4. A feasibility study of a thorium fueled molten salt micro modular subcritical reactor using an electron accelerator

Abstract

We present a design for a small subcritical molten salt thorium breeder reactor driven by an electron accelerator. Such a reactor could provide a safe and simple power source fuelled by thorium, without generating long-lived minor actinides. We use both Geant4 and MCNPX simulations to study the production of photons and photoneutrons, the criticality and the breeding in a simple conceptual design. We show that the concept is on the edge of viability.

Abstract

Baryon number conservation is not guaranteed by any fundamental symmetry within the standard model, and therefore has been a subject of experimental and theoretical scrutiny for decades. So far, no evidence for baryon number violation has been observed. Large underground detectors have long been used for both neutrino detection and searches for baryon number violating processes. The next generation of large neutrino detectors will seek to improve upon the limits set by past and current experiments and will cover a range of lifetimes predicted by several Grand Unified Theories. In this White Paper, we summarize theoretical motivations and experimental aspects of searches for baryon number violation in neutrino experiments.

Abstract

A multi-parameter analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of meteorological parameters, night sky brightness and seismic hazard on proposed sites for the new optical/infrared Egyptian astronomical telescope. The ERA5 reanalysis data set is used to get the following meteorological parameters: Total cloud coverage fraction, precipitable water vapor, relative humidity, wind speed & direction and Air temperature. To estimate the aerosol optical depth we used the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2). Light pollution over the candidate sites was measured from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day Night Band (DNB). The seismic input in terms of maximum acceleration and response spectra were computed using a physics-based ground motion approach to assess the seismic hazards and consequently the designation of seismic resistant structure for the proposed sites to be able to assess the seismic hazards for the candidate sites. Of the seven nominated sites, two sites are found to have the best measurements and might be considered future sites for the new Egyptian Astronomical telescope. The first site is located in the south of the Sinai peninsula, while the second one is located in the Red Sea mountains region., Comment: The paper contains 17 pages and 14 figures

9. Exploring the Experience of Using the Madrasati Platform to Deliver Instruction

Abstract

This research explored the impact of the Madrasati platform on the performance and role of high school teachers in Saudi Arabia, with a focus on the Jazan region. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study addressed the key research questions, including the extent of the Madrasati platform contribution to teacher support and its impact on content delivery, communication, evaluation, motivation, autonomy, and knowledge sharing. The research design of this study incorporates both qualitative and quantitative methods. The purpose of using mixed methods was to provide a comprehensive understanding of teacher experiences. The study setting in the Jazan region is characterized by diverse terrain, a growing population, and significant developments in educational infrastructure. The choice of this region allows an in-depth exploration of how the Madrasati Platform aligns with the cultural and educational context. Participants of this study were 333 high school teachers from various disciplines, ensuring a diverse sample for robust statistical analysis. Data collection involved a structured survey with multiple-choice and open-ended questions, addressing demographic information, platform experiences, and suggestions for improvement. The researcher has followed ethical guidelines, secured approvals from the Institutional Review Board and the Ministry, and emphasized participants' confidentiality. The data analysis was done by using statistical software and qualitative methods to derive meaningful insights into the platform impact. This research contributed to the broader understanding of educational technology in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the context of government initiatives to enhance teaching practices. The findings of this study aimed to inform educational policies and improve the Madrasati Platform, ultimately benefiting high school teachers and students in the Jazan region and in other parts of Saudi Arabia. Abstract

Brushed stimuli are perceived as pleasant when stroked lightly on the skin surface of a touch receiver at certain velocities. While the relationship between brush velocity and pleasantness has been widely replicated, we do not understand how resultant skin movements - e.g., lateral stretch, stick-slip, normal indentation - drive us to form such judgments. In a series of psychophysical experiments, this work modulates skin movements by varying stimulus stiffness and employing various treatments. The stimuli include brushes of three levels of stiffness and an ungloved human finger. The skin's friction is modulated via non-hazardous chemicals and washing protocols, and the skin's thickness and lateral movement are modulated by thin sheets of adhesive film. The stimuli are hand-brushed at controlled forces and velocities. Human participants report perceived pleasantness per trial using ratio scaling. The results indicate that a brush's stiffness influenced pleasantness more than any skin treatment. Surprisingly, varying the skin's friction did not affect pleasantness. However, the application of a thin elastic film modulated pleasantness. Such barriers, though elastic and only 40 microns thick, inhibit the skin's tangential movement and disperse normal force. The finding that thin films modulate affective interactions has implications for wearable sensors and actuation devices.

Abstract

In the present article, we present a spectroscopic analysis of 83 field B-type stars from NOAO Indo-U.S. Library. We calculated the fundamental parameters e.g effective temperatures, surface gravities, and rotational velocities using Barbier-Chalonge-Divan (BCD) method and line blanketed LTE/NLTE model atmospheres. The projected rotational velocity was estimated by fitting the Mg II4481 {\AA} line profile with theoretical lines calculated from LTE/NLTE models. The evolutionary masses for the program stars are estimated using the evolutionary models.
