Abstract

The discussion of ethics in design has so far relied on theories and approaches from other disciplines. We argue that design can benefit from an explicit discussion on the ethics of its methods and practices that arises from within the discipline. This Conversation aimed at stimulating this discussion. Around 25 people attended in person, in addition to the online participants. We asked our audience about the main approaches they use for ethical inquiry and discussed the opportunities and challenges of applying these. We found out that ethics may best be framed as an invitation to care, without reducing it to a checklist, toolkit or an afterthought that can be added onto the design process. Although the situated nature of ethical issues calls for a plurality of approaches, we foresee boundaries to pluralism that acknowledge historical legacies of violence. Hence, we see a role for design to willingly engage with problematizing (vs. problem-solving) when addressing societal issues, with a view towards structural injustices.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of current practices and approaches to co-designing services with and for people living with early to mid-stage dementia to derive a set of principles and practices for application in the IDoService project. It explores the understanding of service design and of co-design for the purposes of this paper, and then uses a meta-review of co-design of services for people with dementia, underpinned by a selection of case studies from the literature to extract and collate a set of key principles of best practice. We then consider the application of these principles and practices for the development of the IDoService to discuss implications and benefits of this approach for designing services.

Abstract

Transdisciplinary research is claimed to be essential in tackling today’s complex societal challenges. Transdisciplinarity includes collaboration and integration across academic disciplines, non-academic ways of knowing, and the ‘real world’ of citizens, professionals and other stakeholders. Design can contribute to transdisciplinarity by framing complex challenges, integrating knowledge towards synthesizing solutions, and providing participatory practices to engage with the real world. However, for design to be successful in transdisciplinary research contexts, a better understanding of transdisciplinarity and design is required. In this paper I present a conceptual and practical perspective on transdisciplinary de-sign. I show how design relates to three different conceptions of transdisciplinarity: a multi-level disciplinary practice, a participatory practice, and a practice focused on complexity and social learning. Furthermore, I propose a set of trans-disciplinary competences that enhance designers’ ability to contribute to tack-ling complex societal challenges, including epistemic intelligence, worldview awareness, power literacy and reflexive and dialogic skills

16. Enhancing consumers’ willingness to repair electronic products: How design can nudge sustainable behaviour

Abstract

Product repair can decrease the ecological burden of consumer electronicsby lengthening their lifetimes, but it is still too rarely practised by consumers. Design for behaviour change can motivate consumers to undertake repair activities. An increased level of repair self-efficacy can nudge consumers towards repair. In two experiments, we tested the effects of a fault indication on consumers’ willingness to repair washing machines, vacuum cleaners and stick vacuum cleaners. A fault indication is a signal appearing on a product providing information about the occurring failure. For products that are relatively less likely to be repaired by a repair professional, the willingness to repair increased significantly when a fault indication was present. The perceived level of self-efficacy mediated these results. These results remained consistent among different types of product failures. Finally, we provide implications for designers and future opportunities on how to further stimulate consumers’ willingness to repair electronic products

Abstract

What for and how will we design children's technologies in the transhumanism age, and what stance will we take as designers? This paper aims to answer this question with 13 fictional abstracts from sixteen authors of different countries, institutions and disciplines. Transhumanist thinking envisions enhancing human body and mind by blending human biology with technological augmentations. Fundamentally, it seeks to improve the human species, yet the impacts of such movement are unknown and the implications on children's lives and technologies were not explored deeply. In an age, where technologies such as under-skin chips or brain-machine interfaces can clearly be defined as transhumanist, our aim is to reveal probable pitfalls and benefits of those technologies on children's lives by using the power of design fiction. Thus, main contribution of this paper is to create diverse presentation of provocative research ideas that will foster the discussion on the transhumanist technologies impacting the lives of children in the future.

The previous article discussed the use of statistical models to predict the results of the television show Strictly Come Dancing. The authors of this reply applied their model to the current series of the show and found that it is performing well so far. They caution readers about relying too heavily on demographic data and suggest including markers of dancing ability in prognostic models. Abstract

Even though inclusion is a well-researched subject in design, the numerous ways to describe and understand it are unsettled. The theoretical landscape often leads into paradoxes about how to best practice inclusion in design development processes. Instead, this study probes present-day understandings of designing inclusively from the perspective of practitioners who adopt an inclusive approach. A review of existing literature helped formulate preliminary notions that guide discussions with practitioners recruited across different domains. Iterative analysis of the data from these interviews reveals some differences between the original theoretical constructs and how they are perceived and used in practice. This paper outlines the notions reformed through practitioners’ lived experiences: They are Proof of Logic, Governing Ways of Thinking, User Accessibility, Project Constraints, User Involvement, Design Stages, and Outcomes and Impact. The research can help untangle the issues that matter to practitioners which can ultimately help inform future practice.

Abstract

The studio remains central to design education as a shared place, practice and even concept. And yet studio persists as an ill-defined entity: a complex puzzle composed of thousands of diverse jigsaw parts constructed by teachers and students, with no definitive list of parts. Given this background, it was opportune to review the landscape of studio, both in terms of research and practice. In 2020, this study brought together an invited collective of design educators from the USA, Australia, UK, Swe- den, Spain, Iran, and Germany, experienced in the research and operation of design studios in education to explore these issues. Expert elicitation, conducted over several months illuminated the critical values, questions, and themes of studio to foreground and inform future research studies in this field. The authors approached this study through the lens of thematic analysis and collaborative autoethnography. Later, they determined their own subjective narratives as they reflected on the themes relevant to their individual studio research interests. These narratives briefly examined studio through the lens of sensory affect and the inclusiveness of the design studio. The emer- gent themes from this study have implications for both studio research and practice: identifying a plurality of the boundaries of studio today.

38. Out of isolation: designing reusable PPE gowns based on an understanding of healthcare workers’ lived experiences

Abstract

The paper reports on an AHRC-funded project aimed at mitigating the personal and environmental impact of PPE isolation gowns, as worn by healthcare workers treating patients with COVID-19. The enquiry was devised in collaboration with NHS and industry partners and is informed by empirical investigations into procured gowns and the lived experiences the health professionals' wearing them. The development of an industry standard 'reusable gown system' requires negotiating various proximities: between safety and disease transmission; sustainability and medical waste; the needs of end users, regulation and cost; public and private stakeholders. The article contextualizes the research problem and methodology, incorporating survey, code sign and material methods employed to gain a better understanding of the issues associated with current gown design, fabrication and use. The study raises questions around how critical clothing items are produced, procured and disposed of, and the need for circular design and supply chain models.

Abstract

Electrical and electronic equipment is the fastest growing waste stream globally, and large appliances such as washing machines significantly contribute to this environmental problem. Therefore, we look into maintenance as a practice to improve the lifecycle and circularity of washing machines. To inquire into maintenance practices, we undertook the development of a series of prototypes with a constructive design research approach. The design of the prototypes incorporated nudge and persuasive technologies as part of the inquiry. We present this inquiry for understanding the gap between an everyday engagement with the washing machine and the necessary maintenance practices for prolonging the use and durability of these appliances. The final prototype, OptiWash, is presented not only as an object that characterizes this gap but also as a device for facilitating the everyday maintenance of washing machines and thus, prolonging the equipment lifespan and minimizing waste of electrical and electronic equipment.

46. Soundscape in Times of Change: Case Study of a City Neighbourhood During the COVID-19 Lockdown.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown meant a greatly reduced social and economic activity. Sound is of major importance to people's perception of the environment, and some remarked that the soundscape was changing for the better. But are these anecdotal reports based in truth? Has traffic noise from cars and airplanes really gone down, so that more birdsong can be heard? Have socially distanced people quietened down? This article presents a case study of the human perception of environmental sounds in an urban neighborhood in the Basque Country between 15 March and 25 May 2020. The social restrictions imposed through national legislation divided the 69-day period into three phases. We collected observations, field audio recordings, photography, and diary notes on 50 days. Experts in soundscape and architecture were presented with the recordings, in randomized order, and made two separate perceptual analyses. One group ( N = 11) rated the recordings for pleasantness and eventfulness using an adapted version of the Swedish Soundscape Quality Protocol, and a partly overlapping group ( N = 12) annotated perceived sound events with free-form semantic labels. The labels were systematically classified into a four-level Taxonomy of Sound Sources, allowing an estimation of the relative amounts of Natural, Human, and Technological sounds. Loudness and three descriptors developed for bioacoustics were extracted computationally. Analysis showed that Eventfulness, Acoustic Complexity, and Acoustic Richness increased significantly over the time period, while the amount of Technological sounds decreased. These observations were interpreted as reflecting changes in people's outdoor activities and behavior over the whole 69-day period, evidenced in an increased presence of Human sounds of voices and walking, and a significant shift from motorized vehicles toward personal mobility devices, again evidenced by perceived sounds. Quantitative results provided a backdrop against which qualitative analyses of diary notes and observations were interpreted in relation to the restrictions and the architectural specifics of the site. An integrated analysis of all sources pointed at the temporary suspension of human outdoor activity as the main reason for such a change. In the third phase, the progressive return of street life and the usage of personal mobility vehicles seemed to be responsible for a clear increase in Eventfulness and Loudness even in the context of an overall decrease of Technological sounds. Indoor human activity shared through open windows and an increased presence of birdsong emerge as a novel characteristic element of the local urban soundscape. Abstract

Aortic stenosis is one of the most common heart valve diseases, as well as one of the most common causes of heart failure in the elderly. Currently, there are no medical therapies to prevent or slow the progression of the disease. When symptoms develop alongside severe aortic stenosis, there is a poor prognosis unless aortic valve replacement is performed. Aortic stenosis is a heterogeneous disease with a complex pathophysiology involving structural and biological changes of the valve, as well as adaptive and maladaptive compensatory changes in the myocardium and vasculature in response to chronic pressure overload. Galectin-3 serves important functions in numerous biological activities including cell growth, apoptosis, differentiation, inflammation and fibrosis. With evidence emerging to support the function of Galectin-3, the current review aims to summarize the latest literature regarding the potential of Galectin-3 as therapeutic target in aortic valve and cardiovascular alterations associated with aortic stenosis.

Abstract

Vascularization of a segment or lobe of the lung from a systemic artery is a rare anomaly. The lower left lobe is usually involved and clinical presentation typically includes hemoptysis, chest pain, exercise-related dyspnea or murmurs. Some patients are asymptomatic and discovery is fortuitous. Diagnosis depends on images, with angiography and, most recently, helicoid CT scan proving most useful. Treatment is nearly always surgical, with or without prior embolization of the anomalous vessel.We report the case of a 31-year-old man with anomalous systemic arterial supply to the lower right lobe discovered while we examined a pulmonary node that appeared benign. The location was unusual. We discuss diagnostic procedures and assess the relation between this condition and lung sequestration and hypogenetic lung syndrome.

Abstract

A patient with chronic alcoholism displayed significant ascites and a splenic pseudocyst, after relapsing chronic pancreatitis. The pathogenic possibilities are commented. The break of pancreatic ducts, with extravasation of enzymes, that would reach adjacent structures, is a common mechanism to both complications. The authors suggest aspirative puncture for the definitive diagnosis, following splenectomy and distal pancreatectomy as the safest treatment.
