Objective(s): The objective of this article is to identify the effectiveness of an instructional program toward mothers' knowledge of child vaccines as well as find the relationship between mothers' knowledge of child vaccines and their demographic data. Methodology: A quasi-experimental study is conducted for the period of October 4th, 2021 to April 19th, 2022. A nonprobability "purposive" sample of (60) mothers (30) for the control group and (30) for the study group was used in the study. Six basic health care centers in the Iraqi city of Al-Najaf were chosen for the sampling. The data is collected using a self-report questionnaire with two parts: the first part deals with the mothers' demographic information and previous history, and the second portion deals with the mothers' knowledge of child vaccines. Results: According to the findings, there is a significantly difference in mothers' knowledge about child immunizations between the study group's post-test knowledge score Except for the educational and occupational status, where there is a statistically significant association. In the control group, there is no significant relationship between mothers' knowledge and demographic characteristics such as age, education, or socio-economic status.

Visual sensitivity, probed through perceptual detectability of very brief visual stimuli, is strongly impaired around the time of rapid eye movements. This robust perceptual phenomenon, called saccadic suppression, is frequently attributed to active suppressive signals that are directly derived from eye movement commands. Here we show instead that visual-only mechanisms, activated by saccade-induced image shifts, can account for all perceptual properties of saccadic suppression that we have investigated. Such mechanisms start at, but are not necessarily exclusive to, the very first stage of visual processing in the brain, the retina. Critically, neural suppression originating in the retina outlasts perceptual suppression around the time of saccades, suggesting that extra-retinal movement-related signals, rather than causing suppression, may instead act to shorten it. Our results demonstrate a far-reaching contribution of visual processing mechanisms to perceptual saccadic suppression, starting in the retina, without the need to invoke explicit motor-based suppression commands., Nature Communications, 11 (1), ISSN:2041-1723

Visual perception remains stable across saccadic eye movements, despite the concurrent strongly disruptive visual flow. This stability is partially associated with a reduction in visual sensitivity, known as saccadic suppression, which already starts in the retina with reduced ganglion cell sensitivity. However, the retinal circuit mechanisms giving rise to such suppression remain unknown. Here, we describe these mechanisms using electrophysiology in mouse, pig, and macaque retina, 2-photon calcium imaging, computational modeling, and human psychophysics. We find that sequential stimuli, like those that naturally occur during saccades, trigger three independent suppressive mechanisms in the retina. The main mechanism is triggered by contrast-reversing sequential stimuli and originates within the receptive field center of ganglion cells. It does not involve inhibition or other known suppressive mechanisms like saturation or adaptation. Instead, it relies on temporal filtering of the inherently slow response of cone photoreceptors coupled with downstream nonlinearities. Two further mechanisms of suppression are present predominantly in ON ganglion cells and originate in the receptive field surround, highlighting another disparity between ON and OFF ganglion cells. Across saccades, perceptual detectability of brief visual stimuli is strongly diminished. We recently observed that this perceptual suppression phenomenon is jumpstarted in the retina, suggesting that the phenomenon might be significantly more visual in nature than normally acknowledged. Here, we explicitly compared saccadic suppression strength when saccades were made across a uniform image of constant luminance versus when saccades were made across image patches of different luminance, width, and trans-saccadic luminance polarity. We measured perceptual contrast thresholds of human subjects for brief peri-saccadic flashes of positive (luminance increments) or negative (luminance decrements) polarity. Perceptual thresholds were >6-7 times higher when saccades translated a luminance stripe or edge across the retina than when saccades were made over a completely uniform image patch. Critically, both background luminance and flash luminance polarity relative to the background strongly modulated peri-saccadic contrast thresholds. In addition, all of these very same visual dependencies also occurred in the absence of any saccades, but with qualitatively similar rapid translations of image patches across the retina. Our results support the notion that perceptual saccadic suppression may be fundamentally a visual phenomenon, and they motivate neurophysiological and theoretical investigations on the role of saccadic eye movement commands in modulating its properties.

Subjective visual experience builds on sensory encoding of light reflected by different objects in our environment. Most retinal ganglion cells encode changes in light intensity, quantified as contrast, rather than the absolute intensity. Mathematically, contrast is often defined as a relative change in light intensity. Activity in the visual system and perceptual responses are usually explained with such definitions of contrast. Here, for the first time, we explicitly explored how contrast is actually represented in the visual system. Using mouse retina electrophysiology, we show that response strength of OFF retinal ganglion cells does not represent relative, but absolute changes in light intensity. ON RGC response strength is governed by a combination of absolute and relative change in light intensity. This is true for a wide range of ambient light levels, at least from scotopic to high mesopic regimes. Consequently, light decrements and increments are represented asymmetrically in the retina, which may explain the asymmetries in responses to negative and positive contrast observed throughout the visual system. These findings may help to more thoroughly design and interpret vision science studies where responses are driven by contrast of the visual stimuli.

The rising global warming concerns and explosive degradation of the environment requires the mainstream utilization of alternative fuels, such as hydroxy gas (HHO) which presents itself as a viable substitute for extracting the benefits of hydrogen. Therefore, an experimental study of the performance and emission characteristics of alternative fuels in contrast to conventional gasoline was undertaken. For experimentation, a spark ignition engine was run on a multitude of fuels comprising of gasoline, Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and hybrid blend of HHO with LPG. The engine was operated at 60% open throttle with engine speed ranging from 1600 rpm to 3400 rpm. Simultaneously, the corresponding performance parameters including brake specific fuel consumption, brake power and brake thermal efficiency were investigated. Emission levels of CO, CO2, HC and NOx were quantified in the specified speed range. To check the suitability of the acquired experimental data, it was subjected to a Weibull distribution fit. Enhanced performance efficiency and reduced emissions were observed with the combustion of the hybrid mixture of LPG with HHO in comparison to LPG: on average, brake power increased by 7% while the brake specific fuel consumption reduced by 15%. On the other hand, emissions relative to LPG decreased by 21%, 9% and 21.8% in cases of CO, CO2, and unburned hydrocarbons respectively. Incorporating alternative fuels would not only imply reduced dependency on conventional fuels but would also contribute to their sustainability for future generations. Simultaneously, the decrease in harmful environmental pollutants would help to mitigate and combat the threats of climate change.

Microsaccades occur during gaze fixation to correct for miniscule foveal motor errors. The mechanisms governing such fine oculomotor control are still not fully understood. In this study, we explored microsaccade control by analyzing the impacts of transient visual stimuli on these movements’ kinematics. We found that such kinematics can be altered in systematic ways depending on the timing and spatial geometry of visual transients relative to the movement goals. In two male rhesus macaques, we presented peripheral or foveal visual transients during an otherwise stable period of fixation. Such transients resulted in well-known reductions in microsaccade frequency, and our goal was to investigate whether microsaccade kinematics would additionally be altered. We found that both microsaccade timing and amplitude were modulated by the visual transients, and in predictable manners by these transients’ timing and geometry. Interestingly, modulations in the peak velocity of the same movements were not proportional to the observed amplitude modulations, suggesting a violation of the well-known “main sequence” relationship between microsaccade amplitude and peak velocity. We hypothesize that visual stimulation during movement preparation affects not only the saccadic “Go” system driving eye movements but also a “Pause” system inhibiting them. If the Pause system happens to be already turned off despite the new visual input, movement kinematics can be altered by the readout of additional visually evoked spikes in the Go system coding for the flash location. Our results demonstrate precise control over individual microscopic saccades and provide testable hypotheses for mechanisms of saccade control in general. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Microsaccadic eye movements play an important role in several aspects of visual perception and cognition. However, the mechanisms for microsaccade control are still not fully understood. We found that microsaccade kinematics can be altered in a systematic manner by visual transients, revealing a previously unappreciated and exquisite level of control by the oculomotor system of even the smallest saccades. Our results suggest precise temporal interaction between visual, motor, and inhibitory signals in microsaccade control.

Rod and cone photoreceptors support vision across large light intensity ranges. Rods, active under dim illumination, are thought to saturate at higher (photopic) irradiances. The extent of rod saturation is not well defined; some studies report rod activity well into the photopic range. Using electrophysiological recordings from retina and dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of cone-deficient and visually intact mice, we describe stimulus and physiological factors that influence photopic rod-driven responses. We find that rod contrast sensitivity is initially strongly reduced at high irradiances, but progressively recovers to allow responses to moderate contrast stimuli. Surprisingly, rods recover faster at higher light levels. A model of rod phototransduction suggests that phototransduction gain adjustments and bleaching adaptation underlie rod recovery. Consistently, exogenous chromophore reduces rod responses at bright background. Thus, bleaching adaptation renders mouse rods responsive to modest contrast at any irradiance. Paradoxically, raising irradiance across the photopic range increases the robustness of rod responses., Rod photoreceptors are thought to be saturated under bright light. Here, the authors describe the physiological parameters that mediate response saturation of rod photoreceptors in mouse retina, and show that rods can drive visual responses in photopic conditions.

Visual object recognition is just one of the many applications of camera-equipped smartphones. The ability to recognise objects through photos taken with wearable and handheld cameras is already possible through some of the larger internet search providers; yet, there is little rigorous analysis of the quality of search results, particularly where there is great disparity in image quality. This has motivated us to develop the Small Hand-held Object Recognition Test (SHORT). This includes a dataset that is suitable for recognising hand-held objects from either snapshots or videos acquired using hand-held or wearable cameras. SHORT provides a collection of images and ground truth that help evaluate the different factors that affect recognition performance. At its present state, the dataset is comprised of a set of high quality training images and a large set of nearly 135,000 smartphone-captured test images of 30 grocery products. In this paper, we will discuss some open challenges in the visual object recognition of objects that are being held by users. We evaluate the performance of a number of popular object recognition algorithms, with differing levels of complexity, when tested against SHORT.

The ubiquity of smartphones with high quality cameras and fast network connections will spawn many new applications. One of these is visual object recognition, an emerging smartphone feature which could play roles in high-street shopping, price comparisons and similar uses. There are also potential roles for such technology in assistive applications, such as for people who have visual impairment. We introduce the Small Hand-held Object Recognition Test (SHORT), a new dataset that aims to benchmark the performance of algorithms for recognising hand-held objects from either snapshots or videos acquired using hand-held or wearable cameras. We show that SHORT provides a set of images and ground truth that help assess the many factors that affect recognition performance. SHORT is designed to be focused on the assistive systems context, though it can provide useful information on more general aspects of recognition performance for hand-held objects. We describe the present state of the dataset, comprised of a small set of high quality training images and a large set of nearly 135,000 smartphone-captured test images of 30 grocery products. In this version, SHORT addresses another context not covered by traditional datasets, in which high quality catalogue images are being compared with variable quality user-captured images; this makes the matching more challenging in SHORT than other datasets. Images of similar quality are often not present in “database” and “query” datasets, a situation being increasingly encountered in commercial applications. Finally, we compare the results of popular object recognition algorithms of different levels of complexity when tested against SHORT and discuss the research challenges arising from the particularities of visual object recognition from objects that are being held by users.

Master's thesis in Petroleum engineering With aging oil fields, the Norwegian petroleum authorities are focusing on Plug and Abandonment (P&A) plans. Therefore efforts are being made, by relevant authorities, to improve standards and procedures for the P&A operations. Regulations for UK part of the North Sea define the P&A operation plans and execution phases in a way that may help improve the standards on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Halliburton like its competitors is focusing on the development of tool that would allow safe and efficient P&A operations. For using it efficiently with coiled tubing, accurate positioning of the tool in both axial and radial directions is important. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) which is based on numerical problem solving technique is used for positioning of the tool down hole at the end of coiled tubing. Ansys 13.0(academic version) and Autodesk Inventor (academic version) have been used to model and analyze the case. With the results presented in the subsequent chapters, an analytical approach for determining the position has also been presented that can form basis for further development.

Although the use of computer vision to analyse images from smartphones is in its infancy, the opportunity to exploit these devices for various assistive applications is beginning to emerge. In this paper, we consider two potential applications of computer vision in the assistive context for blind and partially sighted users. These two applications are intended to help provide answers to the questions of "Where am I?" and "What am I holding?". First, we suggest how to go about providing estimates of the indoor location of a user through queries submitted by a smartphone camera against a database of visual paths — descriptions of the visual appearance of common journeys that might be taken. Our proposal is that such journeys could be harvested from, for example, sighted volunteers. Initial tests using bootstrap statistics do indeed suggest that there is sufficient information within such visual path data to provide indications of: a) along which of several routes a user might be navigating; b) where along a particular path they might be. We will also discuss a pilot benchmarking database and test set for answering the second question of "What am I holding?". We evaluated the role of video sequences, rather than individual images, in such a query context, and suggest how the extra information provided by temporal structure could significantly improve the reliability of search results, an important consideration for assistive applications.
