive understanding of the angiogenesis-related parameters of HUVECs within the ECM. DHM enables label-free, non-contact, and non-invasive 3D monitoring of living samples in real time, in a quantitative manner. In this study, the human amniotic membrane (HAM) is decellularized, pulverized, and combined with sodium alginate hydrogel to provide an in vitro substrate for modeling HUVEC angiogenesis. Our results demonstrate that modifying alginate hydrogel with HAM enhances its biofunctionality due to the presence of ECM components. Hyperactivity in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) leads to restlessness and impulse-control impairments. Nevertheless, the relation between ADHD symptoms and brain regions interactions remains unclear. We focused on dynamic causal modeling to study the effective connectivity in a fully connected network comprised of four regions of the default mode network (DMN) (linked to response control behaviors) and four other regions with previously-reported structural alterations due to ADHD. Then, via the parametric empirical Bayes analysis, the most significant connections, with the highest correlation to the covariates ADHD/control, age, and sex were extracted. Our results demonstrated a positive correlation between ADHD and effective connectivity between the right cerebellum and three DMN nodes (intrinsically inhibitory connections). Therefore, an increase in the effective connectivity leads to more inhibition imposition from the right cerebellum to DMN that reduces this network activation. The lower DMN activity makes leaving the resting-state easier, which may be involved in the restlessness symptom. Furthermore, our results indicated a negative correlation between age and these connections. We showed that the difference between the average of effective connectivities of ADHD and control groups in the age-range of 7-11 years disappeared after 14 years-old. Microfluidic systems are capable of producing microgels with a monodisperse size distribution and a spherical shape due to their laminar flow and superior flow. A significant challenge in producing these drug-carrying microgels is simultaneous drug loading into microgels. Various factors such as the type of polymer, the type of drug, the volume ratio of the drug to the polymer, and the geometry of the microfluidic system used to generate microgels can effectively address these challenges. The overall goal of this study was to produce mono-disperse drug-carrying microgels capable of controlled drug release. To achieve this goal, this study used a stream-focused microfluidic chip containing a coating current to prevent chip clogging. Alginate oxide was synthesized with a 30 % oxidation percentage. Alginate oxide, gelatin, and compositions of them with volume ratios of 50-50, 70-30, and 30-70, by determining their appropriate weight percentage, were used for the controlled release of letrozole. The properties of the produced microgels were measured through various tests such as drug release test, loading percentage, SEM, FTIR, swelling ratio, and dimensional stability. It was found that microgels made of a combination of alginate oxide-gelatin with volume ratios of 70-30 had a good swelling ratio and structural stability. The drug loading percentages for alginate, alginate oxide, and alginate oxide-gelatin with volume ratios of 50-50 and 30-70, respectively, were 56 %, 68 %, and 66 %, 61 % and the alginate oxide-gelatin with a volume ratio of 70-30 compared to other samples had over 70 % drug loading percentages. Furthermore, samples of alginate, alginate oxide, and alginate oxide-gelatin with volume ratios of 50-50 and 30-70 had 94 %, 63 %, 56 %, and 68 % drug release in 13 days, respectively. However, alginate oxide-gelatin with a volume ratio of 70-30 had a release rate of about 50 % in 13 days, which is a more controlled release for letrozole compared to the volume ratios of 50-50 and 30-70. Examining the drug release profile, it was concluded that drug release follows the Higuchi model and therefore follows Fick's first law of diffusion. It can be concluded that the combination of alginate oxide-gelatin produces more suitable microgels than alginate and alginate oxide for the controlled-release of letrozole. The purpose of this research was to design a fully automated centrifugal microfluidic system (Lab-on-a-Disk) for isolating cell free fetal DNAs (cffDNAs) from whole blood. To achieve this goal, magnetic silica beads were used, such that after attaching cffDNA to them, they were transferred between chambers by using external fixed magnets. All the standards and required steps for cffDNA extraction including plasma separation, adding proteinase K, lysis buffer, binding buffer, washing buffer, and elution buffer were considered in this designed disk. To evaluate the function of the disk, the collected samples were tested from several aspects. First, the purity of extracted plasma from whole blood was investigated which included hemoglobin test, hemocytometer, etc. This disk could extract 1.3 mL pure plasma from 3 mL blood with 45% hematocrit. The results of the extracted plasma showed 99% purity. Finally, the cffDNAs were examined by using a male fetal gender identification kit and real-time PCR machine. The results indicated the correct function of the disk in extracting cffDNAs in samples of 10 Landa from cycle 34 onwards. Despite several progressions in the biofabrication of large-scale engineered tissues, direct biopri nting of perfusable three-dimensional (3D) vasculature remained unaddressed. Developing a feasible method to generate cell-laden thick tissue with an effective vasculature network to deliver oxygen and nutrient is crucial for preventing the formation of necrotic spots and tissue death. In this study, we developed a novel technique to directly bioprint 3D cell-laden prevascularized construct. We developed a novel bioink by mixing decellularized human amniotic membrane (dHAM) and alginate (Alg) in various ratios. The bioink with encapsulated human vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and a crosslinker, CaCl 2, were extruded via sheath and core nozzle respectively to directly bioprint a perfusable 3D vasculature construct. The various concentration of bioink was assessed from several aspects like biocompatibility, porosity, swelling, degradation, and mechanical characteristics, and accordingly, optimized concentration was selected (Alg 4 %w/v - dHAM 0.6 %w/v). Then, the crosslinked bioink without microchannel and the 3D bioprinted construct with various microchannel distances (0, 1.5 mm, 3 mm) were compared. The 3D bioprinted construct with a 1.5 mm microchannels distance demonstrated superiority owing to its 492 ± 18.8 % cell viability within 14 days, excellent tubulogenesis, remarkable expression of VEGFR-2 which play a crucial role in endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and more importantly angiogenesis, and neovascularization. This perfusable bioprinted construct also possess appropriate mechanical stability (32.35 ± 5 kPa Young's modulus) for soft tissue. Patients with acute burns are more vulnerable to COVID-19 because of physiologically weak immune systems. This study aimed to assess and compare individual characteristics, clinical features, and clinical outcomes of acute burn among COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients. A retrospective study, with data collected from 611 acute burn patients with or without a COVID-19 diagnosis referred to a burn centre in Iran. Data were collected from April 2020 to 2021. The mean age of acute burns patients with COVID-19 was higher compared with acute burns patients with non-COVID-19 (47.82 vs. 32.59 years, P < .001). Acute burns occurred more frequently in COVID-19 patients with comorbidities compared with non-COVID-19 patients (48.72% vs. 26.92%, P = .003). 58.97% of COVID-19 patients and 55.42% of non-COVID-19 patients had grade II & III and II burns, respectively (P < .001). The mean total body surface area of the burn was higher in COVID-19 patients compared with non-COVID-19 patients (32.69% vs. 16.22%, P < .001). Hospitalisation in the intensive care unit (ICU) was higher in COVID-19 patients than in non-COVID-19 patients (76.92% vs. 15.73%, P < .001). Length of stay in hospital and ICU, the cost of hospitalisation, and waiting time for the operating room was higher in COVID-19 patients compared with non-COVID-19 patients (15.30 vs. 3.88 days, P < .001; 9.61 vs. 0.75 days, P < .001; 30 430 628.717 vs. 10 219 192.44 rials, P = .011; 0.84 vs. 0.24 min, P < .001, respectively). Intubation and mortality in-hospital were higher in COVID-19 patients compared with non-COVID-19 patients (41.02% vs. 6.99%, P < .001; 35.90% vs. 6.12%, P < .001, respectively). Due to the increasing resistance to common medicinal compounds, the use of medicinal plants has received special attention. Therefore, the current survey was designed to study the antileishmanial effects of Nectaroscordum koelzi Trautv. methanolic extract against Leishmania major. In this study, after preparing the methanolic extract of N. koelzi , its effect on the amastigotes of L. major and triggering the nitric oxide (NO) were measured. Then, the in vivo effect of the methanol extract on cutaneous leishmaniasis in mice was evaluated. The best anti-amastigote effect was for the methanol extract of N. koelzi along with meglumine antimony with 50% inhibitory concentrations value of 17.4 μg/ml ( p  < 0.001). The 50% cytotoxic concentrations values of methanol extract, meglumine antimoniate, and methanol extract + meglumine antimoniate were 596.3, 784.6, and 296.4 µg/ml, respectively. Macrophages treated with the methanolic extract markedly ( p  < 0.001) induced the release of nitric oxide. After 28 days of treatment, lesions were completely ( p  < 0.001) healed in mice treated with the methanolic extract (100 mg/kg) + meglumine antimoniate (25 mg/kg). N. koelzi methanolic extract mainly in combination with meglumine antimoniate showed favorable antileishmanial effects on L. major , concluding that the methanolic extract of N. koelzi can be used for the production of new leishmanicidal agents agaist cutaneous leishmaniasis. Purpose: Mixing of liquids is a critical unit operation in the biopharmaceutical drug product manufacturing. It commonly consists of mixing miscible liquids to dilute bulk drug substance (DS) or pool multiple lots of drug substance. In the past, at-scale mixing studies have been conducted to determine the mixing parameters, namely mixing speed, and mixing time. At-scale studies have historically been utilized to overcome the challenges associated with geometric dissimilarity of mixing systems found when scaling up. In addition, such studies are quite costly, as they often use actual DS to overcome a lack of representativeness associated with simple salt trace models often employed. As a result, there is a significant need for alternative cost-effective methods that can predict mixing parameters with close agreement to actual experiments and operations., Method: At-scale mixing experiments were conducted using full-sized tanks and surrogate solutions. Several computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation methods were conducted and compared with the experiments to determine the most reliable computational techniques., Results: The experiments demonstrate that surrogate solutions can be used reliably to determine mixing parameters in at-scale studies instead of the valuable drug products. Studying different CFD methods also showed that transient simulations that use a large eddy simulation (LES) viscous model and a sliding mesh can correctly predict the mixing parameters., Conclusion: Results of this study establish a practical and reliable methodology to perform mixing studies for miscible liquids with different kinematic viscosities. Microfluidic systems with the ability to mimic the female reproductive tract (FRT) and sperm features have emerged as promising methods to separate sperm with higher quality for the assistant reproductive technology. Thereby, we designed and fabricated a microfluidic system based on FRT features with a focus on rheotaxis and thigmotaxis for passive sperm separation. In this regard, four various geometries (linear, square, zigzag, and sinusoidal) were designed, and the effect of rheotaxis and thigmotaxis were investigated. Although separated sperm in all microchannels were 100% motile, non-linear geometries were more effective than linear geometry in the term of separating the progressive sperm with high quality. In the presence of upstream flow, periodical changes in the slope of walls (in non-linear geometries) give rise to the periodical facing sperm with a high flow rate in the middle of microchannels, which was a reason for the high quality of separated sperm. However, because of sharp corners in the square and zigzag microchannels that create dead zones with a lack of upstream flow, which is noticeable via simulation results, these geometries have obstacles against sperm swimming toward the outlet, which was proved by image analysis. The sinusoidal geometry showed the highest enhancement level of the designed geometries compared to the linear geometry. Separated sperm exhibited 34.7% normal morphology, 100% motility, and 100% viability in the sinusoidal geometry. Therefore, the periodic change in the position of sperm from one wall to another wall can be a strategy for separating sperm with high quality., Graphical Abstract: In the present study, we used a microfluidic system for studying the combined effects of thigmotaxis and rheotaxis for sperm separation process to achieve the successful Assisted reproductive technology (ART). The designed PDMS-based microfluidic system had four various geometries, including linear, square, zigzag, and sinusoidal. The functionality of separated sperm was evaluated by sperm tracking (ImageJ), motility assay (CASA software), and morphology assay (Papanicolaou ultrafast staining). Probing various geometries revealed 100% motility. In non-linear geometries, sperm's periodic detachment from the walls gave rise to the periodic interaction with the high flow velocity in the center of the channel, resulting in the separation of high-quality sperm with progressive motility. The collected data proved the influence of thigmotaxis on the quality of separated sperm. Aim: The study aimed to develop a bicomponent bioactive hydrogel formed in situ and enriched with an extract of platelet-rich fibrin (PRFe) and to assess its potential for use in pulp-dentine complex tissue engineering via cell homing., Methodology: A bicomponent hydrogel based on photo-activated naturally derived polymers, methacrylated chitosan (ChitMA) and methacrylated collagen (ColMA), plus PRFe was fabricated. The optimized formulation of PRFe-loaded bicomponent hydrogel was determined by analysing the mechanical strength, swelling ratio and cell viability simultaneously. The physical, mechanical, rheological and morphological properties of the optimal hydrogel with and without PRFe were determined. Additionally, MTT, phalloidin/DAPI and live/dead assays were carried out to compare the viability, cytoskeletal morphology and migration ability of stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP) within the developed hydrogels with and without PRFe, respectively. To further investigate the effect of PRFe on the differentiation of encapsulated SCAP, alizarin red S staining, RT-PCR analysis and immunohistochemical detection were performed. Statistical significance was established at p <  .05., Results: The optimized formulation of PRFe-loaded bicomponent hydrogel can be rapidly photocrosslinked using available dental light curing units. Compared to bicomponent hydrogels without PRFe, the PRFe-loaded hydrogel exhibited greater viscoelasticity and higher cytocompatibility to SCAP. Moreover, it promoted cell proliferation and migration in vitro. It also supported the odontogenic differentiation of SCAP as evidenced by its promotion of biomineralization and upregulating the gene expression for ALP, COL I, DSPP and DMP1 as well as facilitated angiogenesis by enhancing VEGFA gene expression., Conclusions: The new PRFe-loaded ChitMA/ColMA hydrogel developed within this study fulfils the criteria of injectability, cytocompatibility, chemoattractivity and bioactivity to promote odontogenic differentiation, which are fundamental requirements for scaffolds used in pulp-dentine complex regeneration via cell-homing approaches., (© 2022 British Endodontic Society. Due to the expansion of point-of-care devices, proposing a convenient and efficient method for blood-plasma separation would help with the use of point-of-care devices. Commercial microfluidic chips are only able to separate a limited amount of plasma, and the majority of these chips need an active valve system, which leads to increase manufacturing cost and complexity. In this research study, we designed a centrifugal microfluidic disk with a passive valve for ultra-accurate and efficient blood-plasma separation on a large scale (2-3 mL). The disk contained a separator gel, which, after applying the centrifugal force, separated the plasma and red blood cells. The passive valve worked based on the inertial force and was able to transfer more than 90% of the separated plasma to the next chamber. The results demonstrated that the separated plasma was 99.992% pure. This study compared the efficiency of the disk containing separating gel with the common lab-on-a-disk design for plasma separation. A comparison of the results showed that although the common lab-on-a-disk design could separate almost pure plasma as the disk contained separator gel, it could only transfer 60% of plasma to the next chamber.

Besides the conventional fiber production methods, microfluidics has emerged as a promising approach for the engineered spinning of fibrous materials and offers excellent potential for fiber manufacturing in a controlled and straightforward manner. This method facilitates low-speed prototype synthesis of fibers for diverse applications while providing superior control over reaction conditions, efficient use of precursor solutions, reagent mixing, and process parameters. This article reviews recent advances in microfluidic technology for the fabrication of fibrous materials with different morphologies and a variety of properties aimed at various applications. First, the basic principles, as well as the latest developments and achievements of microfluidic-based techniques for fiber production, are introduced. Specifically, microfluidic platforms made of glass, polymers, and/or metals, including but not limited to microfluidic chips, capillary-based devices, and three-dimensional printed devices are summarized. Then, fiber production from various materials, such as alginate, gelatin, silk, collagen, and chitosan, using different microfluidic platforms with a broad range of cross-linking agents and mechanisms is described. Therefore, microfluidic spun fibers with diverse diameters ranging from submicrometer scales to hundreds of micrometers and structures, such as cylindrical, hollow, grooved, flat, core-shell, heterogeneous, helical, and peapod-like morphologies, with tunable sizes and mechanical properties are discussed in detail. Subsequently, the practical applications of microfluidic spun fibers are highlighted in sensors for biomedical or optical purposes, scaffolds for culture or encapsulation of cells in tissue engineering, and drug delivery. This research was conducted to determine the concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Ni) in the sediments as well as the gill and muscle tissue of Siganus javus and two species of algae (Padina australis and Sargassum vulgare) collected from the Persian Gulf coasts of Bushehr province, which were studied using standard laboratory methods. The general form and trend of metal uptake at different stations in the gill and muscle tissue was Cu > Ni > Pb. The results of the study of metal uptake in both algae showed that the uptake of all three metals was higher in Padina species (Pb ˂ Cu ˂ Ni). The estimated daily intake (EDI), estimated weekly intake (EWI), allowable fish consumption rate limit (CR lim ), and the target hazard quotients (THQ) for the consumption of this fish were also calculated. It was found that the concentration of heavy metals in the edible parts of the fish did not exceed the permissible limits proposed by the WHO, MAFF, JECFA, and NHMRC for human consumption, but the Ni concentration was higher than standard. Although medical advancements have successfully helped a lot of couples with their infertility by assisted reproductive technologies (ART), sperm selection, a crucial stage in ART, has remained challenging. Therefore, we aimed to investigate novel sperm separation methods, specifically microfluidic systems, as they do sperm selection based on sperm and/or the female reproductive tract (FRT) features without inflicting any damage to the selected sperm during the process. In this review, after an exhaustive studying of FRT features, which can implement by microfluidics devices, the focus was centered on sperm selection and investigation devices. Despite all the advancements in tissue engineering, one of the unsolved challenges is the mass transfer limitation. Therefore, the subject of pre-vascularization in the engineered tissues gets more attention to avoid necrotic core formation. In this study, we considered a design for interconnected channels with a muscle tissue-like structure, in silico and in vitro. A sequence of simple steps make it possible for us to use the same material, gelatin, as both a sacrificial material and one of the main components of the scaffold simultaneously. We defined a new approach to quantify the repeatability of a new combination of hydrogels (Partially Oxidized Alginate + Gelatin) for extrusion-based bioprinting. Additionally, the mechanical properties, hydrogel porosity, degradation time, and swelling ratio were also evaluated. Based on all these test results, the scaffold with the optimum properties was chosen for the bioprinting of adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) in the scaffolds with and without the channels. This bioprinted scaffold with microchannels showed promising mimicry of the microenvironment, leading to higher survival and proliferation rates of the cells by up to 250%. Background: Today, a suitable vaccine has not yet been discovered to prevent Toxoplasma gondii infection. Therefore, prophylaxis can be suggested as the preferred approach to prevent toxoplasmosis. This study aims to evaluate the prophylactic effects of synthesized zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) using Lavandula angustifolia Vera., by microwave method on chronic toxoplasmosis in mice., Methods: BALB/c Mice orally administrated with ZnNPs the doses of 32.5, 75, 150 mg/kg/day for two weeks. On the 15th day, the mice were intraperitoneally infected with the Tehran strain of T. gondii (25 tissue cysts). The mean diameter and the numbers of brain tissue cysts, as well as the mRNA levels of inducible nitric oxide synthesize (iNOs), and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in mice of each experimental group were evaluated., Results: The synthesized ZnNPs represent a spherical form with a size ranging from 30 to 80 nm. The results revealed that oral administration of Zn NPs at the doses of 32.5 (p < 0.001) and 75 mg/kg/day (p < 0.001) for 14 days significantly reduced the mean number and diameter of the brain tissue cysts in tested mice. No T. gondii tissue cyst was observed after oral administration of Zn NPs at the doses of 150 mg/kg. Based on the results of Real-time PCR analysis, the expression level of IFN-γ and iNOs was significantly increased (p < 0.001) in mice treated with 32.5, 75, 150 mg/kg/day for two weeks., Conclusion: The obtained findings of the current investigation exhibit the significant prophylactic effects of ZnNPs against chronic toxoplasmosis in mice; so that oral administration of ZnNPs the doses 32.5, 75, 150 mg/kg reduced the parasite load and even completely controlled the infection in mice. The results show that the ZnNPs had strengthened the innate immune system which could be the reason for its strong prophylactic effects.
