Abstract

Background: Epidemiological evidence suggests a cardioprotective role of α‐linolenic acid (ALA), a plant‐derived ω‐3 fatty acid. It is unclear whether ALA is beneficial in a background of high marine ω‐3 fatty acids (long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids) intake. In persons at high cardiovascular risk from Spain, a country in which fish consumption is customarily high, we investigated whether meeting the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids recommendation for dietary ALA (0.7% of total energy) at baseline was related to all‐cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. We also examined the effect of meeting the society's recommendation for long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (≥500 mg/day). Methods and Results: We longitudinally evaluated 7202 participants in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) trial. Multivariable‐adjusted Cox regression models were fitted to estimate hazard ratios. ALA intake correlated to walnut consumption (r=0.94). During a 5.9‐y follow‐up, 431 deaths occurred (104 cardiovascular disease, 55 coronary heart disease, 32 sudden cardiac death, 25 stroke). The hazard ratios for meeting ALA recommendation (n=1615, 22.4%) were 0.72 (95% CI 0.56–0.92) for all‐cause mortality and 0.95 (95% CI 0.58–1.57) for fatal cardiovascular disease. The hazard ratios for meeting the recommendation for long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n=5452, 75.7%) were 0.84 (95% CI 0.67–1.05) for all‐cause mortality, 0.61 (95% CI 0.39–0.96) for fatal cardiovascular disease, 0.54 (95% CI 0.29–0.99) for fatal coronary heart disease, and 0.49 (95% CI 0.22–1.01) for sudden cardiac death. The highest reduction in all‐cause mortality occurred in participants meeting both recommendations (hazard ratio 0.63 [95% CI 0.45–0.87]). Conclusions: In participants without prior cardiovascular disease and high fish consumption, dietary ALA, supplied mainly by walnuts and olive oil, relates inversely to all‐cause mortality, whereas protection from cardiac mortality is limited to fish‐derived long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Abstract

A la luz del origen común y similar evolución que presentan las casas de recogidas y arrepentidas se pretende ofrecer la visión de aquellas mujeres que procedentes de los sectores más pobres y marginales de la sociedad se vieron forzadas por sus propias circunstancias o por sentencia judicial a la reclusión y clausura decretada por el Concilio de Trento. Sujetas a un proceso de reelaboración de la propia identidad, de disciplina del cuerpo y de remodelación del alma, muchas de ellas mostraron su rebeldía y disconformidad. Las aportaciones documentales procedentes de instituciones españolas, francesas e italianas constituyen la base para analizar los aspectos emocionales, afectivos y espirituales de estas mujeres, así como sus posibilidades de reintegración social o profesión religiosa.

Abstract

Renovarse o morir. Renovarse y crecer. Estamos muy orgullosos de poder decir alto y claro que la revista Panta Rei vuelve a entrar en movimiento. Y aunque lo hace con una filosofía en lo esencial exactamente igual a sus inicios, cuando fue concebida hacia el año 1993 entre los muros de las aulas de la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad de Murcia, ahora reaparece completamente renovada. En el prólogo del primer volumen de la revista se anhelaba que esta fuera como un río de preguntas y estímulos, empleando esta figura metafórica como imagen del devenir y del cambio. No obstante, el río en el que nos sumergimos ahora es distinto, más amplio y ambicioso, abierto a millones de personas que son capaces de acceder al conocimiento con un simple movimiento de ratón. Como decía Heráclito “todo se mueve y nada permanece” y, comparando los seres con la corriente de un río, añade: “no podrías sumergirte dos veces en el mismo río” (Platón, Crátilo 402a).

22. Toward Fully Multiferroic van der Waals SpinFETs: Basic Design and Quantum Calculations.

Abstract

Manipulating spin transport enhances the functionality of electronic devices, allowing them to surpass physical constraints related to speed and power. For this reason, the use of van der Waals multiferroics at the interface of heterostructures offers promising prospects for developing high-performance devices, enabling the electrical control of spin information. Our work focuses primarily on a mechanism for multiferroicity in two-dimensional van der Waals materials that stems from an interplay between antiferromagnetism and the breaking of inversion symmetry in certain bilayers. We provide evidence for spin-electrical couplings that include manipulating van der Waals multiferroic edges via external voltages and the subsequent control of spin transport including for fully multiferroic spin field-effect transistors.

Abstract

During a research of digeneans (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) infecting leaf-nosed bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) from the Kawsay Biological Station in Madre de Dios, southeastern Peru, four new species were described based on light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM): Anenterotrema paramegacetabulum n. sp. from the seba's short-tailed bat Carollia perspicillata Linnaeus, A. hastati n. sp., A. kawsayense n. sp., and A. peruense n. sp. from the greater spear-nosed bat Phyllostomus hastatus (Pallas). Anenterotrema paramegacetabulum n. sp. differs from all congeners by having a terminal oral sucker, a transversely elongated ventral sucker without clamp-shaped, and by having the testes located immediately posterior to ventral sucker. Anenterotrema hastati n. sp. is easily differentiated from the other congeneric species by having an almost clamp-shaped oral sucker, well-developed cirrus sac, a bilobulated seminal receptacle, and a group of well-developed unicellular glands located anterolateral to cirrus sac. Anenterotrema kawsayense n. sp. is characterized by possessing protuberances on the anterior margin of the oral sucker. Anenterotrema peruense n. sp. is mainly characterized by having the testes located principally anterior to ventral sucker and the cirrus sac located perpendicular to midline of the body. The present finding brings to 12, the number of known species of Anenterotrema. A key to the species of Anenterotrema Stunkard, 1938 is provided., (© 2023. Abstract

Long-term exposure to high doses of caffeine affects several aspects of nitrogen metabolism, such as purine, pyrimidine and urea synthesis. However, little is known about the mechanisms of these changes and if they occur at shorter term. We have studied in isolated hepatocytes: 1) the in vitro effect of high doses of caffeine on amino acid levels, 2) the main destination of ammonia and carbon chains from amino acid catabolism, and 3) the cytosolic and mitochondrial redox states. We have found that, whereas it has a small effect on urea synthesis and on the levels of the cofactors and intermediates, it decreases the levels of several amino acids, the gluconeogenesis and the redox state. Our results suggest that a longer exposure to caffeine is necessary to affect the normal functions of some metabolic pathways.
